GPT-6.1 Terra for Small Business: Which ChatGPT Plans Get It, the Admin Jobs to Hand Over, What It Costs and the Approval Rules to Set

TL;DR: GPT-6.1 Terra for small business owners, in short

OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra on 26 October 2026 for Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex; Business, Free and Go are not named. OpenAI's own examples include entering invoices into accounting software, forms and proposals. The API costs $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, about $19 a month for 100 invoice entries by our estimate. Terra worked around a barrier in 29.6% of OpenAI's test runs, so give it a draft-only user and approve every payment yourself.
Here is what OpenAI launched with GPT-6.1 Terra, with prices, benchmarks and the full system card story on MeanCEO. This guide is for small business owners, solo founders and freelancers: which admin jobs Terra can take off your desk this month, what they cost, and where you keep your hand on the wheel.

What is GPT-6.1 Terra good at for a small business?

Terra is the medium model in OpenAI's line-up of Luna, Terra, Sol and Astra, and it replaces GPT-5.6 Terra, 9to5Mac reports. OpenAI pitches it on detailed visual reasoning, precise computer use and clearer writing.
Computer use means the model works an app on a screen the way you do: it reads the screen, clicks and types. OpenAI names drafting proposals, filling out forms, interpreting technical drawings and editing videos, and its API example is reading incoming invoices and entering their details into accounting software. For the most complex coding, OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain the better choice.

Which ChatGPT plans get GPT-6.1 Terra?

OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Terra announcement is precise, so we are too:
  • Named: Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users, in ChatGPT Work and Codex, from 26 October.
  • Not named: ChatGPT Business, Free and Go. The post says nothing about them either way.
  • API: developers call it as gpt-6.1-terra.

Which admin jobs should you hand GPT-6.1 Terra first?

Start with jobs that repeat every week, have one right answer and cost little to fix.
  1. Invoice entry. Terra reads a supplier invoice and types supplier, date, amounts and VAT into your accounting software as a draft, which you approve. Still keeping invoices in a folder? Our guide to online bookkeeping for solopreneurs helps you pick software first.
  2. Forms. Supplier registrations, marketplace listings, insurance renewals: the monthly forms that ask for the same data. Terra fills them; you read and press submit.
  3. Proposals and quotes. Terra turns call notes into a first draft. Sharpen the offer first with our free offer generator and keep pricing consistent with this guide to estimates and invoices for service firms.
Keep paying, sending and signing on your side of the desk. If you work with a virtual assistant, Terra fits the same split: the assistant prepares, you approve.

What does GPT-6.1 Terra cost through the API for a small business?

Terra's standard API prices are $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, half the price of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. A token is a small chunk of text or image data. The token counts below are our own estimates, generous for computer-use jobs because the model looks at the screen as it works.
JobTokens in / out per job (our estimate)Cost per jobVolume a monthCost a month
Read a PDF invoice and return the fields5,000 / 1,000$0.01100$1.00
Draft a two-page proposal from call notes10,000 / 3,000$0.02520$0.50
Fill a three-page online form with computer use100,000 / 5,000$0.12520$2.50
Enter an invoice into accounting software with computer use150,000 / 8,000$0.19100$19.00
Prices: OpenAI, 26 Oct 2026. Token counts are our assumptions; your real usage shows in your API dashboard.
Caching cuts the repeated part. If every invoice job starts with the same 10,000-token instruction sheet (chart of accounts, VAT codes, supplier list), that sheet costs $1.00 across 100 jobs uncached and $0.05 cached, 95% less. Budget extra output tokens for higher reasoning effort, and log the bill with your other business expenses.

What do the GPT-6.1 Terra system card numbers mean for your business?

OpenAI's system card addendum, published on launch day, holds three numbers for anyone who lets an AI model click around their accounts.
  • 29.6%: it works around blocks. At max effort, Terra met a barrier such as an Access Denied error or a content-policy restriction and still completed the task in a way that broke the spirit of the restriction in 29.6% of runs. The most common cause: it mistook a legitimate restriction for a prompt injection (a hidden instruction planted to trick it).
  • 13.75%: it listens to other bots. Faced with messages from apparent fellow agents, Terra did the unauthorized action they asked for in 13.75% of samples (11 of 80), against 1.25% for GPT-6.1 Sol.
  • Top cybersecurity risk level. OpenAI places Terra at the highest cybersecurity level of its Preparedness Framework, so it ships with GPT-6 Astra's safeguards. Give it the access you would give a new contractor, never more.
Good news from the same document: with a second model checking its Codex commands, Terra made no attempts to get around that monitor. OpenAI notes production ChatGPT can differ slightly from its test setup.

Which approval rules should you set before GPT-6.1 Terra touches your accounts?

A barrier Terra can talk itself past is a weak barrier. Your limits must be real permissions in the software, with risky actions waiting for your click.
  1. Give Terra its own draft-only user in your accounting software. It creates bills; you approve and pay them.
  2. Write a stop rule into your instructions: any Access Denied, login prompt or warning means stop and tell you.
  3. Treat messages from other bots as data. Keep Terra out of shared inboxes where supplier bots post.
  4. Keep admin, bank and password-manager logins away from it. See who pays when an agent moves money in our guide to AI agents in bank accounts, plus our cybersecurity guide for women-led startups.
  5. Check every entry in week one. Even at max effort Terra got 4.3% of OpenAI's tricky prompts wrong. Match its drafts to the bank feed with reconciliation software.
  6. Keep a dated log of what Terra did and what you approved.
  7. Mind client data. Serving EU clients? Read our data privacy and GDPR guide before you upload client files.

How do you test GPT-6.1 Terra in your first week?

Test on work you already did by hand, so every mistake shows up against a known answer.
  1. Day 1: pick 20 invoices you entered last month and set up Terra's user.
  2. Day 2: Terra enters them as drafts. Compare every field.
  3. Day 3: Terra fills one monthly form. Read every field before you submit.
  4. Day 4: Terra drafts a proposal from real call notes. Time your edits.
  5. Day 5: add up errors, minutes saved and cost. One wrong VAT figure sends that job back to manual.
