Moz vs SE Ranking: Which SEO Tool Is Better for Startups?
For a startup, an SEO tool has two jobs: show you which searches you can realistically win, and tell you whether your rankings and links are moving. Moz Pro and SE Ranking both do this, and both now track how your brand appears in AI answers as well as in Google. They differ in price, limits and focus: Moz is known for its Domain Authority metric and link data, SE Ranking for generous rank tracking and local SEO in one plan. We checked both tools' official pricing and product pages in October 2026, including plans, trials and free tools.
Quick answer: choose SE Ranking if you want the most rank tracking, local SEO and site audits for your money and a 14-day trial without a credit card. Choose Moz Pro if link building and authority metrics (Domain Authority, Spam Score, Brand Authority) drive your SEO, or if you mainly need Moz's free tools and MozBar. On a tight budget, start with both tools' free versions before you pay for either.

What Is Moz Pro?
Moz Pro is the SEO suite from Moz, the company behind the Domain Authority score, which has been in SEO for more than 20 years. It combines keyword research, rank tracking, site crawls, link research and AI visibility tracking: you add prompts and see how often ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode mention your brand next to competitors. Moz says its Keyword Explorer draws on an index of more than 1.25 billion keywords and its Link Explorer on more than 40 trillion links.
- Plans (2026 pricing): Standard $99 a month ($79 billed yearly) with 1 user, 3 tracked sites and 300 tracked keywords; Medium $179 ($143) with 2 users, 10 sites and 1,500 keywords; Large $299 ($239) with 3 users, 25 sites and 3,000 keywords. An entry-level Starter plan costs $49 a month for people who manage a single website.
- Keyword limits: Standard includes 150 keyword queries a month, which is tight for regular research; Medium jumps to 5,000.
- Extras: additional users cost $49 a month each, and keywords, campaigns and crawl limits can be topped up. You can cancel or change plans at any time.
- Free trial: 7 days on Medium. Moz has no student discount but points students to the trial or a free Moz Community account.
Best for: link building, outreach and competitor link research, and teams that report on Domain Authority.
What Is SE Ranking?
SE Ranking is an all-in-one SEO platform built around rank tracking, with keyword and competitor research, backlink checking, website audits, local SEO, content tools and AI search tracking in the same plan. SE Ranking says its database covers 5.4 billion keywords across 188 locations and 2.9 trillion backlinks from 411 million referring domains; like Moz's figures, these are the company's own numbers and are counted differently.
- Plans (October 2026, euro prices): Core €109 a month (€87.20 billed yearly) with 10 projects, 1 manager seat, 2,000 keywords tracked daily, 25 AI prompts a day and 250,000 audited pages a month; Growth €235 (€188) with 30 projects, 3 seats, 5,000 keywords and full history. Enterprise plans are priced on request.
- Included on Core: unlimited keyword, competitor and backlink research, website and on-page audits, Data Studio, Matomo, Google Analytics and Search Console integrations, 25 articles in the content tool, and API and MCP access.
- Add-ons: Agency Pack with white-label reports (+€59 a month, yearly billing) and a bigger AI Search toolkit (+€79 a month, or €63.20 billed yearly).
- Free trial: 14 days, no credit card, fully functional with starter limits (10 projects, 750 tracked keywords a day, 20 AI prompts a day). Payments are generally non-refundable, so test during the trial.
Best for: daily rank tracking for many keywords, local businesses, small agencies and founders who want one affordable tool for most SEO tasks.

Moz vs SE Ranking: Feature by Feature
Keyword research
Both tools give search volume, keyword difficulty and suggestions. The practical difference is limits: SE Ranking's Core plan includes unlimited keyword research, while Moz Standard allows 150 keyword queries a month, so heavy keyword research on Moz really starts on Medium. If you mainly need ideas, Google's own free tool is a good complement; see our Keyword Tool vs Keyword Planner comparison.
Backlinks and authority
This is Moz's home ground. Domain Authority, Page Authority and Spam Score are used across the industry, and MozBar shows them on any page for free. Moz has also added Brand Authority, a 1 to 100 score for brand strength. SE Ranking's backlink checker and its own Domain Trust score cover the same ground for most startups, and its backlink research is unlimited on Core. If backlinks are your main focus, also compare Ahrefs alternatives.
Rank tracking
SE Ranking was built as a rank tracker and it shows: 2,000 keywords tracked daily on its entry plan versus 300 on Moz Standard. For a startup tracking a few dozen keywords either is fine; for an agency or a content-heavy site SE Ranking is far cheaper per keyword. Our comparison of Ahrefs vs Wincher covers dedicated rank trackers too.
Local SEO
SE Ranking includes local marketing on every plan: 3 locations, a local and map rank tracker for 1,500 keywords and listing management in more than 100 directories. Moz handles local SEO in a separate product, Moz Local, with plans from $20 a month ($16 billed yearly) covering listings in 90+ directories and review monitoring.
AI search visibility
Both now track brand mentions in AI answers. Moz Pro Standard tracks 150 prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, and Moz lists sentiment analysis and AI citation data among its AI features. SE Ranking Core tracks 25 prompts a day across 5 LLMs, with a larger AI Search add-on for brands that want more. If you want to be the brand AI tools recommend, tracking is only half the job; you also need content that gets cited.
Free Moz and SE Ranking Tools You Can Use Today
You don't need a paid plan to start. Moz's free tools include Domain Analysis, Keyword Explorer, Link Explorer, Competitive Research, a Brand Authority checker, a local listing check and MozCast, its tracker of Google algorithm changes. A free Moz Community account gives limited access to MozBar, Keyword Explorer and Link Explorer.
MozBar is a free Chrome and Firefox extension that shows Page Authority, Domain Authority and Spam Score for any page you visit. SE Ranking offers free daily checks of its Google rank checker, website traffic checker and keyword research tool with no account, plus many small free tools such as a website authority checker, subdomain finder and title checker.

Which One Should a Startup Choose?
- You have almost no budget: MozBar and Moz's free tools, SE Ranking's free daily checks, plus Google Search Console. Pay only when you publish regularly.
- You want one affordable tool for everything: SE Ranking Core, for rank tracking, audits, keyword and backlink research and local SEO in one plan.
- Link building is your main growth channel: Moz Pro, for Domain Authority, Spam Score and link research.
- You are a local business: SE Ranking, because local SEO is included; with Moz you need Moz Local as well.
- You run an agency or freelance: SE Ranking with the Agency Pack for white-label reports, or Moz Medium for more seats and campaigns.
- You care about AI answers: both track AI visibility; compare the number of prompts and AI models in each plan.

How to Test Both Tools Before You Pay
- Start with the free tools. Install MozBar, check your domain in Moz's free tools and run SE Ranking's free rank and traffic checks. You may find that this is enough for now.
- Run SE Ranking's 14-day trial. It needs no credit card. Add your site, your real target keywords and two or three competitors.
- Run Moz Pro's 7-day trial on the same setup. Use the same keywords and competitors so you compare like with like, and check whose data matches your Google Search Console best.
- Compare and commit. Keep the tool you actually opened every day. Both give about 20% off for yearly billing, but SE Ranking payments are generally non-refundable, so decide during the trials.
Doing SEO before you have a product is also a cheap way to test demand: if nobody searches for the problem you solve, validate your startup idea before you build.
Turn Keywords Into Rankings With AI
An SEO tool tells you what to write; it doesn't write it. If publishing is your bottleneck, the F/MS AI SEO Tool turns a keyword into a full article written to rank on Google and to be cited by AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, with human editors checking the result. To keep rankings moving, track them with Moz, SE Ranking or one of these rank trackers.
