EU Funding for Startups and SMEs in 2026

EIT InnoEnergy for Startups: Investment, Programmes and Who Fits

TL;DR: EIT InnoEnergy, now simply called InnoEnergy, is the clean energy investor and innovation network set up by the EU's European Institute of Innovation and Technology in 2010. For founders it is mainly an early-stage equity investor with hands-on support, not a grant scheme: it backs clean tech teams that have at least a proof of concept or prototype, mostly in Europe, and you apply through a rolling online form with no deadline. It does not publish ticket sizes. Idea-stage founders can enter through the energy cohort of EIT Jumpstarter instead (2026 prizes: €10,000, €5,000 and €3,000 per cohort). Below: a route-fit matrix, a scored readiness check, copyable answers for the application form and a 30-day plan.
Founders who search for "EIT InnoEnergy funding" expect an open call with a budget and a deadline. That picture is out of date: InnoEnergy is now a financially autonomous company that invests in startups, builds industrial companies and trains the energy workforce.
This guide explains what that means for a startup in 2026 and 2027, using InnoEnergy's own pages, the EIT's community page, the EU's CORDIS project database and the EIT Jumpstarter call, all checked on 30 October 2026.

What EIT InnoEnergy is in 2026

InnoEnergy was established in 2010 as one of the EIT's first Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs). The EIT model expects each KIC to earn its own income and become financially sustainable within 15 years. According to the EIT, InnoEnergy signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the EIT in 2024 and entered a new phase as a financially sustainable member of the EIT Community, "operating with greater autonomy". InnoEnergy's own "About us" page dates its new partnership with the EIT to 2025. Either way, the result for founders is the same: the old "EIT" prefix has mostly gone, and so has the logic of EU grant calls.
Three facts set your expectations:
  • It invests, it doesn't hand out grants. InnoEnergy's startup pages talk about "adding InnoEnergy to your cap table". Its value-added support comes with that investment.
  • It still has an EU grant of its own. The CORDIS database lists "EIT InnoEnergy 2026-2027" (grant agreement 101299092), running from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2027 with an EU contribution of €18,997,802.69, coordinated by KIC InnoEnergy SE in the Netherlands. That money funds InnoEnergy's activities. It is not a call startups can apply to.
  • It is big. InnoEnergy reports 540+ companies supported since 2010, 160+ active portfolio companies, €35 billion+ raised by its portfolio through 2025, four industrial unicorns and a network of 1,400+ partners across 21 EU countries and the United States. It cites Pitchbook's league tables naming it the most active VC investor in energy globally in 2020 and 2022–2025.

What InnoEnergy looks for in a startup

InnoEnergy's startup page lists its investment focus plainly:
  • a complementary, diverse and execution-driven team;
  • a clean tech field;
  • at least a proof of concept or prototype;
  • early-stage development;
  • mainly Europe, but also the USA and Japan.
It invests in "CAPEX-heavy hardware solutions or software, FOAK technologies or business model innovations", where FOAK means first-of-a-kind plants. Its thematic areas are energy storage, energy for transport and mobility, decarbonising industry, smart electric grids, renewable energy, energy for the circular economy and energy efficiency. The application form also lists smart and efficient buildings and cities, and nuclear instrumentation.
What you get besides money. InnoEnergy describes its support in nine areas, including access to finance (its Investment Readiness Level method and a VC Community of 200+ investors), access to talent (it filled over 105 job positions in 2024), access to markets (44 proofs of concept or joint development agreements signed in 2024), a 20+ person sales team across Europe and the US, supply chain and industrialisation advice, and help picking a board member. Its success stories also show a funding chain: two InnoEnergy portfolio companies, Altris and Mecaware, were selected for the 2026 EIC Accelerator, according to an InnoEnergy news post from March 2026.

The company builder shows you what InnoEnergy wants from startups. InnoEnergy says it has launched five industrial companies, which it expects to create over 4,000 direct jobs, among them Verkor (batteries), GravitHy (low-carbon steel), FertigHy (fertiliser) and Holosolis (solar modules). If your startup supplies a technology, service or component to one of those value chains, say so in your application.
EIT Jumpstarter is the door for idea-stage founders. The EIT's pre-acceleration programme runs six thematic cohorts, one of them Energy & Renewables run by InnoEnergy. The 2026 edition was open to innovators from EIT Regional Innovation Scheme countries, individually or in teams of up to two co-founders, with more than €240,000 in total prize money. Applications closed on 17 May 2026 and the programme runs until December 2026. A 2027 edition had not been announced on 30 October 2026.

InnoEnergy investment vs an EU grant

The two are not rivals. A startup can raise from InnoEnergy and later win an EIC Accelerator grant, as Altris and Mecaware did. If you want to compare all the EU routes first, read our European funds for startups map.

Readiness check: score yourself before you apply

Give yourself the points for each line that is true today:
QuestionPoints
You have a working proof of concept or prototype3
You can show one number for the CO2, cost or energy your solution saves2
Your founding team covers tech and business, and is full-time3
You have filed at least one patent, or have a clear IP plan2
You have a pilot customer or a letter of intent from industry3
You know your market size and three main competitors2
You are ready to sell equity in your next round2
You fit one of InnoEnergy's seven thematic areas2
You are based in Europe, the USA or Japan1
16–20 points: apply through the form this month. 10–15: apply, but fill the gaps (a pilot letter, a quantified value proposition) first, as InnoEnergy asks you to "quantify as much as possible". Under 10: you are pre-prototype; watch for the next EIT Jumpstarter call, or look at smaller money in cascade funding open calls.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Check the fit against the investment focus above: prototype, clean tech, early stage.
  2. Write a one-line pitch. The form asks for your business idea in one sentence.
  3. Quantify your value proposition: kWh, tonnes of CO2, euros saved per customer.
  4. Prepare the IP and market answers: patents filed, target customers, market size, competitors.
  5. Fill in the form on InnoEnergy's "For Startups" page and attach your pitch deck or business plan (up to 50 MB).
  6. Talk to the nearest team. InnoEnergy says the closest local team contacts you after you apply.
With no deadline, evidence matters more than speed.

Copyable answers for the application form

The form's main fields are: one-line pitch, problem, solution and value proposition, IP rights, market description, further development and "Which are your interests in joining InnoEnergy?". Fill this template before you open it:

[Company] makes [product] that cuts [industrial user]'s [energy use /
CO2 / cost] by [X%] compared with [current solution].

Problem:
[Who] loses [EUR / MWh / tonnes CO2] a year because [cause].
Evidence: [study, customer interview count, pilot data].

Solution and value proposition:
[How it works in two sentences]. Pilot result: [number] at [site].
Cost per [unit] is [X] vs [Y] for the incumbent.

IP rights:
[N] patents filed ([year], [office]); [trade secrets / software].

Market:
First customers: [segment, country]. Market size: [EUR, source].
Competitors: [A], [B], [C]. Our edge: [one line].

Further development:
From TRL [X] to TRL [Y] in [months]: [pilot, certification, first line].

Interest in InnoEnergy:
Investment of [EUR range] in our [round] plus introductions to
[type of industrial customer] and help with [hiring / supply chain].

30-day plan for a first application

WeekWhat to do
1Score yourself with the check above. Collect pilot data, patent numbers and one market-size source.
2Write the template answers. Ask a pilot customer for a one-page letter of intent.
3Cut your deck to 12 slides: problem, solution, numbers, team, market, round, use of funds.
4Submit the form. Meanwhile, list two EU grants you could stack later (see the EU grant calendar 2027).
For the written parts of any later grant, our guide to writing an EU funding application walks through each section.

Who should apply and who can skip it

Apply if you build clean energy or industrial decarbonisation technology, have a prototype, and want an investor that opens doors to industrial buyers.
Skip it for now if you are outside energy, want non-dilutive money only, or are still at the idea stage. Raw materials and battery recycling teams should also read our EIT RawMaterials guide. R&D projects with a partner company in another country may fit Eurostars. Health tech founders have their own EIT network: see our EIT Health guide. FAQ

Is EIT InnoEnergy still part of the EIT?

Yes, but as an autonomous member. It was set up as an EIT Knowledge and Innovation Community in 2010 and, according to the EIT, became a financially sustainable member of the EIT Community after a Memorandum of Cooperation signed in 2024. It now calls itself InnoEnergy.

Does EIT InnoEnergy give grants to startups?

Not as open grant calls. InnoEnergy invests in startups and adds hands-on support. Its own EU grant for 2026–2027 (about €19 million, per CORDIS) funds its activities, not individual startups.

How much does InnoEnergy invest in a startup?

InnoEnergy does not publish a ticket size on its website. Amounts are agreed case by case after the application and talks with its local team, so treat any fixed figure on third-party sites with caution.

How do I apply to EIT InnoEnergy?

Fill in the application form on InnoEnergy's "For Startups" page: company details, a one-line pitch, problem, solution, IP, market and your interests in joining. There is no deadline, and the nearest InnoEnergy team contacts you afterwards.

Which startups does EIT InnoEnergy invest in?

Early-stage clean tech companies with at least a proof of concept or prototype, a complementary team and a solution in areas such as energy storage, grids, renewables, mobility, energy efficiency or industrial decarbonisation, mainly in Europe but also in the USA and Japan.

What is the EIT Jumpstarter energy cohort?

It is the Energy & Renewables track of the EIT's pre-acceleration programme, run with InnoEnergy. In 2026 it offered over 55 hours of training, mentoring and prizes of €10,000, €5,000 and €3,000 per cohort; applications closed on 17 May 2026.
