Startup Playbook: success through failure

AI Tools for Small Business: 13 Picks to Launch a One-Person Company, in the Order You Need Them

TL;DR: Which AI tools does a small business need at launch?

AI tools for small business launches come down to six jobs done in order: shape the idea, check the market, build the website, make the brand look real, win the first customers and keep the admin under control. A one-person company can do all six on free plans: Elona and the free Fe/male Switch generators for the idea, ChatGPT and Perplexity for planning and research, Lovable or Framer for the site, Canva, Gamma and Descript for visuals, Tally and Fathom for customers and Notion for admin. Paying €47.50 a month (Elona's Intern tier, ChatGPT Go, Canva Pro and Lovable Pro) removes the limits that slow a solo founder down first. Every price below was checked on the vendor's own page on 24 October 2026.

πŸ‘‰ Never tested an idea before? Read the 30-day validation plan for first-time founders first.
Eurostat found that only 17% of small EU companies (10 to 49 people) used any AI technology in 2025, against 55% of large ones. Among companies that considered AI and still said no, the top reason was a lack of relevant know-how, named by 70.89% of them. A solo founder has the opposite problem: hundreds of AI apps, a tiny budget and no time to test them all.
This guide answers the search for the best AI tools for small business with a short list in launch order. Each tool gets its launch job, free plan, first paid plan and one beginner tip, starting with our own free tools and then 11 external products picked for one-person launches. Prices are what each vendor's page showed a visitor in the Netherlands on 24 October 2026; VAT and local pricing can change them at checkout.

Which AI tools does a small business need at launch?

A one-person business needs AI for six jobs, and the order matters. A polished logo before anyone wants the product is money and time spent on the wrong stage.
  1. Idea and plan: turn a vague wish into one clear offer and a simple plan.
  2. Market research: find out who buys, what they pay today and who else sells it.
  3. Website: one page that explains the offer and collects emails or orders.
  4. Brand and visuals: a name, a logo, social posts, a one-page deck and short videos.
  5. First customers and sales: calls, follow-ups and a way to take money.
  6. Admin and money: one place for notes, tasks, payments and decisions.

Which free AI tools help you shape the idea and the plan?

Stage one can cost nothing, and two of the three tools below are ours.

1. Elona, the AI co-founder from Fe/male Switch

Elona is the AI co-founder built into Fe/male Switch, a startup game for first-time founders. On her page you type what you are building, and in about ten seconds she gives you an honest first take plus a plan for your next 7 days. There is no sign-up, and the page says it never asks for your name or email.
Launch job: idea check and weekly plan. In the game she drafts canvases, a business plan, a pitch deck outline and checklists, and reviews your work quest by quest in the Skill Lab.
Price: the try-it box and her free tools cost nothing. In the game, the Intern tier costs €2.50 a month and adds Elona's feedback in the Skill Lab; the Play tier costs €10 a month with a 14-day free trial and adds Game Masters, any role in the game and prizes (early-bird prices, VAT included).
Beginner tip: give Elona your customer, your price and your sales channel in one paragraph. A specific brief gets you a 7-day plan you can start tomorrow morning.

2. The free Fe/male Switch generators

Next to Elona sit single-job generators. Each one asks for a short description and returns its result in about 10 seconds, according to its own page:
Launch job: first drafts for the idea, research and marketing stages. Price: free. Beginner tip: run the Idea Validator on two or three ideas and compare the customer profiles side by side. The idea with the clearest buyer wins, even when it sounds dull. Then turn the winner into a real document with our startup business plan template.

3. ChatGPT

ChatGPT from OpenAI is the general assistant most founders open first: brainstorming, rewriting, emails, pricing scenarios and a first FAQ for your website. Treat it like a fast junior colleague who writes well and checks nothing.
Price: the Free plan gives unlimited text chats (within OpenAI's abuse guardrails), with limited uploads, image creation and deep research. Go costs €8 a month and raises those limits; OpenAI says the plan may include ads. Plus costs €23 a month and adds advanced reasoning, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs.
Launch job: planning and writing. Beginner tip: the pricing page states that chats on Free, Go and Plus can be used to train OpenAI's models, with an opt-out available. Switch training off in the settings before you paste customer data or your numbers.

Which AI tools do market research for a small business?

Research decides what you build, so give it real hours. Our guide to market research techniques for women-led startups covers interviews and desk research; these two tools speed up both.

4. Perplexity

Perplexity is an AI answer engine: you ask a question and every answer comes with inline citations, so you can click through to the source. That makes it a better fit than a plain chatbot for competitor lists, price checks and questions like "who already sells this in my city?"
Price: a free plan exists. Pro costs $17 a month when billed annually and adds deep research, a choice of AI models and higher usage limits.
Launch job: desk research. Beginner tip: ask for "the 10 companies selling X to Y in [your country], with their prices", then open every source. A citation that leads to an old blog post is a lead to check before you trust it.

5. Tally

Tally is a form builder whose free plan allows unlimited forms and submissions within its fair use rules. Its built-in AI assistant builds, edits and fixes forms from a text prompt, and Tally says the assistant is free on every plan.
Price: the free plan includes payments, file uploads, signatures, conditional logic and connections to Notion, Google Sheets, Make and Zapier. Pro costs €20 a month and removes Tally branding, adds custom domains and saves partial answers.
Launch job: customer surveys, a waitlist and pre-orders. Beginner tip: ask the AI assistant for a 6-question survey about how people solve the problem today and what they pay for it. Send it to 30 people before you build anything, and use our guide to finding your first 10 customers to pick who gets it.

What is the best AI website builder for a one-person business?

Pick one of these two. Lovable fits when the site needs logic, such as logins, bookings or a small app; Framer fits when you want a polished marketing site. Our step-by-step guide to building a startup website without coding covers what both tools leave to you: copy, structure and a domain.

6. Lovable

Lovable builds web apps and websites from a chat: you describe the page or feature, it writes the code and shows the result. Its pricing FAQ gives sample costs, such as 1.70 credits for "Build me a landing page, use images", which creates a page with 3 generated images and 5 sections.
Price: the Free plan costs €0 with no credit card and gives 5 build credits a day (up to 30 a month) and five lovable.app addresses. Pro costs €25 a month for 100 monthly credits, custom domains and no Lovable badge.
Launch job: website or first web app. Beginner tip: put the whole brief (audience, offer, three sections, one call to action) into your first prompt. Every small "fix this" message spends credits, so one clear brief stretches the free plan further.

7. Framer

Framer is a visual website builder used by designers and founders. Its AI features run on credits, and the free plan includes 500 AI credits to try them.
Price: Free costs €0 with a Framer subdomain and 1 GB of monthly traffic. The entry paid plan costs €10 a month on yearly billing and adds a free custom domain, 1,000 AI credits a month and room for 30 pages. Pro costs €30 a month.
Launch job: marketing website. Beginner tip: start from a template close to your business and change the words before you touch the design. Visitors decide on the headline and the offer, and our €100 landing page validation plan shows how to test that headline with real traffic.

Which AI tools make a small brand look professional?

Once the offer holds up, make it look trustworthy. Three tools cover the visual side of a solo launch.

8. Canva

Canva is a design app with templates for logos, social posts, flyers, menus and presentations, plus AI features for images and text.
Price: Canva Free gives you 1.6+ million templates and 4.7+ million stock items. Pro costs €12 a month or €110 a year for one person, with 3.6+ million templates, 141+ million stock items, more design tools and more AI, and it comes with a free trial.
Launch job: logo, social posts and print. Beginner tip: set two brand colours and one font on day one and reuse them everywhere. A consistent look makes a one-person business look bigger than any single clever post.

9. Gamma

Gamma turns a prompt or a document into a presentation, a one-page website, a doc or social images. For a solo founder it is the fastest way to a sales deck or a one-pager you can send after a call.
Price: Free gives 400 credits at signup and up to 10 slides per prompt, with export to PDF, PowerPoint and Google Slides. Plus costs €10 a month (or €8 a month billed yearly) for 1,000 monthly credits, up to 100 slides per prompt and no Gamma branding.
Launch job: sales deck and one-pager. Beginner tip: paste your Idea Validator result into Gamma and ask for a 6-slide deck: problem, customer, offer, price, proof, next step. Then cut every slide down to one sentence.

10. Descript

Descript edits video through the transcript: delete a sentence in the text and it disappears from the video. Its AI tools include Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words and Create Clips.
Price: there is a free plan, and you need no credit card to try it. Hobbyist costs $16 a month on annual billing ($24 month to month) for 10 media hours and 400 AI credits a month, 1080p export without a watermark and Underlord, its AI co-editor.
Launch job: short videos for social media. Beginner tip: record one 10-minute talk about the problem you solve, then let Create Clips cut it into short videos. One recording can feed a month of posts.

Which AI tools help you win your first customers?

First customers come from conversations, and from a price you can say out loud without blushing. Settle that number first with our guide to pricing your first product, then use these two tools for the calls and the checkout.

11. Fathom

Fathom is an AI notetaker for video calls. It records and transcribes the call and writes a summary right after, so you can listen during sales and discovery calls instead of typing.
Price: the free plan is free forever, with unlimited recordings and transcriptions, instant AI call summaries, clips and search across your calls. Premium costs $16 a month billed annually ($20 billed monthly) and adds advanced summaries, AI action items and a chat assistant that answers questions about your calls.
Launch job: discovery and sales calls. Beginner tip: tell people you record and why before you start. Then reread three summaries in a row: the words customers repeat are your next headline.

12. Shopify

Shopify is the online shop platform for founders who sell products. Every plan includes Sidekick, Shopify's built-in AI assistant, and the pricing page says you can set up a store from a simple prompt or a ready-made template.
Price: there is no free plan. You get 3 days free, then €1 a month for 3 months. After that the entry plan for solo entrepreneurs costs €28 a month, or €21 a month paid yearly, with fraud protection, GDPR tools and automatic VAT collection included.
Launch job: online sales of products. Beginner tip: spend the €1 months selling to real people; the theme can wait. If you sell a service, take payment through a Tally form until order numbers justify a full shop.

Which AI tools handle admin and money?

Admin is where solo founders lose their evenings. Pick your legal form first (our comparison of sole proprietorship, LLC and corporation helps), then keep everything in one workspace. For money, the stack above already covers the basics: Tally's free plan collects payments, and Shopify collects VAT automatically if you sell products.

13. Notion

Notion is a workspace for notes, task lists, simple databases, forms and web pages. A solo founder can run the whole company from it: a customer list, an idea backlog, a content calendar and a weekly review page.
Price: Free costs €0 and includes a trial of Notion AI. Plus costs €9.50 a month billed yearly (€11.50 monthly) and still includes only the AI trial. Notion Agent and AI Meeting Notes start on Business, at €19.50 per seat a month billed yearly.
Launch job: admin home base. Beginner tip: stay on Free until you miss the AI trial. For AI help with a Notion page, paste it into ChatGPT instead of paying for a second AI subscription in month one.

How much does an AI tool stack cost: €0 or about €50 a month?

Here is the same launch done twice. The first stack costs nothing; the second pays for the four upgrades that remove the limits a busy solo founder hits first.

Our calculation from the prices above, checked 24 October 2026 (Canva Pro at its monthly price). Swap Lovable Pro for Framer's €10 entry plan on yearly billing and the paid stack drops to €32.50 a month. Selling products? Add Shopify: €1 a month for 3 months, then €28 a month.
Upgrade a tool when its limit costs you a sale or a week of work. Until then, the free plans carry a first launch.
Want one AI co-founder instead of 12 browser tabs?

Elona tests your idea, plans your week and drafts your canvases, and inside the Fe/male Switch startup game she reviews your work quest by quest. Try her free with no sign-up and get a 7-day plan in about ten seconds.

What does the first 30 days with AI look like?

Here is a 30-day plan that uses the tools in launch order. Let's break it down:
  1. Day 1 to 2: describe your idea to Elona and get a 7-day plan. Run two or three ideas through the Idea Validator and keep the one with the clearest buyer.
  2. Day 3 to 5: ask Perplexity for 10 competitors with prices, and get a market size and a persona from the free generators.
  3. Day 6 to 9: build a 6-question survey in Tally with its AI assistant and send it to 30 people. Hold five video calls and record them with Fathom.
  4. Day 10 to 12: write your offer, price and FAQ with ChatGPT, using the exact words customers said on the calls.
  5. Day 13 to 16: build one landing page in Lovable or Framer with a Tally waitlist or pre-order form on it.
  6. Day 17 to 20: make your logo, colours and five social posts in Canva, and a 6-slide one-pager in Gamma.
  7. Day 21 to 25: record one talk about the problem, cut it into clips with Descript and post one clip a day.
  8. Day 26 to 30: count sign-ups and pre-orders in Notion and decide: keep going, change the offer or test the next idea. Want weekly structure and feedback for this month? The Fe/male Switch startup game turns these steps into quests.

What mistakes do first-time founders make with AI tools?

Eurostat's 2025 survey lists why companies that considered AI still skipped it: a lack of know-how (70.89%), unclear legal consequences (52.52%) and data protection worries (48.83%). Solo founders make the reverse mistakes: they adopt fast and check too little.
  • Buying tools before customers. Five subscriptions on day one cost money before the first sale. Start on the €0 stack and upgrade one tool at a time.
  • Trusting numbers a chatbot invented. Ask Perplexity for the source, open it and keep only numbers you can trace to a named report.
  • Private data in a chat that trains models. Check ChatGPT's training setting and each tool's privacy page before you upload customer lists or contracts.
  • Letting a generator pick the idea. Generators give you options; customers pick, through interviews, a survey or a pre-order.
  • Unedited AI copy on the website. Readers spot generic text in one line, so rewrite every headline in your customers' words from your Fathom summaries.
  • An app where a page would do. Every Lovable change spends credits. Test the offer on one page first.
  • Thirteen tabs and no home base. Keep one workspace and one assistant, and add a tool only for a job you do every week.

Where should you start this week?

AI tools for small business pay off when each one has a job and a deadline. Start with the free stack in launch order: Elona and the generators for the idea, Perplexity and Tally for proof, one website builder, Canva for the look and Fathom for the calls. Upgrade only the tool whose limit blocks a sale.
Keep the Eurostat numbers in mind too. In 2025, 83% of small EU companies used no AI at all (our calculation from Eurostat's 17%), and the main reason they gave was missing know-how. Learn these tools in month one and you start ahead of most small businesses you will compete with.
