Mbabane startups to watch in 2027: 6 verified Eswatini companies and the programmes behind them

Mbabane Startups to Watch in 2027: Verified Eswatini Companies in Delivery, Mobile Money, Mobility, Payroll and Farming

Mbabane is the capital of Eswatini, a small kingdom in southern Africa, and its startup scene is small too. That makes it a good place to learn how founders build when the home market is tiny: they solve one everyday problem well, work with the regulator early, and lean on government programmes that bigger cities do not need. The 2026 version of this article listed ten Mbabane startups with precise funding and user numbers, but we could not find a single one of them. For this 2027 edition we started again: in October 2026 we checked every company on its own website, on the central bank's register or in an investor announcement, and every support programme on its official page. The old names and why they are gone are listed near the end.
A note on the name: the country is no longer called Swaziland. According to a US government notice, King Mswati III officially renamed the Kingdom of Swaziland the Kingdom of Eswatini on 19 April 2018. Local brands still use "Swazi" for the people and products, and web addresses keep the .sz ending.
Quick answer: the Mbabane and Eswatini startups to watch in 2027 are Swoop (food delivery, now also in Lagos), Instacash (mobile money that works on any phone), DeltaPay (a payments app that graduated from the central bank's sandbox), Leap (taxi hailing and airport taxis), Payroll Eswatini (Swazi-built payroll software) and Umlimisi (an AI farm app). Behind them stand the Royal Science and Technology Park, the Central Bank of Eswatini's FinTech sandbox, SEDCO and the Youth Enterprise Revolving Fund. EcoEnergy Solutions, SwaziPay, Code Hub and the other names on the old list are gone because we could not verify that they exist.

Why Mbabane Matters for Founders in 2027

Eswatini is a test market. The Central Bank of Eswatini's National FinTech Strategy 2025-2030 says the country has reached 87% financial inclusion, but it is honest about the gap: the fintech market is "heavily dominated by incumbent players, with limited startup participation", and the startups that do take part are mostly based abroad and face regulatory and funding barriers. The strategy wants Eswatini to become "a leading, resilient hub for dynamic and inclusive fintech innovation in Africa", and sets a target to launch a multi-sector regulatory sandbox by 2026 and to finish reviewing the priority fintech laws by the end of 2027.
For a founder that means two things. Competition is thin, so a good product can become the national leader fast, as Swoop did. And the regulator, the science park and the small-business agencies are close and reachable, so you can get a licence, a desk or a youth loan without a long queue of rivals. Mbabane and Eswatini startups to watch in 2027: what is confirmed

The Mbabane and Eswatini Startups to Watch in 2027

1. Swoop: food delivery that started in Eswatini

Swoop calls itself "Eswatini's Super App". Its Eswatini site offers food delivery from restaurants in Mbabane, Manzini, Ezulwini and Matsapha, with prices shown upfront, live order tracking and groceries and pharmacy listed as coming soon. Restaurants and riders can join with no upfront costs. Its about page says it now operates in two markets, Nigeria (Lagos) and Eswatini. In April 2026 its investor Version One Ventures announced that Swoop had raised $7.3 million with Long Journey, Variant, Soma Capital and Dune. According to Version One, founder Aubrey Niederhoffer left UC Berkeley at 19, moved to Eswatini and launched Swoop there, where it became the country's largest e-commerce platform with more than 22,000 users, before launching in Lagos in April 2026.
Lesson for founders: a small market is a cheap place to prove a model. Swoop used Eswatini to show traction, then raised money to enter a market many times larger.

2. Instacash: mobile money on any phone, from Mbabane

Instacash is a mobile wallet run by Directcore Technologies (Pty) Ltd from the Mbabane Service Centre at Swazi Plaza. Its about page says it is a fintech company licensed by the Central Bank of Eswatini and an independent provider of electronic money transfer services that works across both mobile networks, MTN Eswatini and Eswatini Mobile, for users with or without internet: customers dial *365#. Its services include sending and withdrawing money, merchant payments, bill payments, airtime, electricity, bulk disbursements, funeral cover and a stokvel (savings group) account. In October 2024, the security technology company Giesecke+Devrient said that Instacash had built a proof of concept that lets people use the central bank's digital lilangeni on basic feature phones through USSD codes, without a smartphone or a data connection.
Lesson for founders: design for the phone your customers actually own. A USSD menu reaches people that an app store never will.

3. DeltaPay: a payments app that graduated from the sandbox

DeltaPay offers a payments app built around "Send, spend, and earn rewards, all from one app". The Central Bank of Eswatini's FinTech sandbox page lists DeltaPay (Ltd), a digital payment platform and wallet service provider at Lot 121 Dzeliwe Street, Mbabane, with the status "Exited Sandbox and fully licensed". Its App Store listing, published by DeltaCrypt GmbH, describes instant transfers between DeltaPay users, QR-code payments at merchants, cashback points at DeltaPay merchants and transfers to and from local retail banks and Instacash. The first App Store version dates from August 2025, and a later update added support for the Eswatini National Payment Switch. We found no funding announcement, so we cite none.
Lesson for founders: in a regulated market, a sandbox is a shortcut. Testing under the regulator's eye turns a pilot into a licence and gives the product credibility with merchants and banks.

4. Leap: taxi hailing and airport transfers

Leap is a taxi app that lets riders request a taxi from anywhere and lets registered taxi owners work when they choose: "Make money only when you want to make money". Its homepage calls Leap the official taxi services provider of King Mswati III International Airport (KMII), with bookings by phone or WhatsApp on a +268 Eswatini number, and offers riders a discount on their next ride when they refer a friend. The site's copyright line dates from 2020. We found no funding announcement.
Lesson for founders: one anchor contract, here an airport, gives a young marketplace steady demand while the everyday app business grows.

5. Payroll Eswatini: payroll built for local tax rules

Payroll Eswatini sells cloud payroll software under the line "Swazi-Built Payroll Software for Eswatini". Payroll runs in two steps, Input Wages and Check Wages, and the software generates the Eswatini Revenue Service forms employers file, such as PAYE01, PAYE05 (IRP5), PAYE15 and PAYE16, plus the NPF200 pension form. Its free PAYE, medical aid and vehicle tax benefit calculators double as marketing. The site links to its developer, NGW Solutions, which says it first built the payroll software for Ngwenya Glass, a hand-made glass manufacturer, and designed it so it could be distributed to other companies as software as a service.
Lesson for founders: a custom project for one client can become a product. Local tax and pension rules are a moat that global payroll tools rarely bother to cross.

6. Umlimisi: an AI farm manager born on a farm

Umlimisi (siSwati for "the one who watches over") is a mobile-first farm management platform for crops and livestock such as broilers, layers and pigs: farmers take a photo for an instant diagnosis, get schedules that adapt to the weather and track costs and profit, free to start. Its about page says it started on Ekukhuleni Farm, runs in a phone browser in siSwati and English without an app download, and was founded by two people, one from technology and one from agriculture. It is a product of Ekukhuleni Labs, based in Manzini, which also builds Lunyazi, its own SMS and notification platform, and a digital stokvel management tool for Eswatini savings groups.
Lesson for founders: build for your own problem first. Running a real farm told the team which features matter on a weak connection.

Where Mbabane Founders Get Support in 2027

Eswatini's startup support is mostly public, and most of it sits in or near Mbabane. These are the programmes we could confirm on their official pages in October 2026:
  • Royal Science and Technology Park (RSTP): set up by the Royal Science and Technology Act of 2012 and made a Special Economic Zone in 2018. Its business incubator supports start-ups in ICT, biotechnology, agriculture and food, climate and the environment, and indigenous knowledge, with co-working space at Songcondvongcondvo Wemaswati House, training, mentoring, company registration, intellectual property protection, legal help and fundraising support. In 2026 the park ran the Eswatini round of the Startup World Cup, a competition powered by Pegasus Tech Ventures with a $1 million investment prize: the call opened on 11 May and closed on 14 June 2026. The park's site did not load from our location, so we read its June 2026 pages through the Internet Archive.
  • Central Bank of Eswatini FinTech sandbox: lets startups and financial institutions test financial products live with relaxed rules under the bank's supervision. Applicants are told within 21 working days whether they are accepted and send monthly reports during testing. DeltaPay has left the sandbox with a full licence; Black Solutions, another Mbabane payments company, was still in it when we checked.
  • SEDCO (Small Enterprises Development Company): a public enterprise under the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade, set up in 1970. Its incubation programme runs for up to three years, starting with a 2-week entrepreneurship course and 1-week courses on idea evaluation and business plans, then subsidised workspace in nine estates with 173 units across all four regions. It reports more than 815 incubatees, runs Entrepreneur of the Year Awards and the 18-week MTN-SEDCO Cija Ngebhizinisi radio course, and partnered with Enactus Eswatini on student ventures in February 2026.
  • Youth Enterprise Revolving Fund (YERF): based at Lilunga House on Somhlolo Road, Mbabane, it lends to entrepreneurs aged 18 to 35: standard loans of E5,000 to E50,000 for individuals and E5,000 to E100,000 for companies, plus order finance and the MTN YERF Khula Natsi loans of E5,000 to E30,000. From 2018 to August 2026 it approved E29.82 million in loans to 651 businesses, 262 of them owned by women and 149 in the Hhohho region, which includes Mbabane.
Women founders can combine these local options with the international funds in our lists of grants for female entrepreneurs and female founder grants.

Mbabane Startups From the Old List That Could Not Be Verified

The 2026 version of this article listed ten Mbabane startups with funding, user numbers and expansion plans, but no sources. We searched for each one by name, on the web and in startup directories, and found nothing:
  • EcoEnergy Solutions, SmartFarm Swaziland and GreenMobility Networks: no company website, registration or press coverage under these names. Eswatini's real solar projects are utility-scale plants, not startups.
  • HealthTech Innovations, InstaTutor Eswatini and Mbabane FinTech Inc.: not found. The fintech companies the central bank actually lists are DeltaPay and Black Solutions, and the licensed wallets include Instacash.
  • SwaziPay: not found. QR payments in Eswatini are offered by DeltaPay and other licensed providers.
  • Code Hub: we found no developer coworking space of that name in Mbabane; the verified incubators are RSTP and SEDCO.
  • Timzana Textiles and SwaziCraft: not found. Eswatini's crafts sector is real, but these two brands are not.
  • JuiceMe: some directories call this payroll and employment platform an Eswatini startup, but its own website only lists Eswatini as one of 125 markets, so we left it out.
We also removed the old article's unsourced figures and claims, its links to third-party example sites, and a broken paragraph at the end.

Which Mbabane Startup Should You Learn From?

  • You build a consumer app: study Swoop and how it used a small home market to raise money for a large one.
  • You build fintech: study Instacash (USSD for every phone) and DeltaPay (sandbox to licence).
  • You build a marketplace: study Leap and its airport contract.
  • You build B2B software: study Payroll Eswatini, which turned local tax rules into a product.
  • You build agritech: study Umlimisi, which grew out of a working farm.

How Founders Use Mbabane's Startup Scene

Start local, then plan for the region. Use RSTP or SEDCO for a desk and mentoring, YERF if you are under 36 and need a first loan, and the central bank's sandbox if you touch money. Then look beyond Eswatini for investors: compare angel investors for AI startups, early-stage VC firms and VCs for AI startups, meet fintech investors through our guide to fintech startup events, and pitch at the startup competitions in Europe if you want to expand there.
