Open-Source Krita Alternatives (2027): 13 Free Painting, Vector, Animation and Collaborative Drawing Apps by Job

Open-source Krita alternatives 2027: free painting, vector, animation and collaborative drawing apps

Open-Source Krita Alternatives: Which Free App Replaces Krita for Painting, Vector Art, Animation or Drawing Together

Krita is already free and open source, so most people who search for an open-source Krita alternative do not want to save money. They want a tool that is better at one job: a lighter painting app, a photo editor, vector illustration, 2D animation, storyboards, drawing with friends on one canvas, or handwritten sketching on a tablet. Below, every app is matched to the job it does better than Krita. We checked each one on its official website and on GitHub or GitLab in October 2026: the licence, the platforms and the latest release. Apps from the 2025 version of this article that are not open source, or no longer exist, are listed in a separate section.
Quick answer: for distraction-free painting, use MyPaint; for photo editing and retouching, GIMP; for logos and vector illustration, Inkscape; for simple frame-by-frame animation, Pencil2D; for studio-style 2D animation, OpenToonz or Tahoma2D; for storyboards and 2D in 3D, Blender Grease Pencil; and to paint on the same canvas with other people, Drawpile.

What Krita Offers in 2027 (and Why You Might Still Switch)

Krita describes itself as a professional free and open source painting program, licensed under the GNU GPL. It has many brush types, layers, drawing assistants, stabilizers and animation tools. The Krita download page offered Krita 5.3.4.1 (released 7 October 2026) for Windows, macOS and Linux, plus Android builds on Google Play; a Krita 6 line (6.0.4, September 2026) is released alongside it. Apple iPads and iPhones are not supported. So the usual reasons to look elsewhere are: you need an iPad or browser option, a lighter app for an older laptop, a dedicated animation or vector tool, or live collaboration, which Krita does not have.

Which open-source Krita alternative fits your job?

The Best Open-Source Krita Alternatives by Job

1. MyPaint: distraction-free painting

MyPaint calls itself an easy, nimble and distraction-free tool for painting and sketching from scratch. Its brush engine can imitate charcoal, pencils, ink or paint, and a fullscreen mode hides everything except your brush. It is GPL-2.0 and downloads for Linux (Flathub), macOS (MacPorts) and Windows. Be aware that the last stable release, 2.0.1, dates from May 2020, although the MyPaint code repository was still being updated in September 2026. Pick it if Krita feels too busy for quick paintings.

2. GIMP: when the job is photo editing

GIMP is the open-source image editor for GNU/Linux, macOS and Windows. It has painting tools, but its strength is photo retouching, composites, masks and textures, which Krita does less well. Version 3.2.6 came out on 10 September 2026. If photo work is your main job, see our open-source GIMP alternatives and free GIMP alternatives too.

3. Inkscape: logos and vector illustration

Inkscape is a free and open source vector graphics editor used for cartoons, clip art, logos, typography and diagrams. Vector shapes stay sharp at any size, which painted pixels in Krita do not, and SVG is its native format. Most of its source code is GPL-2.0-or-later and the full program is GPL-3.0-or-later. Version 1.4.4 was tagged in May 2026. A common workflow is to sketch in Krita and redraw the clean logo in Inkscape. We also compare open-source Illustrator alternatives and CorelDRAW open-source alternatives.

4. Pencil2D: simple hand-drawn animation

Pencil2D is an easy, intuitive tool for 2D hand-drawn animation. You can switch between raster and vector layers to sketch, ink and paint, and it runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD. It is GPL-2.0 and, in its own words, free to use even commercially. Version 0.7.2 was announced on 26 March 2026. Choose it over Krita's animation tools if you want fewer panels and a faster start.

5. OpenToonz: studio-grade 2D animation

OpenToonz is based on Toonz from Digital Video in Italy and was customised by Studio Ghibli, which used it for many years; Dwango launched the open-source project with both companies. It covers scanning, ink and paint, colour design and compositing, and it is free for commercial and non-commercial projects under a modified BSD licence. OpenToonz V1.8 was released in June 2026, with nightly builds still coming out in October 2026.

6. Tahoma2D: OpenToonz made simpler, with stop motion

Tahoma2D is free software for 2D and stop motion animators, built on OpenToonz. Its site lists what it adds: a simplified workspace, brush tips and tilt support, a perspective grid and symmetry tool, live clipping masks, automated lip sync with Rhubarb and DSLR camera support on macOS, Linux and Windows. It uses the same modified BSD licence, and version 1.6.3 came out on 1 September 2026.

7. Synfig Studio: vector animation without drawing every frame

Synfig Studio is free and open-source 2D animation software (GNU GPL v3) for Windows, Linux and macOS. It uses vector and bitmap artwork and tweening, so you do not have to draw every frame. Its site offers a stable and a development version: the stable line is 1.4.5 (May 2024), while development builds reached 1.5.5 in March 2026.

8. Blender Grease Pencil: storyboards and 2D drawn in 3D

Blender's Grease Pencil lets you draw directly in the 3D viewport: traditional 2D animation, cut-out animation, motion graphics and storyboards, with layers, onion skinning and strokes you can attach to 3D objects. Blender is released under the GNU GPL, and version 5.2.3 LTS was released in October 2026. It is heavier than Krita, but no other open-source tool mixes 2D drawing and 3D scenes like this. 9. Drawpile: drawing together on one canvas

Drawpile is a collaborative drawing program: several people draw, sketch, paint and animate on the same canvas at the same time. It is GPL-3.0 and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, and its web version also works on iPads, which Krita does not support. Version 2.3.1 came out on 22 October 2026. Use it for art classes, live jams or a team mood board.

10. Rnote: pen sketching and handwritten notes

Rnote is an open-source vector-based drawing app for sketching, handwritten notes and annotating PDFs and pictures, aimed at students, teachers and drawing-tablet owners. It has an infinite canvas, pressure-sensitive input and an adaptive interface for small and large screens. It is GPL-3.0; version 0.14.2 came out in May 2026. Its site warns that the file format is still unstable and may change between versions.

11. LazPaint: a light editor with raster and vector layers

LazPaint is a free cross-platform image editor with raster and vector layers, written in Lazarus (Free Pascal); its README compares it to Paint.NET. It is GPL-3.0 and version 7.3 (March 2026) downloads for Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and macOS. It suits quick edits on older computers where Krita feels slow.

12. AzPainter: illustration on Linux

AzPainter is a painting program for illustration and image editing with 8-bit and 16-bit colour. It runs on Linux, and on macOS with XQuartz, is GPL-3.0 and had its latest tagged release, 3.0.12, in April 2026. Its documentation is mostly in Japanese.

13. Graphite: procedural vector design to watch

Graphite is a free, open source vector graphics editor and animation engine, still in alpha. It combines layers with a node graph for nondestructive, procedural design. The web app is live and desktop apps for Windows, Mac and Linux are in a release candidate stage; digital painting and full raster editing are listed as upcoming. The code is licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0 and was still updated daily in October 2026. Try it for generative graphics, not yet for painting.

Removed From the Old List: Not Open Source or Discontinued

The 2025 version of this article listed several apps that are free but not open source, or that no longer exist:
  • Paint 3D: Microsoft removed it from the Microsoft Store on 4 November 2024, according to its list of deprecated Windows features. Use Paint or Photos for simple edits.
  • Microsoft Fresh Paint: a free Microsoft Store app, but closed source, so not an open-source alternative.
  • Artweaver Free: a free download with a paid Artweaver Plus licence; the code is not open.
  • Vectr: now an AI vector graphics editor and logo maker with paid plans; proprietary.
  • Photopea: a free online photo editor in the browser, but proprietary. We cover it in our free Photoshop alternatives.
  • Sketchbook: Sketchbook Pro for macOS and Windows and Sketchbook for Android and iOS are free or low-cost, but closed source. See our free Procreate alternatives for tablet apps.

Which Open-Source Krita Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You only want to paint, with no clutter: MyPaint.
  • You edit photos more than you paint: GIMP.
  • You need logos, icons or print-ready vector art: Inkscape.
  • You animate by hand: Pencil2D to start, OpenToonz or Tahoma2D for bigger projects, Synfig if you prefer tweening.
  • You storyboard or mix 2D with 3D: Blender Grease Pencil.
  • You want to draw with other people, or on an iPad in the browser: Drawpile.
  • You sketch and take notes with a pen: Rnote.
  • Your computer is old or you are on Linux: LazPaint or AzPainter.
  • Painting remains your main job: stay with Krita; nothing open source beats its brush engine and animation tools in one app.

How Founders Use Open-Source Art Tools

A startup rarely needs a full design team at the start. Founders use Krita or MyPaint for illustrations and social posts, Inkscape for the logo and icons, GIMP for product photos and Pencil2D or Blender for a short explainer animation, all without licence fees. Keep the source files (KRA, SVG, XCF) in one shared folder so a designer can pick them up later. When a visual is ready, put it to work: validate your startup idea with a landing page and real testers before you build more, and use the F/MS AI SEO Tool to write the articles that show those visuals to people searching Google and AI assistants.
