Free Looker Alternatives (2027): 10 Free and Cheaper BI Tools to Replace Looker and Looker Studio (Now Data Studio)

Free Looker alternatives 2027: 10 free and cheaper BI tools

Free Looker Alternatives: Free BI Tools for Dashboards, Reports and AI Questions on Your Data

Looker is Google Cloud's enterprise business intelligence platform: a semantic layer written in LookML, governed dashboards, and Gemini-powered Conversational Analytics. It is also priced through Google's sales team on an annual commitment, which puts it out of reach for most early-stage startups. Many people searching for a Looker alternative actually mean Looker Studio, Google's free report builder, which was renamed Data Studio in April 2026. This guide covers both cases. We checked every tool below on its official pricing page, and every open-source project on GitHub, in October 2026: what is really free, what the limits are, and what the cheapest paid plan costs.
Quick answer: if you want something free and as easy as Looker Studio, use Data Studio (the same tool under its new name), Power BI Desktop on Windows or Zoho Analytics' free plan; if you want a free, self-hosted replacement for Looker itself, use Metabase or Apache Superset; if you like Looker's semantic layer and your data team uses dbt, use Lightdash; for metrics and monitoring, use Grafana; for SQL-first teams, Redash or Evidence; and for public data stories, Tableau Public.

Looker vs Looker Studio vs Data Studio: What the Names Mean in 2027

Google's naming has changed twice, so older articles (including the 2025 version of this one) mix the products up. According to Google Cloud's Looker page, Looker is an agentic BI platform built on a semantic layer: you define business metrics once in LookML, and dashboards, Conversational Analytics agents and MCP-connected AI tools all read from it. The Looker pricing page lists three editions (Standard, Enterprise and Embed), all on an annual commitment with the price set by sales. Standard is meant for teams of fewer than 50 users and includes 10 Standard users and 2 Developer users. Conversational Analytics comes with a monthly token allowance; overage fees of $3 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens are listed, but Google says it will give at least 90 days' notice before it starts billing them.
Looker Studio was a different, free product: the drag-and-drop report builder that used to be called Google Data Studio. On 16 April 2026 the Data Studio release notes announced that Looker Studio had been rebranded as Data Studio; the same notes say Gemini in Looker (the AI features inside Looker Studio) is now Gemini in Data Studio. Old lookerstudio.google.com links now open datastudio.google.com, and Looker Studio Pro is now Data Studio Pro. So if you searched for "free Looker Studio alternatives", the free tool you know still exists; it simply has its old name back.

The 10 Best Free Looker Alternatives in 2027

1. Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio): Google's own free option

Data Studio is free for report creators and viewers. Google says it connects directly to more than 1,400 data sources, including Google Sheets, Google Ads, BigQuery and Google Analytics, and you build interactive reports with a drag-and-drop editor, then share or embed them. Since 30 July 2026, Conversational Analytics in Data Studio is generally available: you can ask questions in plain language through data agents that someone has built in BigQuery. Data Studio Pro adds team content management, Google Cloud support and admin controls for $9 per user per project per month. It has no semantic layer like LookML, so metric definitions live in each report, which is the main thing you give up compared with Looker.

2. Microsoft Power BI: free desktop reports for Windows users

Power BI Desktop is a free Windows app (Windows 10 or later) for building data models and interactive reports, and a free account lets you publish to your own My workspace. The catch is sharing: Microsoft's licence guide says free users who want to share reports or publish to other workspaces need Power BI Pro or Premium Per User. Pro costs $14 per user per month and Premium Per User $24, both paid yearly. For a solo founder analysing her own numbers on a Windows laptop, the free version is plenty.

3. Metabase: the easiest free, self-hosted Looker replacement

Metabase's Open Source edition is free with unlimited users and unlimited questions and dashboards. Non-technical teammates can explore data by clicking, analysts can write SQL, and the free edition now includes AI questions on the model of your choice and an MCP server. The code is AGPL-licensed outside its enterprise folder, and new releases came out on 27 October 2026. If you do not want to run a server, Metabase Cloud Starter costs $100 a month with 5 users included and $6 for each extra user. Row-level permissions, SSO and white-labelling are on the paid Pro plan ($575 a month).

4. Apache Superset: open-source BI for big datasets

Apache Superset is an Apache Software Foundation project under the Apache 2.0 licence, so you can use and modify it freely, including commercially. It has a no-code chart builder, a SQL editor and many chart types, and it scales to large warehouses. Development is very active: version 7.0 was in release-candidate testing in October 2026. Self-hosting it takes more engineering than Metabase; if you would rather not, Preset (a managed Superset service) has a Starter plan that is free forever for up to 5 users.

5. Lightdash: the closest free match to Looker's semantic layer

Lightdash turns the models and metrics in your dbt project into a self-service BI tool, which is the open-source idea closest to Looker's LookML: define a metric once and everyone uses the same number. The open-source version is self-hosted with unlimited seats and community support on Slack; the code is MIT-licensed outside its enterprise folder, and it ships several releases a day (version 3.91.0 on 28 October 2026). The hosted Cloud Pro plan is $3,000 a month with no per-seat pricing, so for a startup the realistic free route is self-hosting.

6. Grafana: free dashboards for metrics, logs and monitoring

Grafana is the open-source (AGPL-3.0) standard for live operational dashboards, with more than 150 plugins to pull data from many sources into one view. It is not a classic business-reporting tool like Looker, but if your dashboards are about product usage, servers or real-time numbers it fits better. The Grafana Cloud free tier costs $0 with 3 active visualization users, 10,000 metrics series, 50 GB of logs and 14 days of retention; Pro starts at $19 a month plus usage. Version 13.3.0 came out on 27 October 2026.

7. Redash: free SQL queries, dashboards and alerts

Redash combines a browser SQL editor with dashboards, scheduled refreshes and alerts, and supports more than 35 SQL and NoSQL data sources. It is BSD-2 licensed and community-maintained; it is still active, with version 26.9.0 released in September 2026, but there is no hosted plan, so you run it yourself. It suits a team where someone writes SQL and everyone else reads the dashboards.

8. Evidence: BI as code in SQL and Markdown

Evidence describes itself as an open-source, code-based alternative to drag-and-drop BI tools: you write reports in SQL and Markdown, keep them in Git and publish them as a website. Evidence Core is MIT-licensed and you can self-host the generated site for free; the hosted platform on Evidence's pricing page costs $2,500 a month for unlimited users. Pick it if your team already writes code and wants reports that work well with AI coding agents.

9. Tableau Public: free, but only for public data

Tableau Public is free, and its help pages are clear that workbooks and data saved to a Tableau Public profile are not private and anyone can access them. Tableau Desktop Public Edition can also save workbooks locally. It is excellent for public datasets, portfolios and data journalism, but never upload customer or company data to it.

10. Zoho Analytics: a hosted free plan for very small teams

Zoho Analytics has a free plan with 2 users, 10,000 rows and unlimited reports and dashboards, and a 15-day trial of its paid plans with no credit card. The first paid plan, Basic, raises the limit to 2 users and 0.5 million rows. It is the simplest hosted option on this list if you want no-code dashboards and do not want to run a server, as long as your data stays small.

Looker Alternatives That Changed or Are Not Like-for-Like

Some tools from older lists, including the 2025 version of this article, need a label:
  • Google Looker Studio: not discontinued, renamed. It has been called Data Studio since 16 April 2026, and Looker Studio Pro is now Data Studio Pro.
  • "Looker AI": not a separate product. Looker's AI features are Gemini-powered Conversational Analytics and Dashboard Agents inside the paid Looker platform.
  • Umami: a privacy-friendly web analytics tool (free cloud plan up to 100K events a month), so it replaces Google Analytics, not a BI platform like Looker.
  • Plotly: its open-source Dash is a Python framework for building data apps, which needs a developer; it is not a ready-made dashboard tool.
  • KNIME: KNIME Analytics Platform is still free and open source, but it is a data-science workflow tool rather than a dashboard tool for the whole team.

Which Free Looker Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You used Looker Studio and liked it: keep using it; it is free and now called Data Studio.
  • You live in Excel and Microsoft 365: Power BI Desktop, and budget for Pro once you need to share.
  • You want a free, self-hosted tool your whole team can use: Metabase, or Apache Superset for larger data and SQL-heavy analysts.
  • You want Looker-style governed metrics: Lightdash on top of dbt.
  • You need live product or system dashboards: Grafana.
  • Your team writes SQL or code: Redash for queries and alerts, Evidence for reports as code.
  • You want hosted, no-code and tiny data: Zoho Analytics' free plan. For public data only: Tableau Public.

How Founders Use Free BI Tools

Early on, a startup does not need an enterprise semantic layer; it needs a handful of numbers it trusts and looks at every week. Start with the metrics that prove your business model works (our list of key metrics in the Business Model Canvas is a good checklist), put them on one free dashboard, and review it with your team. During a 30-day validation sprint, a simple Data Studio or Metabase dashboard of sign-ups, activation and pre-orders tells you faster than any opinion whether the idea is working. If you later move to BigQuery and Looker, programmes such as Google for Startups Cloud Program can cover part of the cloud bill.
