Open-Source Airtable AI Alternatives (2027): Self-Hosted Databases With AI Fields, Assistants and Local Models, Checked for Licence and Cost

Open-Source Airtable AI Alternatives: Self-Hosted Databases With AI Fields, Assistants and Local Models

Airtable's AI can now build a whole app from a description, fill fields with AI agents and answer questions about your data, but it runs in Airtable's cloud, it uses Airtable's credits and you cannot host it yourself. If you want an Airtable-style database with AI that you control, ideally with your own API key or a model running on your own server, the open-source options look very different from a plain list of Airtable clones: some have AI built into the free edition, some only in paid plans, and some have none at all. We checked every tool below on its official website, documentation and GitHub in October 2026 and sorted them by how much real AI you get when you host them yourself.
Quick answer: for the closest open-source match to Airtable AI, use Baserow: it has an AI prompt field and an AI assistant, and self-hosters can plug in Ollama, Anthropic, Mistral or OpenAI (the AI field needs a Premium licence). For free AI that works with any local model, choose Grist (AI formula help) or NocoBase (AI employees in the Community Edition); for a fully MIT-licensed builder with a free AI copilot, choose Saltcorn; and for the most AI-native experience, Teable, keeping in mind that its self-hosted AI needs a paid licence.

What Airtable AI Does in 2027 and What It Costs

To know what you are replacing: on its AI page (checked October 2026), Airtable describes Omni, an assistant that builds apps, tables, interfaces and automations from a plain-language description and also analyses your data and researches the web, plus Field Agents that do research, analysis and content work across many records, for example enriching leads with company data or sorting feedback by sentiment. Enterprise customers can choose which models are switched on, including models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta, and Airtable says model providers do not keep customer data or train on it. You can also reach your bases from Claude or ChatGPT through MCP.
AI is paid in credits. According to Airtable's AI billing page, the Free plan includes 500 credits per user with editor rights, Team 15,000 per billable collaborator, Business 20,000 and Enterprise Scale 25,000 per paid user, pooled across the workspace or organisation. Building apps and agents with Omni does not use credits, but each Omni answer costs 10. Extra packs cost from $20 a month for 10,000 credits up to $400 for 200,000, and Free users have to upgrade to Team to get more. Since 24 June 2025 there is no separate per-seat AI charge; on the Airtable pricing page Team costs $20 and Business $45 per seat per month billed annually. The open-source tools below give you the database for free; the AI part is free only when the AI features are in the free edition and you bring the model.

The Best Open-Source Airtable AI Alternatives in 2027

1. Baserow: the closest open-source Airtable with AI fields

Baserow is a no-code database that looks and works like Airtable, with an application builder, dashboards and automations on top. Its licence file puts the open-source edition under MIT, while premium and enterprise features have their own licences. For AI it has three parts. The AI prompt field fills a column from a prompt that can reference other fields: it writes summaries, classifies rows into fixed choices and reads PNG, PDF, DOCX, TXT and Markdown files. Kuma, the AI assistant built in since version 2.0, creates tables, views, fields and formulas and can build whole applications from a request. Baserow also has an MCP server for outside AI tools. Cloud users get OpenAI models by default; self-hosters can configure OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama, OpenRouter or Mistral, so the data can stay on their own server. The catch: the AI prompt field needs a Premium plan or higher ($10 per user per month billed yearly in the cloud). Version 2.4.1 came out in October 2026.

2. Grist: free AI formula help with any local model

Grist is a relational spreadsheet: typed columns like a database, formulas in Python, and tables, cards, charts and forms side by side, with cell-level access rules. The free grist-core code (Apache-2.0) includes an AI Formula Assistant that writes formulas for you. It works with OpenAI, with many other models through OpenRouter, and with any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, including local servers such as llama-cpp-python and LM Studio. grist-core also has a built-in MCP endpoint, so Claude, ChatGPT and other AI clients can read and edit your Grist documents. The newer Grist Assistant goes further: it answers questions about your data, creates or changes records, tables and pages, and builds widgets. It needs the full edition of Grist; on Grist's cloud, free plans get 200 Assistant credits and Business plans 2,000 a month, at one credit per chat message. Organisations with less than $1 million in total annual income can request a free activation key for the full self-hosted edition. Version 1.7.22 came out on 29 October 2026.

3. NocoBase: AI employees in the free Community Edition

NocoBase is an open-source platform for building business systems such as a CRM, inventory or ticketing tool from a data model, which suits Airtable bases that have grown into a real system. Its AI comes as AI employees: assistants that get your business context and work inside the system, helping with analysis, questions and form filling in the interface and with document recognition, risk monitoring and task routing in the background. Each AI employee has its own role with field-level read and write permissions, and every change is traceable in audit logs. Its LLM service documentation marks AI employees as available from the Community Edition and lists OpenAI, Gemini, Claude, DeepSeek, Qwen, Kimi and Ollama local models. NocoBase also exposes MCP, HTTP APIs and a CLI, so coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor and Codex can build and change the system. Read the licence first: it is Apache-2.0 with supplementary terms that forbid offering a public no-code, low-code or AI platform service built on NocoBase. New builds came out in October 2026.

4. Saltcorn: an MIT database builder with a free AI copilot

Saltcorn is a small, MIT-licensed no-code builder for web and mobile database apps. Build 1.6.1 added a loop-based AI copilot that builds pages and workflows from a description. The copilot plugin is MIT-licensed too, and Saltcorn's large-language-model plugin connects it to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Vertex AI, any OpenAI-compatible API, or a local model through Ollama or llama.cpp. That makes it one of the few options where both the database builder and the AI parts are free and fully open source. It is less polished than Airtable, so expect more setup. Beta builds of version 1.7 came out in October 2026.

5. Teable: the most AI-native, but self-hosted AI is paid

Teable looks like a spreadsheet but runs on PostgreSQL, and AI is at its centre: AI chat that asks, analyses and changes your data in plain language, an App Builder agent that builds an app from a description and deploys it to its own URL, AI automations triggered by record changes, schedules and webhooks, and AI field filling in bulk. Its homepage also offers to move a whole Airtable base over in one click. The Community Edition is AGPL-3.0 (packages MIT) and free to self-host, and Teable says self-hosters can use their own models and keys. The catch: its README says paid plans unlock the AI features in the official image with a licence key, and the simple Standalone install has no AI at all. In the cloud, the Free plan includes AI field, AI chat and App Builder with 200 one-time AI credits; Pro costs $13 per seat per month billed yearly with 2,000 credits per seat. Teable ships new builds several times a day.

6. Budibase: AI agents on top of your tables

Budibase is an open-source platform for internal apps, data tables and automations (GPLv3 overall, with paid features under the Business Source License). Its AI comes as agents: according to Budibase's Agents announcement of March 2026, they connect a language model to the tables, APIs, apps and automations you allow, can sit in an app as a chatbox or run in Slack, Discord or Teams, and work with any model that has an OpenAI-compatible API, including locally hosted ones. The free self-hosted plan lists unlimited agents, and you connect your own AI provider; cloud plans start at $19 a month for Pro with 2,000 Budibase AI credits. Choose it if you want AI assistants that act on your data rather than AI inside spreadsheet cells. Version 3.51 came out in October 2026.

7. APITable: Airtable-like tables, but AI only in the cloud

APITable is an AGPL-3.0 visual database with an Airtable-style grid, API-first design and embeddable views. Its AI lives elsewhere: the README sends you to the cloud-hosted AI version at AITable.ai, and lists the ChatGPT integration among the features of the hosted and Enterprise versions. The open-source repository is also slow: after 1.13.0-beta.1 in May 2025, the next release, 1.14.0-beta, came in September 2026. Use it only if you want an Airtable-like grid and plan to add AI yourself through its API.

8. ToolJet and Mathesar: open source, no AI in the free edition

ToolJet (AGPL-3.0) is an internal tool builder with its own database. Its README is clear that the free Community Edition is the visual builder, while AI app generation, the AI query builder and AI debugging belong to ToolJet AI, the enterprise product. Mathesar (GPL-3.0) gives non-technical people a spreadsheet-like view and forms on an existing PostgreSQL database; it has no AI features and calls itself a public beta (version 0.12.0 came out in July 2026). Both are good if you need the database part and will connect AI later through an automation tool.

Airtable AI Alternatives That Changed, Stopped or Are Not Open Source

The 2025 version of this article and many other lists still recommend tools that no longer fit an open-source Airtable AI shortlist:
  • NocoDB: still very active and Airtable-like, but its licence file (updated 29 January 2026) now uses the Sustainable Use License, and its website calls it a "Fair Source" product. It is source-available, not open source.
  • Rowy: the spreadsheet interface for Firestore has had no release since version 3.0.0 in October 2023 and no code change since November 2024. Treat it as unmaintained.
  • Undb: its GitHub repository is archived, and the README says the project has moved to Teable.
  • SeaTable: often called open source, but its README lists the core table server (dtable-server) under a proprietary licence; only supporting parts are open source. SeaTable Server is free for up to 3 users, and AI credits come with its cloud plans.
  • Directus: a data platform under the Monospace Sustainable Core License, which allows internal use but forbids competing commercial offerings; each version becomes GPL-3.0 only four years after release.
  • OpenProject and LibreOffice Calc: a project management tool and a desktop spreadsheet, not shared databases. For boards with AI, see our open-source Trello AI alternatives.

Which Open-Source Airtable AI Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You want Airtable's look and AI fields, with your own model: Baserow, with a Premium licence for the AI field.
  • You want free AI with a model on your own server: Grist for formula help, NocoBase for AI employees, Saltcorn for an AI copilot.
  • Your base has grown into a CRM or ERP: NocoBase.
  • You want AI to build the whole app and do not mind paying: Teable, in the cloud or with a paid self-hosted licence.
  • You want AI agents that act on your data in Slack or Teams: Budibase.
  • You only need the database and will add AI later: APITable, Mathesar or ToolJet's Community Edition.

How Founders Use Open-Source Databases With AI

For an early-stage startup, an Airtable-style base is often the first real system: a lead list, a content calendar, an investor pipeline or a product backlog. AI helps most with the repetitive parts: summarising call notes into a column, sorting feedback into categories, enriching leads and drafting replies. Keep the AI on clear, checkable jobs and keep a human on decisions. If the base holds customer or investor data, a self-hosted tool with a local model keeps it on your own server. Before you pick a platform, read the 8 biggest mistakes when choosing no-code tools.
When the base needs a proper app on top, compare the open-source AppSheet alternatives and the open-source Retool alternatives; to connect it to the rest of your stack, use one of the open-source Zapier alternatives; and to chart what is in it, try the open-source Metabase alternatives. For docs and wikis next to your data, see the open-source Notion AI alternatives, and if you code, the open-source GitHub Copilot alternatives run on the same local models.
