EU Funding for Startups and SMEs in 2026

EIT Food Funding for Startups: Accelerators, Calls and How to Apply

TL;DR: EIT Food funds agrifood startups through several small, equity-free subgrants and programmes. Pre-company teams in one of seven venture builders can get up to €30,000 from the Seedbed Venture Catalyst (last cut-off 27 January 2027). Young companies with a prototype can join the EIT Food Accelerator Network: €3,000 for every startup, plus €50,000, €30,000 or €20,000 for the top three in each of six hubs. Alumni can then seek up to €2 million in equity. Below: a deadline calendar, a scored fit check, a copyable pitch template and a worked founder example.
EIT Food is the EU's food innovation community, and founders searching for "the EIT Food grant" find a dozen programme names: Seedbed, FAN, RisingFoodStars, Catalyse. This guide sorts them by stage, so you can see which door is open to you in the next three months and what you can get.
All facts come from EIT Food's own website, its call guidelines and terms for 2026, and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), checked on 31 October 2026.

What EIT Food is and how it funds startups

The EIT announced EIT Food in November 2016 as the winner of its "Food4Future" call. It is one of the EIT's Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs), funded by the European Commission and headquartered in Leuven, Belgium. Its partners include companies, universities and research centres from more than 20 European countries.
EIT Food does not publish one open call for "startup funding". It passes EU money to founders as lump-sum subgrants inside its programmes. That is cascade funding: the EU funds EIT Food, and EIT Food runs the selection. Our guide to cascade funding explains how such open calls work in general.
Its own scorecard, on the "About us" page:
  • 533 startups and scaleups supported;
  • €70 million in direct financial support through grants and investments;
  • €224 million in investment attracted by the startups and scaleups it supported;
  • 233 partners in its network.
Its entrepreneurship page shows other totals (€50 million and €407 million), so treat them as indicative.

Seedbed Venture Catalyst: up to €30,000 before you incorporate

Seedbed is EIT Food's pre-company programme for researchers, technology owners and aspiring founders. It now runs through seven venture builders: Carbon13, Enviu, FOOD FOUNDERS, Fresh Ventures, Ivoro, Kost Studio and Zinc.
The current call for startups has a total budget of €480,000 and pays up to €30,000 per venture project as a pre-fixed lump sum for a six-month project. According to the call guidelines:
  • you must be in a current cohort of one of the seven venture builders and not yet incorporated;
  • 50% is paid when the contract is signed, the rest after two deliverables (a progress report and proof of coaching costs);
  • the money can cover co-founders' subsistence, legal, regulatory or IP experts, outsourced product development, pilots, test batches, software, fundraising support, coaching and meetings with partners in Europe;
  • it cannot pay for the venture builder's own services, and other EU funding cannot count as co-funding;
  • applications go through the MyEITFood portal; evaluation takes about a week after each cut-off.
The remaining cut-offs are 4 November 2026, 16 December 2026 and 27 January 2027 (12:00 CET), when the call ends. If you are not in one of the seven programmes, this call is closed to you. Apply to a venture builder first.

EIT Food Accelerator Network: the main door for young companies

The Accelerator Network (FAN) is a part-time, hybrid programme run from six hubs, each with a theme:
  • Catania: water-smart agrifood systems;
  • Helsinki: circular solutions for food systems;
  • Munich: smart and low-carbon supply chains;
  • Paris: biotech ingredients, products and processes;
  • Warsaw: future-resilient agriculture;
  • Wageningen: digital and autonomous farming.
In the 2026 edition, EIT Food selected 65 startups. Each one receives a €3,000 lump sum for travel. At the end, every hub holds a tech validation pitch. Its top three (18 startups in all) win €50,000, €30,000 or €20,000 to run a validation project at a university or research centre of their choice in 2027. The terms put the call budget at €816,000, up to €53,000 per startup. The validation money comes with a lump-sum agreement and a SAFE (Simple Agreement for Future Equity), so read that document before you sign.
Who can apply, per the 2026 terms:
  • a company registered in or after 2016 in an EU Member State or a Horizon Europe associated country (the UK included; Swiss and UK funding depends on their status at the time);
  • a prototype or a paid or unpaid pilot, at TRL 4–8, that fits one hub theme;
  • 1–20 employees and revenues of up to €1 million to date;
  • last funding round: grant, pre-seed, seed or Series A (the FAN web page says "pre-series A");
  • ideally customer validation and traction, such as letters of intent or first sales.
Timing. The 2026 call opened on 18 February and closed on 14 April 2026. The 2027 call had not been announced on 31 October 2026, but EIT Food closed a call for 2027–2028 FAN implementing partners on 26 October 2026, so the network continues. If 2027 follows 2026, expect a call around February to April 2027.

Other doors: pilots, impact and equity

  • Proof-of-Concept Co-Financing Instrument. For startup pilots with a prospective corporate client, total costs under €60,000. Last cut-off: 30 November 2026. The rate is not published.
  • Catalyse NEB Call 2027. Mentoring and investor contacts, no cash stated, for startups that fit the New European Bauhaus values of sustainability, inclusion and beauty. Deadline: 15 January 2027.
  • EIT Food investment. "Up to €2m in equity" for EU agrifood startups that are alumni of, or currently in, a flagship EIT Food programme. FAN is the usual entry ticket.
  • RisingFoodStars. Now "RisingFoodStars BeyondScale", a recognition for the strongest scaleups from FAN, not an open accelerator. 18 companies were selected in 2026.

Scored fit check for the Accelerator Network

Score each line that is true today:
QuestionPoints
Registered company, founded in 2016 or later, in the EU or an associated country3 (required)
A prototype or pilot at TRL 4–83 (required)
20 employees or fewer, revenue under €1 million3 (required)
Your product clearly fits one of the six hub themes2
Letters of intent, a paid pilot or first sales2
A tech validation step you could run at a university or lab in 20272
One number for the water, CO2, waste or cost your product saves2
A team member free to attend the full programme1
Missing a required line: FAN is not for you yet. Pre-company teams should join one of the seven venture builders. 12–14 points: prepare now for the 2027 call. 15–18 points: you are a strong candidate. Use the months before the call to collect traction proof.

Copyable template: your tech validation pitch

FAN winners are chosen on a tech validation project, so draft it before the call opens:
Hub and theme: [hub] – [theme]

Problem: [Who in the food chain] loses [tonnes / litres / EUR] a year
because [cause]. Evidence: [pilot data, customer interviews].

Our technology: [what it does in one sentence], now at TRL [X].

Validation project (2027): Test [what] at [university / research
centre] to prove [metric] at [scale]. Duration: [months].
Budget: [EUR 20,000 / 30,000 / 50,000] for [lab time, materials,
analysis, travel].

Result we need: [data a buyer or investor asks for], moving us
from TRL [X] to TRL [Y].

Traction: [LoIs, paid pilot, first sales in EUR].
Next funding step: [seed round / EIT Food investment / EIC].
Our guide to writing an EU funding application helps with the longer written parts.

Worked example: a fermentation startup's path

A three-person team in Portugal makes a fermented protein from brewery waste. It was registered in 2024, has a 50-litre pilot at TRL 5, one letter of intent from a bakery chain and €40,000 in revenue from sample sales.
  • Seedbed? No. The team is already a company and not in one of the seven venture builders.
  • FAN? Yes. It fits the Paris or Helsinki hub and scores 16 on the check above, so it drafts its validation pitch now: a shelf-life and scale-up test at a food research centre.
  • Before the FAN call: if the bakery chain agrees to a pilot that costs under €60,000, the team can apply for proof-of-concept co-financing by 30 November 2026.
  • After FAN: as an alumnus, it can talk to EIT Food about equity, then watch the EIC Accelerator for its first plant. Our guide on how to find open EU funding calls shows where to track it.

Who should apply and who can skip it

Apply if you build technology for farming, food processing, ingredients, packaging, supply chains or food waste, and you want small, fast, equity-light money plus industry contacts.
Skip it if you sell a consumer brand with no technology behind it, or you need millions in grants now. For larger, research-heavy projects with a partner abroad, look at Eurostars. Health and nutrition-as-medicine teams should also read our EIT Health guide. Energy-heavy food tech may fit InnoEnergy. For fertiliser and raw-material recovery, see EIT RawMaterials.

FAQ

What funding does EIT Food give to startups?

Lump-sum subgrants inside its programmes: up to €30,000 per project in the Seedbed Venture Catalyst; €3,000 per startup in the Accelerator Network, plus €50,000, €30,000 or €20,000 for the top three per hub. Alumni of flagship programmes can seek up to €2 million in equity.

Is EIT Food funding equity-free?

Seedbed subgrants and the FAN travel lump sum are grants. The FAN tech validation money comes with a lump-sum agreement and a SAFE (Simple Agreement for Future Equity), and EIT Food's investment route is equity. Read the terms before you sign.

When does the EIT Food Accelerator Network 2027 call open?

It had not been announced on 31 October 2026. The 2026 call opened on 18 February and closed on 14 April 2026, so a similar window in early 2027 is likely but not confirmed.

Who is eligible for the EIT Food Accelerator Network?

Companies registered in or after 2016 in the EU or a Horizon Europe associated country, with a prototype or pilot at TRL 4–8, 1–20 employees, revenues up to €1 million and a fit with one of the six hub themes.

Can I apply to EIT Food Seedbed without a company?

Yes, that is the point: the Venture Catalyst call is only for teams that are not yet incorporated. But you must be enrolled in a programme of one of its seven venture builders, such as Carbon13, Zinc or Kost Studio.

What happened to EIT Food RisingFoodStars?

It is now RisingFoodStars BeyondScale, a recognition for the strongest scaleups coming out of the Accelerator Network rather than an open programme. In 2026, 18 companies were selected.
