Open-Source ChatGPT Alternatives (2027): Self-Hosted Chat Apps and Open-Weight Models for Founders

Open-Source ChatGPT Alternatives for Founders: Self-Hosted Chat Apps and Open-Weight Models You Can Run Yourself

ChatGPT is two things at once: a polished chat app and the OpenAI models behind it. An open-source alternative has to replace both. For the app, there are chat interfaces you can install on your laptop or host for your team; for the brain, there are open-weight models that you download and run on your own hardware or rent from any provider. Put the two together and you get a private ChatGPT where your prompts, files and customer data stay under your control. We checked every app and model below on its official website, GitHub repository or Hugging Face model card on 2 November 2026: the licence, the latest release and what it really does. Items from the old version of this list that are abandoned, renamed or a different kind of tool are listed separately near the end.
Quick answer: for a private ChatGPT on your own computer, install Jan or AnythingLLM (AnythingLLM if you mostly chat with your documents). For a shared ChatGPT for your whole team, host LibreChat. To try many open models in the browser first, use HuggingChat. Under the hood, Ollama runs the models, and the best open models to start with are gpt-oss-20b, Qwen3.8-27B, Gemma 4 or Mistral's Ministral 3, all under the Apache 2.0 licence. Keep in mind that most popular models are open-weight rather than open source in the strict sense, and that Llama 4 comes with Meta's own licence terms.

What ChatGPT Costs in 2027, and Why Founders Look for an Open Alternative

On the ChatGPT pricing page (default view, shown in euros from the Netherlands on 2 November 2026), the Free plan costs €0 and promises unlimited text chats with GPT-6, subject to abuse guardrails, with limited uploads, image creation, voice chats and deep research. Go costs €8 a month and may include ads, Plus costs €23 a month and adds advanced reasoning, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs, and Pro starts at €103 a month. Prices in other countries and currencies differ. So money is rarely the main reason to switch. Founders choose open-source alternatives for three other reasons: data control (customer data, contracts or code never leave your servers), no lock-in (you can swap models without changing tools) and the right to build the model into your own product.

Open Source or Open Weight? What the Labels Mean

Chat apps such as LibreChat, Jan and AnythingLLM are open source in the usual sense: their code is public under licences like MIT or Apache 2.0, which let you use, change and resell them. Models are different. Most companies publish only the trained weights, not the training data, so the correct word is open-weight. Some of those weights come under a standard licence (Apache 2.0 or MIT), while others, like Llama 4, use the company's own terms with extra conditions. Only a few projects, such as Ai2's Olmo, also publish the data and training code. We use these labels carefully below.

Open-Source Chat Apps That Replace the ChatGPT Interface

1. LibreChat: a self-hosted ChatGPT for your whole team

LibreChat looks and feels like ChatGPT, but you host it and choose the models. It connects to OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure and AWS models as well as local models, so one team can use several providers in one place. Its feature list covers agents with file handling and API actions, a code interpreter, artifacts (React, HTML and Mermaid diagrams in the chat), MCP tools, memory, web search and enterprise sign-in with OAuth, SAML, LDAP and two-factor authentication. The LibreChat repository is MIT-licensed, has around 46,600 stars, and version 0.8.8 came out on 1 October 2026, with 0.8.9 in release-candidate testing. The homepage also announces that LibreChat is joining ClickHouse. Choose it when several people need a shared, logged-in ChatGPT and someone can run a Docker server.

2. AnythingLLM: a private ChatGPT for your documents

AnythingLLM describes itself as a private AI assistant that runs entirely on your computer, with no accounts, no API keys and no token limits. It has a built-in engine that runs local models on your CPU or GPU, turns your PDFs and documents into a knowledge base that answers with source citations, and adds agents, MCP tools, scheduled tasks and an on-device meeting assistant. You can also connect cloud models when you need a stronger one. The desktop app is for one person; the Docker version adds multiple users with permissions and an embeddable chat widget for your website. The AnythingLLM code is MIT-licensed, and version 1.19.0 came out on 26 October 2026.

3. Jan: the open-source ChatGPT desktop app

Jan calls itself an open-source ChatGPT replacement, and it is the closest match to the ChatGPT desktop app. You download open models such as Llama, Gemma, Qwen or gpt-oss from Hugging Face and chat with them offline, or plug in OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral or Groq when you want a cloud model. It supports custom assistants, MCP tools and a local OpenAI-compatible API (on localhost:1337) that other apps can use. The Jan repository is under the Apache 2.0 licence, version 0.8.8 came out on 28 October 2026, and the homepage counts more than 7.2 million downloads. Choose Jan if you want ChatGPT on your own laptop with as little setup as possible.

4. HuggingChat: try open models in the browser

HuggingChat is Hugging Face's chat app powered by open-source models. Its Omni option picks a model for each request, or you choose one yourself from the list (135 models when we checked). It is the quickest way to compare open models before you install anything. Chats run on Hugging Face's inference providers, so heavier use draws on inference credits; the Hugging Face PRO account costs $9 a month and includes $2 of inference credits monthly. The app's code, Chat UI, is Apache 2.0, with version 0.10.0 from May 2026 and new commits in November 2026. You can host it yourself and point it at any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, such as a llama.cpp server, Ollama or OpenRouter.

5. Ollama: the engine that runs open models

Ollama is not a ChatGPT look-alike but the piece that makes most of them work: it downloads and runs open models on macOS, Windows, Linux or Docker, and serves them to chat apps, coding tools and your own code. Its homepage says it is the most popular way to build with open models and that your prompts are never stored or trained on, whether you run models locally or use its cloud. The Ollama repository is MIT-licensed, with around 185,700 stars, and version 0.40.13 came out on 28 October 2026. Pair it with LibreChat or another chat app, and you have a fully local ChatGPT. Ollama itself builds on llama.cpp, the MIT-licensed inference engine that also powers many other local AI apps.

Open-Weight Models That Power a Private ChatGPT

The app decides how your ChatGPT alternative feels; the model decides how smart it is. These are the main open-weight model families in November 2026, with the licence each one uses.

6. gpt-oss: OpenAI's own open-weight models

OpenAI released gpt-oss-20b and gpt-oss-120b in August 2025 under the Apache 2.0 licence, which allows commercial use and changes without copyleft. According to the model card, gpt-oss-120b (117 billion parameters, 5.1 billion active) fits on a single 80 GB GPU, while gpt-oss-20b (21 billion parameters, 3.6 billion active) runs within 16 GB of memory. That makes the 20b model the easiest way to get a ChatGPT-style reasoning model on a well-equipped laptop through Ollama, Jan or AnythingLLM.

7. Qwen3.8: Apache 2.0 models from Alibaba

The Qwen3.8-27B model card lists the Apache 2.0 licence, 27 billion parameters and a native context of 262,144 tokens, with a thinking mode that is on by default and can be switched off per request. It also reads images. The much larger Qwen3.8-2.4T flagship uses a separate Qwen licence, so read it before you build on that one. For most startups, the 27B model on one strong GPU is the practical choice.

8. Mistral Small 4 and Ministral 3: the European option

Mistral Small 4 is Apache 2.0, has 119 billion parameters with 6.5 billion active per token and a 256k context, and combines Mistral's instruction, reasoning (formerly Magistral) and coding (Devstral) models in one. For laptops, the Ministral 3 family comes in 3B, 8B and 14B sizes, also under Apache 2.0. Mistral's biggest model, Large 4, is open-weight under the Mistral Ecosystem Open-Weight License, a modified MIT licence: you can use it commercially, but running a model-as-a-service business on it needs a separate licence.

9. Gemma 4: small Google models under Apache 2.0

Google DeepMind's Gemma 4 models now come under the Apache 2.0 licence. The family includes E2B and E4B models built for on-device use, 12B and 31B models and a mixture-of-experts model with 25.2 billion parameters, 3.8 billion of them active. They read text and images (the small models and 12B also take audio), with a 128K context on the small models and 256K on the medium ones. Gemma 4 is a good fit when you need a ChatGPT-style assistant on modest hardware.

10. DeepSeek V4.1: MIT-licensed, but data-centre sized

DeepSeek publishes its V4 models under the MIT licence. The DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash model card describes a multimodal mixture-of-experts model with 552 billion backbone parameters and a context of up to one million tokens. The licence is as open as it gets, but the size means you would run it on rented GPU servers or through a hosting provider, not on a laptop. If you use DeepSeek's own hosted app or API instead, the open licence does not change where your data goes, so read that service's privacy terms.

11. Llama 4 and Muse Spark Open: open-weight with Meta's own terms

Meta's Llama 4 Scout and Maverick models are open-weight, but the Llama 4 Community License (effective 5 April 2025) is not a standard open-source licence. You must show "Built with Llama", start the name of any model you train with Llama outputs with "Llama", follow Meta's acceptable use policy, and ask Meta for a licence if your products had more than 700 million monthly active users. The downloads are gated on Hugging Face. Meta's developer site now promotes Muse Spark Open, which Meta calls the most capable open-weight model from a US lab; it has 816 billion parameters, a gated download and its own Muse model licence.

12. Olmo 3.1: the fully open choice

If open source matters to you as a principle, look at Ai2's Olmo 3.1. The 7B and 32B models are Apache 2.0, and Ai2 also releases the code, checkpoints and training details, with pre-training on its Dolma 3 data set and post-training on its Dolci data sets. The model card says the models are intended for research and educational use under Ai2's Responsible Use Guidelines. Olmo is less polished as a daily assistant than gpt-oss or Qwen, but it is the closest thing to a truly open-source ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Alternatives From the Old List: Discontinued, Changed or a Different Kind of Tool

The 2025 version of this article listed ten tools. Here is what happened to them, plus two popular chat apps we left out on purpose:
  • Llama 3.1: replaced by Llama 4 (see above).
  • BERT: an older Google language model that understands text but does not chat, so it is not a ChatGPT alternative.
  • Falcon 180B: TII has moved on to newer, smaller Falcon models under its own Falcon licence; the 180B model is no longer a sensible starting point.
  • Pulze.ai AI Chatbot: the open-source repository has not changed since January 2025, and Pulze now sells a paid no-code AI workspace (Pulze One at $39 a month).
  • Rasa: its README says Rasa Open Source is in maintenance mode (last release 3.6.21, January 2025); the company now points developers to Hello Rasa and CALM.
  • DeepPavlov: the last release, 1.7.0, came out in August 2024 and the repository has had no commits since August 2025, so we treat it as inactive.
  • Dify: actively developed (v1.18.0 on 23 October 2026), but it is an AI app builder, and its licence is a modified Apache 2.0 that forbids running a multi-tenant service or removing its logo without permission.
  • LangChain: an MIT-licensed developer framework for building AI apps, not a chat app; developers building on gpt-oss or Qwen still use it.
  • Vercel AI Chatbot: the template now lives at vercel/chatbot (Apache 2.0). It is a starting point for developers, and its last tagged release is from July 2025.
  • Open WebUI: a very popular chat interface (v0.12.5, 29 October 2026), but its Open WebUI License forbids changing its branding in deployments with more than 50 users in 30 days without permission, so it is not open source by the usual definition. Small teams can still use it; read the licence first.
  • LobeHub (LobeChat): its LobeHub Community License allows commercial use without changes to the code, but a derivative work needs a commercial licence, so we left it out too.

Which Open-Source ChatGPT Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You want ChatGPT on your laptop, offline: Jan with gpt-oss-20b, Gemma 4 or a Ministral 3 model.
  • You mostly ask questions about your own files: AnythingLLM, with its built-in engine and source citations.
  • Your whole team needs a shared ChatGPT with logins: LibreChat on a Docker server, connected to Ollama and to one cloud provider for hard tasks.
  • You want to compare open models before installing anything: HuggingChat.
  • You are building AI into your own product: Ollama or llama.cpp with an Apache 2.0 or MIT model (gpt-oss, Qwen3.8-27B, Mistral Small 4, Gemma 4, DeepSeek).
  • You need a model with open data for research or compliance: Olmo 3.1.
  • You need the very best answers and have no sensitive data: paid ChatGPT or another frontier model may still be the better tool; many founders use both.

How Founders Use an Open-Source ChatGPT Alternative

Start small: install Jan or AnythingLLM, download one model and use it for a week for the tasks you already give ChatGPT, such as summarising calls, drafting emails or answering questions about a contract. If you write a lot, our open-source GrammarlyGO alternatives show how to bring the same local models into your editor, and the open-source Notion AI alternatives and open-source Coda AI alternatives cover AI inside your notes and docs. Developers on your team can point coding tools at the same models with our open-source GitHub Copilot alternatives.
Then connect the model to your work. Our list of AI agents for startup founders and the open-source Zapier alternatives show how to automate the repetitive parts. Remember that your customers still search in ChatGPT itself: read how to use ChatGPT for SEO and how to get cited by ChatGPT, and use the F/MS AI SEO Tool so your startup shows up in AI answers. Keep a person checking important outputs: open models, like ChatGPT, can be confidently wrong.
