Open-Source Zoho Desk Alternatives (2027): 8 Self-Hosted Help Desks With AI Replies, Ticket Triage and Knowledge Base Answers Instead of Zia

Open-source Zoho Desk alternatives 2027: 8 self-hosted help desks with AI

Open-Source Zoho Desk Alternatives: Self-Hosted Help Desks With AI Replies, Ticket Triage and Knowledge Base Answers

Zoho Desk is a popular, low-cost help desk, and its built-in assistant Zia drafts replies, tags and routes tickets, reads customer sentiment and answers customers from your knowledge base. The catch is that Zia's main features sit in the higher editions, your ticket history lives in Zoho's cloud, and you use the AI models Zoho picks or connects for you. If you want to own your support data and choose your own AI model, including one that runs on your own server, an open-source help desk can replace Zoho Desk. We checked every tool below on its official website, documentation and GitHub in November 2026, with one question in mind: which Zia features does it really match, and is that AI part open source too?
Quick answer: the closest open-source Zoho Desk replacement with AI is Zammad (AI reply help, ticket summaries and AI agents, with the model of your choice). For an AI bot that answers customers from your knowledge base, try Libredesk; for a light shared inbox with a free AI module, FreeScout; for AI drafts that run fully offline, OTOBO; and for sentiment detection and AI routing, Request Tracker. Watch out for Chatwoot: the help desk is open source, but its Captain AI is not.

What Zoho Desk and Zia Cost in 2027

To know what you are replacing: the Zoho Desk pricing page (default view, checked November 2026; we were shown the Dutch page with euro prices, per user per month, billed annually) lists Express at €7, with email, social media and web form tickets, AI agents and generative AI if you bring your own API key. Standard costs €14 and adds the answer bot and a knowledge base. Zia AI starts on Professional at €23, together with telephony and blueprints, and Enterprise costs €40 with live chat through Zoho SalesIQ and guided conversations. A free edition covers three users with simple email ticketing, and the paid editions come with a 15-day trial. For a team of five on Professional, that is €115 a month.
On its Zia page, Zoho lists what the AI does: an Answer Bot that replies to customers from your knowledge base, a writing assistant and reply editor, sentiment-based routing, automatic tags, ticket summaries, field predictions that fill in category and issue type, alerts on unusual ticket activity, Zia agents and a ChatGPT integration, all at no extra cost on the editions that include Zia. That is the list we checked each open-source tool against.

The Best Open-Source Zoho Desk Alternatives With AI in 2027

1. Zammad: the closest Zoho Desk replacement, with AI you control

Zammad is an AGPL-3.0 help desk that brings email, web forms, chat, phone, SMS, Telegram and social channels into one ticket view, with SLAs, macros, triggers, reporting and a knowledge base, much like Zoho Desk Professional. Its AI features cover three Zia jobs: the AI Writing Assistant rewrites, shortens, expands and translates replies; AI Ticket Summary turns long threads into a short overview; and AI Agents do routine ticket work from triggers, scheduled jobs or macros. The AI provider settings accept Zammad's own AI service, OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure AI, Mistral AI, any OpenAI-compatible server or Ollama on your own hardware, and the knowledge base can use embeddings for semantic search. Self-hosting is free; hosted plans cost €7 (up to 5 agents), €16 or €25 per agent per month billed yearly, and optional AI is billed at €0.03 per AI call. Version 7.2.2 came out in October 2026.

2. Libredesk: a free help desk with an AI bot that answers from your knowledge base

Libredesk is the newest tool on this list and the closest open-source match for Zia's Answer Bot. It is a self-hosted support desk (one binary plus PostgreSQL and Redis) with live chat, email and WhatsApp in one inbox, a multilingual help centre, SLAs, macros and CSAT surveys. Its website says every feature is included and there are no paid tiers. According to the v2.6.0 release notes, the AI features (still marked beta) work with any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, including a local one: an AI assistant answers conversations from your knowledge base and hands off to a person when it cannot help, a copilot drafts replies and summarises chats for agents, and Libredesk proposes new knowledge snippets from resolved conversations for you to approve. The code is AGPL-3.0, and version 2.9.2 came out on 31 October 2026.

3. FreeScout: a light shared inbox with a free AI module

FreeScout is an AGPL-3.0 help desk and shared mailbox built with PHP and Laravel, so it runs even on cheap shared hosting, with unlimited agents, mailboxes and tickets. Its AI Integration module is free and AGPL-3.0 too: it drafts replies, summarises conversations and makes your wording more professional, with 16 provider options from OpenAI, Gemini, Claude, Mistral and DeepSeek to local models in Ollama or LM Studio. It has no answer bot or AI triage, and the customer-facing knowledge base is a paid module, so FreeScout suits a small team that mostly wants faster replies. Version 1.8.249 came out on 31 October 2026.

4. OTOBO: AI reply drafts that can run fully offline

OTOBO is a GPL-3.0 service management platform, originally forked from OTRS, used for customer service, IT, HR and facilities teams. Its OTOBO AI drafts a reply for each new request in the queues where you switch it on, using past tickets, FAQ articles and documents you add, and nothing goes out until an agent approves it. A chat assistant in each ticket summarises the case, finds similar tickets and drafts FAQ texts. Rother OSS, the company behind OTOBO, says the AI is open source and licence-free, works with any OpenAI-compatible model and can run completely offline; automatic classification and prioritisation are not available yet. Setup help needs a paid service contract, and a managed model hosted in Germany is offered with its Enterprise support. The 11.1.1 release was tagged on GitHub in October 2026. Znuny, the other maintained OTRS fork (GPL-3.0, 7.3.8 in October 2026), lists no AI features on its website.

5. Request Tracker: sentiment detection and AI routing

Request Tracker (RT) is a GPL-2.0 ticketing system for teams with complex queues, permissions and workflows. Its AI extension comes closest to Zia's triage features: it suggests how to finish a reply as you type, summarises long threads, flags tickets where the customer sounds frustrated, suggests the right queue, owner and priority for new tickets, and finds similar resolved tickets. The extension is published on CPAN as RT::Extension::AI under GPL-2.0, and you bring your own API key or a self-hosted model. An RT MCP Server lets you work with tickets from Claude or other AI assistants through RT's own API. RT 6.0.4 came out on 29 October 2026; expect a steeper setup than Zammad or FreeScout.

6. Chatwoot: open-source live chat, but the AI is not open source

Chatwoot puts website live chat, email, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Telegram and SMS into one inbox and is a strong replacement for Zoho Desk plus SalesIQ. Its AI, Captain, can answer customers from your help centre and documents, suggest FAQs and help agents. But the Chatwoot licence is MIT only outside the enterprise folder, and Captain's code sits inside it under the Chatwoot Enterprise licence, so the AI part is not open source. On the self-hosted plans page Captain is not included in the free Community Edition; it comes with Premium Support ($19 per agent per month) and Enterprise ($99). In the cloud, the free Hacker plan has 2 agents and 500 conversations a month without Captain, and paid plans start at $19 per agent per month with 300 Captain credits. Version 4.19.1 came out in October 2026.

7. Frappe Helpdesk: a Zoho One-style open-source suite

Many teams choose Zoho Desk because it works with Zoho CRM and the rest of Zoho One. The closest open-source answer is the Frappe stack: Frappe Helpdesk (AGPL-3.0) turns email into tickets with SLAs, round-robin assignment, saved replies, customer ratings and a public knowledge base, with unlimited agents and customer sync with ERPNext. Next to it, Frappe CRM (AGPL-3.0, version 1.91.1 on 2 November 2026) covers leads and deals. You self-host both for free or pay for hosting on Frappe Cloud, from $5 a month with a 14-day trial. The Helpdesk page lists no AI features, so this is the pick for owning your whole customer stack rather than for Zia-style AI. Helpdesk 1.31.1 came out in October 2026.

8. osTicket: plain email ticketing, no AI

osTicket is one of the oldest open-source ticketing systems (GPL-2.0): email, web forms and API calls become tickets with help topics, filters, SLAs, a customer portal and a knowledge base. It has no AI features, but it is simple, stable and a good match for Zoho Desk's free edition if all you need is email ticketing for a small team. Version 1.18.4 came out in June 2026.

How to Move Your Data Out of Zoho Desk

None of the open-source tools above has a one-click Zoho Desk importer, so plan the move yourself. According to Zoho's guide to backing up your help desk data, only the account's primary contact can create a backup, under Setup, Data Administration, Data Backup. You get one ZIP file of CSV files covering tickets with threads, comments and time entries, contacts, accounts, activities, products, knowledge base articles, agents, teams and departments; forum topics are not included. Attachments come only as secure download links that you fetch through the API, the backup is capped at 10 million records, and the download link expires after 7 days.

Zoho Desk Alternatives That Are Abandoned, Changed or Not Open Source

The 2025 version of this article listed tools that no longer belong on an open-source, AI-ready shortlist:
  • Helpy: abandoned. Its last release (2.8.0) is from February 2020 and its last code change from October 2021.
  • Peppermint: the GitHub repository is archived, and the last release (0.5.5) is from November 2024.
  • Hesk: free to download, but not open-source software; a paid licence removes its branding.
  • Faveo Helpdesk: the Community Edition on GitHub is OSL-3.0 and still updated, but the AI agent, bot and assistant on Faveo's website are sold with Faveo Cloud and Faveo Self Hosted.
  • Rocket.Chat: an open-source team chat platform (MIT outside its enterprise folders), not a help desk, so it was removed from the list.
  • Laudspeaker: a customer-journey messaging tool, not a help desk; its last release is from June 2024, and the old article linked to dev.to instead of the project.
  • UVdesk: still open source (OSL-3.0) and updated, but its last tagged release is from September 2025 and it lists no AI features.
  • Chatwoot: kept on the list, but its Captain AI is not open source (see above).

How Founders Use an Open-Source Help Desk With AI

For an early-stage startup, support tickets are customer research. Start with one shared inbox, tag every ticket by topic and review the tags each week; the questions that come back again and again become your first knowledge base articles, and those articles are what an AI bot answers from. Switch on AI drafts only after you have 20 or 30 good articles, and keep a person approving replies at first. If you want to run the model yourself, our open-source ChatGPT alternatives cover local models you can plug into Zammad, FreeScout or OTOBO, and our list of AI agents for startup founders shows where else agents save time.

Not as one product, but the pieces exist: Zammad and FreeScout draft and summarise replies, Request Tracker detects sentiment and suggests routing, and Libredesk's AI assistant answers customers from your knowledge base.

Which open-source help desk has an AI bot that answers from the knowledge base?

Libredesk. Its AI assistant (beta when we checked) answers conversations from your knowledge base snippets and hands off to a person when it cannot help. OTOBO drafts knowledge-based replies for agents to approve.

No. Chatwoot's core is MIT-licensed, but Captain's code sits in the enterprise folder under the Chatwoot Enterprise licence, and it is not included in the free self-hosted Community Edition.

Yes. Zammad and FreeScout support Ollama, Libredesk and OTOBO work with any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, and Request Tracker's AI extension accepts self-hosted models, so ticket data can stay on your servers.
