Ahrefs vs Moz (2027): Prices, Free Tools, Limits and Which SEO Tool a Small Business or Startup Should Pay For

Ahrefs vs Moz: Which SEO Tool Should a Small Business or Startup Pay For?

Ahrefs and Moz Pro are two of the best-known SEO suites, and both now track how your brand shows up in AI answers as well as in Google. For a small business the real questions are simpler: what does each one cost, what can you use for free, and which limits will you hit first? We checked both tools' official pricing, free-tool and product pages in October 2026, so every price and limit below comes from Ahrefs or Moz itself.
Quick answer: choose Moz Pro if you want the cheaper full plan (Standard, $99 a month or $79 billed yearly), a 7-day free trial and simple authority metrics such as Domain Authority. Choose Ahrefs if keyword and backlink research is the core of your growth and you can pay $129 a month for Lite: it has the bigger keyword database (28.7 billion keywords, by Ahrefs' count) and tracks 750 keywords on Lite, but there is no free trial and no discount. On almost no budget, start with the free versions: Ahrefs Free for your own verified site and MozBar plus Moz's free tools for everything else.

The Two Tools Compared

Ahrefs: Bigger Data, Higher Price, No Trial

Ahrefs is an SEO and marketing suite built on its own web crawler: Site Explorer for competitor and backlink research, Keywords Explorer, Rank Tracker, Site Audit, Web Analytics and, more recently, Brand Radar for visibility in AI tools. Its Keywords Explorer shows 28.7 billion keywords filtered from 110 billion it has discovered, and its data page says the backlink index is updated every 15 to 30 minutes across 217 keyword locations. These are Ahrefs' own numbers, but they explain why Ahrefs is often the first choice for link research.
  • Starter, $29 a month: 200 credits a month for Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker, the SEO Toolbar and Web Analytics. The Starter plan renews monthly only and cannot take extra users or add-ons, so it suits light, occasional research.
  • Lite, $129 a month: "for small businesses and personal projects": 750 tracked keywords, 6 months of history, 5 unverified and unlimited verified projects, 100,000 crawl credits, 150 AI prompt checks, API and MCP access, 1,000 credits per user.
  • Standard, $249 a month: 2,000 tracked keywords, 2 years of history, unlimited credits, plus Content Explorer, Portfolios, Batch Analysis and keyword clusters.
  • Advanced, $449, and Enterprise, $1,499 a month: 5,000 tracked keywords, 5 years of history and Looker Studio on Advanced; Enterprise needs an annual commitment.
  • Billing rules: paying annually saves up to 17%. Ahrefs says it never runs discounts and has no free trials, does not issue refunds in general, and has no contracts or setup fees, so you can cancel at any time.

Prices are in US dollars; when we opened the pricing page from Europe it showed euros instead (Lite €119, Standard €229, Advanced €419 a month). Rank Tracker updates weekly on every plan, so if you need daily rankings, see Ahrefs vs Wincher.

Ahrefs Free: the Best No-Cost Option for Your Own Website

What used to be Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is now called Ahrefs Free. You verify that you own a site and get Site Audit (170+ technical and on-page checks, 5,000 crawl credits per project a month), Site Explorer for your own backlinks and keywords (up to 1,000 at a time) and privacy-focused Web Analytics, on an unlimited number of verified sites. It does not let you research competitors' sites; that needs a paid plan. On top of it, Ahrefs' free SEO tools include a keyword generator, a keyword difficulty checker, a backlink checker (top 20 links), a website authority checker for Domain Rating, a SERP checker and an AI visibility checker.

Moz Pro: Cheaper Plans, a Free Trial and Domain Authority

Moz Pro comes from Moz, the company behind the Domain Authority score, which is now part of Ziff Davis. It covers keyword research, rank tracking, site crawls, link research and AI visibility tracking. Moz says its Keyword Explorer draws on more than 1.25 billion keywords, with Difficulty, Organic CTR and search intent for each, and its Link Explorer page lists 45.5 trillion links across 1 billion domains.
  • Starter, $49 a month: Moz's entry-level plan, "designed specifically for individuals managing a single website". Moz does not list its limits next to the other plans.
  • Standard, $99 a month ($79 billed yearly): "for small businesses that just need the basics of SEO": 1 user, 3 tracked sites, 300 tracked keywords, 100,000 pages crawled a week, 150 keyword queries and 5,000 backlink queries a month, and 150 AI prompts tracked weekly across GPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode.
  • Medium, $179 ($143 yearly): 2 users, 10 sites, 1,500 tracked keywords and 5,000 keyword queries a month. This is the plan with the 7-day free trial.
  • Large, $299 ($239 yearly): 3 users, 25 sites, 3,000 tracked keywords and 15,000 keyword queries.
  • Extras and terms: extra seats cost $49 a month, and you can add, for example, 200 tracked keywords for $20 a month. Yearly billing saves 20%, and you can cancel or change plans at any time.

The limit to watch on Standard is keyword research: 150 keyword queries a month runs out quickly if you research every week. If that happens, Medium's 5,000 queries or Ahrefs Lite are the next step.

Moz's Free SEO Tools and MozBar

Moz's free SEO tools include Domain Analysis (a Domain Authority checker), Keyword Explorer, Link Explorer, Competitive Research, a Brand Authority checker, a local citation checker and MozCast, which tracks Google algorithm changes. With a free Moz Community account you get 10 Link Explorer queries a month and limited access to Keyword Explorer and MozBar, the free Chrome and Firefox extension that shows Domain Authority and Page Authority for any page you visit.

Ahrefs vs Moz: Feature by Feature

Keyword research

Ahrefs has the larger keyword database by its own count (28.7 billion against Moz's 1.25 billion+), and Ahrefs Standard and higher plans come with unlimited credits (Lite has 1,000 credits per user a month). Moz Standard caps you at 150 keyword queries a month, which is enough for a small site that picks a handful of topics, but not for weekly content planning. If you mainly need keyword ideas, free tools can carry you a long way; see Keyword Tool vs Keyword Planner.

Backlinks and authority

Both tools are strong here and use their own scores: Domain Rating at Ahrefs, Domain Authority, Page Authority and Spam Score at Moz. MozBar shows Domain Authority for free on any page, and Moz Standard includes 5,000 backlink queries a month; Ahrefs updates its backlink index every 15 to 30 minutes and lets you study any competitor's links from the Starter plan up. For a free starting point, both have free backlink checkers.

Site audits

Ahrefs Site Audit checks 170+ issues and is free for your own verified sites through Ahrefs Free, which makes it the cheapest way to audit a small website. Moz Pro's Site Crawl covers 100,000 pages a week on Standard. The old version of this guide called Moz the better audit tool; today, for a small site, Ahrefs Free's audit costs nothing, so try it first.

Rank tracking and AI search

Ahrefs Lite tracks 750 keywords (weekly updates) against Moz Standard's 300. For AI visibility, Moz Standard tracks 150 prompts a week across GPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, while Ahrefs Lite includes 150 AI prompt checks a month and sells Brand Radar AI separately from $199 a month. If AI answers matter more to you than rankings, Moz's included prompt tracking is the better deal at this price.

Local SEO

Ahrefs Lite includes GBP Monitor, still in beta, for Google Business Profiles. Moz sells local SEO as a separate product: Moz Local starts at $20 a month ($16 billed yearly) with listings in 90+ directories and review monitoring.

What Changed Since the Old Version of This Guide

  • Cheaper entry plans: the old guide said Moz starts at $99 and Ahrefs at $129 a month. Both now have smaller plans: Ahrefs Starter at $29 and Moz Starter at $49 a month.
  • Ahrefs Webmaster Tools has been renamed Ahrefs Free.
  • Ahrefs' keyword database: the old "over 10 billion keywords" is out of date; Ahrefs now states 28.7 billion.
  • Moz "Priority Scores": no longer described on Moz's Keyword Explorer page, which now lists Difficulty, Organic CTR and search intent.
  • AI search tracking is now part of both tools' plans.
  • Removed: third-party "learn more" links, unsourced "largest database" verdicts and the generic "common SEO mistakes" section.

Ahrefs or Moz: Which Should You Choose?

  • You have no SEO budget yet: Ahrefs Free for your own site, plus MozBar and Moz's free tools. See also our free Ahrefs alternatives and free Moz alternatives.
  • You need occasional keyword and competitor checks: Ahrefs Starter at $29 a month, paid only in the months you need it.
  • You want one full plan at the lowest price: Moz Pro Standard ($99, or $79 billed yearly), after the 7-day trial on Medium.
  • Link building and content research drive your growth: Ahrefs Lite or Standard.
  • You care about how AI tools mention your brand: Moz Pro, because 150 weekly prompts are included from Standard.
  • You run a local business: Ahrefs Lite's GBP Monitor, or Moz Pro plus Moz Local; also compare Moz vs SE Ranking, where local SEO is included.
  • Neither fits: see Ahrefs alternatives, Moz alternatives and open-source Ahrefs alternatives.

How to Test Both Tools Before You Pay

Test Ahrefs and Moz before you pay: verify your site in Ahrefs Free, add Moz's free tools, run Moz's 7-day trial, then pay for one month
Testing Ahrefs and Moz before you pay.
  1. Verify your site in Ahrefs Free. Run Site Audit and look at the keywords and backlinks you already have.
  2. Add Moz's free tools. Install MozBar, check your Domain Authority and use the 10 free Link Explorer queries on your top competitors.
  3. Run Moz Pro's 7-day trial. Use your real keywords and three competitors, and run a site crawl, so you see the paid features on your own data.
  4. Pay for one month, not a year. Ahrefs has no trial and in general no refunds, so a single month of Starter ($29) or Lite ($129) is the safest test. Switch to yearly billing only once you use the tool every week.

How Founders Use Ahrefs or Moz to Get Customers

An SEO tool pays off only if it changes what you publish. Pick five to ten searches that describe your customers' problem, check their difficulty, track them and write one useful page per topic. SEO research is also a cheap demand test: if nobody searches for the problem you solve, validate your startup idea before you build.
Then turn the keywords into articles. The F/MS AI SEO Tool writes articles from your keywords that are built to rank on Google and to be cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity, with human editors checking them, and F/MS Marketing Services can add backlinks and guest posts that build your authority.
