Ahrefs vs Keyword Insights (2027): Full SEO Suite with Backlinks or Keyword Clustering and Content Briefs? Prices, Trials and Credits Compared

Ahrefs vs Keyword Insights for Startups: Full SEO Suite or Keyword Clustering and Content Briefs?

Ahrefs and Keyword Insights both end up on startup SEO shortlists, but they solve different problems. Ahrefs is a full SEO suite built on its own web crawler: backlinks, competitor traffic, keyword research, rank tracking, site audits and AI search visibility in one platform. Keyword Insights is a content-planning tool: it groups keywords that share the same Google results into clusters, shows the search intent of each cluster and turns clusters into content briefs and AI drafts. We checked both tools on their official websites and pricing pages in November 2026, in the default view each site showed us, and removed the old claims the vendors' pages don't support.
Quick answer: choose Ahrefs if you need to see who links to your competitors, where their traffic comes from and how your own site performs; the cheapest way in is Starter at €27 ($29) a month, the full working plan is Lite at €119 ($129), and Ahrefs Free audits your own site at no cost. Choose Keyword Insights if you already have a long keyword list and need to know which pages to write; it clusters keywords, adds intent, briefs and AI writing on a credit system from $58 a month, with a $1 trial for 7 days. Many content teams use both: Ahrefs for research and links, Keyword Insights for the content plan.

Ahrefs and Keyword Insights in 2027: What Each One Does

Ahrefs: a full SEO suite built on its own backlink index

Ahrefs crawls the web itself and sells one platform around that data. Its Site Explorer index box lists 22.8 billion pages, 35 trillion live backlinks and 175 locations. For any website you can see where its search traffic comes from, which pages perform, which sites link to it and which ads it runs. Next to that sit Keywords Explorer (28.7 billion keywords filtered from 110 billion discovered, in 217 locations), Rank Tracker, Site Audit, Web Analytics and Brand Radar for visibility in AI answers.
  • Starter, €27 ($29) a month: 200 credits a month for Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker, monthly billing only and no extra users. Enough for a founder who researches a few evenings a month.
  • Lite, €119 ($129) a month: "essential data for small businesses and personal projects": 1,000 credits per user, 750 tracked keywords, 6 months of history, 5 unverified and unlimited verified projects, 150 AI prompt checks, 100,000 crawl credits and API and MCP access. Up to 2 more users at €37.40 ($40) a month each.
  • Standard, €229 ($249) a month: unlimited credits, 2,000 tracked keywords, 2 years of history, and the extra Keywords Explorer features: AI suggestions, keyword clusters, search intents, translations and SERP updates. Advanced is €419 ($449), Enterprise €1,394 ($1,499).
  • Content Kit add-on, from €89 ($99) a month: AI Content Helper and AI Content Grader to align a draft with search intent. Rank Tracker updates weekly on every plan.
  • Billing: paying annually saves up to 17%. Ahrefs' FAQ says it never runs discounts and has no free trial.
Free way in: what used to be Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is now Ahrefs Free. Verify your site and you get Site Audit with 5,000 crawl credits per project a month and the top 1,000 backlinks and keywords of your own site, on as many verified sites as you like. It does not let you research competitors. Prices above are the monthly view on Ahrefs' pricing page.
Best for: founders whose growth depends on competitor research and link building as well as content, and teams that want one tool for keywords, links, audits and rank tracking.

Keyword Insights: from a keyword list to a content plan

Keyword Insights is a UK tool (trading under Snippet Digital Ltd) that sells itself on topical authority for Google and AI search. You upload a keyword list, or build one with Keyword Discovery, which pulls ideas from Google Autocomplete, Reddit, Quora and People Also Ask with volume, difficulty and CPC. The tool then checks live Google results for every keyword and groups the ones whose ranking URLs overlap: each cluster is one page to write, and clusters are grouped again into wider topics.
  • Clustering: the keyword clustering page says it uses live, country-specific results, handles up to 200,000 keywords at a time, lets you change the URL overlap (30% by default) and choose a centroid or agglomerative algorithm. Reports show the average rank, intent, difficulty and a competitor visibility map per cluster.
  • Search intent: each cluster is labelled informational, commercial, transactional or other from the top 10 results, so you choose the right page type before you write.
  • Briefs and AI writing: briefs built from live results with an Information Gain model (100 credits), a Writing Assistant (200 credits an article) and an AI Writing Agent (1,200 credits an article). It connects to Google Search Console and WordPress.
  • AI search: it shows Reddit, Quora and YouTube threads that AI tools draw on, so you can join the conversations that get cited.
  • Pricing: Basic $58 a month with 10,000 credits, 1 user seat and 5 workspaces; Professional $99 a month with 20,000 credits, 3 seats, 10 workspaces and team sharing; Enterprise is custom. Annual billing is labelled "save 20%".
  • Credits: every feature draws on one pool. Unused subscription credits reset at the end of each billing period. Pay-as-you-go credits work for clustering only and expire 30 days after purchase. If you cancel, you keep access until the period ends and then lose all credits.
  • Trial: $1 for 7 days with 5,000 one-time credits (for example 2 Keyword Discovery searches, a cluster of up to 500 keywords and a brief). The FAQ says you need a valid credit card, and afterwards you are moved to the pay-as-you-go version without being charged.
Best for: startups that publish regularly and need to turn hundreds or thousands of keywords into a clear site structure, with briefs, without guessing which keywords belong on the same page.

Ahrefs vs Keyword Insights: Feature by Feature

Backlinks and competitor research

This is where the two differ most. Ahrefs shows who links to any site, which links are new or lost, a competitor's top pages, organic and paid keywords and traffic by country. Keyword Insights has no backlink data; its competitor view shows how rivals rank for your keyword clusters. If link building is part of your plan, only Ahrefs covers it. Our guide to checking competitor keywords explains the method with any tool.

Finding keywords

Ahrefs' database is much larger: 28.7 billion keywords with difficulty, volume, traffic potential and Parent Topic. Keyword Insights' Keyword Discovery is smaller but pulls live sources, including Reddit and Quora, which surface the questions people ask now. On Keyword Insights each discovery search costs 1,000 credits; on Ahrefs Starter you have 200 credits a month in total. For a deeper look at Ahrefs' research tool, read our guide to Ahrefs Keywords Explorer.

Grouping keywords into pages

Keyword Insights was built for this: upload thousands of keywords and get clusters by shared Google results, with intent, difficulty and the URL that already ranks. Ahrefs added keyword clusters and search intents to Keywords Explorer, but only from the Standard plan at €229 ($249) a month. If your problem is "we have 3,000 keywords and no idea how many pages to write", Keyword Insights answers it more directly and more cheaply.

Briefs and AI writing

Keyword Insights includes briefs, a writing assistant and an AI writing agent, paid from the same credits. Ahrefs sells writing help separately: the Content Kit add-on starts at €89 ($99) a month on top of a plan. If you want the keyword plan and the drafts in one place, Keyword Insights is the simpler setup.

Audits, rank tracking and AI visibility

Ahrefs includes Site Audit, Rank Tracker (750 keywords on Lite, updated weekly), Web Analytics and AI prompt checks (150 on Lite). Keyword Insights has none of these as standalone tools; it focuses on planning and writing. If you need daily rankings, see Ahrefs vs Wincher and Wincher vs Keyword Insights.

Cost: credits on both sides

Both tools now count usage in credits, but the credits mean different things. On Ahrefs Lite, 1,000 credits a month go on reports in Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer and the other tools; Standard removes the cap. On Keyword Insights, by our own calculation from its pricing page, Basic's 10,000 monthly credits cover for example clustering 5,000 keywords plus 20 briefs plus 15 Writing Assistant articles, or about 8 AI Writing Agent articles. Check the cost of each feature before a big project.

What Changed Since the Old Version of This Comparison

  • Ahrefs' price was wrong. The old article said Ahrefs starts at $99 a month. Today Lite is €119 ($129) a month, and a cheaper Starter plan costs €27 ($29). Ahrefs Webmaster Tools has been renamed Ahrefs Free.
  • Ahrefs' keyword database grew from the "over 25 billion keywords" quoted before to 28.7 billion, and Keywords Explorer now offers clusters and search intents from Standard.
  • Keyword Insights is a content tool, not a trend tracker. The old version described it as a real-time trends tool. Its core is SERP-based clustering, intent, briefs and AI writing, paid with credits; only Keyword Discovery pulls live sources.
  • Both tools now target AI search. Ahrefs counts AI prompt checks in its plans and sells Brand Radar; Keyword Insights points you to Reddit, Quora and YouTube threads AI tools draw on.
  • Removed: links to third-party review sites, a generic "common pitfalls" list and claims we could not check on the vendors' own pages.

Ahrefs or Keyword Insights: Which Should You Choose?

  • You need backlinks and competitor data: Ahrefs. Keyword Insights does not cover links at all.
  • You have a big keyword list and no content plan: Keyword Insights, to cluster the list into pages with intent and briefs.
  • You research only now and then: Ahrefs Starter at €27 ($29), paid month by month, plus Ahrefs Free for your own site.
  • You want briefs and AI drafts in the same tool as your keyword plan: Keyword Insights.
  • You want one tool for all of SEO: Ahrefs Lite or Standard; Standard adds clustering and intent inside Keywords Explorer.
  • No budget yet: Ahrefs Free for your site and our list of free Ahrefs alternatives; Keyword Insights' $1 trial lets you cluster up to 500 keywords once.

How Founders Use Ahrefs and Keyword Insights Together

  1. Research competitors. Pull the top pages and keywords of three or four competitors from Ahrefs, or start free with the tools in our guide to SEO keyword research tools for startups.
  2. Cluster the list. Upload the combined keyword list to Keyword Insights; each cluster with its intent becomes one page.
  3. Brief each cluster. Write from the brief yourself, with Keyword Insights' AI writer, or with the F/MS AI SEO Tool, which writes articles built to rank on Google and to be cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity.
  4. Publish and earn links. Use Ahrefs to find sites that link to competing pages and pitch them your better page.
  5. Audit and track. Run Site Audit in Ahrefs Free, track rankings and refresh pages that slip.
Keyword research is also a cheap demand test: if nobody searches for the problem you solve, validate your startup idea with real customers before you build.
