Open-Source CorelDRAW Alternatives by Job (2027): 10 Tools for Print Layout, Vinyl Cutting, Laser, Embroidery and Opening CDR Files, Licences Checked

Open-Source CorelDRAW Alternatives for Every Job CorelDRAW Does

CorelDRAW is commercial software: Corel sells the Graphics Suite as a subscription or a one-time licence for Windows, Mac and the web, and there is no open-source edition. But CorelDRAW users rarely do just one thing. Sign makers cut vinyl, workshops send jobs to laser cutters, embroidery shops digitise logos, print shops lay out brochures, and almost everyone has a folder of old .cdr files. Open-source software covers all of those jobs, usually with one specialised tool per job instead of one big suite. For this list we only included projects with a real open-source licence. We checked each licence, the latest release and whether the tool can open CorelDRAW files on the project's own website or code repository on 29 October 2026.
Want a general list of free, open-source vector editors for Windows, Mac and Linux? Start with our CorelDRAW open source alternatives guide; this article goes job by job. Looking for free tools of any licence instead? See our free CorelDRAW alternatives. Comparing paid suites such as Affinity, Adobe Illustrator and Xara, with prices? Read our main guide to CorelDRAW alternatives.
Quick answer: the open-source replacement for CorelDRAW itself is Inkscape, which also opens CorelDRAW files from versions 7 to X4. For brochures and print layouts, use Scribus; to open a .cdr file quickly, LibreOffice Draw; instead of Corel PHOTO-PAINT, GIMP or Krita; for technical drawings, LibreCAD; for vinyl cutters, Inkcut; for laser cutters, VisiCut; for machine embroidery, Ink/Stitch; and for animation, Synfig Studio.

The 10 Best Open-Source CorelDRAW Alternatives in 2027

1. Inkscape: the open-source CorelDRAW replacement

Inkscape is the open-source vector editor closest to CorelDRAW: Bézier and node tools, shapes, text on paths, boolean operations, gradients, layers and precise alignment, on Windows, macOS and Linux. According to the licence file in its official repository, most of its source code is under the GNU GPL version 2 or later, and the complete program is covered by GPL version 3 or later. Version 1.4.4 was tagged on 5 May 2026.
For CorelDRAW users, three details matter. Its import filter reads CorelDRAW files from versions 7 to X4, plus CorelDRAW templates (.cdt) and exchange files (.ccx and .cmx), using the open-source libcdr library. Its Trace Bitmap tool, built on Potrace, does the job of CorelDRAW's PowerTRACE: it turns a scanned logo into editable vectors. And it exports what workshops need: PDF for print, DXF (R12 and R14) for cutting plotters and laser software, and HPGL, and it can send a drawing straight to a cutting plotter with its Plot extension.

2. Scribus: open-source print layout that imports CorelDRAW files

Scribus is open-source desktop publishing software under the GNU GPL (version 2 or later), for brochures, flyers, magazines, posters and books, with CMYK and spot colours, ICC colour management and print-ready PDF output. It replaces the page-layout side of CorelDRAW. Its source code includes a Corel Draw importer for .cdr, .cdt, .ccx and .cmx files, which, in the importer's own words, imports most Corel Draw files and converts their vector data into Scribus objects; it uses the same libcdr library as Inkscape. Files for version 1.6.7 for Windows, macOS and Linux were published on the project's official download page on 27 October 2026. Draw the artwork in Inkscape and lay out the pages in Scribus.

3. LibreOffice Draw: the quickest way to open a CDR file

LibreOffice Draw is the drawing app in LibreOffice, released under the Mozilla Public License v2.0. Its import filters include Corel Draw (.cdr) and Corel Presentation Exchange (.cmx) files, read through libcdr, a library the LibreOffice project develops for reading and converting files produced by CorelDRAW (libcdr is also MPL 2.0). Draw is not as strong as Inkscape for illustration, but it is ideal for flyers, simple posters and diagrams, and many people already have it installed: open the .cdr file, check it, and export a PDF. Version 26.8.2 is the current download on LibreOffice's website.

4. GIMP: open-source photo editing instead of Corel PHOTO-PAINT

The CorelDRAW Graphics Suite also includes Corel PHOTO-PAINT for photos. The open-source answer is GIMP, a raster image editor released under the GNU General Public License, for retouching photos, cutting out products, preparing images for print and the web, and making mock-ups. It is not a vector editor, so use it next to Inkscape, not instead of it. Version 3.2.6 was released on 10 September 2026. For more photo editors, see our list of open-source Photoshop alternatives.

5. Krita: open-source painting and illustration

Krita is a free and open-source painting program, licensed under the GNU GPL, for digital painting, illustration, comics and concept art. If you used CorelDRAW for hand-drawn illustration rather than precise vectors, Krita's brushes will suit you better; it also has vector layers for clean lines and shapes. Krita 5.3.4 and 6.0.4 were released together on 15 September 2026. Our list of open-source Procreate alternatives compares it with other painting apps.

6. LibreCAD: open-source 2D CAD for technical drawings

LibreCAD is a free, open-source 2D CAD application for Windows, macOS and Linux, released under the GNU GPL version 2 and based on the community edition of QCAD. It replaces the technical-drawing side of CorelDRAW (Corel sells a separate Technical Suite for that): floor plans, parts, panels and anything that needs exact dimensions. It works with DXF, the format most CNC, laser-cutting and sheet-metal services ask for. It cannot open .cdr files, so export a DXF from Inkscape first. Version 2.2.1.6 was released on 17 October 2026.

7. Inkcut: open-source software for vinyl cutters

Inkcut is an open-source application (GPL v3) for controlling 2D plotters, vinyl cutters, engravers and CNC machines, made to work with Inkscape. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Raspberry Pi and speaks the common cutter languages HPGL, GPGL, DMPL, CAMM and GCODE. For sign makers and sticker sellers who used CorelDRAW with a cutting plug-in, Inkscape plus Inkcut is the open-source workflow: design and weed lines in Inkscape, then cut. Version 2.1.8 was released on 22 June 2026.

8. VisiCut: open-source software for laser cutters

VisiCut prepares, saves and sends jobs to laser cutters, and is licensed under the GNU LGPL v3. It runs on Linux, macOS and Windows and supports machines such as the Epilog Zing, Mini and Helix, LAOS, Smoothieboard, LTT and K40. It reads SVG, EPS and DXF files, so you design in Inkscape and send from VisiCut, with a camera preview to place the graphic on the material. Many fab labs and makerspaces use it instead of the manufacturers' software. Its last numbered release, 2.1, dates from May 2024, but new builds were still being published in October 2026.

9. Ink/Stitch: open-source embroidery design

Ink/Stitch is an open-source machine embroidery design platform built on Inkscape, released under the GPL v3. Embroidery and apparel businesses are big CorelDRAW users, and Ink/Stitch is the open-source route: you draw or import the logo in Inkscape (including old CorelDRAW files), turn shapes into satin, fill and running stitches, add lettering, and export to machine formats such as PES, DST, JEF and EXP. It installs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Version 3.3.0 was released on 31 July 2026.

10. Synfig Studio: open-source 2D animation

Synfig Studio is free and open-source 2D animation software licensed under the GNU GPL v3, for Windows, Linux and macOS. CorelDRAW has no real animation tools, so this is the open-source answer when a logo or illustration needs to move: Synfig animates vector shapes with tweening, so you do not have to draw every frame. The current stable release is 1.4.5 from May 2024; development versions continue, with 1.5.5 published in March 2026. For web animation formats such as Lottie, see our LottieFiles alternatives.

Opening CDR Files With Open-Source Software

Inkscape, Scribus and LibreOffice Draw all read CorelDRAW files through the same open-source library, libcdr. That has two consequences. First, results are best with older files: Inkscape labels its filter for CorelDRAW 7 to X4. Second, if a file fails in one of them, it will often fail in the others too, because the same library does the reading. In that case, ask the sender to export a PDF or SVG, or export it yourself with CorelDRAW's 15-day free trial. No open-source tool saves files in CorelDRAW's own format, so keep SVG for web graphics and cutting files, and PDF for print. Both open in CorelDRAW if a client or printer still uses it.
  • File types: Inkscape and Scribus import .cdr (drawings), .cdt (templates), .ccx and .cmx (exchange files); LibreOffice Draw imports .cdr and .cmx.
  • Fonts: install the fonts used in the file before you open it, or replace them after import. Ask for text converted to curves if you only need to print or cut.
  • Colours: Inkscape is mainly an RGB editor. For CMYK and spot colours, finish the print file in Scribus and ask your printer for a proof.
  • Cutting and engraving files: export DXF or SVG from Inkscape, then cut with Inkcut or VisiCut, or embroider with Ink/Stitch.

Removed From This List: Discontinued or Not Open Source

The 2025 version of this article included several tools that are discontinued, abandoned or were never open source:
  • Gravit Designer: discontinued and never open source. Its later address, designer.io, now redirects to CorelDRAW Go, Corel's paid, closed-source browser app, and the old gravitdesigner.com domain now leads to a domain-for-sale page.
  • Vectornator: renamed Linearity. vectornator.io now redirects to linearity.io, and the app is Linearity Curve, a closed-source app with a free plan and paid Pro plan, covered in our CorelDRAW alternatives guide.
  • Skencil: abandoned. The latest news on its website dates from 31 October 2010, when a 1.0 alpha was announced, and its last stable version, 0.6.17, came out in June 2005.
  • Xara LX (Xara Xtreme for Linux): discontinued. Its website still offers version 0.7 and still describes the Linux port as almost complete; Xara's current products are closed-source and paid.
  • Vectr: free to try but not open source, and now an AI design tool that uses credits to open EPS, AI and PDF files. See our free Vectr alternatives.
  • sK1: open source and once promising for CorelDRAW users, but its download page still only offers a 2.0 release candidate. Inkscape is the maintained choice.

Which Open-Source CorelDRAW Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You design logos, signs and illustrations: Inkscape.
  • You lay out brochures, menus, magazines or books: Scribus, with artwork from Inkscape.
  • You just need to open or convert an old .cdr file: Inkscape, or LibreOffice Draw if it is already installed.
  • You edited photos in Corel PHOTO-PAINT: GIMP. You paint or draw by hand: Krita.
  • You make technical drawings or DXF files for CNC work: LibreCAD.
  • You cut vinyl, stickers or signs: Inkscape plus Inkcut. You run a laser cutter: Inkscape plus VisiCut.
  • You digitise embroidery: Ink/Stitch inside Inkscape.
  • You want your logo to move: Synfig Studio.
  • You need a single program with CorelDRAW's breadth and support: no open-source project does it all; compare the free and paid options in our CorelDRAW alternatives guide.
The same open-source approach works for the rest of your design stack: see our guides to open-source Illustrator alternatives, open-source Inkscape alternatives (tools that take Inkscape files further), open-source Affinity Photo alternatives, open-source Figma alternatives and open-source Blender alternatives for 3D. For free tools with closed licences, read free Illustrator alternatives and free Photoshop alternatives.

Open-Source Licences: What They Mean for Your Business

Every licence on this list (GPL, LGPL and MPL) lets you use the software for any purpose, including paid client work, and none of them claims rights over the logos, signs, layouts or embroidery files you make. Their conditions only apply if you change and redistribute the software itself: then the GPL asks you to share your changes under the same licence, and the MPL applies that rule file by file. For a small print shop, sign maker or embroidery business, that means no licence fees, no subscription renewals and no risk of losing access to your tools, and files saved as SVG, PDF or DXF that any future software can open.

How Founders Use Open-Source Design Tools

Many CorelDRAW users run small businesses: a sticker shop, a sign studio, custom T-shirts, engraved gifts, embroidered merchandise. Open-source tools let you start one of these with nothing to pay for software. Design in Inkscape, cut with Inkcut, engrave with VisiCut or embroider with Ink/Stitch, and sell online; our guides to print-on-demand designs, Etsy shop management and freelance illustration services show how others turn design skills into income. Before you buy a cutter or a laser, test demand with a few pre-orders; our 30-day validation sprint walks you through it.
