Open-Source Canva AI Alternatives (2027): Free AI Design and Image Tools You Can Run Yourself

Open-Source Canva AI Alternatives: Free AI Design and Image Tools You Can Run Yourself

Canva's AI tools are handy: type a prompt and get an image, erase an object, expand a photo past its frame or remove a background in one click. But most of the photo tools sit behind a paid plan, every AI action draws from a monthly allowance, and your images and prompts go through Canva's cloud. Open-source AI tools give you the same building blocks on your own computer or server: text to image, generative fill, background removal and upscaling, with no per-image limit and no subscription. This guide covers the open-source tools that replace Canva's AI features, what each one does, its licence, the hardware it needs and when it last shipped. We checked every project on its official site and GitHub in November 2026, and we explain which AI models are not open source even when the app is. If you want free design apps with templates rather than AI image tools, read our guide to free Canva Pro alternatives.
Quick answer: for generative fill, expand and text to image inside a real painting app, use Krita with the AI Diffusion plugin; for the most powerful and flexible image pipeline, use ComfyUI; for a canvas-style AI editor that feels closest to Canva's Magic tools, use InvokeAI; to remove backgrounds in bulk, use rembg; to upscale photos on a desktop, use Upscayl; and for the layouts, social posts and brand pages that Canva is known for, use Penpot. Check each AI model's licence before commercial use.

Canva's AI Features in 2027: What You Are Replacing

Canva now groups its AI tools under the name Canva AI (the old Magic Studio name survives mainly in Canva's AI indemnity offer). On the Canva pricing page (checked November 2026) the plans are Free, Pro, Business and Enterprise. The Free plan gets limited access to Canva's Standard and Premium AI tools; creating images with Canva AI counts as a Standard AI tool. The photo tools founders use most, Magic Edit (change part of an image with a prompt), Magic Eraser, Magic Expand, Magic Grab and the Photo Background Remover, are listed for Pro, Business and Enterprise, not for Free. Standard, Premium and Ultra AI tools share a monthly AI allowance that varies by plan, Pro gets ten times the Free allowance, and extra AI is sold as an add-on.
Each tool below replaces one or more of these features. None of them is a one-click copy of Canva, but together they cover text to image, generative fill and erase, expand, background removal, upscaling and layout design.

The Best Open-Source Canva AI Alternatives in 2027

1. Krita + AI Diffusion: generative fill, expand and text to image in a painting app

Krita is a free and open-source painting program under the GNU GPL; versions 5.3.4 and 6.0.4 came out on 15 September 2026, and Krita calls 6.0.4 the more experimental of the two. Krita has no generative AI of its own, but the Generative AI for Krita plugin (GPL-3.0) adds it inside the canvas you already paint on. Select an area and fill it with or without a prompt, add or remove objects, expand the image past its edges, sketch and let live painting refine it, or upscale to 4K and 8K. It also supports ControlNet, reference images and regions, so you can steer a result instead of rolling the dice. The plugin runs ComfyUI in the background and can install it for you; it supports Flux 2, Z-Image, Stable Diffusion 1.5, SDXL and Illustrious models. Locally it recommends an NVIDIA GPU with at least 6 GB of VRAM (AMD, Intel and Apple Silicon also work); without a GPU, the same developer runs Interstice, an online generation service that needs no GPU, while the plugin itself stays 100% free on local hardware. Version 1.53.0 came out in August 2026 and needs Krita 5.2.0 or newer. Background removal is not included; the same developer offers a separate plugin with AI selection and background tools.

2. ComfyUI: the most flexible open-source AI image engine

ComfyUI is a node-based engine for image, video, audio and 3D generation, and its source code is under the GPL-3.0. You connect boxes for a model, a prompt, a mask and an upscaler into a workflow, save it and run it again whenever you need the same type of image, which is how teams build repeatable brand visuals. It supports Stable Diffusion 1.5, SDXL and 3.5, the Flux.1 and Flux.2 families and editing models such as Flux Kontext and Qwen Image Edit. There is a desktop app for Windows and macOS, a portable Windows build and a manual install for NVIDIA, AMD, Intel and Apple Silicon. The README states that it runs fully offline and that the core downloads nothing unless you ask; optional paid API nodes connect closed models, and Comfy Cloud is a paid hosted version. Version 0.43.2 came out in October 2026, and new versions ship several times a month. The learning curve is the steepest on this list.

3. InvokeAI: a canvas-style AI editor, now run by its community

InvokeAI is a locally hosted web interface for AI image generation under the Apache-2.0 licence, which allows commercial use of the software. Its unified canvas, with inpainting, outpainting and brush tools, is the closest open-source match to Canva's Magic Edit and Magic Expand: you paint a mask, write what should go there and keep refining the result. It also has node workflows, galleries that remember each prompt and setting, upscaling and SAM segmentation for selecting objects. You install it with the Invoke launcher. One change matters: according to the project's website, the Invoke hosted platform has been shut down because the founding team joined Adobe, and the open-source project is now maintained by the community. It is clearly alive: version 6.14.3 came out in October 2026, with 7.0 in alpha.

4. GIMP 3 with OpenVINO AI plugins: AI inside the classic photo editor

GIMP is the free and open-source image editor (GPL-3.0); version 3.2.6 came out on 10 September 2026. GIMP itself has no generative AI, but Intel's OpenVINO AI plugins for GIMP (Apache-2.0) add it. They bring Stable Diffusion text to image and inpainting (SD 1.5, SDXL and SD 3.5 Medium Turbo, plus ControlNet), a faster FastSD mode, super-resolution upscaling and semantic segmentation for selecting subjects. The plugins are made for GIMP 3, run on Windows and Linux (tested on Ubuntu 24.04) and run through Intel's OpenVINO on a CPU, GPU or NPU, a useful option for laptops without an NVIDIA card. Version 3.3.0 came out in June 2026. The plugin README itself points out that the Stable Diffusion model licence is not an open-source licence. For a photo editor without AI, see our open-source GIMP alternatives.

5. rembg: an open-source background remover you can script

rembg is an MIT-licensed tool that removes image backgrounds, the job of Canva's Photo Background Remover. You can use it as a command-line tool, a Python library, an HTTP server or a Docker container, so it fits both a one-off product photo and a folder of 500 catalogue images. It ships with several models (u2net, isnet, BiRefNet variants, SAM and BRIA's RMBG) that download on first use, and it runs on a CPU, with optional NVIDIA or AMD GPU support. Read the model licences: the README says the model weights carry their own licences, and the default BRIA model needs a paid agreement for commercial use, so pick another model for client work. Version 2.0.86 came out in October 2026.

6. Upscayl: a free desktop AI upscaler

Upscayl is a free and open-source AI image upscaler for Windows 10 and later, macOS 12 and later and Linux, licensed under the AGPL-3.0. Drop in a low-resolution product photo or old logo, pick a model and get a larger, sharper version, one image or a whole folder at a time. It needs a GPU that supports Vulkan; the README warns that many integrated graphics chips do not work. Its latest desktop release on GitHub is still 2.15.0 from December 2024, although the code was updated in October 2026, and the team now promotes Upscayl Cloud, a separate online service. If you only need upscaling, Krita AI Diffusion, ComfyUI and InvokeAI can upscale too.

7. Penpot: open-source layouts and design systems, now open to AI agents

Penpot covers the part of Canva the image tools do not: pages, social posts, presentations and brand assets laid out on a canvas. It is the open-source design platform for teams, its code is under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, and you can use the free cloud or self-host it. It has components, native design tokens and shared libraries, so your brand colours and fonts stay consistent, plus interactive prototypes and CSS Grid and Flex layouts. Its AI angle is different from Canva's: Penpot offers an open MCP server, so AI agents can design inside your Penpot files. Version 2.18.5 came out in October 2026, with 2.19 in release candidates. Open-Source Apps, Not Always Open-Source Models

The apps above are open source, but the AI model you load into them has its own licence, and that licence decides whether you can use the images commercially. Checked on the official model pages on Hugging Face and Stability AI in November 2026:
  • FLUX.1 [schnell], FLUX.2 [klein] 4B, Z-Image-Turbo and Qwen-Image: Apache-2.0, an open-source licence that allows commercial use.
  • FLUX.1 [dev] and FLUX.2 [dev]: Black Forest Labs' non-commercial licences, so not open source.
  • Stable Diffusion 3.5: the Stability AI Community License, free for organisations with less than $1M in annual revenue; above that you need an Enterprise licence. Not an OSI open-source licence.
  • Stable Diffusion 1.5 and SDXL: CreativeML OpenRAIL licences, which allow commercial use with usage restrictions; Intel's GIMP plugin README notes that this is not an open-source licence.
  • Background removal models: rembg's default BRIA model needs a paid agreement for commercial use; other models have their own terms.

Open-Source AI Image Tools That Slowed Down or Changed

Several popular tools still appear on open-source lists but are no longer the best place to start:
  • Fooocus: the simple prompt-and-go image generator (GPL-3.0) is now in limited long-term support with bug fixes only, and its README says there are no plans to add newer model architectures; it points users to Forge, ComfyUI and SwarmUI. Its last release, 2.5.5, came out in August 2024.
  • Stable Diffusion WebUI (AUTOMATIC1111): still AGPL-3.0 and still used, but there has been no new release since version 1.10.1. Krita AI Diffusion, ComfyUI or InvokeAI support newer models.
  • Stable Diffusion WebUI Forge: AGPL-3.0, but its code was last updated in July 2025.
  • IOPaint: the open-source object eraser and inpainting tool (Apache-2.0) is archived on GitHub; its last release, 1.5.3, came out in November 2024. Use the inpainting in Krita AI Diffusion or InvokeAI instead.
  • InvokeAI's hosted service: shut down when the founding team joined Adobe; the open-source app continues (see above).

What Happened to the Tools From Our Earlier List

The 2025 version of this article mixed AI tools with general design software. GIMP, Krita and Penpot stay above, now with their AI options. The rest:
  • Inkscape, Blender, ImageMagick and Pixelitor: good open-source tools for vector graphics, 3D, command-line image processing and Java-based photo editing, but none of them replaces Canva's AI features. For vector and photo work see our open-source Photoshop alternatives and open-source Affinity Photo alternatives.
  • Gravit Designer: its old address now redirects to CorelDRAW's Go product page; it is closed source, so we removed it.
  • Components AI: its website still calls it an open-source design tool, but the footer reads 2018 to 2022 and we found no sign of recent activity, so we removed it.
  • Polotno Studio: a free online design editor, but we could not find a public source repository and the Polotno SDK it is built on is sold with pricing plans, so it is not on this open-source list. See our open-source Adobe Express alternatives for template-based editors.

Which Open-Source Canva AI Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You want Magic Edit, Eraser and Expand in an app that feels like an image editor: Krita with the AI Diffusion plugin, or InvokeAI.
  • You want full control and repeatable brand workflows: ComfyUI.
  • You have an Intel laptop and use GIMP already: GIMP 3 with the OpenVINO AI plugins.
  • You need clean product photos with no background, in bulk: rembg.
  • You need bigger, sharper images: Upscayl.
  • You need layouts, social posts and a brand system: Penpot.
  • You have no GPU and no time for setup: stay with a hosted tool. See our Pixlr alternatives and our guide to the free AI image generator.

How Founders Use Open-Source AI Design Tools

Most early-stage founders need the same five images over and over: a hero image for the landing page, product shots with a clean background, social posts, an image for each blog article and a pitch-deck cover. A practical open-source setup looks like this: generate or edit the visual in Krita AI Diffusion or InvokeAI, cut out product photos with rembg, upscale anything small with Upscayl, and lay out the final post or page in Penpot with your brand colours saved as tokens. Once a workflow works, save it in ComfyUI so the next 50 images look the same. Use an Apache-2.0 model when the images go into ads or client work, and keep the prompts and source files in your own folder, not in someone else's cloud.
