Open-Source Intercom Alternatives for Live Chat, Shared Inbox and AI Support You Host Yourself
Intercom is a strong customer messaging platform, but you pay per seat and again for every conversation its AI agent, Fin, resolves. If you want to own your customer conversations, keep the data on your own server and stop paying per seat, an open-source alternative is worth a look. We checked every tool below on its official website and GitHub in October 2026: the exact licence (open source or only source-available), the latest release, whether it has a website chat widget, and which AI features really exist. Projects that are abandoned or are not open source are listed separately at the end.
Quick answer: for the closest open-source match to Intercom, use Chatwoot; for a lightweight, fully free inbox with a built-in AI assistant, use Libredesk; for AI agents and chatbots on top of live chat, use Tiledesk; for a simple PHP live chat that works with ChatGPT, Ollama or Gemini, use Live Helper Chat; and if you also need tickets and a knowledge base, use Zammad.

The Best Open-Source Intercom Alternatives in 2027
1. Chatwoot: the closest open-source match to Intercom
Chatwoot describes itself as an open-source alternative to Intercom and Zendesk, and it is the most complete one: website live chat with a widget you can brand, email, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, voice through Twilio, a help centre and an API in one inbox. Its core code is MIT-licensed, while the enterprise folder has its own licence. Captain, its AI agent, learns from your help centre, PDFs and website, answers routine questions and hands off to a person; Copilot drafts replies for your agents. The catch: Captain is only included on paid plans. Self-hosted, the Community Edition is free and Premium Support with Captain is $19 per agent per month. In the cloud, the free Hacker plan covers 2 agents and 500 conversations a month without AI; Startups costs $19 per agent per month with 300 Captain credits. Version 4.19.1 was released in October 2026.
2. Libredesk: free live chat, email and WhatsApp with built-in AI
Libredesk is a newer open-source support desk (AGPL-3.0) that runs as a single binary with Postgres and Redis. It puts email, a website live chat widget and WhatsApp (through the Meta Cloud API) into one shared inbox, with teams, tags, a multilingual help centre, APIs and webhooks. Its AI assistant answers live chat questions from your knowledge base and hands over to an agent when it cannot help, and an agent copilot drafts replies and summarises conversations. Its website says every feature is included and there are no paid tiers; there is also no official cloud version. Version 2.9.0 came out in October 2026.
3. Tiledesk: live chat with AI agents and chatbots
Tiledesk combines live chat with a no-code chatbot designer, so AI and humans work side by side. The open-source Tiledesk project is MIT-licensed and installs with Docker Compose for trials or Kubernetes with Helm for production; some Enterprise-only Docker images need credentials. It covers web, Android and iOS chat, and bot replies adapt to WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Telegram. On its cloud plans, Tiledesk lists AI agents, a knowledge base the AI answers from, AI Copilot, MCP tools and the option to bring your own AI; Pro costs €149 a month (€124 billed yearly) after a 14-day trial. Release 1.2.1 came out in October 2026.
4. erxes: an inbox, CRM and marketing platform in one
erxes positions itself as an open-source alternative to HubSpot rather than a pure chat tool, but its Frontline module is a unified inbox for messenger, web chat, email, WhatsApp, Instagram and calls, with SLAs, routing, canned replies and AI draft suggestions. Its AI agents can triage and draft, and erxes says they work with OpenAI, Anthropic or self-hosted models. The Community edition is free and self-hosted. Read the licence carefully: code outside the enterprise plugins is AGPLv3, but erxes adds a clause that you may not host it as a SaaS that competes with erxes Inc. Version 3.4.1 was released in October 2026.
5. Zammad: chat plus tickets, with AI you control
Zammad is an AGPL-3.0 help desk that includes a website chat next to email, phone, social channels and a knowledge base. Its AI features are a writing assistant that rewrites, shortens and translates replies, AI ticket summaries for long threads, and AI agents that run from triggers, schedulers or macros. Self-hosting is free; in the cloud, chat starts on the Professional plan at €16 per agent per month (billed yearly), and AI calls cost €0.03 each. Choose it if your support is more ticket-based than chat-based. Version 7.2.2 came out in October 2026.

6. Rocket.Chat Omnichannel: if your team already uses Rocket.Chat
Rocket.Chat is best known as team chat, but its Omnichannel features add a Livechat widget for your website, WhatsApp, SMS and Telegram through apps, departments, canned responses, SLAs and monitoring. A Rocket.Chat AI app can summarise conversations, but it needs your own LLM deployment. The Community edition is MIT-licensed outside its enterprise folders and supports up to 100 concurrent users. Version 8.9.0 (long-term support) was released in October 2026.
7. Live Helper Chat: simple PHP live chat that works with any AI
Live Helper Chat is an Apache-2.0 live support chat for websites with a bot, voice, video and screen sharing. It needs only PHP and MySQL, so it runs on ordinary hosting, and it connects to Telegram, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and SMS. Its bot can use ChatGPT, Rasa, DeepPavlov, Ollama or Gemini, or any REST API without coding. You can self-host it for free or pay the team to host it. Version 4.97 came out in October 2026.
8. FreeScout: an email-first shared inbox with a free AI module
FreeScout is a lightweight AGPL-3.0 help desk and shared mailbox built with PHP and Laravel. It is closer to Help Scout than to Intercom: email comes first, and live chat, WhatsApp, Telegram and other channels are added as modules. Its AI Integration module is free and drafts replies and summarises conversations with OpenAI, Claude, Gemini or local models. It is the cheapest option to run, and version 1.8.248 came out in October 2026.
9. Typebot: chatbots and lead capture (source-available)
Typebot is not a support inbox but a chatbot builder you embed on your website or connect to WhatsApp, often used to replace Intercom's bots and lead forms. It is source-available, not open source: the self-hosting documentation says the Functional Source License lets you use it in your own products but not resell access or offer Typebot hosting, and each version becomes Apache 2.0 after two years. Its OpenAI block can create chat replies, transcribe audio and generate variables. In the cloud, the free plan includes 200 chats a month; Starter is $39 a month. Version 3.19.1 was released in October 2026.
Intercom Alternatives That Are Discontinued, Not Open Source or Not a Fit
The 2025 version of this article included tools that no longer belong on an open-source Intercom shortlist:
- Papercups: its GitHub README says the project is in maintenance mode, the last code change dates from May 2022 and the papercups.io website no longer loads. Use Chatwoot or Libredesk instead.
- Chaskiq: its licence includes the Commons Clause, which forbids selling the software, so it is source-available rather than open source, and its last tagged release is from November 2023.
- Mattermost: a good open-source team chat, but it is built for internal communication and has no customer-facing chat widget, so it does not replace Intercom.
- osTicket, UVdesk and Hesk: ticketing help desks without a live chat inbox, and Hesk is free but not open source. We compare them in our open-source Freshdesk alternatives.
Which Open-Source Intercom Alternative Should You Choose?
- You want the closest Intercom replacement: Chatwoot, self-hosted for free or on its free cloud plan for two agents.
- You want AI answers without paying per seat or per resolution: Libredesk (AI included), Live Helper Chat with Ollama or ChatGPT, or Zammad with your own model.
- You want chatbots that qualify leads and hand over to humans: Tiledesk, or Typebot if source-available terms are fine for you.
- You want inbox, CRM and marketing in one system: erxes.
- Your support is mostly email: FreeScout or Zammad.
- Your team already chats in Rocket.Chat: switch on Omnichannel instead of adding another tool.

How Founders Use Open-Source Customer Messaging
For an early-stage startup, every chat is also customer research: it tells you what confuses visitors and what they would pay for. Start with one shared inbox and a chat widget on your landing page, tag every conversation by topic and review the tags weekly; our guide to customer support strategies for startups covers the basics, and the benefits of live chat for customer service explains when chat pays off. Keep customer history in one place with one of the CRM tools for startups, and see our wider list of customer support tools for startups. Before you add an AI agent, write the answers it will use: an SEO FAQ answer bot turns support docs into pages people can find.
Open source can replace much more of a startup's paid stack. We have also checked open-source Buffer alternatives for social media and open-source GitHub Copilot alternatives for coding. Before you build anything, validate your startup idea with real customers, and turn your support answers into articles with the F/MS AI SEO Tool so customers find them in Google and AI assistants.
