Open-Source GIMP Alternatives (2027): 10 Free Image Editors for Painting, Quick Edits, Raw Photos, Vector and Pixel Art

Open-Source GIMP Alternatives: Free Image Editors That Do One Job Better Than GIMP

GIMP is already free and open source, so people who look for an open-source GIMP alternative usually want something more specific: a better painting tool, a simpler editor for quick fixes, a proper raw photo developer, a photo library, vector graphics or pixel art. This guide lists the open-source editors that do one of those jobs differently or better than GIMP. We checked each project's licence, latest release and main features on its official website and repository in October 2026, and we list separately the tools from the old version of this article that are not open source or are no longer developed.
Quick answer: for digital painting and animation, use Krita; for quick edits with a simple interface, use Pinta or LazPaint; for raw photos, use darktable or RawTherapee; to organise a photo library, use digiKam; for logos and vector graphics, use Inkscape; for pixel art and game sprites, use Pixelorama. If you want GIMP with Photoshop-style shortcuts, install PhotoGIMP on top of GIMP 3.

GIMP in 2027: Is It Still Worth Using?

Yes. GIMP is free software under the GNU GPL v3 and runs on Linux, macOS and Windows. Version 3.2.6 was released on 10 September 2026. The 3.x series brought non-destructive filters, and the GIMP 3.2 release notes add two new non-destructive layer types: link layers, which update when the linked file changes (similar to linked Smart Objects in Photoshop), and vector layers made with the Path tool. If GIMP's menus are what put you off, PhotoGIMP (GPL-3.0) is a patch for GIMP 3 that rearranges tools and shortcuts for Photoshop users; version 3.1 came out in July 2026. The tools below make sense when GIMP is the wrong shape for your job, not because it is outdated.

The Best Open-Source GIMP Alternatives in 2027

1. Krita: better than GIMP for digital painting and animation

Krita describes itself as a professional, free and open-source painting program made by artists, and it is licensed under the GNU GPL. Where GIMP is built around photo retouching, Krita is built around the brush: it has more than nine brush engines with detailed settings, a wrap-around mode for seamless textures, a resource manager for brush packs, a 2D animation workspace with video export, HDR painting and Python scripting. It loads and saves PSD files. Krita 5.3.4 and 6.0.4 were announced on 15 September 2026, with downloads for Windows, macOS and Linux.

2. Pinta: simpler than GIMP for quick edits

Pinta is a free, open-source drawing and image editing program for Linux, Mac, Windows and BSD. Its README describes it as a GTK clone of Paint.NET 3.0, and its own code is under the MIT licence. You get the everyday tools (select, crop, rotate, resize, clone, recolour, magic wand), effects and adjustments with live previews, and unlimited undo, without GIMP's long menus. Version 3.1.2 came out in April 2026. Choose it when you need to crop a screenshot or fix a product photo in two minutes.

3. LazPaint: a light editor with raster and vector layers

LazPaint is a free, cross-platform image editor with raster and vector layers, written in Lazarus (Free Pascal). Its GitHub README compares it to PaintBrush and Paint.NET, and the source code is GPL-3.0. There are installers, portable versions and archives for Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD and OpenBSD. The latest release, 7.3, was published in May 2025, and code changes continued into October 2026. It suits older or low-power computers where GIMP feels heavy.

4. Photoflare CE: fast basic editing

Photoflare aims at quick, simple editing. It now comes in three editions: Photoflare CE is the open-source, community-driven desktop editor with basic filters and adjustments; Photoflare Lens is a free raw photo developer; and Photoflare Studio is a commercial edition with layers and advanced brushes. Only CE is open source (GPL-3.0 on GitHub), and CE has no layers, so it is for fast single-image fixes rather than GIMP-style compositions. CE version 1.7.5 was released in October 2026, with downloads for Windows, Linux and Apple silicon Macs.

5. darktable: a raw photo workflow GIMP does not have

darktable is an open-source photography workflow application and raw developer: a digital lighttable to sort photos and a darkroom to develop them non-destructively. It is released under the GPL 3.0. GIMP can open raw files only by handing them to a raw developer such as darktable or RawTherapee, so photographers often use darktable first and GIMP only for pixel retouching. Version 5.6.2 was released on 4 October 2026.

6. RawTherapee: precise raw development

RawTherapee is a free, cross-platform raw photo processing program under the GPLv3. It uses a non-destructive, 32-bit floating-point engine with modern demosaicing and detailed colour and sharpening tools, and it has no layers: you develop the photo, then retouch in GIMP or Krita if needed. Version 5.13 was released on 26 July 2026 for Linux, Windows (including ARM64) and macOS.

7. digiKam: organise thousands of photos

digiKam is an open-source photo manager from the KDE community for Linux, Windows and macOS. It imports, tags and searches large photo collections, edits metadata, offers AI metadata enrichment and, since an August 2026 update, natural-language search. It has a basic editor and batch tools, so many people keep their library in digiKam and open single images in GIMP for detailed work. Version 9.1.0 was released on 7 June 2026.

8. Inkscape: vector graphics, which GIMP is not built for

Inkscape is the open-source vector editor for logos, icons, illustrations and SVG files, licensed under the GPL. GIMP edits pixels; Inkscape edits shapes that scale to any size without losing quality, so it is the right tool for a logo or a print-ready social media template. The latest release, 1.4.4, was tagged on 5 May 2026 in Inkscape's official GitLab repository. If Inkscape itself is not right for you, see our open-source Inkscape alternatives.

9. Graphite: procedural, non-destructive design (alpha)

Graphite calls itself a free, open-source vector graphics editor and animation engine, available in alpha. It combines layer-based compositing with node-based generative design, so every step stays editable, and it currently runs as a lightweight offline web app focused on procedural vector graphics. Its code is Apache-2.0, and the current stable channel is the Alpha 4 release series (July 2026). Raster editing is still on its roadmap, so treat it as a tool to watch rather than a GIMP replacement today.

10. Pixelorama: pixel art and game sprites

Pixelorama is an open-source pixel art multitool (MIT licence) for Windows, Linux, macOS and the web. It has frame-by-frame animation with onion skinning, pixel-perfect drawing and shading tools, palettes, a layer system with non-destructive effects, and tilemap layers for games, and it exports spritesheets, GIFs and videos. It also imports animations from Aseprite, Photoshop and Krita. Version 1.2.3 was released in September 2026.

GIMP Alternatives That Are Not Open Source, Changed or Discontinued

The 2025 version of this article listed some tools that do not belong on an open-source list, and some projects have changed since:
  • Paint.NET: free for Windows, but its licence says you may not modify it or create derivative works, so it is freeware, not open source. Pinta is the open-source editor modelled on it.
  • Photopea and Pixlr: free or freemium web editors, but their code is not open source.
  • Lunacy: a free design tool from Icons8 for UI work, also closed source and not a GIMP-style image editor.
  • Seashore (macOS): still open source (GPL-2.0), but its last release, 3.36, dates from June 2024. Its author says work on it is being deprioritised in favour of Seahorse, a new low-cost commercial app; Seashore stays free with critical fixes.
  • MyPaint: still open source (GPL-2.0) and its code still gets commits, but there has been no new release since 2.0.1 in May 2020. For painting, Krita is the safer choice.
  • Glimpse: a GIMP fork that, according to It's FOSS, paused development in May 2021. Its GitHub repository is gone and its old domain now redirects to an unrelated page, so do not download installers that use its name.
