Aachen Startups to Watch in 2027: Verified RWTH Spin-offs in Chips, Batteries, Health and AI

Aachen is a small city on the German border with Belgium and the Netherlands, but it has one of Europe's largest technical universities, RWTH Aachen, and a long list of companies that grew out of its labs. That is why the Aachen startups worth watching are mostly deep tech: graphene photonics for chips, battery analytics, battery recycling, battery storage, intensive care software and medical devices. The 2026 version of this article listed ten names. When we checked them, only three could be confirmed as Aachen companies, one turned out to be based in Düsseldorf, and six could not be found anywhere outside a third-party list. For this 2027 edition we started again: in October 2026 we checked each company on its own website or in its own press release to confirm that it still operates, that its address is in Aachen, what it sells and what it publishes about its funding. What happened to the old names is listed near the end.
Quick answer: the Aachen startups to watch in 2027 are Black Semiconductor (graphene photonics that connect chips with light), ACCURE (battery analytics), emteria (custom Android for devices), cylib (battery recycling), Voltfang (battery storage for companies), Clinomic (intensive care software), amber (business AI search), Protembis (stroke protection during heart valve procedures) and FibreCoat (metal-coated fibres). Black Semiconductor has the biggest numbers: a €228.7 million public grant and €25.7 million of private money in 2024. For support, start with the Collective Incubator, RWTH Innovation and the GründerRegion Aachen.

Why Aachen Matters for Founders in 2027

Aachen's startup scene is built around its universities. The Collective Incubator, the co-working and maker space for FH Aachen and RWTH Aachen, has more than 4,000 square metres of space and counts 6,638 registered students and researchers, 396 start-ups, 172 student initiatives and 35 corporate partners. In August 2026 it reported that Aachen ranks fourth in Germany for new startups per capita, with 18.3 new startups per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the Next Generation Report by Startup-Verband and startupdetector; it is the smallest city in that top four.
Many companies on this list share an origin: Voltfang was founded at RWTH Aachen, cylib was born there, Clinomic was started by intensive care doctors from RWTH Aachen University Hospital, and FibreCoat's idea came from a doctoral project at RWTH's Institute for Textile Technology. For the wider picture, compare our guide to deep tech cities in Europe and our city lists for Berlin, Eindhoven (an hour away by car) and Rotterdam.

Aachen startups to watch in 2027: what is confirmed

The Aachen Startups to Watch in 2027

1. Black Semiconductor: connecting chips with light

Black Semiconductor integrates graphene photonics directly onto electronic chips, so that chips compute with electricity and communicate with light. The goal is faster, cooler and more energy-efficient data transfer in data centres, using a process that fits into standard CMOS chip production. Its timeline says Daniel and Sebastian Schall established the company between 2020 and 2022 and raised €11.2 million in venture capital, including public funding, in a round co-led by Vsquared and Cambium. In 2024 it secured a €228.7 million grant under the EU's IPCEI programme and €25.7 million in private investment. In 2025 it moved into FabONE, a building with 15,000 square metres of fabrication space for a pilot line for 300 mm wafers; Exyte signed on to build the facility in November 2025, and construction began in March 2026. Its imprint gives Lilienthalstrasse 1 in Aachen as its address.
Lesson for founders: Black Semiconductor matched a hard technology with Europe's push for chip independence and won public money on a scale few startups ever see. If your technology serves a public goal, find the programme built for it.
Best for: founders in semiconductors, photonics and hardware for AI data centres.

2. ACCURE: software that keeps batteries safe and profitable

ACCURE Battery Intelligence sells a predictive battery analytics platform and engineering services to owners and operators of grid-scale battery storage. It helps them spot safety issues early, get more energy from their batteries, understand ageing and keep warranty cover. Its contact page lists ACCURE Battery Intelligence GmbH at Oranienstrasse 9 in Aachen and a US office in Boston; its careers page says the team works mostly remotely, with offices in Aachen, Cologne, London and Bozeman. On 11 February 2025, in a press release datelined Aachen and Boston, it announced a $16 million Series B led by Incharge Capital Partners, a joint venture of Porsche SE and DTCP, with existing investors including BlueBear Capital, HSBC Asset Management, Riverstone Holdings, Capnamic and 42CAP. The same release says its platform had supported more than six gigawatt-hours of energy storage systems and EV fleets.
Lesson for founders: ACCURE sells to the people who carry the financial risk of a battery: owners, lenders and insurers. Software that makes an expensive asset safer to finance is easier to price than software that is only nice to have.
Best for: founders in climate tech, energy software and industrial AI.

3. emteria: Android for machines, kiosks and medical devices

emteria lets companies build, customise and update their own Android operating system for devices such as digital signage, vending and ticketing machines, point-of-sale systems, infotainment screens and medical devices. Its platform delivers over-the-air updates from the browser and manages devices remotely, and its site offers a free start; its homepage announces Android 17 support for the Raspberry Pi 5. Its legal notice gives emteria GmbH at Oppenhoffallee 9-15 in Aachen. It does not publish funding figures on its site, so we cite none.
Lesson for founders: emteria turned a painful one-off engineering job, keeping a custom Android build secure for years, into a product with updates as a service. Look for the work your customers redo on every project.
Best for: founders in embedded software, IoT and B2B developer tools.

4. cylib: recycling batteries into new raw materials

cylib recycles end-of-life lithium-ion batteries and recovers lithium, graphite, nickel, cobalt and manganese for new battery production. It says it was born at RWTH Aachen University and founded in 2022, has more than 100 experts and has raised more than €90 million in equity and grants. After running a pilot line in Aachen, it broke ground on its first industrial plant at Currenta's Chempark Dormagen; in December 2025 it announced €63.4 million of grant funding to build an LFP battery recycling facility there, and in April 2026 it joined SIB:DE, a German industry and research consortium on sodium-ion batteries.
Lesson for founders: cylib combined private equity with large public grants to fund heavy industrial scale-up. In hardware, plan your non-dilutive money as carefully as your venture rounds.
Best for: founders in circular economy, battery materials and climate tech.

5. Voltfang: battery storage for companies

Voltfang plans, builds and runs battery storage systems for companies, utilities and large grid projects, with its own energy management system and trading of stored power. Its about page says it was founded in 2020 at RWTH Aachen, has more than 120 employees and more than 300 installed systems, and its press page lists €30 million of funding in total. Its address is Philipsstrasse 8 in Aachen. In September 2026 it announced a large battery storage system with 10 MW of power and 21 MWh of capacity on the former Philips site in Aachen, and a model in which private people can buy and own single storage units that Voltfang operates.
Lesson for founders: Voltfang moved from selling boxes to selling a full service: planning, building, financing and running the storage. Owning more of the customer's problem can make each sale bigger.
Best for: founders in energy, cleantech and B2B hardware.

It also offers chat, agents and projects. Its site offers a 30-day free trial with no credit card. Its imprint gives amber Tech GmbH at Jülicher Strasse 72a in Aachen, and its about page says the team has focused on making company information easy to find since 2020. It does not publish funding figures.
Lesson for founders: amber sells data protection and access control as part of the product, not as an afterthought. For European buyers, compliance can be a reason to choose you.
Best for: founders in AI software, SaaS for small and mid-sized companies and enterprise search.

8. Protembis: protecting the brain during heart valve procedures

Protembis develops ProtEmbo, a catheter-based filter that aims to protect the brain from debris during transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Its site says it was founded in 2013 and has its headquarters at Pauwelsstrasse 17 in Aachen. Its news page lists a €30 million financing in March 2024, the first patient enrolled in its US PROTEMBO IDE pivotal trial in April 2024, and €20 million of backing from the European Investment Bank in July 2024 to complete that trial.
Lesson for founders: medical devices take a long time and a lot of money to reach patients. Protembis shows how a startup can combine venture money and public lenders over more than a decade.
Best for: founders in medtech and life sciences.

9. FibreCoat: lighter fibres for defence, space and mobility

FibreCoat develops and produces glass and basalt fibres coated with aluminium or polypropylene, used for shielding electronics from interference, conducting heat, fire resistance and lightweight parts. Aachen Companies From the Old List That Changed or Could Not Be Verified

The 2026 version of this article listed ten names. Here is what we found when we checked each one in October 2026:
  • Kept: Black Semiconductor, ACCURE Battery Intelligence and emteria are still operating and based in Aachen. We corrected Black Semiconductor's founding date: the company says it was established between 2020 and 2022, not in 2018.
  • RIIICO: a real and active factory digitalisation startup, but not an Aachen company. EU-Startups described it as Düsseldorf-based when it raised €4.3 million in June 2025, and its own site shows registration at the Düsseldorf court, so we left it out.
  • InnoStat Analytics, Digiloop, QuantumX Technologies, GreenVolt Solar, NanoSys Sensors and HelioPrint Technologies: we found no official website, company register entry or press release for an Aachen company with any of these names. The old article's links for them all pointed to the same third-party list, so we removed them.
We also removed the old article's ranking claim that cited a third-party startup list, and replaced it with the Next Generation Report figure published by the Collective Incubator.
