Open-Source Power BI Alternatives (2027): 10 Free BI and Dashboard Tools, From Apache Superset to Metabase, With AI Features Compared

Open-Source Power BI Alternatives: Free BI and Dashboard Tools for Teams Leaving Microsoft

Start with the part most lists skip: Power BI itself has a free part. Power BI Desktop is a free download for Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016 and later, and a free account lets you build reports for yourself. What costs money is sharing, Copilot and the Microsoft Fabric capacity behind it. People look for an open-source alternative to Power BI when they work on a Mac or Linux, when every viewer needs a paid licence, when Copilot turns out to need a Fabric capacity, or when they simply want their dashboards on their own server. This guide lists open-source BI and dashboard tools that replace Power BI for a startup or small business. For each one we checked the licence and the latest release on GitHub and the official website on 3 November 2026, and we note which ones let you ask questions in plain English, the open-source answer to Copilot.
Quick answer: the closest open-source replacement for Power BI reports is Apache Superset (Apache 2.0, no-code charts, Excel and CSV upload); the easiest for non-technical teams is Metabase, whose free edition includes its Metabot AI on the model of your choice; for metrics defined once, like DAX measures, use Lightdash (dbt) or Rill (YAML, with built-in chat); for a Copilot-style question box on your warehouse, try Wren AI; and for live product or server metrics, use Grafana. If you only need reports for yourself on Windows, the free Power BI Desktop may be all you need.

What Power BI Gives You for Free, and What It Costs in 2027

The Power BI pricing page (checked 3 November 2026) lists a free account that lets you create reports with Power BI Desktop and is included in the Microsoft Fabric free account. Sharing reports needs an upgrade: Power BI Pro costs $14 per user a month and Premium Per User $24 per user a month, both paid yearly. Fabric capacity is priced separately, and only from the F64 size up can people view Power BI content without their own per-user licence. There is no Mac or Linux version of Power BI Desktop: Microsoft lists Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016 or later as the minimum.
Copilot is where many small teams get surprised. Microsoft's Copilot overview says Copilot in Power BI, which answers questions about your data and writes DAX, needs a paid Fabric capacity (F2 or higher) or Power BI Premium (P1 or higher). Trial capacities and free SKUs are not supported, and a Pro or Premium Per User licence alone is not enough. There is no product called "Power BI AI", the phrase in the 2025 version of this article: Power BI's generative AI is called Copilot.

The Best Open-Source Power BI Alternatives in 2027

1. Apache Superset: the closest replacement for Power BI reports

Apache Superset describes itself as an open-source modern data exploration and visualization platform. It is an Apache Software Foundation project under the Apache 2.0 licence, with a no-code chart builder, a SQL editor, a wide range of chart types and a lightweight semantic layer where you define metrics and custom dimensions once, the nearest thing to DAX measures in this list. For Excel users, Superset's upload API accepts CSV, Excel and columnar files into a database table. Since version 5.0 it also has an MCP server: you connect Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP client and create charts from natural language, with your own AI model doing the thinking. The latest stable release is 6.1.0 (May 2026), and 7.0 was in release-candidate testing in October 2026. If you would rather not run servers, Preset, a managed Superset service, is free forever for up to 5 users, and Professional costs $20 per user a month billed annually.

2. Metabase: the easiest switch for non-technical teams

Metabase is the tool most small teams can set up in an afternoon: connect a database, click together a question, share a dashboard. The Metabase pricing page lists the Open Source edition as free with unlimited users, more than 20 data sources, an MCP server and AI questions on your preferred model, so you get a Copilot-style assistant without a Fabric capacity: bring your own AI provider key, or use Metabase's AI service at $3.75 per million tokens. Admins can turn on CSV uploads to PostgreSQL, MySQL, Snowflake, Redshift or ClickHouse, handy for teams used to dropping spreadsheets into Power BI. The code is AGPL outside its enterprise folder. Version 0.65.2 came out on 30 October 2026, and the homepage announces Metabase 65 with data apps and AI Research. Row- and column-level permissions and SSO sit on Pro ($575 a month with 10 users); Cloud Starter costs $100 a month with 5 users.

3. Grafana: dashboards for live metrics

Grafana is the open-source (AGPL-3.0) standard for operational dashboards: product usage, sign-ups per minute, servers and anything stored as time series, with more than 150 plugins for data sources. It is weaker than Power BI for classic business reports such as revenue by customer segment, and it has no shared measure layer: each panel runs its own query. Version 13.3.0 came out on 27 October 2026. The Grafana Cloud free tier gives 3 active visualization users, 10,000 active metric series, 50 GB of logs and 14 days of retention, and includes Grafana Assistant, its AI helper, for up to 3 active AI users. Pro starts at $19 a month plus usage.

4. Lightdash: metrics defined once, on top of dbt

Lightdash turns the models and metrics in a dbt project into a self-service BI tool, so revenue or active users mean the same thing in every chart. For a Power BI team that has spent years tuning DAX measures, this is the most natural home for the same logic, written in code. The code is MIT-licensed outside its enterprise folder, and releases come out several times a week: 3.142.0 appeared on 3 November 2026. The self-hosted open-source edition has community support on Slack. Note that the pricing page lists AI agents and MCP on Cloud Pro, at $3,000 a month with unlimited users, not on the open-source card.

5. Rill: BI as code with built-in chat

Rill is an Apache-2.0 project that defines dashboards, a semantic layer of dimensions and measures, and security policies in YAML and SQL, and queries ClickHouse for very large data or DuckDB for smaller sets. Its README lists conversational BI, so business users ask questions in natural language, and an MCP server that connects AI agents to your metrics; because everything is code, coding agents such as Claude Code can build the project for you. Version 0.91.1 came out on 3 November 2026. Sharing with a team is built around Rill Cloud: Starter costs $20 per seat a month for up to 20 seats, with a $250 usage credit on every plan.

6. Wren AI: an open-source answer to Copilot

Wren AI calls itself an open-source generative BI engine. It gives AI agents such as Claude Code, Cursor or any MCP client a governed semantic layer, so a question like "net revenue in EMEA last quarter" becomes correct SQL using your own definitions, across more than 22 data sources. Read the licence carefully: the engine, semantic layer, text-to-SQL, MCP server and command-line tool are Apache-2.0 and self-hostable, while the GenBI interface, dashboards and embedding are commercial, sold as Wren AI Cloud or Enterprise Plus. Version 0.17.1 came out on 30 October 2026, and the Wren AI website offers a 7-day free trial of the hosted product. It fits a founder who wants plain-English answers from a warehouse more than a drag-and-drop report designer.

7. Redash: SQL dashboards, schedules and alerts

Redash combines a browser SQL editor with charts, dashboards, scheduled refreshes and alerts. It is BSD-2 licensed and still maintained: version 26.9.0 came out in September 2026. There is no hosted plan and no AI assistant, so it suits a team where one person writes SQL and everyone else reads the dashboards.

8. Evidence: reports as code in SQL and Markdown

Evidence is an MIT-licensed framework that calls itself a code-based alternative to drag-and-drop BI tools. You write reports in SQL and Markdown, keep them in Git and self-host the result as a website. Because everything is text, AI coding agents can write and edit reports. The repository was updated in November 2026, while its last tagged release dates from February 2026. The hosted Team plan on Evidence's pricing page costs $2,500 a month with a 30-day trial, so for a startup the realistic route is self-hosting.

9. Helical Insight: enterprise features in the free edition

Helical Insight is a Java-based BI platform whose community edition is on GitHub under AGPL-3.0. Its homepage promises every feature free forever, including AI-powered conversational analytics, drag-and-drop reports and dashboards, embedding with SSO, row-level security and scheduled exports to PDF, XLS and CSV. Those are features Power BI sells through Premium and Embedded, so it is worth testing on a startup budget. Version 7.0.0 came out in July 2026; setup is heavier than Metabase, and the Enterprise edition is sold through sales.

10. Knowage: a classic BI suite with OLAP and KPIs

Knowage is an open-source analytics suite from the Italian Engineering Group. Its community edition is AGPL-3.0 and includes dashboards, reporting, OLAP pivot analysis, KPI management and Python integration, which will feel familiar to anyone who built cubes and scorecards in the Microsoft stack. It is actively developed: version 9.0.12 came out on 2 November 2026. The AI Virtual Assistant and the data preparation tools are marked Enterprise Edition only in its README.

Discontinued, Changed or Not Like-for-Like

The 2025 version of this article listed some tools that do not belong on an open-source Power BI shortlist any more:
  • Vanna: the MIT-licensed text-to-SQL library was a popular open-source Copilot substitute, but its GitHub repository is now archived (read-only), with the last release in February 2026. Use Wren AI or Metabase's Metabot instead.
  • Eclipse BIRT: still maintained (EPL-2.0, version 4.25.0 in September 2026), but it is a report designer for Java applications, not a self-service BI tool.
  • KNIME Analytics Platform: free and open source according to KNIME, but it is a visual tool for data-science workflows rather than shared dashboards.
  • Plotly Dash and Taipy: both are open-source Python frameworks (Dash MIT, version 4.5.0 in October 2026; Taipy Apache-2.0, last stable release 4.1.1 in February 2026) for building data apps in code. Good for developers, not a Power BI replacement for business users.

Which Open-Source Power BI Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You want Power BI-style reports, with a more permissive licence and Excel uploads: Apache Superset, self-hosted or free on Preset for up to 5 users.
  • Your team is not technical and wants AI questions without Fabric: Metabase Open Source with Metabot on your own AI key.
  • You rely on carefully built DAX measures: rebuild them once as dbt metrics in Lightdash or YAML measures in Rill.
  • You mainly want a Copilot-style question box on your warehouse: Wren AI, or Rill's conversational BI.
  • Your dashboards track live product or server metrics: Grafana, with a free cloud tier.
  • You need SSO, row-level security and embedding without Premium or Embedded fees: Helical Insight.
  • You work in Excel on Windows and only need reports for yourself: keep the free Power BI Desktop and skip the migration.

How Founders Use Open-Source BI Instead of Power BI

Power BI hides the data layer inside Fabric. With open-source BI you choose it yourself, and for most startups that means a PostgreSQL database or a small warehouse. If you are weighing warehouses, compare our open-source Snowflake alternatives and Databricks alternatives first, then point your BI tool at the result. Pick three to five numbers that show whether your business model works (our list of key metrics in the business model canvas helps), build one dashboard, and review it in the same weekly meeting before you add more charts.
A BI tool is one part of an open-source stack. Many small teams keep their source data in a spreadsheet-style database such as the tools in our open-source Airtable alternatives, build internal admin screens with the open-source Retool alternatives and track website traffic with the open-source Google Analytics alternatives. Before you build anything, validate your startup idea with real customers, and once your data tells a story, turn it into articles with the F/MS AI SEO Tool so customers find you in Google and AI assistants.

FAQ About Open-Source Power BI Alternatives

Is Power BI free?

Partly. Power BI Desktop is a free Windows app, and a free account lets you create reports for yourself. Sharing reports needs Power BI Pro at $14 per user a month or Premium Per User at $24, both paid yearly.

Is there an open-source version of Power BI?

No. Power BI is a closed-source Microsoft product. The closest open-source replacements are Apache Superset for report building and Metabase for teams that want the easiest setup.

What is the best free Power BI alternative for a small business?

Metabase Open Source is the easiest to run and is free with unlimited users. Apache Superset is more powerful and is free on Preset for up to 5 users if you do not want to host it.

Can I use an open-source Power BI alternative on a Mac?

Yes. Superset, Metabase, Grafana and the other tools here run in the browser, so they work on Mac, Linux and Windows. Power BI Desktop itself needs Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016 or later.

Does Copilot in Power BI work with a Pro licence?

Not on its own. Microsoft says Copilot needs a paid Fabric capacity (F2 or higher) or Power BI Premium (P1 or higher); trial capacities and a Pro or Premium Per User licence alone are not enough.

Which open-source BI tools have AI like Copilot?

Metabase includes Metabot in its free edition, using your own AI model. Rill has built-in conversational BI, Wren AI turns questions into governed SQL, and Superset has an MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT and other AI clients.

What replaces DAX measures in open-source BI?

A semantic or metrics layer: Superset metrics, Metabase's semantic layer, dbt metrics in Lightdash, YAML measures in Rill or the MDL layer in Wren AI. You define each number once and every chart uses it.

Can I upload Excel files like in Power BI?

Yes, in some tools. Superset accepts CSV, Excel and columnar uploads into a database table, and Metabase lets admins turn on CSV uploads to PostgreSQL, MySQL, Snowflake, Redshift or ClickHouse.

Is Redash still maintained?

Yes. Redash is a BSD-2 licensed project on GitHub, and version 26.9.0 came out in September 2026. It has no hosted plan and no AI assistant.

Where can I get a backlink by writing about my startup?

You can publish a guest post in one of the Fe/male Switch startup blogs, which rank in Google and in AI tools. Get a quality backlink.
