Free GIMP Alternatives That Are Easier, Lighter or Work in Your Browser
GIMP is free, powerful and still improving: version 3.2.6 came out in September 2026, and the 3.2 series added non-destructive link layers and vector layers. But many people who download it want something else: an editor that looks like Photoshop, one that opens instantly on a Windows laptop, one that runs in a browser tab without installing anything, or a template tool for social posts. This list covers free image editors of every kind, open source, freeware and free web plans, and says exactly what each free version holds back. We checked every tool on its official website in October 2026 and removed the ones that are gone.
Quick answer: to edit PSD files in the browser with a Photoshop-like layout, use Photopea; for a professional desktop editor that is now completely free, use Affinity (Windows and Mac, free Canva account); for quick, simple edits, use Paint.NET on Windows or Pinta on Mac and Linux; for drawing, use Krita; for social media graphics, use Canva or Adobe Express; for RAW photos, use darktable.

The 10 Best Free GIMP Alternatives in 2027
1. Photopea: a Photoshop-style editor in your browser
Photopea is the fastest way to stop fighting GIMP's menus if you learned on Photoshop: its interface is modelled on Photoshop's, and it runs in any browser. It has layers, masks, layer styles, smart objects, adjustment layers, channels and paths, opens and saves PSD as its main format, and reads more than 40 other formats, including AI, PDF, CDR, PDN (Paint.NET files), Figma and camera RAW. Everything runs on your own device, so files are never uploaded. It also has one-click AI background removal. Compared with GIMP: better PSD support and nothing to install; GIMP is stronger for scripting and works offline. Free-version limit: the free account shows ads; a Premium account removes them, and one Premium team account can cover several people.
2. Affinity: a professional editor that is now completely free
Affinity used to be a paid Photoshop rival. Now that Canva has relaunched it as one app for photo editing, vector design and page layout, its official page lists the price as "$0, free": you sign in with a free Canva account and get every tool in the Pixel, Vector and Layout studios, and you can install it on as many devices as you like. Compared with GIMP: a more polished interface and vector and layout tools in the same file, but no Linux version. Free-version limit: the AI tools (generative fill, generative expand, image generation) need a Canva premium plan. It runs on Windows and macOS; an iPad version is announced but has no date yet.
3. Paint.NET: simple, fast editing on Windows
Paint.NET (its old getpaint.net address now forwards to paint.net) is a free image editor for Windows with layers, unlimited undo, effects and a large plugin community. Its licence page says the free "Classic" release may be used for personal, business, commercial, school and government work, and the paid Microsoft Store release has the same features plus automatic updates. It is freeware, not open source: you may not modify it. Version 5.1.12 came out in March 2026. Compared with GIMP: it starts faster and is easier to learn, but it is Windows-only and has fewer advanced retouching tools.
4. Pinta: Paint.NET-style simplicity on Mac and Linux
Pinta is a free, open-source drawing and image editor for Linux, Mac, Windows and BSD. It covers the everyday jobs, select, crop, rotate, resize, clone, recolour and magic wand, with live previews for effects and unlimited undo. Version 3.1.2 was released in April 2026. Compared with GIMP: far fewer features, but a much shorter path to a cropped, resized and lightly fixed image. It is the best answer if you are on a Mac or Linux and want what Windows users get from Paint.NET.
5. Krita: free painting and illustration
Krita describes itself as a professional free and open-source painting program, licensed under the GNU GPL. It has many brush types, layers, drawing assistants, stabilisers and animation tools, and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. Krita 5.3.4 and 6.0.4 came out in September 2026. Compared with GIMP: much better for drawing, comics, concept art and textures; GIMP is better for photo retouching. Our list of open-source Krita alternatives covers other painting and animation apps.
6. Pixlr: quick online edits with AI tools
Pixlr runs in the browser and as desktop and mobile apps. Its two editors are now called Pixlr Editor (the layered, desktop-style editor) and Pixlr Express (quick edits); older lists call them Pixlr E and Pixlr X. Both sit next to AI tools such as background removal, generative fill and an image generator. Free-version limit: the free version shows ads. On the Pixlr pricing page, Plus costs €2.49 a month, or €1.99 a month billed yearly, and removes ads, gives unlimited saves and 80 AI credits a month (prices shown in euros for our location). Compared with GIMP: nothing to install and much quicker for simple jobs, but you need an internet connection.

7. Canva: free graphics and quick photo edits
Canva is a design tool rather than a pixel editor, but for many founders it replaces GIMP completely for social posts, ads, thumbnails and pitch visuals. The free plan includes the drag-and-drop editor, 1.6M+ templates, 4.7M+ photos, videos, graphics and audio, one Brand Kit with three colours, 5 GB of cloud storage and access to Affinity. Free-version limit: Background Remover is a paid feature and AI use is limited. Our list of free Canva Pro alternatives shows where to get those paid features for free, and Canva vs Photoshop for YouTube thumbnails compares the two for one common job.
8. Adobe Express: Adobe's free template editor
Adobe Express is Adobe's free answer to Canva. On its pricing page, the free plan includes 100,000+ static and video templates, 5 GB of storage, standard photo, video and document editing tools and limited generative AI credits. Adobe's FAQ lists remove background and bulk resize among the premium editing features, so check before you rely on them; Premium costs €12.09 a month, billed monthly (price shown for our location), with a 30-day trial. Compared with GIMP: it is for layouts and quick marketing visuals, not detailed retouching.
9. PhotoScape X: batch edits, collages and a friendly editor
PhotoScape X is a free all-in-one photo app for Windows 10 (version 1709 or later, 64-bit) and macOS 13 or later, with native Apple silicon support. It combines a viewer, editor with filters and local adjustments, cut-out tool, batch editing, collage maker, GIF creator, screen capture and RAW support. Free-version limit: some features are only in the paid PhotoScape X Pro, which you can try without a time limit before you buy. Compared with GIMP: much easier for applying the same resize, frame or watermark to a whole folder of product photos.
10. darktable and RawTherapee: free RAW developers
GIMP is not built for developing camera RAW files. darktable is an open-source (GPL 3.0) lighttable and darkroom that edits non-destructively and manages your photo library, much like Lightroom; version 5.6.2 was released in October 2026 for Windows, macOS and Linux. RawTherapee is a free GPLv3 RAW processor with a non-destructive 32-bit engine; version 5.13 came out in July 2026. Many photographers develop in one of them and then retouch in GIMP, Affinity or Photopea.
What Changed Since the Last Version of This List
The 2025 version of this article included tools that have changed or are gone:
- Glimpse Image Editor, the GIMP fork, is no longer a safe download: its website now redirects to an unrelated advertising page. Use GIMP itself, or Pinta for a simpler editor.
- Sumopaint: the old sumopaint.com address did not load when we checked; the app now lives inside the Sumo suite of web apps. We could not find its current free terms on an official page, so it is not in the main list.
- Pixlr X and Pixlr E are now called Pixlr Express and Pixlr Editor.
- Fotor still has a free-forever Basic plan, but it is now built around limited AI credits; we cover it in our free Photoshop alternatives.
- Affinity was added: it used to be paid and is now free.
Which Free GIMP Alternative Should You Choose?
- You know Photoshop and GIMP feels backwards: Photopea in the browser, or Affinity on Windows or Mac.
- You only crop, resize and fix screenshots: Paint.NET on Windows, Pinta on Mac or Linux.
- You draw rather than retouch: Krita.
- You make social posts, ads and thumbnails: Canva or Adobe Express, with Pixlr for quick AI edits.
- You edit dozens of product photos at once: PhotoScape X.
- You shoot RAW: darktable or RawTherapee, then retouch in your editor of choice.
- You want open source only: see our separate list of open-source GIMP alternatives, which checks every licence.

How Founders Use Free Image Editors
For a startup, image editing is mostly about speed and consistency: product photos for a landing page, social posts in the same style, a headshot for a press release, mock-ups for a pre-order page. A free editor covers all of it. Pick one tool for photos and one for templates, save your brand colours in both, and keep a folder of reusable layouts. Remove backgrounds for product shots with one of the online background removal tools we tested, and if you need visuals you don't have, use one of the free AI image generators without watermarks. A quick mock-up and a simple landing page are often enough to test demand before you build, which is the idea behind our 30-day validation sprint. The F/MS AI SEO Tool then turns a keyword into a blog article to put those images in.
