Olark vs Intercom (2027): Simple Human Live Chat or AI-First Support With Fin, Which Fits a Small Startup Team?

Olark vs Intercom: Simple Human Live Chat or an AI-First Support Platform for Your Startup?

Olark and Intercom both put a chat window on your website, but they are built on different ideas. Olark started in 2009 as simple live chat for small teams and still sells human-only chat per agent; its new AI agent costs one flat monthly price. Intercom is a full help desk with an AI agent, Fin, built in: you pay per seat and again for every conversation Fin resolves. We checked plans, prices, trials and AI features on olark.com and intercom.com in October 2026, so this comparison shows what a small startup support team actually gets and pays in 2027.
Quick answer: choose Olark if one to three people answer chats on your website and you want a tool that is live in minutes for $29 per agent a month, with the option of an AI agent at a fixed $400 a month that never charges per conversation. Choose Intercom if you need a real help desk (tickets, email, a help center, WhatsApp and phone in one inbox) and want an AI agent that resolves a large share of questions; if you have raised under $10M and have fewer than 15 employees, apply for its Early Stage program first, which starts from $65 a month in year one.

Olark vs Intercom: which one fits a small support team?

Olark: Simple Live Chat, Now With a Flat-Price AI Agent

Olark has done live chat since 2009 and says more than 12,000 businesses use it. It is backed by Y Combinator and is a certified B Corp. The product is deliberately small: a chat box you brand to match your site, a view of each visitor's location, pages viewed and visit history before you reply, searchable transcripts you can export, and email follow-up when a visitor leaves. Olark's features page lists a WCAG 2.1 AA certified chatbox and GDPR support with a data processing agreement; WhatsApp, SMS and the accessible chatbox are marked as part of Olark Classic.

Olark homepage
The big change since the old version of this article is AI. Olark now sells a Standard AI Website Agent, powered by its own engine Aiden. Olark says it trains on your website in under a minute, keeps its answers in step with your live site and docs, captures and qualifies leads, starts conversations based on behaviour (pages viewed, time on site, return visits, UTM source) and hands the chat to a person in the same thread. Rule-based bots can be moved to the AI model.
  • Live Chat, no AI: $29 per agent per month, with a 14-day free trial and no credit card. You can add the AI agent later without reinstalling.
  • Standard AI Website Agent: $400 per month billed annually ($4,800 a year), unlimited AI conversations, no token limits or overages, one human seat included and extra agents at $29 each, so two agents cost $429 and three $458 a month.
  • Custom: regional routing, multiple teams, advanced integrations, custom SLAs and SSO, priced by sales.
  • Integrations: HubSpot, Salesforce, ActiveCampaign, Mailchimp, Zendesk, Help Scout, Front, Shopify, WooCommerce, WordPress, Webflow, Slack (beta), webhooks and an API, plus Zapier, which Olark says connects it to more than 2,000 apps.

What Olark does not do: it has no ticketing system or help center of its own. Its features page says conversations are pushed to your existing support stack, so if you also answer email tickets you will run Olark next to a help desk. The pricing page does not list a startup discount.

Intercom: An AI-First Help Desk Built Around Fin

Intercom calls itself a complete system for AI and human customer service: a shared inbox with tickets, a Messenger for live chat on your site and in your app, a public help center, reports and automation, with the Fin AI Agent built into every plan. Fin 4 is the current version. Intercom says Fin works on chat, email, voice, Slack and social channels, runs multi-step workflows it calls Procedures, connects to your systems through APIs, data connectors or MCP, and also works with other help desks such as Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot and Freshdesk. According to Intercom, Fin resolves an average of 76% of conversations across more than 12,000 customers; this is the company's own figure.

On the Intercom pricing page with annual billing selected (October 2026):
  • Essential: $29 per seat per month, shown at $19 for new customers (35% off). Includes Messenger live chat, a shared inbox and ticketing, pre-built reports, a public help center and basic automation.
  • Advanced: $85 per seat per month, with a workflow builder, multiple team inboxes, round-robin assignment, a multilingual help center and 20 free Lite seats.
  • Expert: $132 per seat per month, adding SSO, HIPAA support, SLAs, multibrand Messenger and 50 free Lite seats.
  • Fin AI Agent: $0.99 per outcome on every plan. An outcome counts when a customer confirms the issue is solved, does not ask for more help after Fin's answer, or Fin completes a Procedure (handoffs included). You pay at most once per conversation, nothing if the customer asks for a human, and you can set spending limits.
  • Add-ons: Copilot, an AI assistant for your agents, is $29 per agent per month billed annually or $35 monthly (10 free Copilot conversations per agent each month); Pro, with Operator and quality analysis, is $100 a month; Proactive Support Plus is $99 a month for 500 messages. WhatsApp, SMS, phone and email campaigns are charged by usage.
  • Free trial: 14 days, no credit card, with all features, Fin and add-ons. Essential and Advanced can be paid monthly or annually without a contract.

Year one is 93% off and starts from $65 a month for 6 Advanced seats, 6 Copilot seats, 20 Lite seats and Proactive Support Plus, with 300 Fin outcomes a month included. Year two is 50% off with 150 outcomes and year three 25% off with 75 outcomes; extra outcomes cost the normal $0.99, and phone, SMS and WhatsApp are not discounted.

What Olark and Intercom Really Cost a Small Team

The two pricing models behave very differently as you grow. Olark's AI agent is a fixed price however many chats it answers; Fin is cheap at low volume and grows with every resolution. Our estimate below uses the list prices above for a two-person team on annual billing. On our calculation, at about 400 Fin outcomes a month (400 × $0.99), Fin alone costs about the same as Olark's $400 AI agent. Below that, Intercom is cheaper; above it, Olark's flat price wins, but Intercom also gives you tickets, email and a help center that Olark does not.

What Changed Since the 2026 Version of This Comparison

  • Intercom is now Fin, and Salesforce owns it. Salesforce signed an agreement to buy Fin, formerly Intercom on 15 June 2026 for about $3.6 billion and completed the acquisition on 10 September 2026; Fin is now part of Salesforce AI Labs. The Intercom help desk is still sold under the Intercom name at intercom.com.
  • Fin 4, not Fin 2. The old article described a "rollout of Fin 2"; the current version on intercom.com is Fin 4.
  • Olark is no longer only rule-based. The old claim that Olark's bots are not self-learning and only handle pre-chat surveys is out of date: Olark now sells an AI Website Agent that trains on your site.
  • Removed: claims we could not source, such as which industries each tool "dominates" and "predictive responses based on tone analysis", and the old note that Olark's $29 plan includes 24/7 support, which its pricing page no longer states.

Olark or Intercom: Which Should Your Startup Choose?

  • You are one or two founders answering chats yourselves: Olark Live Chat at $29 per agent, or Intercom Essential at $19 per seat for new customers if you also want tickets and a help center.
  • You want AI answers but a predictable bill: Olark's AI Website Agent at a flat $400 a month, worth it once you expect several hundred AI-answered chats a month.
  • You want the strongest AI agent and one inbox for every channel: Intercom with Fin, and switch on spending limits from day one.
  • You have raised under $10M and have fewer than 15 people: apply for Intercom Early Stage before you pay list price.
  • You already use Zendesk, Freshdesk or HubSpot: you can add Fin to your current help desk instead of switching, or connect Olark chat to it.
  • You do not want to pay per seat at all: look at our open-source Intercom alternatives you can host yourself.

How Founders Use Live Chat and AI Support

In an early-stage startup, every chat is customer research: it shows what confuses visitors, which objections stop them from buying and what they would pay for. Start with human chat on your pricing and signup pages, tag every conversation and review the tags weekly; the questions that repeat become your help articles and, later, what your AI agent answers. Our guide to customer support strategies for startups covers the basics, and the benefits of live chat for customer service explains when chat pays off. Keep customer history in one place with one of the CRM tools for startups, and see our wider list of customer support tools for startups.
Chat only helps if people find your site. Turn the answers you give in chat into articles with the F/MS AI SEO Tool and our AI SEO blog, and before you build more features, validate your startup idea with the customers who already talk to you.
