Deep Tech Angel Investors in Europe: Angel Networks, Syndicates and Tax Breaks Science Founders Can Use
Deep tech startups need angel money earlier than most: before a quantum chip, a new material or a medical device can show revenue, someone has to pay for the lab, the prototype and the patents. Most "top deep tech angel investors" lists, including the 2025 version of this article, mix angels with venture capital funds, public banks, accelerators and crowdfunding platforms. This guide keeps only real angel networks, angel syndicates and angel associations that a European science founder can reach, each checked on its own website in October 2026, and explains the two tax incentives that make angels in the UK and Germany more willing to back risky technology: EIS/SEIS and INVEST.
Quick answer: in the UK, start with Cambridge Angels, OION in Oxford, Archangels in Scotland and the Conception X Angel Syndicate for science founders; on the continent, pitch BAND or BayStartUP in Germany, SICTIC in Switzerland, FiBAN in Finland, HBAN in Ireland, or find your country's network through EBAN and Business Angels Europe. If your company is in the UK, make it SEIS or EIS eligible first; in Germany, apply for the INVEST certificate.

Pan-European Angel Associations: Find the Network in Your Country
1. EBAN: the European Business Angel Network
EBAN in Brussels calls itself Europe's largest association of business angel networks and other early-stage investors: a network of networks that represents angels towards governments and shares deal flow and training with its members. According to its July 2026 press release, EBAN has 130 member organisations in 48 countries. EBAN does not invest itself; for a founder its value is the membership directory, which shows the angel networks in your country and sector. France Angels, the French national federation, joined EBAN in June 2026.
2. Business Angels Europe (BAE)
Business Angels Europe is the Brussels federation of national angel associations and trade bodies. It says its 30+ members represent more than 40,000 individual business angels, it runs the BAE Club, a small group of leading angel networks that share deals and expertise, and it works with the European Commission on programmes such as the ESIL Angel Academy for investing in deep tech. Like EBAN, BAE does not take pitches; use its member list to find the national association closest to you.
3. ESIL: matching next gen angels with deep tech researchers
ESIL is an EU-funded programme that connects a new generation of business angels with deep tech researchers, to help research results reach the market. It runs pitching sessions, masterclasses, matchmaking events and workshops, publishes legal templates, and offers an online Angel Academy course of more than 20 hours on investing in and mentoring deep tech innovators. For researchers it is a way to meet angels who already know how long lab-to-market takes.

4. UK Business Angels Association (UKBAA)
The UK Business Angels Association is the trade body for UK angel and early-stage investment. Its membership directory lists angel groups and syndicates, and anyone can join one of its regional angel hubs. Two programmes matter for deep tech: Venture Into Space, on investment opportunities in the space sector, and TechInvest, a series of pitch showcases for regional tech companies run with the British Business Bank.
5. Cambridge Angels
Cambridge Angels has invested since 2001 and has supported more than 150 companies. It is an invitation-only group of up to 65 members, most of them exited entrepreneurs in technology and healthcare, plus corporate members from venture capital. Its homepage says the focus is science, engineering, healthcare and IP-rich technology, and that members invested £21.3M and added 12 new companies to the portfolio in 2025. Cambridge Angels charges companies no fees, holds free one-to-one office hours with an investor, and takes applications on its website.
6. OION and Oxford Innovation Finance
Oxford Innovation Finance has connected companies and investors since 1994. It runs the Oxford Investment Opportunity Network (OION), an FCA-regulated angel network that calls itself one of the oldest, largest and most active in the UK, and the Oxford Innovation EIS Growth Fund, which invests next to the angels. Its members back science and technology startups developing breakthrough technologies, and founders apply through its Raise with us page.
7. Archangels (Scotland)
Archangels in Edinburgh has invested in Scottish technology and life science companies for 30 years and was named Angel Group of the Year at the UK Business Angels Association awards in July 2026. Its criteria for entrepreneurs are strict: the company must be based and registered in Scotland, work in technology or life sciences with a B2B model, own defensible IP, qualify for EIS, and seek initial funding of £250k to £2m. Archangels reviews about 200 enquiries a year and always leads the round. A recent example of its deep tech focus: advanced materials company iGii raised £22.7m in September 2026.

Tax Breaks That Make Angels Say Yes: SEIS, EIS and INVEST
Deep tech is risky, so in some countries the state shares the risk with the angel. Make your company eligible before you pitch: many UK angels, including Archangels, only invest in companies that qualify for EIS.
- SEIS (UK): according to HMRC's guidance for investors, the angel gets 50% income tax relief on up to £200,000 a year and keeps the shares for at least 3 years; gains are free of Capital Gains Tax and losses can be set against income. Your company can raise up to £250,000 under SEIS and must have gross assets of no more than £350,000 and fewer than 25 full-time employees.
- EIS (UK): 30% income tax relief on up to £1 million a year, or £2 million if at least £1 million goes into knowledge-intensive companies, which suits many deep tech startups. Since the EIS company rules were updated on 6 April 2026, a company can raise £10 million in 12 months and £24 million in its lifetime, within 7 years of its first commercial sale, with gross assets of up to £30 million and fewer than 250 employees; knowledge-intensive companies can raise more.
- INVEST (Germany): the BAFA INVEST grant pays angels 15% of the share price, from a minimum investment of €10,000 and up to €100,000 in grants per person, if they hold the shares for at least 3 years. The company must be under 7 years old, have fewer than 50 employees, turnover or a balance sheet of no more than €10 million, and no more than €15 million of venture capital so far, and it applies for an eligibility certificate first. BAFA's page was last updated on 30 April 2026.
Removed or Moved From the Old List
The 2025 version of this article listed 20 names, but only a handful were angel investors. Here is what happened to the rest:
- EIC Fund, Bpifrance, High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), Octopus Ventures, Verve Ventures, Seedcamp, Point Nine and Quantonation: venture capital or public investment funds, not angels. Several of them are in our guide to deep tech VCs in Europe.
- Techstars, Wayra, Startupbootcamp and The Family: accelerators and programmes, not angel groups. The Family's website now describes a 6-week remote fellowship for 5% equity. See our deep tech incubators in Europe.
- Angel Investment Network, Crowdcube and F6S: online platforms for matching, equity crowdfunding or startup applications, not investors.
- SyndicateRoom: now a manager of EIS and SEIS funds (such as Access EIS and Carbon13 SEIS) rather than an angel network.
- TechAngels and London Business Angels: removed. techangels.eu does not load and we found no official site; the old London Business Angels address does not load and the .co.uk domain shows only a "Launching Soon" page.
- Old FAQ statistics and forecasts: funding ranges, deal counts and trend predictions linked to third-party sites were removed because no official source confirmed them.
Which Angel Route Should a Deep Tech Founder Choose?
- You are a researcher or PhD founder before your first round: Conception X Raise in the UK, ESIL pitching events in the EU.
- You have IP and a first customer in the UK: Cambridge Angels or OION in the south of England, Archangels if you are in Scotland, and make the company SEIS or EIS eligible first.
- You are in Germany: submit your deck to BAND, enter a BayStartUP competition in Bavaria, and get the INVEST certificate so your angels receive the 15% grant.
- You are in Switzerland, Finland or Ireland: SICTIC, FiBAN or HBAN, which all take applications directly.
- You are anywhere else in Europe: find your national association through EBAN or Business Angels Europe, then pitch the regional networks they list.
- You need more than angels can give: combine angel money with EU grants and deep tech VCs (see below).

How Deep Tech Founders Combine Angels With Other Funding
Angels rarely carry a deep tech startup alone. Non-dilutive money buys lab time first: our list of grants for early-stage startups in Europe covers the EIC and national programmes, and Grant Grants tracks open funding calls. Once angels have led the first round, the next cheque usually comes from a fund: compare early-stage VC firms and, for North American expansion, deep tech VCs in North America. Where you build matters too: see the best deep tech cities in Europe and the best countries for startups in Europe.
If you are still before your first lab or office, an incubator can come before the angels: compare startup incubators in Europe and incubators for AI startups in Europe. Raising outside Europe? Our guides to angel investor groups in North America and angel investors for AI startups list the angels and networks there. Female founders should also look at grants for female entrepreneurs in Europe. And before you pitch anyone, validate your startup idea with real customers: angels back deep tech founders who can show a buyer, not only a breakthrough.
