Open-Source Zendesk AI Alternatives (2027): 9 Self-Hosted AI Agents, Chatbots and Answer Bots for Customer Support

Open-source Zendesk AI alternatives 2027: self-hosted AI agents and chatbots for customer support

Open-Source Zendesk AI Alternatives: Self-Hosted AI Agents, Chatbots and Answer Bots for Customer Support

Zendesk AI covers three jobs: AI agents that answer customers on their own (the old Answer Bot), Copilot, which drafts replies for your human agents, and smart triage of tickets. You pay for it per automated resolution and per agent, and your conversations run through Zendesk's servers. If you want to own the bot, choose the AI model yourself or run it on your own hardware, an open-source stack can do the same jobs. We checked every tool below on its official website, documentation and GitHub in November 2026: the exact licence, the latest release, whether its AI talks to customers or only helps agents, and what the AI costs when you self-host. This article is about the AI layer; if you need a complete help desk with ticketing and a way to move your Zendesk tickets, read our open-source Zendesk alternatives first.
Quick answer: for a ready-made AI agent inside a support inbox, use Chatwoot (its Captain AI needs a paid plan, even self-hosted) or Libredesk (AI assistant included, no paid tiers); for a bot builder with human handoff and on-premise models, use Tiledesk; to keep your Zendesk-style help desk and add AI to tickets, use Zammad; and to build your own support agent, use Langflow (visual) or Parlant (code). Flowise was archived in August 2026 and Rasa Open Source is in maintenance mode.

What Zendesk AI Costs in 2027

To know what you are replacing: the Zendesk pricing page (checked November 2026; we were shown the euro prices for Europe) includes AI agents in every Support and Suite plan, but bills them per automated resolution. Each agent seat comes with a small allowance (5 automated resolutions per agent per month on Support Team and Suite Team, 10 on Suite Professional), and extra resolutions cost €1.50 each on a commitment or €2.00 pay-as-you-go. Copilot, the AI assistant for human agents, is an add-on at €50 per agent per month billed annually. The plans themselves start at €19 (Support Team), €55 (Suite Team) and €115 (Suite Professional) per agent per month billed annually, with a 14-day free trial. The open-source tools below are free to self-host; you pay for the server, your own time and, unless you run a local model, the AI provider's API usage.

The Best Open-Source Zendesk AI Alternatives in 2027

1. Chatwoot with Captain: the closest match to Zendesk AI agents and Copilot

Chatwoot is an open-source customer support inbox for website live chat, email, WhatsApp, social channels and more, and Captain is its AI layer. Captain's AI assistant answers first-response conversations from your help centre and FAQs and hands the chat to a human when needed, while its copilot helps agents draft, improve and translate replies. Read the licence and pricing carefully: Chatwoot's code is MIT-licensed outside its enterprise folder, which has its own licence, and the self-hosted plans page says Captain is not included in the free Community Edition; it comes with Premium Support at $19 per agent per month. In the cloud, the free Hacker plan (2 agents, 500 conversations a month) has no Captain, the Startups plan at $19 per agent per month includes 300 Captain credits, and extra credits cost $20 per 1,000. Version 4.19.1 came out in October 2026.

2. Tiledesk: an open-source bot builder with humans in the loop

Tiledesk started as an open-source live chat platform with built-in chatbots and now presents itself as a platform for AI agents with humans in the loop. Its GitHub repository (MIT) installs the whole stack: server, dashboard, the Design Studio where you build bots, and the chat widget. Bots can hand a conversation to a human agent, and the same bot replies are adapted to web, Android, iOS, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Telegram. Its website adds knowledge bases with hybrid search and on-premise deployment with open models, "behind your firewall". Docker Compose is meant for trials and a Helm chart for production, which the README describes as a template, not a ready production setup. The chatbot engine reached 3.0.2 in October 2026.

3. Libredesk: a free support desk with an AI assistant included

Libredesk is a young AGPL-3.0 support desk that runs as a single binary with Postgres and Redis. Email, a website live chat widget and WhatsApp land in one inbox, and a multilingual help centre is built in. Its AI Assistant answers live chat conversations from your knowledge base and hands off to a human when it cannot help; Agent Copilot drafts replies, summarises conversations and looks up knowledge base answers for your team. The website says every feature is included and there are no paid tiers. Version 2.9.2 came out on 31 October 2026.

4. Zammad: AI on tickets with the model of your choice

Zammad is a full AGPL-3.0 help desk, and its AI features work for your agents rather than chatting with customers: AI ticket summaries, a writing assistant that rewrites, shortens, expands and translates replies, and AI agents that do routine ticket work, started by triggers, scheduler jobs or macros. Its AI provider settings support Zammad AI, OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure AI, Mistral AI, any OpenAI-compatible endpoint and Ollama, which keeps the data on your own server (the docs warn you need a powerful GPU for that). Version 7.2.2 came out in October 2026. Pair it with a chat bot from this list if you also want automated answers for customers.

5. FreeScout AI Integration: free reply drafts for a shared inbox

For teams already on the AGPL-3.0 FreeScout help desk, the AI Integration module is free. It drafts replies, summarises conversations and fixes spelling and grammar in the editor, and it works with 16 providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral AI and OpenRouter, plus local models through Ollama or LM Studio. It is a Copilot replacement, not an answer bot: the module page does not mention automatic replies to customers. FreeScout 1.8.249 came out on 31 October 2026.

6. Parlant: an open-source framework for rule-following customer agents

Parlant calls itself the open-source framework for building customer-facing AI agents that keep to your business rules, aimed at customer service and in-app support. You write policies the agent picks up for each conversation and connect tools so it can act in your systems; it works with OpenRouter, LiteLLM, OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini, or a provider you bring. The code is Apache-2.0 on GitHub, and the company also sells enterprise services. It is a developer tool: there is no ready inbox or handoff screen, so you connect it to your help desk yourself. Version 3.3.2 came out in April 2026.

7. Langflow: build your own support agent visually

Langflow (MIT) is a low-code builder for AI agents and MCP servers that supports the major language models and vector databases. For support, you connect your help articles to a vector database, add a model and publish the flow as an API that your chat widget or help desk calls. You can self-host it, use the desktop app or a free cloud account. It is the closest replacement for Flowise, which was archived this year (see below). Version 1.13.0 came out in October 2026.

8. AnythingLLM: a website chat widget that answers from your documents

AnythingLLM (MIT) is a private AI app that runs on your computer or, for teams, on your own server with Docker. The Docker version can publish embedded chat widgets with one script tag: in Query mode the widget only answers from the documents in its workspace, and you can restrict it to your domains and cap chats per day and per visitor. It has no inbox or handoff, so it suits a simple FAQ bot on a product or docs site. Version 1.19.0 came out in October 2026.

9. LibreChat: a private AI assistant for your support team

LibreChat (MIT) is a self-hosted ChatGPT-style platform that connects to Anthropic, OpenAI, Azure, AWS and other models, with agents that read files, run code and call APIs, MCP tools and single sign-on through OAuth, SAML or LDAP. It does not talk to your customers, but it can replace Copilot-style help inside the team: agents ask it to draft answers or search internal documents without pasting customer data into a public chatbot. A 0.8.9 release candidate came out in October 2026. For more tools of this kind, see our open-source ChatGPT alternatives.

How to Replace Zendesk AI Agents Step by Step

An AI agent is only as good as the answers it can read. Before you switch off Zendesk AI, move your knowledge first and test the bot on real questions:
Five steps to replace Zendesk AI agents with an open-source bot: answers, model, bot, handoff, weekly review
Replacing Zendesk AI agents in 5 steps
  • Answers: export your most-used help centre articles and macros. Captain, Libredesk and AnythingLLM answer from your help centre or documents, so gaps there become wrong bot answers.
  • Model: Zammad, FreeScout, Langflow, LibreChat and AnythingLLM can use a local model through Ollama or a similar runner; the others call a cloud API. Local models need a strong server.
  • Handoff: Chatwoot, Tiledesk and Libredesk hand chats to people in the same inbox. With Langflow, Parlant or AnythingLLM you build that part yourself or keep a human-only channel.
  • Tickets: moving the ticket history out of Zendesk is a separate job; our open-source Zendesk alternatives guide covers the migration tools.

Zendesk AI Alternatives That Are Discontinued, Changed or Not Open Source

The 2025 version of this article and other older lists recommend several tools that we no longer put on an open-source shortlist:
  • Flowise: archived. The team announced a code freeze on 29 July 2026, archived the GitHub repository on 13 August 2026 and ended official support on 31 August 2026, as the Future of Flowise notice explains. The Apache-2.0 code can still be forked; for new projects, use Langflow.
  • Rasa Open Source: its GitHub page says it is in maintenance mode, and the last release, 3.6.21, came out in January 2025. Rasa now points builders to its CALM-based platform; the Rasa pricing page offers a free Developer Edition licence (one bot, up to 1,000 external conversations a month), which is a free licence with limits, not an open-source one.
  • Botpress: the self-hosted Botpress v12 (AGPL-3.0) had its last release, 12.31.10, in April 2025. Today's Botpress is a cloud platform; its public repository holds the integrations, SDK and CLI, not a server you can host.
  • Not open source: Typebot uses the Functional Source License, Dify a modified Apache 2.0 licence that forbids multi-tenant use without a commercial licence and removing its logo, and Hexabot moved to the Fair Core License. All three are source-available, not open source.
  • Removed from the old list: Dialogflow (a paid Google Cloud service, not open source), Copilot.Live (the domain now redirects to Kaily, a hosted product; we found no open-source code), OpenHands (an AI coding agent), AI SDR Kit (sales agents), Compass by Tabiya (a careers agent for young job seekers) and LangChain (a developer library; Langflow gives you the same building blocks visually).

Which Open-Source Zendesk AI Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You want an AI agent and human agents in one inbox, with little setup: Chatwoot with Captain (budget for Premium Support or a cloud plan) or Libredesk (free).
  • Customer data must stay on your servers, with your own model: Tiledesk on-premise, or Zammad and FreeScout with Ollama for agent-side AI.
  • You keep a classic help desk and only want Copilot features: Zammad or FreeScout's free AI module.
  • You have a developer and want full control over the bot's logic: Parlant for rule-following agents in code, Langflow for a visual flow.
  • You only need a FAQ bot on your website: AnythingLLM's chat widget in Query mode.
  • Your team wants a private ChatGPT for drafting answers: LibreChat.

How Founders Use Open-Source AI for Customer Support

For an early-stage startup, the support bot is also a research tool: every question it cannot answer shows what your product or website fails to explain. Start with one channel and your ten most common questions, read the bot's conversations every week and fix the article, not the prompt; our guide to customer support strategies for startups covers the basics. If you are new to agents, our simple guide to building AI agents and the list of AI agents for startup founders show where they help beyond support. Add chat only when you can answer fast (see the benefits of live chat for customer service), and compare the wider list of customer support tools for startups.
If you also want to own your product analytics, our open-source Segment alternatives cover self-hosted customer data platforms. Before you build anything, validate your startup idea with real customers, and turn your best support answers into articles with the F/MS AI SEO Tool so people find them in Google and AI assistants before they ever open a chat.

FAQ About Open-Source Zendesk AI Alternatives

Is Zendesk open source?

No. Zendesk, including its AI agents and Copilot, is a proprietary cloud service. Open-source help desks such as Zammad and FreeScout, and AI tools such as Chatwoot, Tiledesk and Libredesk, can replace it on your own server.

What is the best open-source alternative to Zendesk AI agents?

Chatwoot with its Captain AI agent is the closest match, but Captain needs a paid plan even when self-hosted. Libredesk includes an AI assistant with handoff at no cost, and Tiledesk lets you build bots with human handoff and on-premise models.

What is a good open-source alternative to the Zendesk Answer Bot?

Libredesk's AI Assistant and Chatwoot's Captain answer customers from your help centre and hand over to a person. For a simple FAQ bot on your website, AnythingLLM's chat widget in Query mode answers only from your documents.

Is there a free open-source alternative to Zendesk Copilot?

Yes. FreeScout's AI Integration module is free and drafts and summarises replies, Zammad has AI summaries and a writing assistant, and LibreChat gives your team a private AI assistant. You still pay the AI provider unless you run a local model.

What is the best open-source alternative to Dialogflow?

For a visual builder, Langflow; for a developer framework focused on customer service, Parlant; for a bot builder with live chat and human handoff, Tiledesk. Rasa Open Source still exists but is in maintenance mode.

Is Rasa still open source?

Rasa Open Source is still on GitHub under Apache-2.0, but it is in maintenance mode and its last release came out in January 2025. Rasa's current free Developer Edition is a free licence with limits, not an open-source licence.

Is Flowise still maintained?

No. Flowise was archived on 13 August 2026 and official support ended on 31 August 2026. Its Apache-2.0 code can be forked, but Langflow is the safer choice for a new project.

Are Dify and Typebot open source?

Not by the usual definition. Dify uses a modified Apache 2.0 licence with extra conditions, and Typebot uses the Functional Source License. Both are source-available.

Can I run a support chatbot without sending data to OpenAI?

Yes. Zammad, FreeScout, Langflow, AnythingLLM and LibreChat can work with local models through Ollama or a similar runner, and Tiledesk offers on-premise deployment with open models. You need a server with enough power, usually a GPU.

Where can I get a backlink by writing about my startup?

You can publish a guest post in one of the Fe/male Switch startup blogs, which rank in Google and in AI tools. Get a quality backlink.
