Trading Allowance Triples to £3,000 From 6 April 2027: What Budget 2026 Means for Your Side Hustle, With Worked Examples and a Checklist

TL;DR: trading allowance £3,000 from 6 April 2027

The UK trading allowance triples from £1,000 to £3,000 on 6 April 2027, after the Autumn Budget on 28 October 2026. Where the allowance covers all your trading and miscellaneous income before expenses, you no longer declare that income or pay tax on it, and the Self Assessment reporting threshold for trading income rises to £3,000 as well. The 2026-27 tax year still uses £1,000, so track every sale by tax year and set up your records before April.
Here is everything the Autumn Budget 2026 changed for small businesses, from business rates to VAT, on the Fe/male Switch Foundation blog. This guide covers one slice of it: the trading allowance, the yearly amount of side income an individual can earn tax-free from selling goods or services, plus the smaller Budget changes that land on people starting a first business next to a job.

What did Budget 2026 change about the trading allowance?

Chancellor John Healey's Budget on Wednesday 28 October 2026 raised the Income Tax trading allowance from £1,000 to £3,000 from 6 April 2027. The Budget 2026 document calls it "tripling the generosity of the Trading Allowance", aimed at entrepreneurs taking the first steps in starting a small business. The detail sits in measure 1.5 of HM Treasury's overview of tax legislation and rates (OOTLAR), and three points matter for a first-time founder:
  • It covers trading and miscellaneous income. The Budget puts it in one line: up to £3,000 of trading and miscellaneous income tax-free each year.
  • The test uses income before expenses. Where the allowance covers all your relevant income before costs, you no longer have to declare it or pay tax on it. Sales of £3,200 with £900 of costs sit above the line, even though the profit is £2,300 (our example).
  • Reporting moves with it. The Self Assessment reporting threshold for trading income also rises to £3,000 on 6 April 2027.
Status check: this is an announcement. HM Treasury will legislate in Finance Bill 2026-27, which Parliament has not passed yet.

How much side income is tax-free under the £3,000 trading allowance?

Here are four of our own examples with round numbers. Each one assumes the side business is the person's only trading and miscellaneous income that year.

Take the candle maker with £2,400 of first-year sales. In 2026-27 that is £1,400 above the £1,000 allowance (£2,400 minus £1,000), so the full relief does not apply. The same £2,400 earned in 2027-28 sits £600 under the new line (£3,000 minus £2,400), and she no longer declares it or pays tax on it.
The freelancer with £4,500 is £1,500 over the new line (£4,500 minus £3,000), so the full relief does not apply in either year. How the allowance and your real costs work once income passes the line is set out in HMRC's trading allowance guidance on GOV.UK. Read it before you file, or pick the right adviser with our guide to which tax professional your startup needs.

Who gains the most from the trading allowance increase?

Anyone whose yearly side income lands between £1,000 and £3,000, a band that is fully covered from April 2027. It matches the test phase of a first business:
  • Idea testers taking pre-orders or running a few paid pilots to prove people will pay.
  • Makers selling candles, prints or handmade home decor on Etsy at weekend markets and online.
  • Side freelancers with a few design, writing or tutoring gigs a year next to a job.
  • Founders with first customers who want room to test pricing for a female-led startup before they commit full-time.
Once sales head past £3,000, our guide to moving from side hustle to full-time founder is the next read.

Does it matter when you launch or start invoicing?

Yes, because the 2026-27 tax year still uses £1,000. The new £3,000 applies from 6 April 2027, the first day of the 2027-28 tax year, and the Budget does not backdate it. The allowance also works per tax year, so each April the count starts again.
That turns the launch date into a fair planning question. A founder who meant to start paid pilots in spring 2027 anyway can start in February and pass £1,000 inside 2026-27, or start after 6 April and have the first year fall under the new allowance. Picking a start date is ordinary business planning.
Moving dates on paper is a different matter. Record every sale in the tax year it belongs to and keep the evidence. If a job or a payment straddles 5 April, check HMRC's guidance or ask an accountant before you decide which year it goes in.

What else changes for the self-employed and side hustlers?

The Budget made smaller changes for sole traders and side businesses too, here in date order. For full-time sole traders, our MeanCEO list of self-employed tax changes adds the new property and savings rates, payments on account and the BADR cut.

Cross-border services. From 1 April 2027 the VAT reverse charge on services from overseas applies only when the UK business receiving them is VAT-registered. If you are not registered, the overseas supplier must charge and account for UK VAT, so budget design tools, hosting and overseas freelancers at the VAT-inclusive price. MeanCEO's guide to UK e-invoicing covers this change and the e-invoicing rules that follow in April 2029.
Marketplaces. From October 2027, online marketplaces collect VAT on sales by UK VAT-registered businesses and other UK businesses with at least £90,000 of annual sales per platform. Personal sales, second-hand goods and business-to-business sales stay outside, and regulations in 2027 will fix the exact threshold and date. Our guide to online marketplace VAT works through who is in scope, with a cash-flow example.
Mileage. Our example: a sole trader who logs 15,000 business miles in 2027-28 with simplified mileage claims 10,000 × 55p = £5,500 plus 5,000 × 35p = £1,750, so £7,250 in total. At the old 25p rate the second part came to £1,250, so the claim grows by £500. HM Treasury puts the extra tax saving at up to £300 a year for 15,000 business miles, counting both rate rises.
Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax. If you are required to join in April 2027, you get no late submission penalty points on your quarterly updates for 2027-28. You still send those updates before you can submit your tax return, so set up digital records early; our list of online bookkeeping services for solopreneurs helps.
Young Entrepreneurs Allowance. The government will "shortly pilot" it in England, giving successful applicants support towards living costs during the first year of their business. Amounts, age limits and how to apply are not yet published. The other public money in the Budget, from guaranteed loans to a new venture debt product, is in our report on the British Business Bank's £5bn Budget boost.

What does Budget 2026 offer women founders?

The Budget document notes that women make up just 21% of the digital workforce. Two voluntary standards from the Women in Tech Taskforce, Tech Forward and Inclusive Investment, target fairer employment in tech and fairer access to investment for female entrepreneurs. The government will also launch a scale-up women's programme to support women founders across the UK, testing ideas such as peer learning, investor networks and practical help with finance and governance. Start dates and application pages for the programme are not yet published.

What should you do before 6 April 2027?

  • Open a separate bank account for the side business.
  • Start a sales log: date, customer, amount and tax year of each sale.
  • Add up your 2026-27 income before expenses and compare it with £1,000.
  • Forecast 2027-28 and mark the month you expect to pass £3,000.
  • Keep receipts for costs even while you stay under the allowance.
  • Log business miles with the date and purpose of each trip.
  • Check whether HMRC requires you to join MTD for Income Tax in April 2027.
  • Budget overseas software and services with UK VAT from 1 April 2027.
  • Track yearly sales against the £90,000 VAT threshold.

What does the trading allowance increase mean for you?

  1. This month: open the separate account and start the sales log, beginning with every sale since 6 April 2026.
  2. Before 5 April 2027: total your 2026-27 income before expenses. If it is above £1,000, read HMRC's trading allowance guidance or book an hour with an accountant.
  3. Set your launch date on purpose: put it in your plan and see which tax year the first sales fall in.
  4. From 6 April 2027: check the £3,000 line every month. When sales head past it, put money aside for tax with the habits from managing cash flow in an early-stage startup.
  5. Price for growth: £3,000 a year is £250 a month (£3,000 ÷ 12). Set prices that let the business grow past that line, since a tax threshold is a poor reason to stay small.
