Ahrefs vs KWFinder (2027): Which Keyword Research Tool Should a Startup Pay For? Prices, Free Plans, Limits and Local SEO

Ahrefs vs KWFinder for Startups: Which Keyword Research Tool Should a Small Team Pay For?

Ahrefs and KWFinder both help you find the searches your future customers type into Google, but they are very different products. Ahrefs is a full SEO suite: keyword research is one tool next to backlinks, competitor research, rank tracking, site audits and AI search tracking. KWFinder, made by Mangools, is built for one job: finding long-tail keywords with low difficulty that a young website can rank for. We checked both tools' pricing pages, free options, limits and refund rules on the official websites in November 2026, in the default view each site showed us (euros, as we checked from Europe).
Quick answer: if keyword research is the main thing you need, start with KWFinder: its free plan gives 5 lookups a day, and Mangools Basic costs €37.70 a month on yearly billing for 100 lookups a day plus SERP analysis, rank tracking and backlink tools. Choose Ahrefs if you also need deep competitor and backlink research: Starter at €27 ($29) a month gives 200 credits for occasional research, Lite at €119 ($129) a month is the full working plan, and Ahrefs Free audits your own site at no cost. Ahrefs has no free trial and generally no refunds; Mangools refunds within 48 hours.

Ahrefs and KWFinder in 2027: What Each One Does

Ahrefs: keyword research inside a full SEO suite

Ahrefs runs its own web crawler and sells one platform: Site Explorer for competitors and backlinks, Keywords Explorer, Rank Tracker, Site Audit, Web Analytics and Brand Radar for AI visibility. Its Keywords Explorer shows 28.7 billion keywords filtered from 110 billion it has discovered (2.7 billion in the US alone) in 217 locations, with keyword difficulty (KD), search volume, traffic potential, Parent Topic and the current top results. Clusters, AI suggestions and search intents are listed as Standard-plan extras on the pricing page.

Ahrefs Keywords Explorer
  • Starter, €27 ($29) a month: 200 credits a month for Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker, the SEO Toolbar and Web Analytics. The Starter plan renews monthly only and cannot take extra users or add-ons. Good for a founder who researches a few evenings a month.
  • Lite, €119 ($129) a month: "for small businesses and personal projects": 1,000 credits per user, 750 tracked keywords, 6 months of history, 5 unverified and unlimited verified projects, 150 AI prompt checks, API and MCP access. Up to 2 more users at €37.40 ($40) a month each.
  • Standard, €229 ($249), and Advanced, €419 ($449) a month: unlimited credits, longer history, Content Explorer and the extra Keywords Explorer features (clusters, AI suggestions, search intents). Enterprise is €1,394 ($1,499) a month with an annual commitment.
  • Billing rules: paying annually saves up to 17%. Ahrefs says it never runs discounts, has no contracts or setup fees, and does not issue refunds in general (an unused monthly plan may be refunded).

Free ways in: what used to be Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is now Ahrefs Free. Verify your website and you get Site Audit (5,000 crawl credits per project a month), Site Explorer showing the top 1,000 backlinks and keywords of your own site, and Web Analytics, on an unlimited number of verified sites. It does not include Keywords Explorer or Rank Tracker. For quick ideas, Ahrefs' free Keyword Generator searches a database of over 8 billion queries for Google, Bing, YouTube and Amazon.

KWFinder: a dedicated finder for long-tail keywords

KWFinder promises to "find long tail keywords with low SEO difficulty", and that is still what it does best. You type a keyword, or a competitor's domain or URL, choose a location and language, and get related keywords with exact search volumes and their history and Mangools' own keyword difficulty score, next to the current Google results with SEO metrics for each ranking page. Mangools says KWFinder draws on 2.5 billion related keywords, checks about 100 million competitor keywords a month and supports about 65,000 locations, from countries down to cities and districts.

KWFinder: search by keyword or by domain
  • You cannot buy KWFinder alone. The Mangools FAQ says its tools are not sold separately, because the difficulty score is based on SERPChecker data. Every plan includes KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner, SiteProfiler and AI Search Watcher PRO.
  • Free plan: a free account with no credit card gives 5 lookups per 24 hours, with 15 related and 5 competitor keywords per lookup.
  • Basic, €37.70 a month billed yearly (€452.40 a year): 100 keyword lookups and 100 SERP lookups per 24 hours, 200 suggestions per lookup, 200 tracked keywords updated weekly, 100,000 backlink rows a month and no extra seats.
  • Premium (€52.70) and Agency (€97.70), billed yearly: 500 or 1,200 lookups a day, unlimited suggestions, 700 or 1,500 tracked keywords (weekly on Premium, daily on Agency) and 3 or 5 extra seats.
  • Billing and refunds: the Mangools pricing page shows Basic at €452.40 a year against a crossed-out €732.00 when paid monthly ("Save ~35%"). A full refund is available within 48 hours of payment, and the FAQ says Mangools may run discounts around Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Ahrefs vs KWFinder: Keyword Research Feature by Feature

Finding ideas

Both tools turn a seed keyword into hundreds of related ideas with volume and difficulty. Ahrefs' database is far larger by its own count (28.7 billion keywords against 2.5 billion related keywords at Mangools), which matters for big markets and very broad topics. For a startup looking for a few dozen winnable long-tail phrases, KWFinder's smaller, simpler list is usually enough, and its 100 lookups a day on Basic go further than 200 credits a month on Ahrefs Starter.

Judging difficulty

Ahrefs shows its own KD score, and Keywords Explorer lists the current top results with their metrics. KWFinder's difficulty score is based on SERPChecker data, and the right side of the screen shows each ranking page's metrics. Both answer the same question: can a small site get into the top 10? Neither score is comparable across tools, so stick to one.

Competitor keywords

KWFinder's search by domain shows the keywords a competitor ranks for, which is enough to find gaps. Ahrefs' Site Explorer goes much deeper: top pages, traffic estimates, backlinks and SERP history. If you plan to copy a competitor's link building as well as its keywords, Ahrefs is the stronger tool. Our guide to checking competitor keywords shows the method with any tool.

Local and long-tail keywords

KWFinder lets you pick from about 65,000 locations, including cities and districts, so a local business can see search volumes for its own town. Ahrefs covers 217 locations. For long-tail research in one country Ahrefs works fine; for city-level SEO, KWFinder is easier. See our guide to finding long-tail keywords.

What else you get

Both prices buy more than keyword research. Mangools adds a weekly rank tracker, SERP analysis, backlink lookups and AI Search Watcher PRO with 500 prompts. Ahrefs Lite adds a full backlink index, Site Audit, Rank Tracker for 750 keywords and 150 AI prompt checks a month. If you only want keywords, much of Ahrefs Lite goes unused; if you want one tool for all of SEO, Mangools will feel limited.

What Changed Since the Old Version of This Comparison

  • Prices were wrong. The old article said KWFinder costs $29 to $79 a month and Ahrefs Lite starts at $99. Today Mangools Basic, Premium and Agency cost €37.70, €52.70 and €97.70 a month on yearly billing, and Ahrefs Lite is €119 ($129) a month.
  • Ahrefs added a cheaper Starter plan at €27 ($29) a month, and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools has been renamed Ahrefs Free.
  • KWFinder is a bundle, not a single tool. Mangools sells only the full suite, which now also includes AI Search Watcher PRO and API and MCP access.
  • Both tools now track AI search. Ahrefs includes AI prompt checks and sells Brand Radar AI; Mangools includes AI Search Watcher PRO in every plan.
  • Removed: links to third-party review sites, a generic "common mistakes" list and claims we could not check on the vendors' own pages.

Ahrefs or KWFinder: Which Should You Choose?

  • No budget yet: KWFinder's free plan for keyword ideas plus Ahrefs Free for your own site's audit, keywords and backlinks. Our list of free Ahrefs alternatives has more options.
  • Keyword research is the main job: Mangools Basic. 100 lookups a day, city-level locations, a 48-hour refund and the rest of the Mangools tools for €37.70 a month on yearly billing.
  • You research only a few times a month: Ahrefs Starter at €27 ($29), paid month by month, or KWFinder's free plan if 5 lookups a day are enough.
  • Link building and competitor research drive your growth: Ahrefs Lite or Standard.
  • Local business: KWFinder, because you can pick your city.
  • Neither fits: see Ahrefs alternatives, open-source Ahrefs alternatives, KWFinder vs Keyword Planner (Google's free tool) and KWFinder vs SE Ranking.
Keyword research on a startup budget in 5 steps: start free, pick 20 to 50 keywords, check who ranks, pay for one tool, publish and review
Keyword research on a startup budget: a 5-step routine.
  1. Start free. Use KWFinder's free plan for ideas and verify your site in Ahrefs Free to see what you already rank for.
  2. Pick 20 to 50 keywords. Long-tail phrases with real volume and a low difficulty score, each matching a problem your product solves.
  3. Check who ranks. If small sites and forums sit in the top 10, you can win; if it is all big brands, pick a more specific phrase.
  4. Pay for one tool. Mangools Basic if you mostly need research, Ahrefs Starter or Lite if you also need competitor and backlink data.
  5. Publish and review. One useful page per keyword group, then check rankings monthly and update pages that slip.

How Founders Use Ahrefs and KWFinder to Get Customers

Keyword research is also a cheap demand test: if nobody searches for the problem you solve, validate your startup idea with real customers before you build. Once you know your keywords, track them: KWFinder vs Wincher and Ahrefs vs Wincher compare daily rank tracking with what these tools include.
Then turn the keywords into articles. The F/MS AI SEO Tool writes articles from your keywords that are built to rank on Google and to be cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity, and the AI SEO blog has more how-tos.
