TL;DR: How should a small business start with Claude Duet?
Claude Duet is Anthropic's new proactive agent app, launched as a research preview on 21 October 2026 for US Pro and Max subscribers through a waitlist. Start with Gmail and Google Calendar, then add QuickBooks or Stripe for unpaid invoices. Duet asks your approval before it sends, pays, signs or deletes, and it never trades securities or moves money between accounts. Its background checks draw on your normal plan limits, so add one job at a time. Outside the US, set up your connectors in Claude now: Duet carries them over.
Developing story. Last updated 22 Oct 2026, 07:25 CEST. We'll update this article as Anthropic publishes more, including the safety details it has promised "in the coming days".
For the basics, read what Anthropic launched on 21 October on MeanCEO. This guide is for small business owners and solo founders who run sales, invoices and email on their own: which apps to connect first, what Duet always asks you about, how to protect your plan limits and what to hand over in week one.
What does Claude Duet do for a small business?
Anthropic built Duet, a separate app on iOS, Android and the web, for professionals and small business owners. It checks your connected accounts every few hours, writes a morning brief, follows up on quiet threads and works in a cloud computer with its own browser while your laptop is closed. Amin Ebrahimi of Shahs of Kabob, a customer quoted by Anthropic, put it simply: "I don't need to open up 100 tabs." Our 2026 AI productivity stack for female entrepreneurs shows where an agent like this fits.
Can you use Claude Duet in Europe yet?
No. During the research preview, Duet is US-only. According to Anthropic's help center, you need a Pro or Max plan, a Claude account in the US and an invitation from the waitlist. Invites go out in waves with no guaranteed date, and features can change during the preview. Team and Enterprise plans are planned for later.
Your waitlist email should match your Claude account and the Apple or Google account on your phone. European founders weighing availability and GDPR will find the details in the Fe/male Switch Foundation's guide to Claude Duet for European founders. OpenAI's rival Dots agents also arrived in select markets only, as MeanCEO reports on OpenAI Dots in Europe.
Here is the useful part for non-US readers: Duet carries over your Claude memory, skills and connected apps. Everything you set up in your current Claude plan today is ready on the day Duet reaches you.
Which apps should a small business connect to Claude Duet first?
Anthropic says Duet reaches over 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace, and its help center names Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, QuickBooks, HubSpot, Docusign and Calendly. Slack works with some limits, and Microsoft 365 isn't available yet, so Outlook users wait. Connect in order of money and time: mail and calendar first, then invoices, then your CRM (customer relationship management system). Let's break it down.
Run invoices through one system before you connect it. Our guide to estimates and invoices for service firms helps, and a clean CRM for customer relationships gives Duet a real list of leads to follow up.
What does Claude Duet always ask your approval for?
Before Duet sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows you exactly what it will do and waits. If you can't answer right away, it finishes the rest of the job and brings the approval back later.
Purchases go through Link (by Stripe) or Shop Pay (by Shopify), connected inside Duet, with a one-time card for each purchase. Even with your yes, Duet never does these:
- Trading securities is off the table.
- Moving money between your accounts stays your job.
- Someone else's account stays closed to it, even a partner's.
- Phone calls and texts to other people are outside its reach, and email goes out only with your approval.
What should you hand over in your first week?
Add one job every day or two and check it before adding the next. Anthropic warns that Duet can misread a thread or get the urgency of something wrong, so the first week is for calibration.
- Morning brief. Tell Duet what you want to hear about and when. Check each item against its source for three days. Our tips on email and calendar management show what deserves a place in it.
- Unpaid invoice reminders. Duet finds them in QuickBooks or Stripe and drafts the reminder. You approve every send. Tie it to your early-stage cash flow plan.
- Follow-ups on quiet threads. Proposals, partner intros and leads that stopped replying. Edit the first few drafts until they sound like you.
- A dashboard in the Make tab. The Make tab produces finished files: a research brief, a financial model, a slide deck or a dashboard. Every number cites the email, file or spreadsheet it came from, so check the sources. Our growth metrics dashboard guide lists what to track.
Channels split work by topic and share one memory, so open one for money and one for sales. For the bigger picture of handing operations to agents, read how to scale operations with AI automation agents.
How do background checks eat your Pro or Max limits?
Duet draws on your plan's usage limits, including the five-hour session and weekly limits, at the same rate as chats. Background work such as the morning brief and check-ins counts, bigger tasks use more and you can reach your limits sooner. Anthropic set the checks to every few hours to save plan limits.
Since you can't switch to a lighter model, budget by scope:
- Narrow the brief to money, clients and deadlines.
- Ask for fewer check-ins on quiet days.
- Batch Make tab jobs such as dashboards and forecasts into one request a week.
- Plan around the reset. New users get one full reset of the five-hour and weekly limits when admitted, available until 30 November 2026. Save it for your first big build.
Duet is included in Pro and Max at no extra cost during the preview. Anthropic has published no Duet-specific limit numbers for either plan, so track your usage in week one before you upgrade.
What should you keep away from Claude Duet?
Anthropic built in real protections. Duet never sees your passwords or sign-in tokens: you type passwords into a separate form on your device that goes straight to its browser. A classifier checks its actions, and it refuses to share the strictest data such as credit card numbers and government ID. Anthropic also ran red-teaming, an external penetration test and a public bug bounty.
The help center is also frank about prompt injection, hidden instructions planted in an email or web page to steer an agent: Anthropic says "no defense is perfect". Our advice for a small business:
- Keep your bank login, tax portal and payroll out of Duet during the preview.
- Connect a shared inbox only after a week on your own mailbox.
- Turn off past-chat search in Settings, Memory, "Search and reference chats" if old chats hold client secrets.
- Disconnecting an app stops future access, and Duet keeps what it learned in earlier conversations. Connect with that in mind.
Two more limits matter: you can't watch or take over its browser, and urgent things can arrive between checks, so keep your phone's own alerts on for anything urgent. Our cybersecurity basics for women-led startups and GDPR compliance guide for startups cover the rest.
What don't we know yet about Claude Duet?
- How long Duet keeps your data, and whether it is used for training. Anthropic has published neither.
- When Duet reaches Europe, and when Team and Enterprise plans get it.
- When Microsoft 365 support and 1Password sign-in arrive (1Password is "coming soon").
- The further safety details Anthropic promised in the coming days.
