Open-Source Axure Alternatives (2027): 8 Tools for Logic-Rich Prototypes, Conditions, Variables and UX Specs, From Quant-UX to Penpot

Open-Source Axure Alternatives: Tools for Logic-Rich Prototypes, Conditions, Variables and UX Specs

Axure RP is the tool UX teams pick when a clickable mock-up is not enough: prototypes with conditions, variables, multi-state dynamic panels, working forms, data-driven tables and notes for developers, all without code. That power comes with a subscription per user, and Axure is not open source. If you want to replace Axure with open-source tools, you need to know which ones can really handle logic and data, and which are only good for wireframes. We checked every tool below on its official website, documentation and GitHub repository on 2 November 2026: the licence, the latest activity, and exactly which Axure jobs it covers. Tools that are free but not open source, and open-source projects that have stopped, are listed separately.
Quick answer: the closest open-source match for Axure's logic is Quant-UX: it has logic flows with rules, data binding, JavaScript scripts and web service calls, plus built-in user testing. For team design work with click-through prototypes and specs, use Penpot. When the prototype should run on real state and data, build it in Plasmic, Webstudio or Appsmith. For offline mock-ups use Pencil Project, for living component documentation Storybook, and for flow diagrams draw.io. No single open-source tool does everything Axure does, so most teams combine two.

What Axure RP Does, and What It Costs in 2027

According to the Axure website, Axure RP 11 lets you combine event triggers, conditions and actions, add variables, build working forms, use multi-state dynamic panels for pop-ups and mobile screens, and create data-driven tables with the repeater widget. Next to the prototype you draw flow diagrams, write notes and specifications, and publish to Axure Cloud, where developers get redlines, assets and CSS inspection. Axure offers a free 30-day trial.
On the Axure pricing page (default view with annual billing, checked 2 November 2026), Axure RP Pro costs $29 per user per month and Axure RP Team $49 per user per month; Enterprise is priced on request. Every subscription includes unlimited publishing and hosting on Axure Cloud. Axure no longer sells perpetual licences, and qualified students and teachers can get the Team edition free with an education licence. The open-source tools below cost nothing to use or self-host; you pay for a server and your own time instead, and some sell optional cloud plans.

The Best Open-Source Axure Alternatives in 2027

1. Quant-UX: the closest open-source match for Axure's logic

Quant-UX is a prototyping, usability and research tool, and it is the only open-source option on this list with Axure-style logic inside a design canvas. Its help pages describe Logic Flows: you place a logic operator between a button and several screens, add rules (for example, a payment field must equal a value), and the prototype follows the first link whose rule matches. Data binding stores what testers type in variables such as address.street, so you can show it again on a later screen or use it in rules. A Script widget runs small JavaScript snippets to calculate values or change styles and visibility (a beta feature you switch on in settings), and a Web Service element loads or sends real data through an API. On top of that come form validation, master screens, design tokens and user testing with recordings, heatmaps, A/B tests and surveys.
Quant-UX is free on quant-ux.com. The Quant-UX front end is licensed under GPL-3.0 and the Java backend under MIT; self-hosting uses Docker Compose with MongoDB and needs a mail server. The code was updated in October 2026. The trade-off: it has no Axure-style flow diagrams or specification documents, so pair it with draw.io and a shared document.

2. Penpot: team design, click-through prototypes and specs

Penpot is the open-source design platform most teams move to from Axure, Figma or Adobe XD. In prototype mode you link boards with On click, Mouse enter, Mouse leave and After delay triggers, open, toggle or close overlays, add Dissolve, Slide and Push animations, and build several flows, each with its own shareable link. Penpot does not have Axure's conditions or variables: the Penpot prototyping guide describes navigation and overlays only. For states, component variants hold a button's primary, disabled or hover look in one component, and annotations on main components show your specifications in every copy and in the Inspect tab, where developers also get code.
The Penpot repository is licensed under MPL-2.0, and version 2.19 was in release candidates in October 2026. On Penpot's pricing page the Professional cloud plan costs $0 and is described as free and fully featured; Unlimited costs $7 per editor per month, capped at $175 a month, and Enterprise $25 per member per month. You can also self-host Penpot for free.

3. Plasmic: prototypes with state variables on real code

Plasmic is an open-source visual builder for websites and apps that works with your existing codebase. It covers Axure's logic in a different way: you add state variables to pages and components, wire interactions (sequences of actions triggered by a component, including custom code) and bind visibility or text to dynamic values, so a section appears only when a switch is on. According to Plasmic's interactions documentation, state is any data that may change in a UI. The Plasmic repository is MIT-licensed, except the platform folder, which is AGPL, and the code was updated in November 2026. On Plasmic's pricing page the Free plan costs $0 with 3 collaborators and unlimited projects, with a Plasmic badge on Plasmic-hosted sites; Starter costs $39 a month billed yearly. Choose it when your prototype should turn into the product.

4. Webstudio: data-driven website prototypes

Webstudio is an open-source visual website builder. Its Expression Editor binds variables and resources (data from a CMS or an API) to any field and runs logical expressions, for example to show an element only when CMS data exists. That makes it a good fit for prototyping content-heavy sites, directories and landing pages with real data rather than lorem ipsum. The Webstudio repository core is AGPL-3.0-or-later, while one optional animation package is proprietary; version 0.309.0 came out in October 2026. On Webstudio's pricing page the Free plan includes a wstd.io subdomain, unlimited projects and pages and project export; Pro costs $15 a month billed yearly.

5. Appsmith: working prototypes of data-heavy apps

Axure's repeater widget is popular for prototyping dashboards and admin screens with sortable tables. If that is your use case, a working app can be faster than a simulated one. Appsmith is an open-source low-code platform: you drag widgets such as tables and forms onto a page, connect them to a database, SaaS tool or REST or GraphQL API, and write the business logic in JavaScript. The Appsmith repository is Apache-2.0 licensed, installs with Docker, Kubernetes or an AWS image, and version 2.6.0 came out in October 2026. On Appsmith's pricing page the Free plan costs $0 for up to 5 users in the cloud, and the open-source Community edition is free to self-host. For more tools of this type, see our open-source Retool alternatives.

6. Pencil Project: offline mock-ups with clickable page links

Pencil Project is a free desktop prototyping tool for Windows, macOS and Linux with stencils for desktop, web, Android and iOS screens, plus flowchart shapes and connectors. You can link elements to other pages in the same document, and when you export to a web page those links become HTML links, so you get a simple clickable mock-up. It also exports to PDF and OpenOffice/LibreOffice documents, which helps with Axure-style specification handouts. Pencil has no conditions or variables. Version 4.0.0 was released on 23 October 2026, after 3.1.1 on 1 January 2023, and adds a built-in MCP server so AI assistants can create and edit mock-ups. The Pencil repository is GPL-2.0. For other options of this kind, see our open-source Pencil Project alternatives.

7. Storybook: living specs instead of static documentation

Axure's notes and specifications tell developers how each screen should behave. Once a team writes code, Storybook can take over that job: it is an open-source, free workshop for building, testing and documenting UI components and pages in isolation. Each story saves a component in a key state (empty, error, loading), Autodocs turns the stories into living documentation, and the Controls panel lets designers and product managers change a component's inputs without code. Interaction, visual and accessibility tests run on the same stories. The Storybook repository is MIT-licensed, and version 10.6.5 came out in October 2026.

8. draw.io: user flow diagrams next to the prototype

Axure is also used for flow diagrams next to the prototype. draw.io covers that part: it is a free diagram editor that runs in the browser or as a desktop app, free forever and without sign-up, with flowchart and mock-up shape libraries. According to its GitHub README, the code is licensed under Apache 2.0, this version does not support real-time collaborative editing, and the team does not accept pull requests. Release 32.6.9 came out in October 2026. If you need real-time co-editing, compare our open-source draw.io alternatives.

Axure Alternatives That Are Not Open Source, Abandoned or Changed

The 2025 version of this article mixed open-source tools with free and paid apps. These no longer belong on an open-source Axure shortlist:
  • Figma, Mockplus, Whimsical, Wireframe.cc and Miro: popular design and whiteboard tools with free or paid plans, but none of them is open source. If you just need a free tool, see our free Adobe XD alternatives.
  • Lunacy and Origami Studio: free design and prototyping apps from Icons8 and Meta, but their code is not open source either.
  • Akira: an open-source Linux UI design app whose README still calls it early development and not ready for production; its last release is an alpha from August 2021.
  • Alva: an open-source tool for prototypes built from real code components; its repository was archived by its owner in October 2023 and the last commit dates from July 2019.
  • Quant-UX: still active, but the old link pointed to the wrong GitHub page; the project lives in the KlausSchaefers/quant-ux repository.
  • Pencil Project: looked stalled for years and came back with version 4.0.0 in October 2026, so it stays on the list.

Which Open-Source Axure Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You need conditional flows and variables in a design prototype: Quant-UX.
  • You want to test that prototype with real users: Quant-UX as well, with its recordings, heatmaps and A/B tests.
  • Your team designs screens together and hands them to developers: Penpot, with annotations and the Inspect tab.
  • The prototype should grow into the real website or app: Webstudio for content sites, Plasmic for apps on your own code.
  • You prototype dashboards, admin panels or internal tools with real data: Appsmith.
  • You work alone and offline: Pencil Project.
  • You need specs developers keep up to date: Storybook, once the components exist in code.
  • You need user flow diagrams: draw.io.

How Founders Use Open-Source Prototyping Tools

A startup rarely needs Axure's full power on day one. Start with the business on one page in the F/MS Lean Canvas tool, sketch the user journey on a whiteboard (our open-source Miro alternatives cover that) and wireframe the key screens. Then build one logic-rich prototype of the flow that decides whether customers pay, such as sign-up or checkout, in Quant-UX, and test it with five to ten real users before anyone writes production code. If you used InVision for this in the past, our open-source InVision alternatives explain where its prototypes and design system pages went.
If you would rather let AI produce the first working version, compare the best AI prototyping tools and keep Penpot or Storybook as the source of truth for design decisions. Once the product is live, turn what you learned from user tests into articles with the F/MS AI SEO Tool so customers find you in Google and AI assistants.
