Innsbruck Startups to Watch in 2027: Verified Companies in Quantum Computing, Energy, XR, Hotel Tech and Deep Tech

Innsbruck is a university city of the Alps, and much of its startup scene grows out of research labs. Quantum physics at the University of Innsbruck has produced two of the companies on this list, and engineers in the towns around the city build hardware for energy, lightweight parts and laboratory work. The 2026 version of this article listed ten names. When we checked them, none had a confirmed base in Innsbruck: several are Vienna companies, one is in Upper Austria, and others had no working website. For this 2027 edition we checked each company on its own website, legal notice or press page on 3 November 2026: that it still operates, that it is based in Innsbruck or the surrounding Tyrol region, what it sells and what it publishes about its funding. What happened to the old names is listed near the end.
Quick answer: the Innsbruck and Tyrol startups to watch in 2027 are ParityQC (quantum computer architecture), AQT (ion-trap quantum computers), REPS (electricity from road traffic), Hololight (XR streaming for industry), RateBoard (revenue AI for hotels), fibionic (bionic lightweight parts), Sinsoma (DNA analysis) and revitalyze (AI for construction tenders). REPS announced a $23.6 million round in May 2026 and fibionic a €3 million seed round in March 2026. For support, start with Startup.Tirol, the InnCubator and the University of Innsbruck's transfer office.

Why Innsbruck Matters for Founders in 2027

Innsbruck has a large university with a world-class quantum physics group, several colleges, and a regional agency that runs startup programmes and sector clusters. According to Trending Topics, citing the Austrian Startup Monitor 2024, 287 startups were active in Tyrol, 22.2% of them university spin-offs, and 22.6% of founders were women. The region also has real exits: in October 2025 IBM bought Txture, an Innsbruck cloud software spin-off, and the team stayed in the city.

The Innsbruck Startups to Watch in 2027

1. ParityQC: the architecture behind quantum computers

ParityQC designs the architecture and operating software that quantum hardware makers use to run problems on their machines, based on the parity (LHZ) architecture developed at the University of Innsbruck. Its about page says it was founded in January 2020 by Wolfgang Lechner and Magdalena Hauser as a spin-off of the University of Innsbruck and the Austrian Academy of Sciences, with computer pioneer Hermann Hauser as co-founder, and lists Parity Quantum Computing GmbH at Rennweg 1 in Innsbruck plus companies in Hamburg, Paris and London. Its news page shows a steady flow of research papers and, in September 2026, the launch of the Parity Twine Optimizer, a product built on its compiler technology. It does not publish funding or staff figures; according to Trending Topics, it has been profitable since 2023 and employs more than 60 people.
Lesson for founders: ParityQC does not build quantum chips; it sells the layer every chip maker needs. In a hardware race, being the neutral supplier to all competitors can be safer than picking a winner.
Best for: founders in quantum software, deep tech and research spin-offs.

2. AQT: ion-trap quantum computers in a server rack

AQT (Alpine Quantum Technologies) builds general-purpose quantum computers that trap ions and fit into standard 19-inch server racks, sells lab instruments for quantum research, and offers cloud access to its machines. Its about page says it was founded in February 2018 by physicists Rainer Blatt, Thomas Monz (CEO) and Peter Zoller, when the research agency FFG and the University of Innsbruck invested €10 million. Since then it has delivered a quantum computer to the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre near Munich in December 2023, was chosen as vendor for the EuroHPC quantum computer in Poland, inaugurated there in June 2025, and put its IBEX Q1 system on Amazon Braket in November 2025. In May 2026 it introduced the LYNX series, which it says reached a Quantum Volume of 32768. Its company address is Technikerstrasse 17 in Innsbruck.
Lesson for founders: AQT turned decades of university research into a product that fits into an ordinary data centre. Making a lab breakthrough easy to install is often what makes it sellable.
Best for: founders in quantum hardware, scientific instruments and high-performance computing.

3. REPS: electricity from road traffic

REPS (Road Energy Production System) builds a patented road power plant that sits inside an existing road, captures energy when vehicles brake or slow down, stores it in batteries and supplies it to EV chargers, site operations or the grid. Its about page says founder and CEO Alfons Huber started the concept in October 2019, built a first prototype in June 2020, founded the company in March 2023, joined the EWOR Fellowship with a €1.5 million seed round in September 2025, and installed the first live system at the Port of Hamburg in November 2025. Its legal notice gives REPS GmbH in Mils, just east of Innsbruck. Its news page links a press release of 22 May 2026 announcing a $23.6 million equity round to scale the system; the lead investor is not named there.
Lesson for founders: REPS chose a first customer with heavy, predictable traffic, a container terminal, to prove its technology. A pilot site that shows the product working at full load is worth more than any slide.
Best for: founders in climate tech, energy hardware and logistics infrastructure.

4. Hololight: streaming industrial XR apps to headsets

Hololight makes software that streams heavy augmented and virtual reality applications from a server or PC to AR and VR headsets, so engineers in defence, automotive and manufacturing can work with large 3D models without running them on the headset. Its legal notice gives Holo-Light GmbH at Maria-Theresien-Strasse 1 in Innsbruck, with further companies in Ismaning near Munich and in Durham, North Carolina, and its about page lists Florian Haspinger as founder and managing director. It is actively shipping: its news page announced Hololight Stream 2026.1.0.0 in October 2026 and a joint release with SpectreXR in September 2026. It publishes no funding figures, so we cite none.
Lesson for founders: Hololight solved a bottleneck, too little computing power on headsets, instead of building another headset. Selling the missing piece of someone else's platform can be a faster route to enterprise customers.
Best for: founders in XR, industrial software and B2B infrastructure.

5. RateBoard: revenue AI for holiday hotels

RateBoard sells revenue management software for hotels, aimed especially at holiday hotels: its algorithm combines a hotel's own data with market data to suggest a price for each room, and an autopilot can push those prices straight into the hotel's property management system. Its site gives RateBoard GmbH at Fallmerayerstrasse 6 in Innsbruck and lists more than 1,700 customers and more than 80 interfaces, and its team page shows about 40 employees in two offices. Its logo now carries the name of Italian software group Zucchetti, but the site does not explain the relationship, and it publishes no funding figures.
Lesson for founders: RateBoard built for the customers on its doorstep, Tyrol's tourism hotels, and grew from there. A home market you understand deeply is a strong first niche.
Best for: founders in travel tech, hospitality software and pricing AI.

6. fibionic: lightweight parts inspired by nature

fibionic designs and produces fibre composite parts whose fibre paths are optimised the way nature builds dragonfly wings, for sports goods, cars, aircraft, medical technology and robotics. It says its rotor blades are 30 to 40 percent lighter and that its series process has cycle times under a minute. Its about page says it was founded in 2021 by Thomas Rettenwander, Johannes Mandler and Elias Hirschbichler, has 20 employees and is based in Götzens, just outside Innsbruck, and its site notes support from the aws Seedfinancing Deep Tech programme. According to Trending Topics, it raised a €3 million seed round in March 2026, and its press page links that coverage.
Lesson for founders: fibionic took a design idea from biology and paired it with a production process fast enough for series manufacturing. Investors in hardware want to see both the clever part and the factory part.
Best for: founders in advanced materials, manufacturing and sports equipment.

7. Sinsoma: DNA tests for nature, food and health

Sinsoma is a DNA analysis lab and a spin-off of the University of Innsbruck. It measures biodiversity from environmental DNA for companies that must report on nature under EU sustainability rules, and it tests food, honey, pathogens and even bed bugs. Its legal notice gives Sinsoma GmbH in Völs, next to Innsbruck, with managing director Michael Traugott, and its site names medical device maker MED-EL among the customers that used its testing. It publishes no funding figures.
Lesson for founders: Sinsoma found a new buyer for an old lab skill: companies that now have to measure their impact on biodiversity. New regulation can turn a research method into a market.
Best for: founders in biotech services, environmental data and sustainability reporting.

8. revitalyze: AI that reads construction tenders

revitalyze builds AI tools for construction cost estimators: Tenderhub reads all the documents of a construction tender, links them and flags risks, and PlanReader extracts quantities from PDF plans. Its legal notice gives revitalyze FlexCo in Ebbs near Kufstein, registered at the court in Innsbruck, and its site says it has worked on more than 300 construction projects in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, analysed more than 100,000 pages and reviewed more than €2 billion in project volume, with construction groups such as GOLDBECK among its users. It publishes no funding figures. It is registered as a FlexCo, the flexible company form Austria created for startups.
Lesson for founders: revitalyze applied AI to a boring, expensive task, reading hundreds of pages of tender documents, in an industry that rarely gets software built for it. Unglamorous problems often have the most willing buyers.
Best for: founders in construction tech, document AI and B2B SaaS.

Innsbruck Exits and Companies That Changed

  • Txture: the cloud transformation software company, founded in 2017 as a spin-off of the University of Innsbruck's computer science institute, was acquired by IBM in October 2025 and now runs as IBM Txture. It is an exit, so it is no longer on the watch list.
  • biocrates: the Innsbruck metabolomics company, which sells test kits that measure more than 1,000 metabolites, is now part of the Biognosys Group of Bruker affiliates, so it is no longer an independent startup.

Names From the Old List That We Removed

The 2026 version of this article listed ten names. Here is what we found when we checked each one in November 2026:
  • HeartBeat.bio: the organoid drug-testing company's own site gives its address at the Vienna Biocenter, so it is a Vienna startup.
  • infrared.city: its site says it was built in Vienna and started at the Austrian Institute of Technology there.
  • JENTIS: the privacy-first tracking company's site gives Vienna as its founding place and address.
  • BOOXit: its legal notice gives an address in Fischlham, Upper Austria.
  • Arkeon Biotechnologies, Fermify, TOM Robotics, Sendance, NEcharge and Mo Energy Systems: we could not confirm an Innsbruck base or, for some, a working website (NEcharge shows a "coming soon" page and Arkeon's site returned an error), so we removed them.
We also removed the old article's unsourced funding figure and its links to third-party lists and LinkedIn pages.
