Phoenix Startups to Watch in 2027: Verified Valley Companies in Nuclear AI, Climate Software, Medtech, Diagnostics, Fintech and Car-Free Living

Phoenix and the cities around it, known together as the Valley, combine a big public university, Arizona State University in Tempe, with a downtown life sciences district and many software firms in Scottsdale. In this article, Phoenix means the Phoenix metro area: Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale, Mesa, Chandler and the neighbouring cities. The 2026 version of this article listed ten names. When we checked them, most turned out to be based somewhere else (San Diego, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Kentucky or Los Angeles), and others gave no Phoenix-area address at all. For this 2027 edition we started again: in November 2026 we checked each company on its own website to confirm that it still operates, that it gives a Phoenix-area address, what it sells and what it publishes about its funding. What happened to the old names is listed near the end.
Quick answer: the Phoenix-area startups to watch in 2027 are Nuclearn (AI for nuclear power plants, Phoenix), Persefoni (carbon accounting software, Mesa), GT Medical Technologies (GammaTile brain tumour radiation, Tempe), CND Life Sciences (skin biopsy test for Parkinson's and related diseases, Scottsdale), equipifi (pay-over-time tools for banks and credit unions, Scottsdale), Culdesac (the car-free neighbourhood Culdesac Tempe) and One Raven (a smart home without subscriptions, Scottsdale). None of them publishes funding figures on its own site, so we cite none. For support, start with ASU's J. Orin Edson Entrepreneurship + Innovation Institute, the Arizona Commerce Authority's Arizona Innovation Challenge, the Phoenix Bioscience Core and SEED SPOT.

Why Phoenix Matters for Founders in 2027

The companies on this list show what the Valley does well. Several sell to heavily regulated buyers: nuclear plants (Nuclearn), hospitals and neurologists (GT Medical Technologies, CND Life Sciences), banks and credit unions (equipifi) and companies facing climate disclosure rules (Persefoni). Others turn the region's fast growth into products, such as Culdesac's car-free neighbourhood on the Tempe light rail and One Raven's smart homes. We removed the old article's claim about Phoenix venture funding growth because it had no primary source.

The Phoenix Startups to Watch in 2027

1. Nuclearn: AI built for nuclear power plants

Nuclearn sells one AI platform for nuclear plants. Its assistant, AtomAssist, answers questions with its sources, and specialist tools cover corrective actions, engineering, equipment, parts, procedures, regulatory work, simulators and work orders, all behind one sign-in and hosted for each customer separately. Its site says its products are used at more than 70 facilities in North America, that it has built AI software for nuclear plants since 2021, and that NuScale Power is deploying AtomAssist with its partner NPX (announced in August 2026). Its footer gives Nuclearn, Inc. in Phoenix, Arizona. It does not publish funding figures on its site.
Lesson for founders: Nuclearn chose one of the most cautious industries there is and built specifically for it, down to single-tenant hosting and security certification. In a regulated niche, fitting the customer's rules is the product.
Best for: founders building AI for energy, utilities and other regulated industries.

2. Persefoni: carbon accounting for companies and lenders

Persefoni makes software for measuring a company's carbon footprint and answering climate disclosure requests from customers, investors and regulators, with versions for businesses and for financial institutions, plus tools for California's SB 253 and SB 261 climate rules. Its homepage says it is used by more than 10,000 teams and offers a free sign-up; its customers include Xerox, Natera and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Its contact page lists its US office in Mesa, Arizona, with other offices in Toronto, Munich, Tokyo, Singapore, London and Ho Chi Minh City. It does not publish funding figures on its site.
Lesson for founders: Persefoni built for a reporting duty that companies cannot avoid. When a new rule creates work for every company, the tool that makes the work easier can sell to all of them.
Best for: founders in climate tech, ESG and B2B SaaS for finance teams.

3. GT Medical Technologies: radiation that starts during brain surgery

GT Medical Technologies makes GammaTile, which it describes as a first-of-its-kind implantable radiation therapy for operable brain tumours: small collagen tiles carrying radiation sources that the surgeon places where the tumour was removed. Its site says the treatment starts working at the time of surgery instead of two to eight weeks later, delivers most of its dose in the first 30 days, and dissolves so it does not need removing, and that GammaTile is FDA-cleared for newly diagnosed and recurrent glioblastoma, brain metastases and recurrent meningiomas. Its privacy policy gives the company's address as 1809 S Holbrook Lane, Tempe. It does not publish funding figures on its site.
Lesson for founders: GammaTile changes when treatment happens rather than inventing a new drug. Fitting a therapy into a step the patient already goes through, the surgery, can save weeks.
Best for: founders in medtech and oncology devices.

4. CND Life Sciences: a skin test for Parkinson's and related diseases

CND Life Sciences runs the Syn-One Test, which it calls the first commercially available skin-based test to give objective evidence for Parkinson's disease and related disorders: doctors take small skin biopsies, and CND's lab looks for abnormal alpha-synuclein in the skin's nerves. Its site says more than 70,000 patients have been tested and that its lab is CLIA, CAP and CLEP accredited. It gives its corporate office at 9165 E Del Camino Drive, Scottsdale, and in September 2026 it announced a new Innovation Laboratory in Scottsdale. It does not publish funding amounts on its site.
Lesson for founders: CND turned a research method into a lab service doctors can order. For many diagnostics startups, the business is the lab, not a device.
Best for: founders in diagnostics, neurology and lab services.

5. equipifi: buy now, pay later for banks and credit unions

equipifi lets banks and credit unions offer pay-over-time options inside their own digital banking, so their members can split purchases into instalments before or after they buy, instead of using a separate buy now, pay later app. Its site says it is the only platform that helps financial institutions own instalment capabilities (its own claim) and shows case studies from credit unions such as Educators Credit Union and Capitol CU. Its privacy policy names EquipiFi, Inc. at 8660 E Hartford Drive, Scottsdale. It does not publish funding figures on its site.
Lesson for founders: equipifi sells a popular consumer feature to the incumbents who were losing it to fintech apps. Helping established players keep their customers is a strong B2B pitch.
Best for: founders in fintech and banking software.

6. Culdesac: a neighbourhood without cars in Tempe

Culdesac designs, builds and manages walkable neighbourhoods. Its first, Culdesac Tempe, is what it calls the first car-free community built from scratch in the US, right on the light rail line in Tempe. Its about page says the neighbourhood already has more than 350 residents and 23 local businesses and will house more than 1,000 people when complete. Tempe is the only community on its site; it gives no separate headquarters address and publishes no funding figures.
Lesson for founders: Culdesac sells a way of living, not just apartments, and tests it in one real place. One working example is the best pitch for a new idea in an old industry like housing.
Best for: founders in proptech, urban mobility and climate.

7. One Raven: a smart home without subscriptions

One Raven sells a smart home system that runs on a server inside the home instead of in someone else's cloud: thermostat, smart lock, lighting, leak detectors, presence detection, scenes and audio control in one system. Its site says customers pay once, with no subscription, access fee or paywalled features, and gives its address as One Raven LLC, 16641 N 91st Street, Suite 101, Scottsdale. It lists no prices on its homepage and publishes no funding figures.
Lesson for founders: One Raven positions itself against the most common complaint about smart homes: too many apps and subscriptions. A clear enemy makes a product easy to explain.
Best for: founders in consumer hardware and home tech.

Where Phoenix Startups Get Support

  • ASU J. Orin Edson Entrepreneurship + Innovation Institute: Arizona State University's startup institute. Its Venture Devils programme supports all ASU and Maricopa Community Colleges students and matches teams with Venture Mentors; it says more than 800 Venture Devils teams are active. It also runs pitch competitions, incubators, makerspaces and Prepped, a mobile food incubator.
  • Arizona Innovation Challenge: run by the Arizona Commerce Authority. Awardees receive $100,000 of non-dilutive funding and three months of customised support. According to the programme page as we checked it on 1 November 2026, the Fall 2026 round was for SaaS startups, applications ran from 14 to 28 September 2026, and awardees were due to be announced on 4 November 2026. Watch the page for the next round.
  • Phoenix Bioscience Core: a 30-acre life sciences district in Downtown Phoenix, anchored by Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, the University of Arizona, the TGen research institute and health systems such as Banner Health and Phoenix Children's, with space for emerging life science companies.
  • SEED SPOT: a Phoenix-based programme for impact-driven founders, at 275 N. Gateway Drive. It runs a 2-Day Launch Camp for idea-stage founders and an eight-week Impact Accelerator, and lists a mentor network of more than 400 experts.
  • Galvanize: its homepage does not mention a Phoenix campus, so we could not confirm a local programme and do not list it as a local resource.

Phoenix Companies From the Old List That Changed or Could Not Be Verified

The 2026 version of this article listed ten names. Here is what we found when we checked each one in November 2026:
  • Kept: Culdesac, whose only community, Culdesac Tempe, is in the Phoenix metro area.
  • Mirador Therapeutics: a real biotech, but its site gives its headquarters in San Diego, California, so it left a Phoenix list.
  • EnPower: its web address now leads to Caminus Power, which says it is based in Indianapolis, Indiana.
  • Codero: its web address now leads to Patmos, a hosting company in Kansas City, Missouri.
  • Mainline Telecommunications: its site says it is headquartered in Grayson, Kentucky, and has offered telecom services since December 2000.
  • EverService: now EverService Holdings, a holding company that gives Los Angeles, California as its location.
  • Chassi and Client Chat Live: neither site gives a Phoenix-area address, so we could not confirm a Phoenix base.
  • Mid-State Communications and AerialSphere: we found no official site for the first, and AerialSphere's site did not load for us, so we could not verify either.
We also removed the old article's links to third-party startup directories and bootcamp blogs, its unsourced claim about venture funding growth since 2022, and a quote attributed to a funding-tracker website.
