CorelDRAW Alternatives (2027): 9 Free and Paid Vector Design Tools Compared on Price, One-Time Licences, Platforms and CDR Files

CorelDRAW Alternatives for Vector Design, Print and Layout: Free and Paid Options Compared

CorelDRAW is still a favourite with sign makers, print shops, apparel and embroidery businesses and small marketing teams. But it is no longer cheap, and the market around it has changed a lot: the old one-time Affinity Designer is gone and its successor is now free, Gravit Designer has disappeared into CorelDRAW's own product range, and several smaller vector editors still sell lifetime licences. So if you are paying for CorelDRAW, inheriting a folder of .cdr files or choosing your first professional design tool, the options in 2027 look very different from a few years ago.
For this comparison we checked every tool on its official website in October 2026: how you pay (free, subscription or one-time purchase), which systems it runs on, and whether it can open CorelDRAW files. Prices are the ones shown on each official page when we checked, mostly in euros; they vary by country and change with promotions. If you only want tools that cost nothing, see our separate list of free CorelDRAW alternatives.
Quick answer: the best overall CorelDRAW alternative is Affinity, now a free all-in-one vector, photo and layout app for Windows and Mac; the industry-standard paid option is Adobe Illustrator (subscription only); the closest Windows all-rounder to CorelDRAW is Xara Designer Pro+; if you hate subscriptions, VectorStyler sells a one-time licence for Windows and Mac; and to open old .cdr files for free, use Inkscape.

CorelDRAW in 2027: What It Costs Now and What Changed

Before you switch, it helps to know what you are comparing against. The CorelDRAW Graphics Suite is now in its 2026 version, sold as professional graphic design software for Windows, Mac and the web. When we checked the official page on 29 October 2026 (Dutch store, prices including VAT), it showed:
  • Annual plan: €369 a year, shown at €275 for the first year in a 25% flash sale. A monthly plan costs €49.95 a month.
  • One-time purchase of the 2026 version: €779, shown at €584 in the same sale. You own that version, but new features go to subscribers.
  • What subscribers get extra: CorelDRAW Web (the browser version) is a subscriber exclusive, and subscribers get 2,000 AI credits a month; the one-time licence comes with 2,000 credits once.
  • What's new: a September 2026 update added Text-to-vector AI, an improved PowerTRACE with AI background removal, and DWG and DXF export in CorelDRAW Web.
  • Cheaper Corel options: CorelDRAW Standard, CorelDRAW Essentials and the browser-based CorelDRAW Go (€9.99 a month or €115 a year, with 1,000 AI credits a month). All offer a 15-day free trial.
So CorelDRAW now has both a subscription and a one-time licence, but the one-time licence costs more than two years of the subscription list price, and the newest features are aimed at subscribers. That is the main reason people look elsewhere.

The 9 Best CorelDRAW Alternatives in 2027

1. Affinity by Canva: the best overall CorelDRAW alternative

Affinity used to be three paid apps, and the old version of this article recommended Affinity Designer as a roughly $70 one-time purchase. That product is gone: the old Affinity Designer address now redirects to the new Affinity site, where Canva offers one app that combines vector design, photo editing and page layout. It costs $0: you sign in with a Canva account (a free one is enough) to download it, and the vector, pixel and layout tools, customisation and export are all free. Only the Canva AI tools inside Affinity, such as generative fill and background removal, need a Canva premium plan. It runs on Windows and macOS, and an iPad version is announced as coming soon.
For CorelDRAW users, that one-app approach is the closest match to the Graphics Suite: draw a logo, retouch a photo and lay out a brochure in the same document. Affinity imports PSD, AI, PDF, SVG and IDML files, but it does not list CDR, so export your CorelDRAW work to PDF first. One caution: the older Affinity V1 and V2 apps cannot open files saved in the new app. We cover Affinity's photo side in our list of open-source Affinity Photo alternatives.

2. Adobe Illustrator: the industry standard, subscription only

Adobe Illustrator is the vector editor most agencies, printers and freelancers expect files from. If you work with clients who send .ai files, it is the safest choice. It is only available by subscription: the Illustrator single-app plan was €26.43 a month including VAT on an annual plan billed monthly when we checked, with a 7-day free trial. In return you get Adobe's generative AI built in, including Text to Vector Graphic and Text to Pattern (powered by Adobe Firefly), plus Illustrator on iPad. Compared with CorelDRAW, you lose the one-time purchase option and the built-in photo editor (Photoshop is a separate subscription). Looking for the reverse? See our guides to free Adobe Illustrator alternatives and open-source Illustrator alternatives.

3. Inkscape: the free, open-source editor that opens old CDR files

Inkscape is a free, open-source vector editor for Windows, macOS and Linux, and the only tool on this list that can import CorelDRAW files. Its import filter, built on the libcdr library, is labelled for files from CorelDRAW 7 to X4, so it works best with older artwork; newer files may not open. Version 1.4.4 was tagged in Inkscape's official repository in May 2026. It is a good fit for logos, signs and cutting files. Two more free, open-source tools also read older CDR files: Scribus for print layouts and LibreOffice Draw for quick conversions. We cover all three in our free CorelDRAW alternatives guide, and more open-source picks in our list of open-source CorelDRAW alternatives and open-source Inkscape alternatives.

4. Xara Designer Pro+: the closest Windows all-rounder to CorelDRAW

Xara Designer Pro+ is the Windows program that feels most like CorelDRAW's "one suite for everything" idea. Version 25.1 combines vector illustration, desktop publishing and page layout, photo editing, a no-code website builder and a full PDF editor, and it imports Adobe files. Its product data lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 (64-bit); there is no Mac version. Xara's buy page showed €16 a month billed yearly as one payment of €192 (plus VAT where applicable) when we checked, with a free 14-day trial. If you do not want a subscription, Xara still sells the older Designer Pro V20 as a separate purchase. Choose it if you make flyers, brochures, PDFs and simple websites on Windows and want them all in one program.

5. VectorStyler: a one-time licence for Windows and Mac

VectorStyler is an advanced vector illustration app from the small Finnish developer NumericPath. Its selling point is right on the homepage: no subscription. A commercial licence costs USD 95 as a one-time payment, covers both macOS and Windows, and includes free upgrades; educational licences are free, and the full-featured trial runs for 42 days. It imports and exports AI, PDF, SVG, DWG, DXF and PSD files, and version 1.3 added repeaters, vector halftones and new curve tools; build 1.3.031 came out on 15 October 2026. CDR is not on its list of formats, so export to PDF or SVG from CorelDRAW first. It is the best pick for an illustrator who wants serious vector tools and wants to pay once.

6. Canva: fast marketing designs from templates

Canva is not a precision vector editor, but many CorelDRAW users only need flyers, social posts, business cards and posters, and Canva gets you there fastest. The free plan costs nothing; Canva Pro was €110 a year for one person and Canva Business €170 a year per person on Canva's pricing page when we checked, and both have a free trial. It runs in the browser, on desktop and on mobile, and lets you download print PDFs with crop marks and bleed. It cannot open .cdr files. Owning a Canva account now also unlocks the free Affinity app above, so the two make a good pair. If you like Canva but not the price, see our free Canva Pro alternatives.

7. Figma with Figma Draw: vector design for teams

Figma is best known for app and website design, but its Figma Draw illustration tools make it a real option for vector work: vector brushes, variable-width strokes, text on a path, pattern repeats, and turning images into editable vectors with a lasso and colour reduction. It runs in the browser and as a desktop app, and everything is collaborative by default. The Starter plan is free with limited access; on Figma's pricing page, the Professional plan's Full seat, which includes Figma Draw, was €16 a month. Choose it if your design work is mostly screens, pitch decks and brand assets shared with a team, not print production. For self-hosted options, see our open-source Figma alternatives.

8. Sketch: Mac design with a one-time licence option

Sketch is a native Mac app for UI and vector design. Unlike most rivals, it still lets you choose: the Standard subscription was €11 per editor a month billed yearly (it adds real-time collaboration, a web app and an iPhone and iPad viewer), or you can buy a Mac-only licence for €108 once, which includes one year of updates and works offline without the collaboration features. Every option starts with a 30-day free trial, no credit card needed. Sketch is aimed at interface design more than print, so it suits founders designing apps and websites on a Mac.

9. Linearity Curve: vector illustration on Mac and iPad

Linearity Curve (formerly Vectornator) is a vector design app for Mac, iPad and iPhone with CMYK support and PDF, SVG and EPS export. The free plan gives access to Curve and the animation app Move with usage limits; Pro costs €10 a month, or €8 a month billed yearly, including VAT, and removes the limits. It is a good choice if you sketch and illustrate on an iPad and finish on a Mac; Windows users should look at Affinity, Xara or VectorStyler instead.

CorelDRAW Alternatives That Are Gone or Have Changed

The 2025 version of this article listed several tools that no longer fit:
  • Gravit Designer: discontinued. Its old website, designer.io, now redirects to CorelDRAW Go, Corel's paid browser app.
  • Affinity Designer (one-time purchase): replaced by the free Affinity by Canva app. Existing V2 licences keep working, but the new app is where development continues.
  • Autodesk Sketchbook: now made by Sketchbook, Inc., and it is a painting app, not a CorelDRAW replacement. See our free Photoshop alternatives for painting and photo tools.
  • GIMP and Krita: excellent and free, but they are raster editors, not vector tools. They replace Corel PHOTO-PAINT rather than CorelDRAW, so we moved them to our free CorelDRAW and Photoshop lists.
  • Old prices: the dated prices in the earlier version (Illustrator, Canva, Figma, Sketch) have all been replaced with prices checked on the official pages in October 2026.

Which CorelDRAW Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You want the most for nothing: Affinity by Canva, on Windows or Mac.
  • Your clients and printers expect Adobe files: Adobe Illustrator.
  • You work on Windows and want one program for print, layout, PDFs and websites: Xara Designer Pro+.
  • You refuse subscriptions: VectorStyler (one-time, Windows and Mac), Sketch's Mac-only licence, or CorelDRAW's own one-time purchase.
  • You have old .cdr files and no CorelDRAW licence: Inkscape, then Scribus or LibreOffice Draw.
  • You need quick social posts and flyers: Canva.
  • You design apps and brand assets with a team: Figma with Figma Draw.
  • You draw on an iPad: Linearity Curve.
  • You rely on CorelDRAW-only features, such as sign-making plug-ins or PowerTRACE: stay on CorelDRAW, or try CorelDRAW Go or Standard for less.
Moving away? Export your important CorelDRAW files to PDF and SVG while you still have access; every tool above reads at least one of those formats. Check fonts and colours after import, and ask your print shop for a proof before a big run.

How Founders Use Design Tools Without a Design Team

Most early-stage founders do their own design for a while: a logo, a flyer for a market stall, social posts, a pitch-deck graphic, packaging for a first batch. Start free (Affinity, Canva, Inkscape) and only pay when a client, a printer or a team workflow demands it. Our top design tools for startups list helps you build the rest of the stack, and the Canva logo guide shows how to make a simple logo in minutes. If you want to sell designs, print-on-demand lets you start without stock. Before you spend on printing, test demand with a cheap landing page; our 30-day validation sprint walks you through it.
