Open-Source Zendesk Alternatives (2027): 10 Self-Hosted Help Desks With Ticketing, Knowledge Base and Zendesk Migration

Open-source Zendesk alternatives 2027: 10 self-hosted help desks with ticketing and knowledge base

Open-Source Zendesk Alternatives: Self-Hosted Help Desks With Ticketing, a Knowledge Base and a Way to Move Your Tickets

Zendesk is the default help desk for many growing companies, but you pay per agent, the AI agents are billed per resolution on top, and your ticket history lives on someone else's servers. If you want to own your support data, an open-source help desk can replace the parts of Zendesk Suite most startups actually use: email ticketing, a shared team view, automations and a help centre for customers. We checked every tool below on its official website, documentation and GitHub in October 2026: the exact licence, the latest release, whether it has a knowledge base, and whether there is an official way to bring your tickets over from Zendesk. Abandoned or non-open-source picks from older lists are covered separately at the end.
Quick answer: the closest open-source replacement for Zendesk Suite is Zammad, and it is the only one with a built-in Zendesk migrator; for a light shared inbox that runs on cheap hosting, use FreeScout; for plain email ticketing with a knowledge base, use osTicket; for unlimited agents on a modern interface, use Frappe Helpdesk; and if most of your Zendesk traffic is messaging and live chat, use Chatwoot.

What Zendesk Suite Costs in 2027

To know what you are replacing: the Zendesk pricing page (checked October 2026; we were shown the euro prices for Europe) lists Support Team, which covers email ticketing, routing, macros and triggers, at €19 per agent per month billed annually. Suite Team, which adds AI agents, an AI knowledge base, messaging, live chat and voice, costs €55, Suite Professional €115, and Suite Enterprise is priced on request. AI agents are included in every plan but billed per automated resolution, and Copilot, the AI assistant for agents, is an add-on at €50 per agent per month. There is a 14-day free trial, and the pricing page offers early-stage startups a six-month trial of Zendesk Suite for up to 50 agents through its Startups programme. For a team of five on Suite Team, that is €275 a month before automated resolutions. The tools below can be self-hosted for free; you pay for the server and your own time instead.

The 10 Best Open-Source Zendesk Alternatives in 2027

1. Zammad: the closest Zendesk Suite replacement, with a built-in migrator

Zammad is an AGPL-3.0 help desk that puts email, web forms, chat, phone, SMS, Telegram and social channels into one ticket view, with SLAs, macros, triggers, reporting and a knowledge base. It is the only tool here with an official Zendesk importer: the Zammad migration guide connects with your Zendesk URL, an admin email and an API token, and moves groups, organisations, users and tickets, either through a browser wizard after installation or from the console for large accounts. Read the limits first: only one full run (no differential migration), user passwords are not migrated, your Zendesk plan must include API access, and API rate limits decide how long it takes. Since version 7.0 Zammad also has AI: a writing assistant, ticket summaries and AI agents, with the model of your choice. Self-hosting is free; hosted plans start at €7 per agent per month (up to 5 agents), and the knowledge base and AI options start on the Professional plan at €16 (both billed yearly). Version 7.2.2 was released in October 2026.

2. FreeScout: a lightweight shared inbox that calls itself a Zendesk alternative

FreeScout describes itself as a free self-hosted Zendesk and Help Scout alternative. It is an AGPL-3.0 help desk and shared mailbox built with PHP and Laravel, so it even runs on cheap shared hosting, with unlimited agents, tickets and mailboxes, and channels such as email, WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook and live chat. The core is free; extra features are modules, and the Knowledge Base module for a customer self-service help centre is a paid lifetime licence per installation, while the AI Integration module is free. There is no built-in Zendesk importer: FreeScout's migration guide points to the paid Help Desk Migration service, which needs FreeScout's API and Webhooks module, and warns that original ticket numbers cannot be kept. Version 1.8.248 came out in October 2026.

3. osTicket: classic email ticketing with a knowledge base

osTicket is one of the oldest open-source ticketing systems (GPL-2.0). It turns email, web forms and API calls into tickets, with help topics, filters, SLAs, a customer portal and a knowledge base for self-service. It is free to self-host, and the same company runs a paid cloud version. It has no AI features and no Zendesk importer, but it is simple to install and very stable. Version 1.18.4 came out in June 2026, and the team has announced osTicket 2.0, a rebuild from the ground up with a new interface and an API-first design; it had no release date when we checked.

4. Frappe Helpdesk: unlimited agents, pay only for hosting

Frappe Helpdesk is a modern AGPL-3.0 help desk built on the Frappe Framework, the stack behind ERPNext. It turns your support email into tickets with owners, SLAs, saved replies and custom fields, and gives customers a public knowledge base and a portal to track their tickets. It does not charge per agent: you self-host it for free or pay for hosting on Frappe Cloud, from $5 a month with a 14-day free trial. Its site lists no AI features and no Zendesk importer. Version 1.31.0 was released in October 2026.

5. Request Tracker: deep workflows and open-source AI

Request Tracker (RT) is a GPL-licensed ticketing system for teams that need custom queues, permissions and workflows, such as IT, security or operations. Its built-in Articles feature stores stock answers and FAQs that agents insert into replies. The AI extension for RT is open source and adds suggested replies, ticket summaries, sentiment detection and smart routing; you bring your own AI engine, and an RT MCP server lets you work with tickets from Claude or other assistants. Version 6.0.3 came out in May 2026. Expect a steeper setup than the tools above.

6. Chatwoot: if your Zendesk is mostly messaging and live chat

Chatwoot calls itself an open-source alternative to Intercom and Zendesk and is built around conversations: website live chat, email, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Telegram, SMS and voice in one inbox, plus a help centre. Its core code is MIT-licensed, while an enterprise folder has its own licence. Chatwoot's Zendesk migration guide covers removing the Zendesk widget, importing contacts from a CSV export and moving past conversations through its API, so the ticket history needs a script. In the cloud, the free Hacker plan covers 2 agents and 500 conversations a month with live chat only and no help centre; the Startups plan at $19 per agent per month adds the help centre and 300 Captain AI credits. The self-hosted Community Edition is free. Version 4.19.1 came out in October 2026.

7. Libredesk: a free inbox with a help centre and built-in AI

Libredesk is a newer AGPL-3.0 support desk that runs as a single binary. It brings email, a website live chat widget and WhatsApp into one shared inbox and publishes a searchable, multilingual help centre. Its AI assistant answers live chat questions from your knowledge base and hands over to a person, and an agent copilot drafts replies and summarises conversations. Its website says every feature is included and there are no paid tiers; there is no Zendesk importer. Version 2.9.0 came out in October 2026.

8. UVdesk: a help desk for online shops

UVdesk offers an open-source PHP help desk (OSL-3.0) next to its paid SaaS. The open-source edition includes ticketing, a knowledge base and FAQ system with articles, categories and folders, and apps that pull order details from e-commerce platforms. Development is slower than the others: its last tagged release, 1.1.8, dates from September 2025, although the code is still being updated.

9. Znuny: the long-term-support fork of OTRS

Znuny continues the former ((OTRS)) Community Edition under GPL-3.0, with a long-term-support line (6.5.26) and a feature line (7.3.8), both released in October 2026. A separate FAQ add-on works as its knowledge base. It is a heavyweight, highly configurable ticket system for IT service desks and teams leaving OTRS, not Zendesk; there is no Zendesk importer.

10. OTOBO: open-source service management

OTOBO is another OTRS-derived platform (GPL-3.0) for IT, customer service, HR and facility teams, and its maker offers a migration service from OTRS. An official FAQ package adds a knowledge base with an approval workflow for new articles. Its website promotes OTOBO 11.1 as a beta, and a new 11.1.1 tag appeared on GitHub on 26 October 2026. Like Znuny, it is best for teams with a technical administrator.

How to Move Your Tickets and Help Centre Out of Zendesk

Switching help desks is mostly a data project. Before you cancel Zendesk, export what you need while your plan still has API access, and test the move on a copy first:
Five steps to move from Zendesk to an open-source help desk: API token, test import, rules, help centre articles, channels
Leaving Zendesk in 5 steps
  • Tickets, users and organisations: Zammad imports them directly. Zammad's guide says to create the API token with a full administrator account, because a less privileged token breaks the migration, and to run a test import to see how long it takes.
  • Contacts and conversations into Chatwoot: import contacts from a CSV export and move conversations through Chatwoot's API.
  • Into FreeScout and most others: use a paid migration service or your own script against the Zendesk API. Old ticket numbers will change.
  • Help centre articles: none of the official guides above cover Zendesk help centre articles, so copy or script them into your new knowledge base separately, and redirect the old article URLs if customers find them in Google.
  • Rules and channels: triggers, macros, views and SLAs have to be rebuilt by hand. Then forward your support address to the new tool, replace the Zendesk chat widget, and ask users to reset their passwords (Zammad does not migrate them).

Zendesk Alternatives That Are Discontinued or No Longer Fit

The 2025 version of this article recommended a few tools that we no longer put on an open-source Zendesk shortlist:
  • Helpy: abandoned. Its last release (2.8.0) is from February 2020 and the last code change from October 2021. Use Zammad or FreeScout instead.
  • Peppermint: its GitHub repository is now archived (read-only), and the last release, 0.5.5, came out in November 2024. Do not start a new help desk on it.
  • Hesk: still free to download and self-host, but it is not open-source software: a paid licence ($49.99 one-off for one installation when we checked) removes the "Powered by Hesk" branding, and Hesk Cloud is a paid service.
  • SuiteCRM: still maintained (8.10.2 came out in July 2026) and open source (AGPL-3.0), but it is a CRM with case management, not a help desk. We moved it out of this list; see our open-source Freshdesk alternatives if you want it compared with help desks.

Which Open-Source Zendesk Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You want the closest Zendesk Suite replacement and your old tickets with you: Zammad, self-hosted or on its hosted plans.
  • You are a solo founder or a team of two or three on email: FreeScout on cheap hosting, or osTicket if you want a knowledge base without paid modules.
  • You want to add your whole team without per-agent fees: Frappe Helpdesk or FreeScout.
  • Your customers mostly message you on chat, WhatsApp or Instagram: Chatwoot, or Libredesk if you want AI and a help centre with no paid tier.
  • You need complex workflows, permissions or an AI you host yourself: Request Tracker.
  • You run an IT or internal service desk: Znuny or OTOBO.

How Founders Use an Open-Source Help Desk

For an early-stage startup, support is also customer research: every ticket shows what confuses people and what they would pay for. Start with one shared inbox, tag every ticket by topic and review the tags weekly; our guide to customer support strategies for startups covers the basics. Write your top ten answers into the knowledge base before you add an AI agent, because every AI feature above answers from that content; an SEO FAQ answer bot turns the same support docs into pages people can find. If customers expect instant replies, add chat (see the benefits of live chat for customer service), keep customer history in one of the CRM tools for startups, and see our wider list of customer support tools for startups.
Open source and free tools can replace much more of a startup's paid stack. We have also checked open-source Expensify alternatives for expenses, free Hootsuite alternatives for social media scheduling and free PaintShop Pro alternatives for image editing. Before you build anything, validate your startup idea with real customers, and turn your help centre answers into articles with the F/MS AI SEO Tool so customers find them in Google and AI assistants.

FAQ About Open-Source Zendesk Alternatives

What is the best open-source alternative to Zendesk?

Zammad is the closest match to Zendesk Suite: email, chat, phone and social channels in one ticket view, a knowledge base, SLAs, AI features and an official Zendesk migrator. FreeScout is the simplest choice for small teams.

Can I migrate my tickets from Zendesk to an open-source help desk?

Yes. Zammad has a built-in Zendesk importer for groups, organisations, users and tickets. Chatwoot documents a contact import and an API for conversations, and FreeScout points to a paid migration service. For the other tools you need a script or a migration service.

Does Zammad import Zendesk help centre articles?

Zammad's Zendesk migration guide lists groups, organisations, users and tickets and does not mention help centre articles, so plan to move your articles separately.

Which open-source help desk has a knowledge base?

Zammad, osTicket, Frappe Helpdesk, UVdesk and Libredesk include one. Request Tracker has Articles for stock answers, Znuny and OTOBO use FAQ add-ons, FreeScout sells a Knowledge Base module, and Chatwoot's cloud help centre starts on paid plans.

How much does Zendesk cost in 2027?

When we checked in October 2026, Zendesk's European pricing page listed Support Team at €19, Suite Team at €55 and Suite Professional at €115 per agent per month billed annually, with AI agents billed per automated resolution and Copilot at €50 per agent per month.

Is FreeScout really free?

The FreeScout core is free and open source (AGPL-3.0) with unlimited agents. Some modules are paid, including the Knowledge Base module, while the AI Integration module is free.

Is Peppermint still maintained?

No. Its GitHub repository is archived and the last release, 0.5.5, came out in November 2024. Helpy is also abandoned, with its last release in February 2020.

Is Hesk open source?

No. Hesk is free to download and self-host, but it is proprietary software; a paid licence removes its branding.

Which open-source help desk is easiest to install?

FreeScout and osTicket run on ordinary PHP and MySQL hosting, and Libredesk ships as a single binary. Zammad, Request Tracker, Znuny and OTOBO need more server work.
