Open-Source Buffer Alternatives (2027): 6 Self-Hosted Social Media Schedulers With Verified Licences

Open-Source Buffer Alternatives You Can Self-Host

Buffer is simple and popular, but you pay per channel, your content sits on someone else's servers, and you cannot change how the tool works. An open-source scheduler fixes all three: you run it on your own server, connect as many accounts as you like and keep your data. The catch is that many lists of "open-source Buffer alternatives", including the 2025 version of this article, are full of tools that are not open source at all. We checked the licence, the latest release and the features of every tool below on its official website and code repository in October 2026.
Quick answer: the best open-source Buffer alternative is Postiz (AGPL-3.0, 30+ networks). TryPost is a newer AGPL-3.0 scheduler for 13 networks, and Mixpost Lite (MIT) is the simplest to run but covers only Facebook Pages, X and Mastodon. Developers can post from scripts with Crosspost, no-code teams can build posting flows in Activepieces, and WordPress sites can reshare posts with Revive Social.

The Best Open-Source Buffer Alternatives in 2027

1. Postiz: the most complete open-source Buffer alternative

Postiz is the closest open-source match to Buffer: one calendar, one post, many channels. Its homepage says it publishes to more than 30 social networks, including Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Reddit, TikTok, Facebook, Pinterest, Threads, X, Mastodon and Bluesky, and it adds team collaboration, comments, analytics and an AI assistant. For developers there is a public API, webhooks, an n8n node and an MCP server, so AI agents such as Claude or ChatGPT can draft and schedule posts.
  • Licence: AGPL-3.0, actively developed; version 2.25.3 was released on 24 October 2026.
  • Self-hosting: deploy with Docker, Coolify, Railway or any VPS. You configure PostgreSQL, Redis, storage and environment variables yourself, and team members are unlimited.
  • AI features when self-hosted: available if you bring your own OpenAI (or other provider) API key; you pay the provider directly.
  • Hosted cloud: from $29 a month ($23 billed yearly) for 5 channels up to $99 ($79) for 100 channels, all with unlimited posts and a 7-day free trial.

2. Mixpost Lite: the simplest self-hosted scheduler (MIT)

Mixpost is a self-hosted social media manager built on Laravel. Its free Lite edition is MIT-licensed on GitHub (version 2.6.0, March 2026) and includes a calendar, media library, post versions, labels and basic analytics. You can install it with Docker, as a regular PHP app, or inside an existing Laravel application.
The limit is reach: Lite supports only Facebook Pages, X and Mastodon. The other networks (Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, Pinterest, Threads, Bluesky, Pixelfed and Google Business Profile), workspaces, approvals, the API and the AI assistant are in Mixpost Pro, a one-time $299 licence, or Enterprise at $1,199. Those paid editions are source-available, not open source: you may not resell or redistribute the code.

3. TryPost: a newer AGPL scheduler built for AI agents

TryPost is an open-source (AGPL-3.0) scheduler for 13 networks: Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, YouTube, Facebook, Threads, Bluesky, Pinterest, Mastodon, Google Business, Telegram and Discord. It has a calendar with queues, approvals, workspaces and a REST API, plus an MCP server with more than 80 tools so an AI agent can plan and schedule a week of posts. Its repository says the self-hosted version has every feature of the cloud version, which costs $19 a month with unlimited social accounts and team members. Version 2.0.0 came out in October 2026; it is younger than Postiz, so test it before you rely on it.

4. Crosspost: post to many networks from code

Crosspost by Nicholas C. Zakas is an Apache-2.0 JavaScript library and command-line tool that sends one message to Bluesky, Mastodon, X, LinkedIn, Discord, Telegram, Dev.to and Nostr at once. You run it with npx, call it from your own code, or start it as an MCP server for AI agents. It has no calendar or interface and posts immediately, so for scheduling you run it from a cron job or a CI workflow. It suits developer founders who announce releases or blog posts automatically.

5. Activepieces: build your own posting workflows

Activepieces is an open-source automation platform in the style of Zapier, with 772 integrations ("pieces"). Its social pieces include LinkedIn, X, Facebook Pages, Instagram for Business, Bluesky, Mastodon, Pinterest and YouTube, so you can build flows such as "new blog post in the RSS feed β†’ post to LinkedIn and Bluesky" or "new row in a sheet β†’ publish at the planned time". The code is MIT-licensed outside its enterprise folders, you can self-host it, and the cloud has a free plan. It is not a visual content calendar, but it automates repetitive posting well.

6. Revive Social: automatic sharing for WordPress blogs

Revive Social is a WordPress plugin whose code is GPL-2.0 on GitHub; version 9.4.4 came out in October 2026. The free version shares new and old blog posts to Facebook Pages and X automatically, with a set number of hours between shares. Instagram, LinkedIn, Mastodon, Bluesky, Telegram and other networks, plus custom days and times, need the paid Pro version. It is a good fit if your social media is mostly promoting your blog.

Buffer Alternatives That Are Not Open Source or No Longer Maintained

The older version of this list mixed open-source projects with commercial services. Here is what changed after we checked each one:
  • SocialBu, SocialBee, Sendible, Pallyy, Metricool and Hootsuite: commercial hosted services, not open source. They are covered in our lists of free Buffer alternatives and Buffer alternatives.
  • Odoo: Odoo Community is open source, but its edition comparison lists the Social Marketing app as Enterprise only.
  • Laudspeaker: a customer messaging tool (email, SMS, push), not a social media scheduler; its last release, v1.7.0, dates from June 2024.
  • Shoutify: an open-source scheduler whose repository was archived; the last change was in January 2023.
  • Socioboard: GPL-3.0, but the last release (4.1.0) dates from November 2019, and recent commits are only dependency and security updates. Not a safe choice for a new setup.
  • n8n: a popular automation tool for social posting, but it uses the Sustainable Use License ("fair-code"), not an open-source licence. Activepieces is the open-source option.
  • Mixpost Pro and Enterprise: paid and source-available; only Mixpost Lite is open source.

How to Self-Host a Social Media Scheduler

  1. Pick the tool. Postiz for the most networks, TryPost for an agent-first scheduler, Mixpost Lite if Facebook Pages, X and Mastodon are enough.
  2. Rent a small server. A VPS with Docker installed is enough to start; Postiz also lists Coolify and Railway as deployment options.
  3. Deploy with Docker. Follow the project's own Docker guide, point a domain at the server and turn on HTTPS.
  4. Connect your networks. On a self-hosted install you usually create a developer app on each network (Meta, LinkedIn, X and so on) and paste its keys into the settings. This is the step that takes the longest.
  5. Schedule, back up and update. Fill your calendar, back up the database regularly and install updates: social networks change their APIs often.
Not technical? The hosted versions of Postiz and TryPost run the same open-source code without the server work, and you can move to self-hosting later.

Which Open-Source Buffer Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You want a real Buffer replacement: Postiz. It has the most networks, team features and an active release cycle.
  • You want AI agents to plan and schedule posts: Postiz or TryPost, both with MCP servers.
  • You only post to Facebook Pages, X and Mastodon: Mixpost Lite, the lightest MIT-licensed option.
  • You are a developer who announces releases: Crosspost from a script or CI job.
  • You want posting to happen automatically from other tools: Activepieces flows.
  • Your social media is mostly blog promotion: Revive Social on WordPress.

How Founders Use a Self-Hosted Scheduler

A scheduler is only as good as the plan behind it. Most founders batch a week or a month of posts in one sitting, using a simple social media content calendar, and then let the tool publish. Social posts work best when they point to content that ranks. Then schedule those articles across your channels.

FAQ About Open-Source Buffer Alternatives

What is the best open-source alternative to Buffer?

Postiz. It is AGPL-3.0 licensed, publishes to more than 30 networks, includes team features, analytics and an API, and can be self-hosted with Docker or used as a hosted service.

Is there a free, self-hosted Buffer alternative?

Yes. Postiz, TryPost and Mixpost Lite are free to self-host; you only pay for your own server. Mixpost Lite supports Facebook Pages, X and Mastodon, while Postiz and TryPost cover many more networks.

Is Mixpost free and open source?

Mixpost Lite is free and MIT-licensed. Mixpost Pro ($299 one-time) and Enterprise ($1,199) are paid, source-available licences that add more networks, workspaces, approvals and the API.

Which open-source scheduler supports Instagram and LinkedIn?

Postiz and TryPost both support Instagram and LinkedIn in their open-source versions. Mixpost Lite does not; those networks need Mixpost Pro.

Is Odoo a free social media scheduler?

No. Odoo Community is open source, but Odoo's edition comparison lists the Social Marketing app as available only in Odoo Enterprise.

Is Socioboard still maintained?

Not actively. Its last release, 4.1.0, dates from November 2019, and recent commits are only dependency and security updates.

Is n8n open source?

n8n's code is public, but it uses the Sustainable Use License, which is not an open-source licence. Activepieces, whose core is MIT-licensed, is the open-source alternative.

Do I need developer accounts to self-host a social media scheduler?

Usually yes. A self-hosted scheduler connects to each network through your own developer app, so you create apps on networks such as Meta, LinkedIn or X and add their keys. On the hosted versions you usually just sign in to each network.

Can AI agents schedule posts in these tools?

Yes. Postiz and TryPost include MCP servers, and Crosspost can run as an MCP server, so assistants such as Claude or ChatGPT can draft and publish posts through them.
