Open-Source Corel PHOTO-PAINT Alternatives (2027): 10 Free Photo Editors for CPT, PSD and Print Work Outside the CorelDRAW Suite

Open-Source Corel PHOTO-PAINT Alternatives for Photo Editing Outside the CorelDRAW Suite

Corel PHOTO-PAINT is the bitmap editor that comes with CorelDRAW Graphics Suite. Many print shops, sign makers and Windows designers use it next to CorelDRAW for retouching photos, cutting out products, preparing images for print and saving work as CPT files. If you are leaving the suite, or only need the photo side of it, an open-source editor can do most of that work for free. We checked every tool below on its official website and GitHub on 31 October 2026: the licence, the latest release, whether it handles PSD files (the format that carries your PHOTO-PAINT layers out of the suite) and which PHOTO-PAINT job it really replaces. Tools that are free but not open source, or no longer developed, are listed separately.
Quick answer: for the closest open-source match to Corel PHOTO-PAINT, use GIMP: layers, retouching, PSD import and export and CMYK export for print. Add darktable or RawTherapee for RAW photos, digiKam for a photo library with batch edits, Krita if you paint, Pinta or Photoflare CE for quick fixes, and Hugin for panoramas. Before you cancel, export your CPT files to PSD or TIFF from PHOTO-PAINT, because we found no open-source editor that opens CPT files.

What Corel PHOTO-PAINT Is in 2027 and What It Costs

Corel no longer sells PHOTO-PAINT on its own. The Corel PHOTO-PAINT page says it comes with CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, runs on Windows and Mac, supports PSD files and offers non-destructive, layer-based editing. The current version adds AI tools: background removal, AI Mask from Subject, image generation from text prompts with models such as Flux, Stable Diffusion and Nano Banana, and AI upsampling and artifact removal. Classic tools such as Smart Carver, Perspective Correction and image stitching are still there.
On the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2026 page (checked 31 October 2026, default view, prices in euros for our location, including VAT) the Annual Plan costs €369 a year and the 2026 version as a one-time purchase costs €779. There is a 15-day free trial. AI features use credits: subscribers get 2,000 a month, while one-time buyers get 2,000 once. Every editor below is free; you give up Corel's AI tools and CPT files, and you keep your money.

The Best Open-Source Corel PHOTO-PAINT Alternatives in 2027

1. GIMP: the closest all-round PHOTO-PAINT replacement

GIMP is free software for Linux, macOS and Windows, and the editor most PHOTO-PAINT users should try first. It covers the same core jobs: layers, masks, retouching, colour correction and compositing. GIMP 3.0 made filters non-destructive by default, so you can re-edit or switch them off later, much like PHOTO-PAINT's non-destructive layer workflow. For files coming out of the Corel suite, its 3.0 release notes list better PSD import and export, a PSD export dialog that keeps clipping paths, CMYK profiles and metadata, CMYK import and export for JPEG, TIFF, PSD and JPEG XL, and soft-proofing. That matters for print and sign work. Version 3.2.6 was released on 10 September 2026.

2. Krita: for painting over photos and digital artwork

Krita calls itself a professional free and open-source painting program, and it is licensed under the GNU GPL. If you used PHOTO-PAINT's brushes, paint tools and effects more than its photo tools, Krita is the better fit: many brush types, layers, drawing assistants, stabilizers and animation. Its features page says it can load and save PSD files, so artwork exported from PHOTO-PAINT as PSD comes across with its layers. Krita 5.3.4 and 6.0.4 were released on 15 September 2026 for Windows, macOS and Linux.

3. Pinta: quick edits without a learning curve

Pinta is a free, open-source drawing and image editor for Linux, Mac, Windows and BSD. Its README describes it as a clone of Paint.NET 3.0, and its own code is MIT-licensed. It handles the everyday jobs a shop does many times a day: select, crop, rotate, resize, clone, recolor and magic wand, plus effects and adjustments with live previews and unlimited undo. Use it when GIMP feels like too much for a quick product photo or web banner. Version 3.1.2 came out in April 2026.

4. LazPaint: raster and vector layers in one light app

LazPaint is a free, cross-platform image editor with raster and vector layers, written in Lazarus (Free Pascal) and licensed GPL-3.0. That mix is close to how CorelDRAW users think: shapes and text stay editable on vector layers while photos sit on bitmap layers. It reads and writes layered images, adds layer effects such as drop shadow and stroke through scripts, and has Windows installers, a portable version, Linux packages, macOS and BSD builds. The latest release, 7.3, dates from May 2025, but the code is still being updated in October 2026.

5. Photoflare CE: fast fixes and filters

Photoflare Community Edition is a completely free, GPL-3.0 desktop editor for quick image filters and adjustments. Note the editions: only CE is open source. Photoflare Lens, a RAW developer, has a free edition, and Photoflare Studio, with layers and advanced brushes, is commercial. Use CE for fast corrections, not layered PHOTO-PAINT projects. Version 1.7.5 was released in October 2026.

6. darktable: RAW photos and colour management to print

darktable is an open-source lighttable and darkroom for photographers, released under the GPL 3.0. It edits non-destructively, so your original file is never changed, and its colour management carries fidelity through to print. It also offers GPU acceleration, tethered shooting for some camera brands and Lua scripting for repetitive tasks. PHOTO-PAINT users who mostly develop camera RAW files get a much deeper RAW workflow here. Version 5.6.2 was released in October 2026.

7. RawTherapee: a second RAW developer

RawTherapee is a free, cross-platform RAW processing program under the GPLv3, with a non-destructive 32-bit floating-point engine, modern demosaicing and tools such as pixel-shift compositing, dark frame subtraction and flat field correction. It has no library like darktable, which some photographers prefer. Version 5.13 was released on 26 July 2026 for Linux, Windows and macOS.

8. digiKam: a photo library with batch editing

digiKam is an open-source digital asset manager and image editor (GPL-2.0). It imports photos from cameras and phones, organises them with albums, tags and labels, recognises faces, adds AI tags and ratings, and applies edits to many photos at once with batch processing. For a shop that prepares hundreds of product or event photos, that batch work replaces a lot of manual PHOTO-PAINT clicks. Version 9.1.0, released in June 2026, runs on Linux, Windows and macOS.

9. Hugin: panorama stitching

PHOTO-PAINT can stitch several images into one. Hugin is the open-source tool for that job: a panorama stitcher licensed under the GPLv2. It is not a general photo editor, so pair it with GIMP. The current stable release is 2025.0.1 (December 2025), and a 2026.0 beta was posted in October 2026.

10. Graphite: one to watch

Graphite is a free, open-source (Apache-2.0) vector graphics editor and animation engine, still in alpha, with a nondestructive workflow that mixes layers and nodes. Image editing, digital painting and page layout are on its list of upcoming tools, so it does not replace PHOTO-PAINT yet. Its Alpha 4 release series was current in October 2026.

How to Move Your CPT Files and Corel Workflow

CPT is PHOTO-PAINT's own bitmap format, and Corel's help page on CPT says it saves masks, floating objects and lenses with the image. Outside the suite, support is thin: the freeware viewer XnView MP lists read support only for the old Corel PhotoPaint 6.0 CPT format, and we found no open-source editor that lists CPT among its formats. Plan the move while you still have access:
  1. Export layered work to PSD. According to Corel's PSD export notes, PHOTO-PAINT objects become PSD layers and text stays editable, but Smart Filter effects are not kept and 32-bit channels are converted to 16-bit. Open the PSD in GIMP or Krita.
  2. Export finished images to TIFF or PNG as a flat archive copy, so you can open them anywhere even if a layered file fails.
  3. Keep print settings in GIMP: attach your printer's CMYK profile, use soft-proofing, and export CMYK TIFF, JPEG or PSD for the print shop.
  4. Move the CorelDRAW side separately: vector CDR files need a vector tool. Our open-source CorelDRAW alternatives by job cover Inkscape, Scribus, cutter and laser tools, and which of them open CDR files.
  5. Use the 15-day CorelDRAW trial if you only need to convert a batch of old CPT files and no longer have a licence.

Not Open Source, Discontinued or Changed Since the 2025 Version

The old version of this list mixed open-source editors with free closed tools and one vector app. What changed:
  • Photopea: a free photo editor in the browser, but closed source. It opens many formats, including CDR, but CPT is not on its format list. See our free Photoshop alternatives for free closed tools.
  • Paint.NET: free of charge, but its licence forbids modifying the software, so it is freeware, not open source. Pinta is the open-source clone of its older version.
  • MyPaint: still open source, but its last release is 2.0.1 from May 2020. Krita is the maintained choice for painting.
  • Inkscape: an excellent open-source vector editor, but it replaces CorelDRAW, not PHOTO-PAINT. It moved to our open-source Inkscape alternatives and CorelDRAW posts.
  • Added: LazPaint, Photoflare CE and digiKam, which cover PHOTO-PAINT jobs the old list missed, and Graphite as a project to watch.

Which Open-Source PHOTO-PAINT Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You want one editor for most PHOTO-PAINT jobs: GIMP, especially for PSD files and CMYK print output.
  • You paint or illustrate over photos: Krita.
  • You do quick crops, resizes and fixes all day: Pinta or Photoflare CE.
  • You like mixing editable shapes and photos, CorelDRAW style: LazPaint.
  • You shoot RAW: darktable, or RawTherapee if you do not need a library.
  • You manage many product or event photos: digiKam for organising and batch edits, then GIMP for the detailed work.
  • You stitch panoramas: Hugin.

How Founders Use Open-Source Photo Editors

Early-stage founders rarely need a full design suite. Most of their image work is product photos, social media posts, pitch deck visuals and print for events. A free stack of GIMP, digiKam and darktable covers that without a yearly licence, and the money goes into the product instead. Keep one folder of brand assets (logo, colours, fonts) and export everything from it; our guide to AI tools for startup naming and logo design helps you create those assets, and this overview of graphic design programs for aspiring designers explains the main tool types. FAQ About Open-Source Corel PHOTO-PAINT Alternatives

What is the best open-source alternative to Corel PHOTO-PAINT?

GIMP. It covers layered editing, retouching and compositing, imports and exports PSD files, and exports CMYK JPEG, TIFF, PSD and JPEG XL for print. Version 3.2.6 was released on 10 September 2026.

Can I buy Corel PHOTO-PAINT on its own?

No. Corel's PHOTO-PAINT page says it comes with CorelDRAW Graphics Suite. When we checked on 31 October 2026, the suite cost €369 a year or €779 as a one-time purchase of the 2026 version (euro prices including VAT shown for our location), with a 15-day free trial.

Can GIMP open CPT files?

We found no CPT support in GIMP's release notes or in any other open-source editor. Export your CPT files from PHOTO-PAINT to PSD to keep layers, or to TIFF or PNG for flat copies, and open those in GIMP or Krita.

What happens to my PHOTO-PAINT layers in a PSD file?

According to Corel's help, PHOTO-PAINT objects are saved as PSD layers and text stays editable, but Smart Filter effects are not kept and 32-bit channels are converted to 16-bit.

Is there an open-source PHOTO-PAINT alternative for print and sign shops?

GIMP is the best fit: since version 3.0 it supports CMYK import and export for JPEG, TIFF, PSD and JPEG XL and soft-proofing with a CMYK profile. Pair it with Inkscape for the vector CorelDRAW side.

Is Paint.NET open source?

No. Paint.NET is free of charge, but its licence forbids modifying the software, so it is freeware. Pinta is an MIT-licensed open-source clone of Paint.NET 3.0.

Is Photopea open source?

No. Photopea is a free browser-based photo editor, but its code is closed. It also does not list CPT among the formats it opens.

Which open-source editor is best for RAW photos instead of PHOTO-PAINT?

darktable, a non-destructive RAW developer with a photo library and colour management to print, or RawTherapee if you only need RAW development. Both are GPLv3.

Do these alternatives have AI tools like PHOTO-PAINT's?

Not in the same way. PHOTO-PAINT 2026 includes AI image generation, background removal and AI masking paid with Corel AI credits. Among the open-source tools here, digiKam offers AI tagging and face recognition; for generative edits you would add a separate AI tool.
