Sprout Social vs Later: Full Social Media Suite or Simple Scheduler for a Small Team?
Sprout Social and Later both schedule posts, show analytics and help you answer comments, but they are built for different buyers. Sprout Social is a social media suite for teams that treat social as a customer channel: a shared inbox, review management, listening, competitor insights and reports, priced per seat. Later sells a visual scheduling and analytics tool for creators and small teams, with users included in each plan, and now leads its website with influencer marketing. We checked both pricing pages, in their default view, in October 2026.
Quick answer: a founder or a two-person marketing team that mainly needs to plan and publish posts should start with Later: Starter costs $18.75 a month billed yearly for one user and eight profiles, and Growth ($37.50) adds a second user, approvals and a social inbox. Choose Sprout Social when social media is also customer service and reporting for a team, or when you need X, Bluesky or Reddit: Essentials starts at $79 and Standard at $199 per seat a month on annual billing, with a 30-day free trial and no credit card.

What Each Tool Does in 2027
Sprout Social: one inbox, reports and listening for a social team
Sprout Social is a social media management platform that brings publishing, a shared inbox for comments, messages and reviews, analytics and reports into one place, and connects to eleven social networks: Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, Threads, Bluesky, Reddit and Snapchat, plus WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger messages. Its newer AI agent, Trellis, summarises the inbox, writes report takeaways and drafts replies and post variations; every seat gets 100 Trellis credits a month.
- Essentials, $79 per seat a month ($99 on monthly billing): a newer plan focused on publishing, with up to 5 profiles, optimal send times, profile and post-level reporting and Trellis.
- Standard, $199 per seat a month: 5 social profiles, the consolidated inbox and collaboration tools, keyword and location monitoring, review management and Trellis.
- Professional, $299 per seat a month: unlimited profiles, message tagging, competitor, tag and paid insights and AI Assist for posts.
- Advanced, $399 per seat a month: AI Assist for replies, sentiment in the inbox and reviews, the Sprout API, help desk integrations, team productivity and customer care reports and spike alerts. Enterprise is priced on request.
- Add-ons: Premium Analytics, Listening, Employee Advocacy and Professional Services from Standard up; Trellis Plus (1,000 AI credits) costs $28 per seat a month on annual billing. Sprout also sells an influencer marketing platform and NewsWhip media monitoring, which need no Sprout plan.
The catch for startups: prices on Sprout's pricing page are per seat, so three people on Standard cost $597 a month on annual billing before any add-on. The 30-day trial needs no credit card, which makes it easy to test the inbox and reports with your real accounts before you commit.
Best for: startups where social media is also support and sales: a consumer app answering hundreds of comments, a shop with reviews to manage, or a team that reports social results to investors or a board.

Later: visual scheduling, Link in Bio and analytics for creators and small teams
Later now presents itself first as an influencer marketing company: its homepage leads with campaigns for brands and earning tools for creators. The social media management product, Later Social, is still sold on its own pricing page: a visual drag-and-drop planner, auto-publishing to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Snapchat, best times to post, Link in Bio, Canva export and analytics. Plans count "social sets": one profile on each of the eight networks.
- Starter, $18.75 a month billed yearly: 1 social set (8 profiles), 1 user, 30 posts per profile a month, 5 AI credits, 3 months of analytics and Link in Bio. Extra users and sets are not available.
- Growth, $37.50 a month: 2 social sets (16 profiles), 2 users, 180 posts per profile a month, 50 AI credits, a year of analytics, approvals with internal and external reviewers, a social inbox for Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, UGC collection and custom roles. Extra social sets cost $11.25 and extra users $3.75 a month.
- Scale, $82.50 a month: 6 social sets (48 profiles), 4 users, unlimited posts, 100 AI credits, two years of analytics, custom analytics, Meta Ads analytics, competitive benchmarking for up to 20 competitors, brand health, brand mentions and support within 12 hours.
- Trial: 14 days free on every plan. The prices above are the yearly billing that Later's pricing page shows by default ("3 months free, 25% off"), in USD with taxes extra.
Influencer marketing: Later's influencer marketing platform uses its Later EdgeAI to match brands with creators and plan budgets, and Later also runs full-service campaigns. Both are sold through a sales call, with no public price, so they are a separate decision from the Later Social plans above.
Best for: solo founders, creators and small brands whose social media is Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest first and who want to plan a visual grid, schedule ahead and send followers to a Link in Bio page.

Sprout Social or Later: Which Should You Choose?
- Solo founder or creator, under 30 posts per profile a month: Later Starter. At $18.75 a month billed yearly it is the cheapest paid plan of the two by far.
- Two or three people who approve posts together: Later Growth. Two users, approvals, external reviewers and a social inbox for $37.50 a month; extra users are $3.75 each.
- You need X, Bluesky or Reddit: Sprout Social. Later does not list them.
- Social media is your support desk: Sprout Social Standard or higher, for the shared inbox, review management, help desk integrations and team reports.
- You report to a board, investors or a client: Sprout's reports and Premium Analytics, or Later Scale if two years of history and competitor benchmarks are enough.
- Your growth plan is creators and influencers: both sell influencer marketing separately; Later has made it its core business.
- No budget yet: neither has a free plan. See our free Hootsuite alternatives and open-source Buffer alternatives for tools you can start with for free.
- List your networks. If X, Bluesky or Reddit matter to your customers, only Sprout Social covers them.
- Count the people. Sprout charges every seat; Later includes 1, 2 or 4 users in a plan. Three people on Sprout Standard cost $597 a month on annual billing, three on Later Growth $41.25.
- Count posts a month. Later Starter allows 30 scheduled posts per profile a month and Growth 180; Scale is unlimited.
- Decide on the inbox. If answering comments, DMs and reviews is daily work, test Sprout's inbox; Later's inbox starts on Growth and covers Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.
- Run both trials. Sprout gives 30 days without a credit card, Later 14 days. Schedule a real week of posts in each before you pay.
What Changed Since the Old Version of This Comparison
- Prices: the old post quoted "$249+" for Sprout Social and "$25 a month" for Later. Sprout's Standard plan now costs $199 per seat a month on annual billing and a new Essentials plan costs $79; Later's default view now shows Starter at $18.75 a month billed yearly.
- Later is an influencer marketing company first. Its homepage leads with creator campaigns and its Later EdgeAI; scheduling lives on as Later Social, with plans counted in social sets.
- Sprout Social added AI and more networks. Its Trellis AI agent comes with every seat, and it now connects to Bluesky, Reddit and Snapchat; it also sells NewsWhip media monitoring and an influencer platform.
- Removed: claims credited to third-party review sites (Brandwatch, Zapier, LegalZoom, research.com, Planable, RecurPost), the RecurPost recommendation and the "common mistakes" list. We kept only what the vendors' own pages say.
How Founders Use Sprout Social, Later and Other Social Media Tools
Most early-stage startups need one or two networks where their customers are, a weekly posting plan and a way to see which posts bring visits. A scheduler is enough for that; a full suite pays off once several people answer customers on social every day. Comparing more tools?
