Free Corel PHOTO-PAINT Alternatives (2027): Is PHOTO-PAINT Free, Plus 10 Free Photo Editors for Windows, Mac and Online

Free Corel PHOTO-PAINT Alternatives for Windows, Mac and the Browser

People search for "Corel PHOTO-PAINT free download" or "Corel PHOTO-PAINT online" because they want PHOTO-PAINT's layers, masks, retouching tools and effects without paying for a whole design suite. The short answer: PHOTO-PAINT is not free and is not sold on its own. It comes with CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, and the only free way to use it is the suite's 15-day trial. The good news for 2027 is that the free editors are stronger than ever: Affinity, once a paid app, is now free, Photopea opens PSD files in the browser, and GIMP 3 added non-destructive filters and CMYK support. We checked every tool below on its official website or official app store listing in November 2026, including what the free version holds back.
Quick answer: for a full professional editor on Windows, Mac or iPad, use Affinity (free with a Canva account); for a completely free and open-source editor that also runs on Linux, use GIMP; for PHOTO-PAINT-style editing in the browser with PSD files, use Photopea; for painting (and as a free Corel Painter alternative), use Krita; for quick edits on a Windows laptop, use Paint.NET.

Is Corel PHOTO-PAINT Free?

No. The official Corel PHOTO-PAINT page says PHOTO-PAINT comes with CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, an image editor for Windows and Mac with non-destructive layer-based editing, PSD support, AI background removal, AI masking and AI image generation. On the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2026 page the suite (CorelDRAW, Corel PHOTO-PAINT, Corel Font Manager and, for subscribers, CorelDRAW Web) is sold as a subscription or a one-time purchase. In the default view for our location (the Netherlands, prices in euros including VAT) the Annual Plan was listed at €369 a year, with a 30% first-year discount running when we checked on 3 November 2026.
  • Free download: the CorelDRAW free trial gives you the full Graphics Suite, including PHOTO-PAINT, on Windows or Mac for 15 days, with no credit card required. After that you pay or lose access.
  • Online: there is no browser version of PHOTO-PAINT. Corel's browser trial covers CorelDRAW only and, in Corel's words, excludes "all of the other applications" in the suite. For photo editing in a browser, use Photopea, Pixlr, Fotor or MyEdit below.
  • Corel's other paint apps: Corel Painter (digital painting) and PaintShop Pro (photo editing for Windows) are separate paid products with trial downloads. Free alternatives to both are below and in our list of free PaintShop Pro alternatives.

The 10 Best Free Corel PHOTO-PAINT Alternatives in 2027

1. Affinity: the closest free match for the whole Corel suite

Affinity is the biggest change since the last version of this list. Canva relaunched it as one free app that combines photo editing (the Pixel studio), vector design and page layout, so it replaces PHOTO-PAINT and CorelDRAW at the same time. Its official page lists live filters and adjustments, full RAW editing, an inpainting brush, healing tools, dodge and burn, batch processing with recordable macros, HDR merge and panorama stitching, plus PSD import. Free-version limit: you sign in with a free Canva account, and the Canva AI tools (generative fill, background removal, super resolution) need a Canva premium plan. Affinity runs on Windows, macOS and iPad. If you are also replacing CorelDRAW's layout side, see our sibling guide to free Affinity Publisher alternatives.

2. GIMP: the free, open-source all-rounder

GIMP is the long-standing free answer to PHOTO-PAINT: a full raster editor for retouching, restoration and composites on Linux, macOS and Windows, with no account, ads or paid tier. The GIMP 3.0 release notes list the changes that matter to Corel users: non-destructive filters, CMYK soft-proofing, import and export of CMYK JPEG, TIFF and PSD files, and a PSD export dialog that keeps clipping paths and CMYK profiles. Version 3.2.6 came out on 10 September 2026. The interface differs from PHOTO-PAINT, so expect a learning curve. Our list of open-source Corel PHOTO-PAINT alternatives covers GIMP's licence and how to move your CPT files, and free GIMP alternatives shows what to pair it with.

3. Photopea: PHOTO-PAINT-style editing in your browser

Photopea is the answer if you searched for "Corel PHOTO-PAINT online". It runs in a browser tab but processes everything on your own device, so files are not uploaded. It has layers, masks, layer styles, smart objects, adjustment layers, channels and paths, opens and saves PSD as its main format, reads camera RAW files, and even opens CorelDRAW CDR and Paint.NET PDN files. It also has one-click AI background removal. Free-version limit: the free account shows ads; a Premium account removes them.

4. Krita: free painting, and a free Corel Painter alternative

Krita describes itself as a professional free and open-source painting program. It is the free tool to use for PHOTO-PAINT's painting side and the best free alternative to Corel Painter: many brush types, layers, drawing assistants, stabilisers and animation tools. It can load and save PSD files, and it runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android tablets. Krita 5.3.4 and 6.0.4 were released on 15 September 2026. For photo retouching, GIMP, Affinity or Photopea are a better fit.

5. Paint.NET: simple and fast on Windows

Paint.NET is a free image and photo editor for Windows with layers, unlimited undo, special effects and a large plugin community. Its licence page says the free "Classic" release may be used for business, commercial, school and government work; the paid Microsoft Store version has the same features and only adds automatic updates. Version 5.1.12 came out on 8 March 2026. It is lighter and easier than GIMP, which suits PHOTO-PAINT users who mostly crop, resize, correct colour and add text.

6. Pixlr: quick online edits with AI tools

Pixlr runs in the browser and as desktop and mobile apps. Its two editors are now called Pixlr Editor (the desktop-style editor) and Pixlr Express (quick edits); older lists call them Pixlr E and Pixlr X. Both sit next to AI tools such as background and object removal, generative fill and an image generator. Free-version limit: the free version shows ads. According to the Pixlr pricing page, Pixlr Plus at €1.99 a month billed yearly (prices shown in euros from our location) is ad-free with unlimited saves and 80 AI credits a month. For more options, see our Pixlr alternatives.

7. PhotoScape X: batch edits and a friendly editor

PhotoScape X is a free all-in-one photo app for Windows 10 (version 1709 or later, 64-bit) and macOS 13 or later. Its editor has 1,000+ filters and effects, brushes, perspective crop and masks for local adjustments, and the app adds a Cut Out tool for removing backgrounds, batch editing, collages, a GIF creator, screen capture and RAW support. Batch editing is the reason to pick it: apply the same resize, frame or watermark to a whole folder of product photos at once. A paid PhotoScape X Pro version adds more features.

8. Adobe Express Photos (formerly Photoshop Express): quick AI fixes on Windows

Photoshop Express for Windows has been renamed. Its Microsoft Store listing now calls it Adobe Express Photos (formerly Photoshop Express) and says its editing tools are free, with premium features available as an extra. It removes people, objects and background clutter, erases or blurs backgrounds, auto-enhances photos, offers more than 90 filters and effects, and opens RAW files such as CR2, NEF, ARW and DNG. It also captures and annotates screenshots. It has no layers, so it is a tool for quick fixes rather than PHOTO-PAINT-style compositions.

9. Fotor: one-click touch-ups online

Fotor is a browser editor with apps, built around one-click enhancement, retouching, background removal and AI image tools. Free-version limit: its pricing page lists the Basic plan as free forever, with limited free credits, 512 MB of cloud storage and normal-quality JPG, PNG and PDF export; HD export and transparent PNGs need a paid plan. It suits quick touch-ups of headshots and product images more than detailed editing.

10. MyEdit: occasional AI edits in the browser

MyEdit is CyberLink's online AI photo editor, with tools for enhancing, background removal, object replacement and image generation. Free-version limit: its FAQ says you can start for free and claim free credits every day for AI tools, with no watermark on what you generate, but some enhancement tools such as Image Enhancer and Image Upscaler only let free users preview the result. It is useful for an occasional AI edit, not as a full PHOTO-PAINT replacement.

What Changed Since the Last Version of This List

  • Affinity was added: Affinity Photo used to be a paid app, and the new Affinity app from Canva is free.
  • Photoshop Express for Windows is now called Adobe Express Photos on the Microsoft Store.
  • Pixlr E and Pixlr X are now Pixlr Editor and Pixlr Express, and Pixlr's paid plans are built around AI credits.
  • Canva was removed from this list: it is a template-based design tool, not a PHOTO-PAINT-style image editor. See our free Canva Pro alternatives for design tools.
  • Fotor and MyEdit stay, because both still have a free plan, but both now run on AI credits, so their free versions are more limited than older lists suggest.

Moving Your PHOTO-PAINT Files to a Free Editor

Before your licence or trial ends, export the files you still need. Corel's PSD help page explains that PHOTO-PAINT objects can be kept as layers when you export to PSD. Affinity, GIMP, Photopea and Krita all open PSD files, so PSD is the safest bridge. Flatten a copy to TIFF or PNG as a backup, and export vector work from CorelDRAW separately (our free CorelDRAW alternatives guide explains how to open old CDR files).

Which Free PHOTO-PAINT Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You want one free app for everything the Corel suite did: Affinity on Windows, Mac or iPad.
  • You want free software you can keep forever, on any system: GIMP.
  • You can't install software or work on a Chromebook: Photopea in the browser.
  • You paint or used Corel Painter: Krita.
  • You do simple edits on a Windows laptop: Paint.NET, or Adobe Express Photos for one-click AI fixes.
  • You edit dozens of product photos at once: PhotoScape X.
  • You need a quick AI edit now and then: Pixlr, Fotor or MyEdit.

How Founders Use Free Photo Editors

For a startup, image editing is mostly about speed: clean product photos for a landing page, consistent social posts, a headshot for a press release, a mock-up for a pre-order page. A free editor covers all of that. Start with a product mock-up and a simple landing page to test demand before you build; our 30-day validation sprint walks you through it. For cut-out product shots, our guide to online background removal tools compares more options, and for old family or brand photos, see open-source photo restoration tools. Then put the images to work: the F/MS AI SEO Tool turns a keyword into a full blog article about your product, ready for your new visuals.
