Startup Competitions in North America (2027): 14 Pitch Competitions for Early-Stage Founders With Prizes, Rules and Deadlines

Startup competitions in North America 2027: 14 pitch competitions for early-stage founders

Startup Competitions in North America for Early-Stage Founders: Prizes, Rules and 2027 Dates

A good startup competition gives an early-stage founder three things at once: money that is often equity-free, a deadline that forces you to sharpen your pitch, and a room full of investors and journalists. A bad one costs an entry fee and a week of work for a certificate. We checked every startup and pitch competition below on its official website in October 2026: the prize, whether the organiser takes equity, who can apply, and the next event date or deadline. When an official page does not yet show 2027 dates, we say so instead of guessing. Competitions that ended, paused or changed their name since the 2025 version of this article are listed in a separate section. If you build quantum, photonics, climate, defence or other science-based technology, our guide to deep tech startup competitions in North America lists the prize challenges made for you.
Quick answer: for the biggest equity-free cash prize, apply to TechCrunch Startup Battlefield ($100,000) when 2027 applications open; for a large investment prize, the Startup World Cup ($1 million) and the RSAC Innovation Sandbox ($5 million SAFE for cybersecurity finalists); for the nearest deadlines, SXSW Pitch (November 2026 for March 2027) and the Rice Business Plan Competition for student teams (29 January 2027); and if you can move to St. Louis, Arch Grants pays $75,000 without taking equity. In Canada, look at Startupfest in Montreal and PITCH at Web Summit Vancouver.

The Best Startup Competitions in North America for 2027

1. Startup World Cup: a $1 million investment prize

The Startup World Cup, run by Pegasus Tech Ventures, is a series of regional pitch competitions on six continents whose winners meet at a Grand Finale in San Francisco. The world champion receives a $1,000,000 investment, which its FAQ says is made either for equity at the terms of your latest round or as a convertible note. There is no application fee and no limit on how much capital you have raised. US regionals in the 2025-2026 season took place in Long Beach, Las Vegas, Houston, Honolulu, Riverside County and Silicon Valley. Next date: the 2026 Grand Finale runs 4-6 November 2026 at the Hilton Union Square in San Francisco. Regional dates for 2027 are not announced yet.

2. TechCrunch Startup Battlefield: $100,000 equity-free

Startup Battlefield is TechCrunch's pitch competition at its Disrupt conference in San Francisco. TechCrunch selects 200 early-stage companies to exhibit, and a smaller group of finalists pitches on stage for a $100,000 equity-free prize, plus investor and media attention. The 2026 champion was Intero Biosystems, and Disrupt 2026 took place on 13-15 October 2026. Applying is free, and TechCrunch says founders who do not get in receive perks for attending Disrupt. Next date: applications for 2026 are closed and TechCrunch says it will announce when 2027 applications open. Dates for 2027 not announced yet.

3. SXSW Pitch: the March showcase in Austin

SXSW Pitch puts 64 startups across 8 sector tracks in front of investor judges during SXSW in Austin. It is now in its 19th year. To apply, your founders must still own part of the company and you must not have raised more than $10 million. The non-refundable entry fee is $225 in the regular window, and startups that are not selected receive an early-bird SXSW registration code. There is no published cash prize; you pitch for exposure, awards and investor meetings. Next date: SXSW Pitch 2027 takes place on 16-17 March 2027. The application timeline says the final deadline is 13 November 2026, but one FAQ answer on the same page says 11 November, so apply by 11 November to be safe.

4. SXSW EDU Launch: for education startups

The SXSW EDU Launch Startup Competition, presented by the Walton Family Foundation, is a separate pitch competition for early-stage education startups. You need a working product, a website and user traction, and you must not have raised more than $8 million. You can present at only one SXSW startup event, so choose between Launch and SXSW Pitch. Finalists get SXSW credentials and pitch on stage; the top startup receives the Launch Award. Next date: final entries close on 1 November 2026 (fee $100), and SXSW EDU runs on 13-16 March 2027 in Austin.

5. RSAC Innovation Sandbox: $5 million for cybersecurity startups

The RSAC Innovation Sandbox contest at the RSAC Conference in San Francisco is the best-known pitch competition for early-stage cybersecurity companies. Since 2025, each of the Top 10 finalists receives a $5 million uncapped SAFE investment from Crosspoint Capital, and finalists must accept it; the winner is named Most Innovative Startup and gets a kiosk in the Early Stage Expo. Read the SAFE terms before you apply, because this is an investment, not a cash prize. Next date: RSAC's contest page says submissions for Innovation Sandbox 2027 open on 1 December, and RSAC 2027 takes place on 5-8 April 2027 at the Moscone Center.

The Health Equity and Women's Health competitions award the passes and the feature, and an AgeTech competition runs alongside them. Next date: the 2026 rounds take place on 16 and 17 November 2026. Dates for 2027 not announced yet.

You compete in one of three stages: Idea, Development, or Traction (up to Series A; companies with Series B or later are not eligible). Each pitch is 2 minutes with up to 3 slides. Local winners receive a small cash prize and a ticket to the Startup Grind conference; global finalists compete for further cash prizes and exhibition packages. Startup Competitions That Ended, Paused or Changed

The 2025 version of this article listed several competitions and events that no longer belong on a 2027 list:
  • 43North (Buffalo, NY): 43North says the 2026 competition was its last; its final five winners received $1 million each on 8 October 2026, and programming continues through 2027 for that final cohort only.
  • Heartland Challenge (Bentonville, AR): the University of Arkansas paused this student competition in 2026 and says it will return in 2027 with a new format; no 2027 dates yet. Its 2025 winner, Intero Biosystems, went on to win Startup Battlefield in 2026.
  • Collision (Toronto): collisionconf.com now redirects to Web Summit Vancouver, whose PITCH competition is listed above.
  • Startup Grind Global Pitch Battle: renamed Pitch Battle Royale (see above).
  • Athene Black & Brown Business Summit Pitch Competition: now the Athene Beyond Boundaries Business Summit in West Des Moines, Iowa, with a pitch competition for business owners; 2027 registration is not open yet.
  • Hult Prize: now called the EF Hult Prize (see above).
  • SBA Growth Accelerator Fund Competition: it funds accelerators and other support organisations, not startups, so founders cannot apply.
  • One Giant Leap: held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, so not a North American competition.
  • AI & Big Data Expo, Cyber Security & Cloud Congress, IoT Tech Expo and Venture Summit West: expos and investor events rather than startup competitions. See our startup events in San Francisco instead.
  • TechCrunch Early Stage: it is not on TechCrunch's 2026 events list; Startup Battlefield is TechCrunch's competition.
  • CES startup pitch: we found no CES-run pitch competition with a published prize. CES 2027 takes place on 6-9 January 2027, with startups exhibiting in Eureka Park; see our Las Vegas startup events.
  • Elevator Pitch Competition, Young Entrepreneur Summit and Startup Day: the old list gave no organiser or link we could verify, so we removed them.

How Founders Use Startup Competitions to Raise Money

A competition is rarely the whole round, but it is a strong way to start one. Use the deadline to finish your deck: our guide to a fundraising pitch deck that tells a story helps, and you can practise the short version with an elevator pitch generator. Then turn the judges and investors in the room into meetings: the angel investor groups in North America, the early-stage VC firms that write pre-seed and seed cheques and, if you build with AI, the VCs for AI startups are your follow-up list. Avoid the classic pre-seed fundraising mistakes, such as pitching investors at the wrong stage.
Most competitions are part of a bigger event, so plan the trip around it with our guides to startup events in New York, Boston and Toronto, and our list of fundraising and investor events. If you want an accelerator rather than a one-day pitch, see our list of startup accelerators. For non-dilutive money beyond prizes, Grant Grants explains prize competitions and innovation challenges, equity-free funding and business grants for women, and how to give a strong grant pitch presentation.
