Ahrefs vs Semrush (2027): Prices, Free Versions, AI Search Tracking and Which SEO Suite Gives a Startup More for Its Budget

Ahrefs vs Semrush for Startups: Which SEO Suite Gives a Small Team More for Its Budget?

Ahrefs and Semrush are the two big all-in-one SEO suites. Both do keyword research, competitor analysis, backlinks, rank tracking and site audits, and both now track how ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI answers mention your brand. For a startup the question is not which one is "best" in general, but which one gives a small team more for a limited budget: the cheapest useful plan, the free versions, trials, seats and the add-ons you will be asked to buy. We checked both tools' official pricing and product pages in October 2026, in the default view each site showed us (euros, as we checked from Europe).
Quick answer: on a tight budget, start with Ahrefs: Ahrefs Free costs nothing for your own site, Starter is €27 ($29) a month for occasional research, and Lite at €119 ($129) a month tracks 750 keywords. Choose Semrush if you want to try before you pay (7-day free trial), daily rank tracking, more AI prompt tracking for the money (50 prompts a day on Starter) or extra toolkits for local SEO, content, social and ads; its SEO plan costs €134 a month or €112.52 billed annually. Most early-stage startups only need one of the two.

The Two Suites Compared

Ahrefs: Cheapest Way In, No Trial

Ahrefs is built on its own web crawler: Site Explorer for competitor and backlink research, Keywords Explorer, Rank Tracker, Site Audit, Web Analytics and Brand Radar for AI visibility. Its Keywords Explorer shows 28.7 billion keywords filtered from 110 billion it has discovered, and its data page says the live backlink index is updated every 15 to 30 minutes. These are Ahrefs' own figures, but backlink research is still where Ahrefs is strongest.
  • Starter, €27 ($29) a month: 200 credits a month for Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker, the SEO Toolbar and Web Analytics. The Starter plan renews monthly only, and you cannot add users or add-ons, so it suits a founder who researches a few times a month.
  • Lite, €119 ($129) a month: "for small businesses and personal projects": 750 tracked keywords, 6 months of history, 5 unverified and unlimited verified projects, 100,000 crawl credits, 150 AI prompt checks, API and MCP access, 1,000 credits per user.
  • Standard, €229 ($249) a month: 2,000 tracked keywords, 2 years of history, unlimited credits, 300 AI prompt checks, plus Content Explorer, Portfolios and Batch Analysis.
  • Advanced, €419 ($449), and Enterprise, €1,394 ($1,499) a month: 5,000 tracked keywords and Looker Studio on Advanced; Enterprise needs an annual commitment.
  • Billing rules: paying annually saves up to 17%. Ahrefs says it never runs discounts, does not issue refunds in general (a monthly plan you have not used may be refunded), and has no contracts or setup fees.

Rank Tracker updates weekly on every plan. If you need daily rankings on Ahrefs' budget, pair it with a rank tracker; see Ahrefs vs Wincher and Wincher vs AccuRanker.

Ahrefs Free: SEO for Your Own Site at No Cost

What used to be Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is now Ahrefs Free. You verify that you own a website and get Site Audit (5,000 crawl credits per project a month), Site Explorer for your own backlinks and keywords (the top 1,000 of each) and Web Analytics (up to 1 million events per project), on an unlimited number of verified sites. It does not open competitors' sites, and Keywords Explorer is not included; that is what Starter is for. When a paid Ahrefs plan ends, your account switches back to Ahrefs Free.

Ahrefs vs Semrush: Feature by Feature

Keyword research

Both databases are huge by their own counts: 28.7 billion keywords at Ahrefs, 28 billion+ at Semrush. The practical difference for a startup is access. Ahrefs Starter gives you Keywords Explorer for €27 a month within 200 credits, and Lite adds 1,000 credits per user; Semrush's free plan lets you run 10 reports a day, which is enough to check a handful of keywords before you pay. If you mostly need ideas, free tools go a long way; see Keyword Tool vs Keyword Planner.

Backlinks and competitor research

Ahrefs is the traditional favourite for link research, with Domain Rating and a live index updated every 15 to 30 minutes. Semrush counts 43 trillion+ backlinks and includes backlink tools in every SEO plan. On a small budget, Ahrefs Starter is the cheaper way to look at a competitor's links; Semrush becomes better value once you also use its other toolkits.

Rank tracking and site audits

Semrush SEO tracks 500 keywords daily; Ahrefs Lite tracks 750 keywords weekly. If you want to see the effect of a change the next day, Semrush wins; if you want more keywords for less money, Ahrefs does. For audits, Ahrefs Free runs Site Audit on your own verified sites at no cost, which is the cheapest way to fix technical problems on a young website.

AI search visibility

Both suites now track brand mentions in AI answers. Ahrefs Lite includes 150 prompt checks a month (5 prompts tracked daily), and Brand Radar covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot across more than 500 million prompts, sold from €179 ($199) a month. Semrush includes AI search tracking in its SEO plan, 50 prompts daily on Starter, and a separate AI Visibility toolkit from €94.94 a month per domain (billed annually) with 25 daily prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity.

If being recommended by ChatGPT matters more to you than classic rankings, Semrush Starter gives more prompts for the money than Ahrefs Lite; for research across the whole market, Brand Radar's prompt database is the bigger one.

Seats and add-ons

Every Ahrefs plan includes 1 user; Lite takes up to 2 more at €37.40 ($40) a month each and Standard up to 5 at €56.10 ($60). Semrush extra users start at €43 a month. Both sell extras: at Ahrefs, Content Kit from $99, Report Builder at $99 and Brand Radar AI; at Semrush, AI Visibility, Local, Content, Social and Advertising toolkits and branded reports. Budget for the plan you need plus one seat, not for every add-on on the pricing page.

What Changed Since the Old Version of This Guide

  • Semrush plans and prices: the old guide said Semrush starts at $139.95 a month. Semrush now sells toolkits; the SEO + AI Search plans are SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced, from €112.52 a month billed annually in the default view from Europe.
  • Semrush ownership: Semrush has been an Adobe company since April 2026.
  • Ahrefs Webmaster Tools has been renamed Ahrefs Free, and Ahrefs added a $29 Starter plan.
  • Backlink counts: the old "30.6 trillion backlinks" figure for Ahrefs is no longer on Ahrefs' pages, so we left it out. Semrush now states 43 trillion+.
  • AI search tracking is now part of both suites, with separate paid products (Brand Radar AI and the AI Visibility toolkit).
  • Removed: the unsourced claim that 72% of startups fail because of poor marketing, the third-party "learn more" links and the generic "common mistakes" section.

Ahrefs or Semrush: Which Should You Choose?

  • You have no SEO budget yet: Ahrefs Free for your own site plus Semrush's free plan for 10 reports a day. See also our free Ahrefs alternatives.
  • You research a few times a month: Ahrefs Starter at €27 ($29), paid only in the months you need it.
  • You want to test on your own data first: Semrush, because of its 7-day free trial; Ahrefs has none.
  • Link building drives your growth: Ahrefs Lite or Standard.
  • You need daily rankings or several marketing toolkits in one login: Semrush SEO or Starter.
  • You care most about how AI assistants mention you: Semrush Starter (50 daily prompts) or its AI Visibility toolkit; Ahrefs Brand Radar if you have the budget for market-wide research.
  • Neither fits your budget: see Ahrefs alternatives, Serpstat vs SE Ranking, SE Ranking vs Long Tail Pro and open-source Ahrefs alternatives.

How to Test Both Tools Before You Pay

Test Ahrefs and Semrush before you pay: verify your site in Ahrefs Free, open a free Semrush account, run Semrush's 7-day trial, then pay for one month
Testing Ahrefs and Semrush before you pay.
  1. Verify your site in Ahrefs Free. Run Site Audit and look at the keywords and backlinks you already have.
  2. Open a free Semrush account. Use the 10 reports a day on your top competitors and a few keywords; the free SEOquake browser plugin adds quick metrics while you browse.
  3. Run Semrush's 7-day trial. Add your real keywords, competitors and the AI prompts your customers ask, so you see the paid features on your own data.
  4. Pay for one month, not a year. Ahrefs has no trial and in general no refunds, so a single month of Starter or Lite is the safest test. Switch to yearly billing only once you use the tool every week.

How Founders Use Ahrefs or Semrush to Get Customers

An SEO suite pays off only if it changes what you publish. Pick five to ten searches that describe your customers' problem, check their difficulty and intent, track them and write one useful page per topic. Keyword research is also a cheap demand test: if nobody searches for the problem you solve, validate your startup idea before you build. Our guide to checking competitor keywords shows how to find the gaps worth writing about.
Then turn the keywords into articles. The F/MS AI SEO Tool writes articles from your keywords that are built to rank on Google and to be cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity, with human editors checking them, and F/MS Marketing Services can add backlinks and guest posts that build your authority.
