Angel Investors for AI Startups (2027): Verified AI Angels, Angel Networks and Programmes Founders Can Actually Reach

Angel Investors for AI Startups: Who Really Writes Angel Cheques and How AI Founders Can Reach Them

Angel money is often the first outside capital an AI startup raises: a cheque from an experienced founder, an angel network or an angel-run programme before any venture fund will look at you. The problem is that most "top AI angel investors" lists are copied from investor databases, mix in venture capital firms and name people who no longer invest as angels. For this guide we kept only angels whose AI investments are shown on their own website, their investment vehicle's website or an official company announcement, and we added the angel networks, syndicates and programmes that AI founders can actually apply to. Everything was checked in October 2026.
Quick answer: if you can apply today, start with the routes that publish how to reach them: AI Grant (a $250,000 uncapped SAFE for AI product startups, per batch), Z Fellows (rolling applications, an optional $10,000), Keiretsu Forum with its AI interest group, and your region's angel network through EBAN, UKBAA, BANSEA or ABAN. Female founders in the UK should add Angel Academe. Famous individual angels such as Xavier Niel, Dharmesh Shah or Jeff Bezos are real AI investors, but most of them invest through referrals or their own vehicles, so you reach them with a warm introduction, not a cold pitch.

Angel-Run Programmes for AI Founders

1. AI Grant: $250,000 for AI product startups

AI Grant calls itself an accelerator for seed-stage AI startups. Each company it picks gets $250,000 on an uncapped SAFE with no discount (an MFN SAFE), $350,000 in Azure credits plus about $250,000 in other credits, a summit in San Francisco with advisors and founders, and a Demo Day in front of invited investors. Its FAQ says anyone can apply, no credentials required, and it looks for technical, pragmatic founders using AI models in a useful or engaging way; you need a Delaware corporation if accepted, which you can set up from almost anywhere. AI Grant is run by Hersh Desai and Lenny Bogdonoff; Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross have invested $10M in it. Its first batch included Perplexity, Cursor and Replicate. When we checked, applications for Batch 4 were closed, so watch the site for the next call. Its sister site aigrant.org gives $5,000 to $50,000 grants to open-source AI projects.

2. Z Fellows: one week and an optional $10,000

Z Fellows brings small groups of technical builders together with founders of billion-dollar companies for one week, with mentors such as Naval Ravikant, Dylan Field and Trae Stephens. AI and machine learning are among the fields its fellows work in. Equity is optional: you can join without money, or take a $10,000 investment at a $1B valuation cap. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with no deadline, you do not need a company yet, and rejected applicants may reapply.

Individual Angels With Verified AI Investments

These angels show their AI investments on their own websites or in official company announcements. None of them publishes an open application form, so a warm introduction from a founder they have backed is the realistic route.

3. Xavier Niel and Kima Ventures (France, worldwide)

Kima Ventures describes itself as "the most active business angel in the world", and its homepage links that tagline to Xavier Niel, the French tech entrepreneur. Kima says it backs 2 startups a week with 150k one-off tickets, about 100 new deals a year, at any stage and in any sector. Its most recent investments are AI companies: RainPath (AI-native software for pathology labs), Weflayr (an AI gateway) and Coach (an AI coach for sales reps), and its portfolio logos include Mistral AI, Photoroom and Harmattan AI. The site does not publish a pitch route, so reach Kima through a founder it has backed.

4. Dharmesh Shah (HubSpot co-founder, United States)

HubSpot's co-founder and CTO says on his investments page that he has invested in more than 100 startups as an angel and focuses only on software companies. OpenAI and People.ai (an AI platform for sales and marketing) are on his list. He is also open about the catch: he invests mostly as a hobby, does not actively review pitches, and looks at companies referred by founders in his network or portfolio.

5. Jeff Bezos (Bezos Expeditions, United States)

Jeff Bezos invests through Bezos Expeditions. Its list of selected investments is now full of AI and robotics companies: Contextual AI, Collaborative Robotics, Field AI, Figure, Generalist AI, Insitro, Periodic Labs, Perplexity, Physical Intelligence and Skild AI. Perplexity's Series B announcement confirms that Bezos invested through Bezos Expeditions. There is no application route, so treat Bezos as a signal of where AI money is going rather than as a pitch target.

6. The founder-angels in Perplexity's rounds

Official funding announcements are the most reliable way to see which founders invest in AI. When Perplexity announced its Series B in January 2024 ($73.6 million, led by IVP), the new investors included Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke, AngelList founder Naval Ravikant, Balaji Srinivasan, Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch and Austen Allred, next to NVIDIA and Jeff Bezos; Elad Gil and Nat Friedman had backed its earlier rounds. Founder-angels like these rarely take cold pitches. Read the announcements of AI companies close to yours, note which angels appear again and again, and ask those companies' founders for an introduction.

Angel Networks and Syndicates That Back AI Startups

7. Keiretsu Forum (global, with an AI interest group)

Keiretsu Forum is a network of accredited angel investors, venture capitalists and corporate investors, founded in California in 2000, with 53 chapters on 4 continents. Its AI Special Interest Group is open to members in every region and holds a monthly AI screening committee, where members nominate new AI companies. Keiretsu suits AI startups that already have revenue: applicants are typically raising A or B rounds of $500K to $2M. Startups apply to present through the website.

8. Hustle Fund Angel Squad (online, worldwide)

Angel Squad is Hustle Fund's angel community: more than 2,500 investors in 50+ countries who can invest from $1,000 in deals Hustle Fund shares. Hustle Fund says it reviews more than 1,000 deals a month and shares 3 to 5 with the Squad; one AI example on its page is Anthropic, which members bought through a secondary in early 2024. As a founder you do not apply to the Squad itself: you pitch Hustle Fund, and a deal it backs can then bring in many small angel cheques.

9. AngelList syndicates (global platform)

AngelList says more than 25,000 syndicates and funds use it. A syndicate is a lead angel who brings their backers into one special purpose vehicle (SPV), so dozens of small angel cheques appear as one line on your cap table, and AngelList handles the formation, filings, tax documents and distributions. For an AI startup this is the usual way to accept money from many founder-angels at once; ask your lead angel whether they run a syndicate.

10. Angel Academe (United Kingdom, female founders)

Angel Academe has backed female founders since 2014 with a mainly female angel network and, now, what it calls the UK's first EIS fund for female founders, which invests alongside the angels. Its founder criteria ask for a female founder or co-founder with at least 20% of founder equity, a technology-based solution (fintech, medtech, edtech, cyber security, clean tech or enterprise), a working product with traction, a UK company eligible for SEIS or EIS, a pre-money valuation of £1m to £15m, and a priced round of £250,000 to £5,000,000 (not an ASA or SAFE). An AI product fits if it meets these terms.

11. EBAN and UKBAA (Europe and the UK)

Most European angels invest through a local network. EBAN, the European Business Angel Network in Brussels, is Europe's largest association of business angel networks and other early-stage investors, so its member list is the quickest way to find the networks in your country. In the UK, the UK Business Angels Association keeps a membership directory of early-stage investors and runs regional angel hubs and pitch showcases with the British Business Bank. Neither invests directly; they point you to the networks that do.

12. BANSEA (Singapore and Southeast Asia)

BANSEA, the Business Angel Network of Southeast Asia, was founded in 2001 and calls itself Asia's oldest angel investment network. It lists 100+ members and 400+ invested companies, and talks to founders of any nationality whose company is domiciled in Singapore or elsewhere in Asia. Founders submit their startup on its website; members invest individually or as a group.

13. ABAN (Africa and the diaspora)

The African Business Angel Network is a pan-African network of angel groups founded in 2015. It reports more than 5,000 business angels across Africa and $35 million invested in more than 1,200 early-stage startups over the past decade, with technology among its members' sectors. It also runs Catalytic Africa, a matching fund with AfriLabs for startups from innovation hubs, and a cross-border angel vehicle (ABAIV).

14. North American angel groups

Most North American angel groups invest by region and sector rather than only in AI, but many back AI companies. Seattle's Alliance of Angels, for example, says most of its deals are SaaS, AI and life sciences. We checked 25 active groups, their cheque sizes and how to apply in our guide to angel investor groups in North America.

How to Raise Angel Money for an AI Startup

Angels who back AI companies hear the same pitch every day, so the questions they ask are predictable: what do you own that a large model provider cannot copy (data, distribution, a workflow), how much do model and compute costs eat into each customer, and who already uses the product. Credits help with the second question: AI Grant alone lists $350,000 in Azure credits. Keep the round simple, usually a SAFE, and let one lead angel bring the others in through a single SPV.

Angel Investors for AI Startups That We Removed or Changed

The 2025 version of this article listed 20 names. We removed those that are not angel investors, that now invest only through a venture firm, or whose AI investing we could not verify on an official page:
  • Elad Gil: his own website lists early AI investments such as Anthropic, Mistral, Perplexity, Harvey, Character and Cognition, but he now invests through Gil&Co, which he describes as a multi-stage investment firm.
  • Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross: still the backers of AI Grant, but according to press reports, including Reuters, both joined Meta's AI effort in 2025.
  • Ashton Kutcher: invests through Sound Ventures, a venture capital firm; the old claim about his investment in World Labs could not be confirmed on an official page.
  • Charlie Songhurst, Edward Lando and Ameet Patel: we found their AI deals only in investor databases that contradict each other, not on their own or official pages.
  • Will Griffith: a partner at ICONIQ Growth, a growth-stage investment firm, not an angel.
  • Village Global, Speedinvest, Index Ventures, Bloomberg Beta, IBM Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, 7BC Venture Capital, Flying Fish Partners, Spiral Ventures, Watertower Ventures, Adobe Ventures and IVP: venture capital or corporate venture funds. See our list of VCs for AI startups instead.
  • The US Department of Defense: a government department, not an angel investor.
  • Statistics and forecasts: the old survey figure ("56% of investors"), valuation forecasts and trend predictions came from third-party articles and were removed.

Which Angel Route Should an AI Founder Choose?

  • You are technical and pre-seed, building an AI product: apply to AI Grant when a batch opens and to Z Fellows now.
  • You have revenue and need $500K to $2M: pitch an angel network: Keiretsu Forum, your country's network via EBAN or UKBAA, BANSEA in Southeast Asia or ABAN in Africa.
  • You are a female founder in the UK with a priced round: Angel Academe; elsewhere, see the women-focused groups in our North America guide.
  • You already know founders of AI companies: ask them to introduce you to the angels in their rounds, such as those named in Perplexity's announcement, and to set up one SPV for the small cheques.
  • You need a larger round than angels can fill: move on to early-stage VC firms and AI-focused funds.

How AI Founders Combine Angels With Other Funding

Angel money rarely comes alone. Many AI founders combine it with an incubator or accelerator; we compared incubators for AI startups in Europe and startup incubators in Europe and in Asia. FAQ About Angel Investors for AI Startups

Who are the best angel investors for AI startups in 2027?

The ones you can verify and reach. Xavier Niel's Kima Ventures, Dharmesh Shah and Jeff Bezos show AI investments on their own sites, and founder-angels such as Tobi Lütke and Guillermo Rauch appear in Perplexity's funding announcement. For an open route, use AI Grant, Z Fellows, Keiretsu Forum or a regional angel network.

How much do angel investors put into AI startups?

Only some publish it. AI Grant invests $250,000 on an uncapped SAFE, Kima Ventures writes 150k one-off tickets, Z Fellows offers an optional $10,000, and Keiretsu Forum applicants usually raise $500K to $2M from many members together.

Is AI Grant still open?

AI Grant is active, but when we checked in October 2026 applications for Batch 4 were closed. Its open-source sister programme, aigrant.org, gives grants of $5,000 to $50,000.

Can I pitch famous angel investors directly?

Rarely. Dharmesh Shah says he does not actively review pitches and only looks at referrals, and Kima Ventures and Bezos Expeditions publish no pitch route. A warm introduction from a founder they have backed works far better.

Are there angel networks just for AI startups?

Very few. Most networks invest across sectors but have AI groups or many AI deals, such as Keiretsu Forum's AI Special Interest Group. AI Grant is the best-known angel-funded programme only for AI startups.

Are there angel investors for female AI founders?

Yes. Angel Academe in the UK invests only in companies with a female founder or co-founder and has an EIS fund alongside its angels. In the US, Golden Seeds and Pipeline Angels are covered in our North America guide.

What is an angel syndicate?

A lead angel who brings their backers into one SPV, so many small cheques appear as one investor on your cap table. AngelList says more than 25,000 syndicates and funds use its platform, and Hustle Fund's Angel Squad lets members invest from $1,000.

Why were VC firms removed from this list?

Firms such as Index Ventures, Speedinvest or Salesforce Ventures are venture capital funds, not angels. They are in our guide to VCs for AI startups.

Where can I get a backlink by writing about my AI startup?

You can publish a guest post in one of the Fe/male Switch startup blogs, which rank in Google and in AI tools. Get a quality backlink.
