Moz vs Majestic (2027): Domain Authority Suite or Trust Flow Backlink Tool for Your Startup's Link Building?

Moz vs Majestic: Domain Authority Suite or Trust Flow Backlink Specialist?

Moz and Majestic are two of the oldest names in link research, and both give you a single number for how strong a website's links are. Moz Pro is an all-in-one SEO suite built around Domain Authority: keyword research, rank tracking, site crawls, link research and, now, tracking of how AI assistants mention your brand. Majestic does one job: it crawls the web, maps who links to whom and scores those links with Trust Flow and Citation Flow. We checked both on their official pricing, product and help pages in October 2026, so every price, limit and index figure below comes from Moz or Majestic itself.
Quick answer: if your startup needs one SEO tool for keywords, rankings, audits and links, choose Moz Pro: Standard costs $99 a month ($79 paid yearly), Medium has a 7-day free trial, and a free Moz account gives 10 Link Explorer queries a month plus the free MozBar. If links are the problem you are solving (finding link prospects, vetting sites before a guest post, checking a domain's past), choose Majestic: Lite costs €46.99 a month excluding VAT, Pro €94.99 adds the Historic Index back to 2006, and a free account gives a few searches a day. Teams that build links every week often use both: Moz for keywords and rankings, Majestic for a second, deeper view of backlinks.
Majestic against an all-in-one suite is also covered in Semrush vs Majestic, and Moz's pricing against Ahrefs in Ahrefs vs Moz. For technical site audits rather than links, see Screaming Frog vs Sitebulb.

The Two Tools Compared

Moz Pro: the All-in-One Suite Behind Domain Authority

Moz Pro comes from Moz, now part of Ziff Davis, the company that created Domain Authority. DA is a score from 1 to 100, calculated by a machine learning model mainly from link data, that predicts how likely a site is to rank compared with its competitors. Moz itself stresses that DA is not a Google ranking factor; it is a way to compare sites. Around it, Moz Pro bundles Keyword Explorer (more than 1.25 billion keyword suggestions, with Difficulty and search intent), Rank Tracker, Site Crawl, Link Explorer and, on every current plan, AI visibility tracking. For keyword and competitor traffic research, compare SE Ranking vs Similarweb.
  • Starter, $49 a month: Moz's entry plan, "designed specifically for individuals managing a single website". Moz does not list its limits next to the other plans.
  • Standard, $99 a month ($79 paid yearly): 1 user, 3 tracked sites, 300 tracked keywords, 100,000 pages crawled a week, 150 keyword queries and 5,000 backlink queries a month, 1 link tracking list, and 150 AI prompts tracked weekly across GPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode.
  • Medium, $179 ($143 yearly): 2 users, 10 sites, 1,500 tracked keywords, 5,000 keyword queries and 20,000 backlink queries a month, 30 link tracking lists. This is the plan with the 7-day free trial.
  • Large, $299 ($239 yearly): 3 users, 25 sites, 3,000 tracked keywords, 15,000 keyword queries and 70,000 backlink queries a month.
  • Extras: yearly billing saves 20%, extra seats cost $49 a month, MozBar Premium is included in every plan, and you can cancel or change plans at any time. Moz Local, for local listings, is a separate product.
For link building, the tool that matters is Link Explorer. Moz says its index holds 45.5 trillion links, 8.7 trillion URLs and 1 billion domains. It shows Domain Authority, Page Authority and Spam Score for any site, anchor text, top linked pages, follow and nofollow counts, and newly discovered and lost linking domains. Link Intersect shows sites that link to up to five competitors but not to you, which is the fastest way to build a prospect list. With a free Moz account you get 10 Link Explorer queries a month, including the competitor backlinks you are missing.
The free MozBar extension for Chrome and Firefox shows Domain Authority, Page Authority, Spam Score and link counts on every page you visit, which is handy when you scan a list of guest post sites. Best for: founders who want one tool for keywords, rankings, site health and links, and anyone who needs to report a simple authority score to a client or investor. Majestic: the Specialist Backlink Index With Trust Flow

Majestic was established in 2004 and runs its own crawler. It keeps two link indexes, and the index box on its homepage showed these figures on 29 October 2026:
  • Fresh Index: every backlink found in the last 120 days, including links that were deleted or lost in that time. It had about 188 billion unique URLs crawled and 549 billion found.
  • Historic Index: records back to 6 June 2006, with about 4.5 trillion unique URLs crawled and 21.7 trillion found. Its data ends on 26 March 2024, and it was last updated on 3 May 2024, so use the Fresh Index for anything newer.
Majestic's scores are what most link builders know it for. According to its glossary, Trust Flow measures the quality of the links to a page or site, based on how closely it is linked to manually reviewed trusted seed sites; Citation Flow measures link "power" or quantity; and Topical Trust Flow shows in which topics a site has influence. All three run from 0 to 100 on a logarithmic scale. A site with high Citation Flow but low Trust Flow has many links but few trusted ones, which is a warning sign when you choose where to place a guest post.
  • Lite, €46.99 a month (€469.90 a year): 1 user and 1 million analysis units, Fresh Index only, with Site Explorer, Trust Flow and Topical Trust Flow, Link Graph, Link Context, Related Sites, the Bulk Backlink Checker, Campaigns and up to 5,000 rows per search.
  • Pro, €94.99 a month (€949.90 a year): 1 user and 20 million analysis units, adding the Historic Index, Compare, Clique Hunter (sites that link to several of your competitors), Backlink History, Flow Metric History, Search Explorer, raw data exports and an experimental rank tracker via Google Search Console.
  • API, €379.99 a month: 5 users, 100 million analysis units and full API access, for agencies and developers.
  • Terms: prices exclude VAT, and Lite and Pro have a 7-day money-back guarantee for new customers. There is no free trial.
Majestic's free SEO tools include a free backlink checker (a few Site Explorer clicks a day with a free account), a weekly showcase site with almost Lite-level access, browser plugins that show link counts and Flow Metrics for the page you are on, and the Majestic Million, a free list of the top 1 million domains. What Majestic does not have: a keyword database with search volumes, a site audit or AI search tracking. Best for: link builders, founders who already have content and now need links, agencies vetting link prospects at scale, and anyone checking a domain's past before buying it or partnering with it. Majestic against a keyword clustering tool is in Majestic vs Keyword Insights.

Domain Authority vs Trust Flow: Which Metric Should You Trust?

Neither score is used by Google. Both are each vendor's estimate built from its own link index, so the same site gets different numbers in Moz and Majestic, and a score only means something next to your competitors' scores in the same tool. Use them for different questions:
  • "Can this site rank, and how far behind am I?" Compare Domain Authority with the sites on page one for your keyword. Moz's Keyword Explorer even shows a minimum Domain Authority for the ranking pages.
  • "Is a link from this site worth having?" Look at Trust Flow, the gap between Trust Flow and Citation Flow, and whether Topical Trust Flow matches your topic. Add Moz's Spam Score as a second check.
  • "Did this domain have a spammy past?" Majestic Pro's Historic Index and Backlink History, which go back to 2006.

What Changed Since the Old Version of This Article

  • Prices added: the old article had none. Moz Pro now runs from Starter at $49 and Standard at $99 a month; Majestic from Lite at €46.99 a month excluding VAT.
  • Moz's "Priority score": no longer described on Moz's Keyword Explorer page, which now lists Difficulty, Organic CTR and search intent.
  • Free Moz Keyword Explorer: the old article called it a free plan. Today a free Moz account gives limited access to Keyword Explorer and 10 Link Explorer queries a month; full access needs Moz Pro.
  • AI search: Moz Pro now tracks how GPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode answer prompts about your brand. Majestic does not.
  • Majestic's Historic Index has not been updated since 3 May 2024. For links found since then, use the Fresh Index.
  • Removed: eight links to third-party review and list sites, generic "common mistakes" and "battle-tested tips" sections, and an outdated directory count (F/MS Marketing Directories now lists 858 places to submit a startup, not 1,500).

Moz or Majestic: Which Should You Choose?

  • You are starting SEO from zero: Moz Pro, or Moz's free tools first. Keywords, rank tracking and fixing your site come before link building.
  • You already rank on page two and competitors have more links: Majestic, to see where their links come from and which prospects have relevant Topical Trust Flow. Moz's Link Intersect does a similar job if you already pay for Moz.
  • You are about to pay for a guest post or sponsored article: check the site in both: Trust Flow and Topical Trust Flow in Majestic, Spam Score and Domain Authority in Moz. The free versions are usually enough for a handful of sites.
  • You are buying a domain or choosing a partner site: Majestic Pro, for the Historic Index and Backlink History.
  • You want to know whether ChatGPT and Google's AI answers mention you: Moz Pro. Majestic does not track AI search.
  • Your budget is close to zero: MozBar, 10 free Link Explorer queries a month and Majestic's free searches. Our lists of free Moz alternatives and free Ahrefs alternatives add more free tools.
  • Neither fits: see Moz alternatives, Ahrefs alternatives and Ahrefs vs Semrush.

How Founders Use Moz and Majestic to Build Links

  1. Check your baseline. Install MozBar and run your site through Link Explorer: note your Domain Authority, linking domains and top linked pages, then do the same for the three sites that outrank you. Our guide to checking competitor keywords covers the keyword side.
  2. Find link gaps. Moz's Link Intersect or Majestic Pro's Clique Hunter list the sites that link to your competitors but not to you. Those are your warmest prospects.
  3. Vet each prospect. Skip sites with a high Spam Score or with Citation Flow far above Trust Flow, and favour sites whose Topical Trust Flow matches your industry. Our list of high-authority domains that allow user-generated content is a starting point.
  4. Earn the links. Guest posts, expert quotes, startup directories and press releases work best for young companies; see 20 free ways to get quality backlinks, the benefits of paid guest posts and F/MS Marketing Directories, which lists 858 directories, launch sites and communities where you can submit your startup.
  5. Track new and lost links. Check Majestic's Fresh Index or a Moz link tracking list every month, and ask for a fix when a valuable link disappears.
Links help pages that deserve to rank, so publish the pages first. Do your keyword research, then write one useful page per topic yourself or with the F/MS AI SEO Tool, which turns a keyword into an article built to rank on Google and to be cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity. If you would rather hand link building to someone else, read what makes a great link-building agency first. And if nobody searches for the problem you solve, validate your startup idea before you spend on links. The AI SEO blog explains how AI search changes what to publish.

FAQ: Moz vs Majestic

What is the main difference between Moz and Majestic?

Moz Pro is an all-in-one SEO suite with keyword research, rank tracking, site crawls, link research and AI search tracking, built around its Domain Authority score. Majestic is a specialist backlink tool with its own link index and Trust Flow, Citation Flow and Topical Trust Flow scores.

Which is better for backlink analysis, Moz or Majestic?

Majestic, if links are all you need: it has a Fresh Index of the last 120 days, a Historic Index back to 2006, Topical Trust Flow and Clique Hunter. Moz's Link Explorer is strong too (45.5 trillion links by Moz's count) and comes inside a full SEO suite.

Is Domain Authority or Trust Flow more accurate?

Neither is a Google metric. Domain Authority predicts how likely a site is to rank; Trust Flow measures how close a site is to trusted seed sites. Compare each only with competitors' scores in the same tool.

How much does Moz Pro cost?

When we checked in October 2026: Starter $49 a month for one website, Standard $99 ($79 paid yearly), Medium $179 ($143) and Large $299 ($239). Medium has a 7-day free trial.

How much does Majestic cost?

In the default view: Lite €46.99, Pro €94.99 and API €379.99 a month, excluding VAT, or €469.90, €949.90 and €3,799.90 a year. Lite and Pro have a 7-day money-back guarantee for new customers.

Can I use Moz or Majestic for free?

Yes, with limits. A free Moz account gives 10 Link Explorer queries a month, limited Keyword Explorer and the free MozBar extension. A free Majestic account gives a few Site Explorer searches a day, plus browser plugins and the Majestic Million list.

Where can I submit a guest post about my startup?

You can publish a guest post in one of the Fe/male Switch startup blogs, which rank in Google and in AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity. Get a quality backlink.

Is Majestic's Historic Index still updated?

According to the index box on majestic.com, the Historic Index covers 6 June 2006 to 26 March 2024 and was last updated on 3 May 2024. The Fresh Index, covering the last 120 days, is updated several times a day.

Does Majestic do keyword research or rank tracking?

Only a little. It has Keyword Checker and N-grams Near Links, and Pro adds an experimental rank tracker via Google Search Console. For keyword volumes, difficulty and rank tracking, Moz Pro or another SEO suite is the better tool.

Should a startup buy both Moz and Majestic?

Only if link building is a big part of your growth plan. Most early-stage startups get more from one suite plus the free tools of the other, then add Majestic Lite once they have pages worth linking to.
