Open-Source Ahrefs Alternatives (2027): 9 Self-Hosted SEO Tools for Rank Tracking, Site Audits, Logs and Analytics

Open-Source Ahrefs Alternatives: Self-Hosted SEO Tools for Rank Tracking, Site Audits, Logs and Analytics

Ahrefs is one of the strongest SEO suites, but it is closed software with a monthly bill. If you want SEO tools whose code you can read, run on your own server and keep using for free, open source covers a surprising part of the job: rank tracking, site audits, crawling, Lighthouse checks, server log analysis and privacy-friendly analytics. It does not cover everything. We checked every project below on its official website and GitHub in October 2026: the exact licence, the latest release and what it really does. Tools that are free but not open source are in our separate list of free Ahrefs alternatives, and paid suites are in Ahrefs alternatives.
Quick answer: there is no open-source copy of Ahrefs, because nobody gives away a backlink index of the whole web. What you can build is an open-source SEO stack: SerpBear for rank tracking, SEOnaut or LibreCrawl for site audits, Lighthouse with Unlighthouse for speed and on-page checks, GoAccess or advertools to see how Googlebot crawls you, and Matomo, Umami or Plausible for analytics. Add free Google Search Console for your own backlinks and queries.

What Ahrefs Costs in 2027, and What Open Source Cannot Replace

On the Ahrefs pricing page (checked October 2026) Lite costs $129 a month, Standard $249, Advanced $449 and Enterprise $1,499 a month with an annual commitment; paying annually saves up to 17%, and Ahrefs says it never runs discounts. A $29 Starter plan covers basic keyword and competitor research, and the free Ahrefs Free account gives limited Site Explorer and Site Audit data for websites you verify.
The part no open-source project can match is the backlink index. According to Ahrefs' own data page, its crawler visits about 5 million pages a minute, the index holds 494 billion pages, and the backlink data is refreshed every 15 to 30 minutes. That is what powers competitor backlink reports, Domain Rating and link prospecting. The closest open data is Common Crawl's web graphs: free host- and domain-level link graphs, released every few months (the latest covers August to October 2026). They show which sites link to which, but not page-level backlinks with anchor text, and you need data engineering skills to use them. For your own site, Google Search Console's Links report and Ahrefs Free are the practical answer; for competitors' backlinks you still need a paid tool.

The Best Open-Source Ahrefs Alternatives in 2027

1. SerpBear: open-source rank tracking

SerpBear is the open-source answer to Ahrefs' Rank Tracker. You add unlimited domains and keywords, and it checks your Google positions and emails you when they change. Connect Google Search Console and it shows real clicks and impressions for each tracked keyword; connect a Google Ads test account and it suggests keyword ideas with monthly search volumes. The catch: SerpBear does not scrape Google itself. You plug in a SERP API (its GitHub README lists services such as Serper, SerpApi, SearchApi and HasData, most of them paid) or your own proxies, and its documentation says its scraping strategies were rebuilt to work around Google's 2025 removal of the num=100 parameter. The code is MIT-licensed, it runs on Next.js and SQLite with Docker, and version 3.1.0 came out in March 2026, with the last code change in May 2026.

2. SEO Panel: an open-source SEO control panel for many sites

SEO Panel has been around since 2010 and calls itself the first open-source SEO control panel for multiple websites. It combines a keyword rank tracker for Google and Bing, a site auditor with sitemap generation, a backlink analyzer, Moz Domain Authority and Page Authority tracking (through the Moz API), PageSpeed checks and Google Search Console and Analytics integrations, all with scheduled reports. It is GPL-2.0 software written in PHP, so it runs on ordinary hosting, and a cloud-hosted version is offered if you do not want to install it. Version 7.0.0 was released in October 2026.

3. SEOnaut: open-source technical SEO audits

SEOnaut replaces the Site Audit part of Ahrefs. It crawls your site and sorts problems into critical, high and low severity: broken links, redirect chains and loops, missing or duplicate titles and descriptions, badly ordered headings and more, with a dashboard you can share with your team. It is MIT-licensed, written in Go with a MySQL database, and the recommended setup is Docker Compose. The same team runs a hosted freemium version at seonaut.org if you prefer not to self-host. The project does not publish tagged releases, but its code was updated in October 2026.

4. LibreCrawl: an open-source Screaming Frog-style crawler

LibreCrawl is a newer MIT-licensed SEO crawler that positions itself as a free alternative to Screaming Frog. It extracts titles, meta descriptions, headings, schema, hreflang and social tags, maps internal and external links, renders JavaScript sites with Playwright and pulls Core Web Vitals from PageSpeed Insights. Its website says it can crawl more than a million URLs and exports to CSV, Excel, JSON or XML without limits. It runs locally with one start script or with Docker, and several people can use one installation. There are no tagged releases yet; the last code change was in September 2026.

5. advertools: SEO crawling and log analysis in Python

advertools is an MIT-licensed Python library for marketers who are comfortable with a notebook. It includes an SEO crawler with custom extraction, bulk robots.txt testing, XML sitemap parsing, server log file analysis with reverse DNS lookup (to check whether a visit claiming to be Googlebot really is), SERP analysis and URL structure analysis. The results land in a table you can filter, chart or join with Search Console exports. Version 0.18.0 came out in June 2026.

6. Lighthouse and Unlighthouse: speed and on-page SEO checks

Lighthouse is Google's open-source, automated tool for page quality, with audits for performance, accessibility, best practices and SEO. You can run it in Chrome DevTools, from the command line, as a Node module or through PageSpeed Insights; it is Apache-2.0 software and version 13.5.0 came out in September 2026. Lighthouse checks one page at a time. Unlighthouse finds all your pages through links or sitemaps and runs Lighthouse on every one of them, with mobile and desktop results in one dashboard, CSV or JSON reports for CI and an MCP server for AI agents. It is MIT-licensed; version 0.19.1 and a v1 beta came out in October 2026.

7. GoAccess: see how search engine bots crawl your site

Ahrefs now offers Bot Analytics; the open-source way to see which bots crawl your site is your own server log. GoAccess is an MIT-licensed, real-time log analyser that runs in the terminal or as a self-contained HTML report. It reads nearly all log formats, including Apache, Nginx, Amazon S3, CloudFront and Caddy, and its host panel helps you spot aggressive crawlers and bots and the user agents behind them. Use it to check that Googlebot reaches your important pages and does not waste time on junk URLs. Version 1.12 came out in September 2026. You need access to your server logs, so it suits self-hosted sites better than website builders.

8. Matomo: open-source analytics with search engine data

Matomo is the best-known open-source alternative to Google Analytics and covers what Ahrefs' Web Analytics does: visits, referrers, search engines, goals and ecommerce, with full data ownership. The self-hosted On-Premise version is free under GPL-3.0; version 5.14.2 was released in October 2026, and Matomo 6 is in beta. One caveat for SEO: the Search Engine Keywords Performance plugin, which imports keywords, clicks and positions from Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, is a paid plugin under a commercial licence (with a 30-day trial), not part of the open-source core.

9. Umami and Plausible Community Edition: lightweight privacy-first analytics

If Matomo feels heavy, Umami is a simple, MIT-licensed analytics tool you can self-host for free; version 3.4.1 came out in October 2026, and its cloud Hobby plan is free for up to 100,000 events a month on one website. Plausible Community Edition is the free, self-hosted AGPL-3.0 release of Plausible (v3.2.1, June 2026). It is published as a long-term release twice a year, and it leaves out marketing funnels, user journeys, ecommerce revenue goals, SSO and the sites API, which stay in the paid cloud. Plausible can show Google Search Console search terms next to your visits. Both tools are cookie-free and far lighter than Google Analytics. Two more open-source analytics projects from the old version of this list are still active: OpenPanel (AGPL-3.0, release 3.16.1 in October 2026) and Open Web Analytics (GPL-2.0, release 1.14.2 in October 2026).

Removed or Changed Since the Last Version

The 2025 version of this article mixed open-source tools with free and paid ones. This is what changed:
  • Screaming Frog SEO Spider: free for up to 500 URLs, but not open source (the licence costs £199 a year). It is now in our free Ahrefs alternatives list; LibreCrawl and SEOnaut are the open-source crawlers.
  • Soovle: still a free keyword suggestion tool, now owned by and hosted on SEO.com, but closed source.
  • AlsoAsked: a People Also Ask research tool with free monthly searches and paid plans from $12 a month; useful, but not open source. See our paid Ahrefs alternatives for keyword suites.
  • OpenLinkProfiler: dropped. The domain now shows a different backlink checker that requires sign-up and promotes another company's content tool.
  • PostHog: open source (MIT core), but it is product analytics for apps rather than an SEO tool, so it is no longer on this list.

Which Open-Source Ahrefs Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You want to track rankings without a monthly seat fee: SerpBear with a pay-as-you-go SERP API, or SEO Panel if you manage many sites.
  • You want a site audit: SEOnaut for a shareable web dashboard, LibreCrawl for a Screaming Frog-style crawl with JavaScript rendering.
  • You want speed and Core Web Vitals checks for the whole site: Unlighthouse on top of Lighthouse.
  • You want to know how Googlebot crawls you: GoAccess for a quick report, advertools for deeper analysis in Python.
  • You want analytics you own: Matomo for full features, Umami or Plausible CE for something light.
  • You need competitor backlinks and keyword volumes: open source cannot do it. Use Ahrefs Free and Search Console for your own site, then a paid suite from our Ahrefs alternatives comparison.

How Founders Use an Open-Source SEO Stack

A typical early-stage stack costs only a small server: Search Console for queries and links, SerpBear for 50 to 100 money keywords, a monthly SEOnaut or LibreCrawl audit, Unlighthouse before every redesign and Umami or Plausible for traffic. FAQ About Open-Source Ahrefs Alternatives

Is there an open-source alternative to Ahrefs?

Not a complete one. Open-source tools replace parts of Ahrefs: SerpBear for rank tracking, SEOnaut and LibreCrawl for site audits, Lighthouse and Unlighthouse for page checks, GoAccess for bot logs and Matomo, Umami or Plausible for analytics. None of them has a backlink index of the web.

Why is there no open-source backlink checker like Ahrefs?

A backlink index needs a crawler that visits billions of pages and huge storage. Ahrefs says its crawler visits about 5 million pages a minute. The closest open data, Common Crawl's web graphs, is free but only shows links between hosts and domains.

What is the best open-source rank tracker?

SerpBear. It is MIT-licensed, tracks unlimited keywords and domains, and connects to Google Search Console. You need a SERP scraping API or proxies, and most of those APIs are paid per search.

Is Screaming Frog open source?

No. Screaming Frog SEO Spider is free for up to 500 URLs and costs £199 a year for a licence, but its code is closed. LibreCrawl and SEOnaut are open-source crawlers.

Is Lighthouse an SEO tool?

Partly. Lighthouse is Google's open-source page auditing tool with categories for performance, accessibility, best practices and SEO. It checks one page at a time; Unlighthouse runs it across a whole site.

Can Matomo show Google search keywords?

Yes, but only with the Search Engine Keywords Performance plugin, which imports data from Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. That plugin is paid and not part of the open-source core.

How much does Ahrefs cost in 2027?

When we checked in October 2026, Ahrefs Lite cost $129 a month, Standard $249, Advanced $449 and Enterprise $1,499 with an annual commitment. Starter costs $29 a month and Ahrefs Free is free for verified sites.

What is the cheapest way to replace Ahrefs?

Combine free Google Search Console and Ahrefs Free for your own site with open-source tools for rank tracking, audits and analytics. We list closed but free options in our free Ahrefs alternatives.

Do I need a developer to run these tools?

Not always. LibreCrawl has a one-click start script, SEO Panel and Matomo run on ordinary PHP hosting, and Lighthouse is built into Chrome. SEOnaut, SerpBear and Plausible are easiest with Docker, and advertools needs Python.

Where can I get a backlink by writing about my startup?

You can publish a guest post in one of the Fe/male Switch startup blogs, which rank in Google and in AI tools. Get a quality backlink.
