Deep Tech Cities in Europe (2027): 20 Best Cities for Deep Tech Startups and the Programmes Behind Them

The Best European Cities for Deep Tech Startups and the Programmes Behind Them

Deep tech startups (quantum, chips, biotech, robotics, new materials, climate hardware) need more than a coworking desk: they need labs, cleanrooms, research partners, patient investors and people who have built hard-tech companies before. In Europe those things cluster around a small number of universities and research centres. This guide covers 20 cities where that support is real, and for each one names the programmes and institutions a founder can actually contact. We checked every programme on its own website in October 2026 and removed the ecosystem valuations, unicorn counts and funding totals that older rankings repeat without a source. Comparing whole countries rather than cities? See our guide to deep tech countries in Europe and their national programmes.
Quick answer: for the widest deep tech support in one place, look at Munich (UnternehmerTUM, TUM Venture Labs), Amsterdam (Amsterdam Science Park), Oxford and Cambridge. For chips and hardware choose Leuven (imec), Eindhoven, Dresden or Grenoble; for quantum Delft (QuTech), Bristol or Copenhagen; for biotech Heidelberg, Copenhagen or Cambridge. Wherever you are in the EU, the EIC Accelerator is the main European grant and equity programme for deep tech.

Cities From Older Rankings and What Changed

The 2025 version of this article ranked cities by ecosystem value, unicorn counts, startup counts and venture capital totals that it did not source, and linked to news sites instead of the programmes themselves. We removed all of those figures. Dublin, Lisbon, Oslo, Geneva, Tallinn, Antwerp, Gothenburg, Warsaw and Brussels are good startup cities, but we kept this list to places where we could verify a clear deep tech base on official sites. Gothenburg comes close: Chalmers Ventures describes itself as a leading deep tech investor and venture builder in the Nordics. We also dropped Bristol's Unit DX from our sources because its domain now redirects to an unrelated site.

Which Deep Tech City Should You Choose?
