Free Metabase AI Alternatives: Ask Your Data Questions in Plain English Without Paying for BI
Metabase AI, the assistant Metabase calls Metabot, lets anyone type a question such as "revenue by plan last quarter" and get a chart or a SQL query back. Founders search for a free alternative because they assume it is a paid add-on, because they don't want to run a server, or because their data lives in Google Sheets, BigQuery or a spreadsheet rather than a database. This guide lists tools that answer data questions in plain English and have a genuinely free version. We checked each one on its official pricing page, documentation or GitHub in October 2026, and we say exactly what is free and what is not: many "free" BI tools keep their AI on paid plans.
Quick answer: if you can self-host, the cheapest Metabase AI is Metabase Open Source itself, with your own AI provider key. If your data is in Google's cloud, use Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio), whose Conversational Analytics is free for all users. For a free open-source BI tool with conversational analytics built in, try Helical Insight; to ask questions from Claude or ChatGPT, connect them to Apache Superset or Wren AI; for live product metrics, use the Grafana Cloud free tier; and for a spreadsheet with no setup at all, Julius AI's free plan.

Is Metabase AI Free? What You Get in 2027
Yes, if you host Metabase yourself. The Metabase AI settings documentation says that connecting your own AI provider doesn't require a paid Metabase plan, and the pricing page lists "Ask questions with AI on your preferred model" and an MCP server in the free Open Source edition. Metabot can build a chart from a question in plain English, write SQL in the editor (it generates the query but does not run it for you), fix SQL errors and explain a chart. You connect providers such as Anthropic, OpenAI, OpenRouter, Mistral, DeepSeek, Azure or Amazon Bedrock, or a self-hosted model served with vLLM, and you pay that provider for the tokens you use.
- Open Source: free, unlimited users, Metabot with your own AI key. You run and update the server.
- Cloud Starter: $100 a month ($90 billed yearly) with 5 users included and $6 for each extra user. Same AI features.
- Pro: $575 a month with 10 users included. Adds AI for your customers inside embedded analytics, plus AI usage auditing and controls. Enterprise starts at $20,000 a year.
- Metabase AI service: for Metabase Cloud only, $3.75 per million tokens with the first million included, if you don't want your own AI key.
So you need an alternative only if you can't or won't run a server, your data sits somewhere Metabase doesn't reach well, or you want an AI assistant built into a different kind of tool. Metabase 64 promoted "Metabot on (almost) any model" when we checked.

The Best Free Metabase AI Alternatives in 2027
1. Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio): free Conversational Analytics
Google renamed Looker Studio to Data Studio in April 2026, and "Gemini in Looker" became "Gemini in Data Studio". According to the Data Studio Conversational Analytics documentation, the new chat-with-your-data experience is available to all Data Studio users, and it became generally available on 30 July 2026. The catch is the data: the new experience works with BigQuery tables and BigQuery data agents. The older version that also chats with Google Sheets, CSV files and Looker is only for Data Studio Pro subscribers, as is the Code Interpreter. If your data is small, the free BigQuery sandbox needs no credit card and gives 10 GiB of storage and 1 TiB of queries a month, though its tables expire after 60 days.
Best for: startups already on Google Cloud or BigQuery that want plain-English questions next to free dashboards.
2. Helical Insight: open-source BI with conversational analytics in the free edition
Helical Insight calls itself an AI-powered open-source unified BI platform and promises "Every Feature. Free Forever. No Exceptions." The free GitHub edition (AGPL-3.0) includes AI-powered conversational analytics: its Instant BI feature lets you type a question such as "show me sales of last quarter" and get a report without SQL. It also includes features Metabase keeps for Pro, such as SSO, row-level security, embedding and multi-tenancy. Version 7.0.0 came out in July 2026. The trade-off is setup: it is a Java application you host yourself, and the website does not say which AI models power the conversational feature.
Best for: teams that want a self-hosted BI tool with plain-English questions and enterprise features without a paid tier.
3. Apache Superset: ask from Claude or ChatGPT through MCP
Apache Superset is a free, Apache-licensed BI platform, and since version 6.1 it ships an opt-in MCP service. Superset's guide to using AI with Superset explains that you connect Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP-compatible client and then explore datasets, build charts and dashboards, and run SQL in plain English, with Superset's own role permissions applied. An admin has to enable and deploy the MCP server first, and you need a capable AI client: Superset notes that ChatGPT's MCP connectors require a Pro, Team, Enterprise or Edu plan. If you would rather not host Superset, Preset's free Starter plan (up to 5 users) runs it for you, but it has no AI features; Preset's AI chatbot starts on paid plans.
Best for: teams that already use Claude or ChatGPT every day and want them to answer questions from company data.

4. Wren AI: open-source text-to-SQL for your AI agents
Wren AI describes itself as open-source generative BI. Its core is Apache 2.0 licensed: you describe what your data means (metrics, joins, definitions) in YAML and Markdown in your own repository, and AI agents such as Claude Code, Cursor or any MCP client turn business questions into SQL against that layer, then build a dashboard you can share. It connects to more than 22 data sources, including PostgreSQL, BigQuery, Snowflake and DuckDB, and it ships weekly: version 0.17.0 came out on 27 October 2026. The open-source engine is free; the hosted Wren AI Cloud with a team interface starts at $179 a month billed annually, with a 7-day trial.
Best for: a technical founder or data person who wants AI answers that always use the same definition of revenue or churn.
5. Grafana Cloud Free: an AI assistant for live metrics
Grafana is the open-source standard for operational dashboards. According to Grafana's pricing page, the free Grafana Cloud tier includes Grafana Assistant for 3 active AI users a month, with 40 million tokens per user, alongside 3 active visualization users and 14 days of data retention. The Assistant helps you query data, build dashboards and troubleshoot problems in plain English. It runs in Grafana Cloud, or in a self-managed Grafana connected to Grafana's cloud backend; plain self-hosted Grafana does not include it. It is strongest for product events, sign-ups per minute and server health rather than monthly revenue reports.
Best for: small product teams that watch live metrics and want to ask "why did sign-ups drop?" without writing queries.
6. Chat2DB Community: a free AI SQL client for your database
Chat2DB Community is a free, local-first database client for Windows, Mac and Linux. It connects to more than 40 databases, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, ClickHouse, Snowflake and BigQuery, and its AI assistant, connected to your own model, writes, explains and optimises SQL from plain-English questions. It also draws charts and simple dashboards. Read the licence: since version 5.3.0 it is a modified Apache 2.0 licence that allows personal and internal company use but not offering it to others as a product or service without permission.
Best for: the person on the team who knows the database a little and wants AI help writing the queries.
7. Julius AI: plain-English analysis of spreadsheets, free to start
Julius AI is a hosted AI analyst: you upload a spreadsheet or file, ask a question and get charts and an explanation back, with nothing to install. Its free plan gives you a daily credit allowance and Julius's Lite models. Plus costs $20 a month ($16 billed annually) for 2,000 credits and frontier models, and connecting databases such as Postgres, BigQuery and Snowflake is listed on paid plans. It is the easiest option for a one-off question about a CSV, but it is not a shared BI tool, and you upload your data to a third-party service.
Best for: founders without a database who want answers from exported spreadsheets today.
8. Databricks Free Edition: Genie for learning and prototypes
Databricks Free Edition is a no-cost version of Databricks that includes Genie, which lets you explore and visualise data with natural-language prompts, plus dashboards and one small SQL warehouse. The Free Edition limitations are important: compute is quota-limited, and "Free Edition accounts may not be used for commercial purposes". Use it to learn how AI-assisted BI works or to prototype, not to run your company's reporting.
Best for: founders and students learning data and AI tools before choosing a stack.
Metabase AI Alternatives Whose AI Is Not Free
These tools are often listed as free alternatives, but their AI features need a paid plan:
- Power BI: Power BI Desktop is free, but Microsoft's Copilot for Power BI documentation requires a paid Fabric capacity (F2 or higher) or Power BI Premium (P1 or higher), and says that a Pro or Premium Per User licence alone isn't sufficient. Trial capacities and free SKUs aren't supported.
- Lightdash: the open-source edition is free, but AI agents and MCP are listed on Cloud Pro, at $3,000 a month.
- Preset (hosted Superset): the Starter plan is free for up to 5 users without AI; Professional ($20 per user a month, billed annually) includes a 14-day AI chatbot trial, and MCP is an Enterprise feature.
- Zoho Analytics: the free plan covers 2 users and 10,000 rows, but we could not confirm on Zoho's pricing page that its Ask Zia assistant is part of it.
- Hex: the free Community plan includes only a trial of the Hex agent.
- Data Studio Pro features: the older Conversational Analytics for Sheets and CSV data, and the Code Interpreter, need Data Studio Pro.
Text-to-SQL Tools That Are Archived or Inactive
Several open-source "chat with your database" projects that appear on older lists are no longer safe picks:
- Vanna: the MIT-licensed text-to-SQL library is still installable, but its GitHub repository was archived (read-only) after version 2.0.2 in February 2026. The company now sells hosted plans from $50 a month.
- PandasAI: its last release, 3.0.0, came out in October 2025, and the repository has had no commits since then.
- Dataherald: the natural-language-to-SQL engine has had no commits since July 2024.
The 2025 version of this article listed general BI and reporting tools instead of AI tools: Redash, Tableau Public, Eclipse BIRT, Seal Report, Knowage, KNIME and Power BI Desktop. They are still useful for dashboards and reports, and we compare them in our guides to open-source Metabase alternatives and free Looker alternatives.
Which Free Metabase AI Alternative Should You Choose?
- You can run a small server and like Metabase: stay on Metabase Open Source and add your own AI key. It is the most direct free Metabase AI.
- Your data is in BigQuery or Google Cloud: Data Studio's Conversational Analytics.
- You want a free self-hosted BI tool with AI and SSO built in: Helical Insight.
- Your team lives in Claude or ChatGPT: Apache Superset's MCP service, or Wren AI if you want governed metric definitions.
- You watch live product or server metrics: Grafana Cloud Free.
- You write SQL against your own database: Chat2DB Community.
- You only have spreadsheets: Julius AI's free plan.
- You are learning: Databricks Free Edition, but not for business use.

How Founders Use AI to Ask Their Data Questions
AI only gives good answers if the data underneath is clean and the question is clear. Before you connect any assistant, pick the three to five numbers that show whether your business model works; our list of key metrics in the business model canvas helps. Give each metric one written definition (what counts as an active user, what counts as revenue), because tools such as Metabase, Superset and Wren AI answer far better when those definitions exist. Then test the assistant on questions you already know the answer to, and keep a human check on any number that goes into an investor update or pricing decision.
Plain-English data tools fit into a wider open-source stack: an AI database with our open-source Airtable AI alternatives, internal admin panels with the open-source Retool alternatives, simple data apps with the open-source AppSheet alternatives, automations that feed your database with the open-source Zapier alternatives, and an AI workspace for notes with the open-source Notion AI alternatives. If you track website traffic, our guide to using Google Analytics for keyword optimisation shows what to look at.
Data also tells you whether customers want what you sell. Before you build more, validate your startup idea with real users, and once your numbers tell a story, turn them into articles with the F/MS AI SEO Tool so customers find you in Google and in AI assistants. Our guide on how to get cited by ChatGPT explains the second part.

No. Copilot needs a paid Fabric capacity (F2 or higher) or Power BI Premium (P1 or higher). Microsoft says a Pro or Premium Per User licence alone isn't enough, and free and trial capacities aren't supported.
Can I use ChatGPT or Claude to query my company data?
Yes. Apache Superset, Metabase and Wren AI offer MCP servers that let Claude, ChatGPT or other MCP clients query your data with your permissions applied. Superset notes that ChatGPT's MCP connectors need a Pro, Team, Enterprise or Edu plan.
Is Vanna still a good free text-to-SQL tool?
