Open-Source Adobe Express Alternatives (2027): 10 Free Tools for Social Graphics, Flyers, Photo Edits and Quick Videos, From Penpot to Kdenlive

Open-Source Adobe Express Alternatives for Social Graphics, Flyers, Photo Edits and Quick Videos

Adobe Express is Adobe's quick-design app for social posts, flyers, short videos and simple photo edits. You may still know it as Creative Cloud Express, the name it launched under in December 2021, or as Adobe Spark before that. It has a free plan, but templates, AI generations and brand features are tied to an Adobe account and a subscription. No single open-source app copies all of Adobe Express, so this guide does it by job: one tool for social graphics, one for photo edits, one for quick video, one for print layouts. We checked every tool on its official website and repository in October 2026: the licence, the latest release and what it really does. Tools that are not open source, or do a different job, are listed separately at the end.
Quick answer: for social graphics and templates in the browser, use Penpot; for logos, flyers and posters, Inkscape; for photo edits, GIMP; for illustration with optional local AI, Krita; for short videos with automatic subtitles, Kdenlive (or Shotcut and OpenShot if you want something simpler); and for print-ready PDFs, Scribus.

The Best Open-Source Adobe Express Alternatives in 2027

1. Penpot: social graphics and templates in the browser

Penpot calls itself the open-source design platform for teams, and it is the closest thing to Adobe Express's canvas you can run in a browser. It is built for product design, but the same tools work for social posts, banners and ad sets: boards in any size, components, and shared libraries and templates, so a whole team uses the same colours, fonts and logo. It works with open standards (SVG, CSS, HTML and JSON), has plugins and an API, and its source code is MPL-2.0, so you can self-host it with Docker or Kubernetes. The hosted Professional plan costs $0 and Penpot describes it as free and fully featured; Unlimited is $7 per editor a month, capped at $175. Version 2.18.5 came out on 26 October 2026, with 2.19 in release-candidate testing. What you do not get: Adobe's ready-made template library and stock photos, so build your own templates once.

2. Inkscape: logos, flyers and posters

Inkscape is the established open-source vector editor, and it covers the Adobe Express jobs that need clean, scalable graphics: logos, icons, flyers, posters, event badges and social graphics that export to PNG or SVG at any size. Most of its code is under the GPL version 2 or later, and the complete binaries are covered by GPL version 3 or later, according to its licence file. Version 1.4.4 was tagged in May 2026. It is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux and takes longer to learn than Adobe Express, but it does not limit what you can design.

3. GIMP: photo edits, cut-outs and retouching

GIMP handles the photo side of Adobe Express: cropping and resizing, colour fixes, retouching, removing a background by hand with selections and masks, and combining photos and text into one image. It is free software under the GNU General Public License and runs on Linux, macOS and Windows. GIMP 3.2.6 was released on 10 September 2026. Adobe Express removes a photo background in one click; in GIMP you do it yourself with the selection tools, which takes a few minutes more but gives you full control.

4. Krita: illustration, with optional open-source AI

Krita describes itself as a professional, free and open-source painting program, licensed under the GNU GPL. Use it for illustrated social posts, stickers, comics and hand-drawn brand assets; it also does frame-by-frame animation. Krita 5.3.4 and 6.0.4 were released on 15 September 2026. If you miss Adobe's generative AI, the Generative AI for Krita plugin (GPL-3.0) adds generative fill, inpainting to add or remove objects, and upscaling. Its developers say you can run everything locally on your own hardware with open models, or use their cloud service to start. Version 1.53.0 came out in August 2026.

5. Kdenlive: short videos with automatic subtitles

Kdenlive, the KDE video editor, is the strongest open-source replacement for Adobe Express's video side. It is a multi-track editor for Linux, Windows, macOS and BSD with simple title clips, links to Glaxnimate for motion graphics, and subtitles you can create with automatic transcription, which matters for social video that most people watch muted. Kdenlive is GPL-3.0, and version 26.08.2 was released on 13 October 2026.

6. Shotcut: a cross-platform video editor for reels

Shotcut is a free, open-source, cross-platform video editor (GPL-3.0) for Windows, macOS and Linux. It is a good fit for vertical reels, product demos and screen recordings when you want more control than Adobe Express gives you but less complexity than a full studio. Version 26.9.27 was the current download when we checked, announced on 27 September 2026, and the September release added auto ducking and adjustment clips.

7. OpenShot: the simplest open-source video editor

OpenShot is the easiest of the three video editors to start with: drag clips onto a timeline, add titles and transitions, export. It is free software under the GNU GPL version 3 or later, runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and version 4.0.1 came out on 27 September 2026 with an improved razor tool and faster editing.

8. Scribus: print-ready flyers, brochures and PDFs

Scribus is an open-source desktop publishing app for the print jobs people often do in Adobe Express: flyers, brochures, posters, menus and multi-page PDFs. Unlike a quick-design app, it is made for print shops, with page layouts, master pages and print-ready PDF export. It is licensed under the GPL version 2 or later. The stable version is 1.6.6, tagged in April 2026; the 1.7 series is a development line for the future 1.8, so stay on 1.6 for real work.

9. Excalidraw: quick diagrams and explainer visuals

Excalidraw is a free, MIT-licensed whiteboard with a hand-drawn look. It is not a template tool, but it is the fastest way to make the explainer visuals that do well on LinkedIn and in pitch decks: a process, a before-and-after, a simple framework. It exports to PNG and SVG, has real-time collaboration with end-to-end encryption, and works offline as a web app. A paid Excalidraw+ plan exists for teams, but the open-source editor is free.

10. Graphite: a new open-source graphics editor in the browser

Graphite is a free, open-source vector graphics editor and animation engine that runs as a web app and is available now in alpha. It combines layers with node-based generative design, so you can build a graphic once and change it without redoing the work. Its code is MIT or Apache-2.0 at your choice, desktop apps for Windows, Mac and Linux are in release-candidate testing, and photo editing and desktop publishing are on its roadmap. Treat it as one to watch rather than your main tool for now.

What Changed Since the 2025 Version: Renamed, Not Open Source or Not a Fit

  • Adobe Creative Cloud Express is now Adobe Express: Adobe launched Creative Cloud Express on 13 December 2021 as the successor to Adobe Spark, and by October 2022 Adobe was calling it Adobe Express. Its pricing page still says Spark has been updated to Adobe Express.
  • Polotno is not open source: it looks like an open-source Canva or Adobe Express clone, but its licence gives a 30-day trial for development only, needs a paid subscription for production use and does not include the source code. Only the Konva.js canvas library underneath it is MIT-licensed.
  • Blender: open source and excellent, but a 3D creation suite, not a quick-design tool. If you need 3D, see our lists of open-source Blender alternatives and free Blender alternatives.
  • darktable and RawTherapee: both are open source and maintained (RawTherapee 5.13 came out on 26 July 2026), but they are RAW photo developers for photographers, not social-graphics tools. They are covered in our open-source Photoshop alternatives and open-source Affinity Photo alternatives.
  • Canva, Photopea and other free editors: free to use but not open source. If free is enough and open source does not matter, see our free Canva Pro alternatives and free Adobe Creative Cloud Express alternatives.

Which Open-Source Adobe Express Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You post on social media every week: Penpot, with your own templates and brand library, plus Kdenlive for video.
  • You need a logo, flyer or poster: Inkscape; for a multi-page brochure or a print-shop PDF, Scribus.
  • You mostly edit product or team photos: GIMP.
  • You want illustrations or AI image fill without a subscription: Krita with the Generative AI plugin, running locally.
  • You want the easiest video editor: OpenShot; for more control, Shotcut or Kdenlive.
  • You need a quick diagram for a post or pitch deck: Excalidraw.
  • You cannot install software on your laptop: Penpot, Excalidraw and Graphite run in the browser.

How Founders Use an Open-Source Design Stack

For an early-stage startup, design is mostly repetition: the same logo, colours and fonts on every post, slide and flyer. Set that up once: make your logo in Inkscape, build a Penpot library with your colours, fonts and three or four post templates, and keep a short video template in Kdenlive. Our tips on thinking like a big brand before you are one help you decide what goes into that kit, and our overview of graphic design programs for startup founders compares the wider field. Adobe Express also schedules social posts; to do that with open source, see our open-source Buffer alternatives. For AI images, we have checked open-source DALL-E alternatives and open-source Adobe Firefly alternatives.
