HubSpot vs ActiveCampaign (2027): CRM-First Suite or Automation-First Email Tool, Prices, Free Plan, Startup Discounts and Which One Fits Your Startup

HubSpot vs ActiveCampaign: CRM-First Suite or Automation-First Email Tool for Your Startup?

HubSpot and ActiveCampaign both send newsletters, run automated email sequences and keep a contact database, but they start from opposite ends. HubSpot is a customer platform built around a free CRM: marketing, sales, service, content and data tools share one contact record, and you add paid hubs as you grow. ActiveCampaign is an email marketing and automation tool first, priced by the number of contacts, with a CRM and sales pipeline you can add later. We checked both pricing pages, in their default view, in October 2026.
Quick answer: start on HubSpot's free plan if you want one free CRM for sales and marketing and send fewer than 2,000 marketing emails a month (with HubSpot branding); its Starter plan costs $7 per seat a month on annual billing as a limited-time offer for new customers. Choose ActiveCampaign when email automation is your main growth channel: Starter costs $15 and Plus, with unlimited automation steps and landing pages, $49 a month billed yearly for 1,000 contacts, after a 14-day free trial. HubSpot's unlimited automation needs Marketing Hub Professional, from $800 a month plus a $3,000 onboarding fee.

What Each Tool Does in 2027

HubSpot: a free CRM with marketing, sales and service hubs on top

HubSpot calls itself an agentic customer platform: every hub works on the same CRM record, so a lead who opens your newsletter, books a demo and later opens a support ticket stays one contact. For email marketing the product is Marketing Hub, and the Starter Customer Platform bundles the Starter editions of the marketing, sales, service, content and data tools for the same $7 per seat a month offer. Its AI layer, Breeze, includes agents for customer questions, prospecting and CRM data, paid with HubSpot Credits.
  • Free, $0: up to 2 users, no credit card, 2,000 email sends a calendar month with HubSpot branding, and one automated action in email automation. You can store non-marketing contacts in the CRM for free, up to 15 million.
  • Starter, $7 per seat a month on annual billing: a limited-time offer for new customers (the page shows $20 per seat as the regular price, "save up to 65%"). It includes 1,000 marketing contacts, a send limit of 5 times your contact tier a month, removal of HubSpot branding, up to 10 automated actions, 500 HubSpot Credits and email support.
  • Professional, from $800 a month: 3 core seats (extra seats from $45 a month), 2,000 marketing contacts, 3,000 credits, unlimited and omni-channel automation, sends of 10 times the contact tier, phone support, and a required one-time onboarding fee of $3,000.
  • Enterprise, from $3,600 a month: 5 core seats, 10,000 marketing contacts, 5,000 credits and a $7,000 onboarding fee.
  • New: HubSpot AEO tracks how your brand shows up in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for $50 a month ($45 on annual billing), with a 28-day trial; it is also included in Professional and Enterprise.
The catch for startups: on HubSpot's marketing pricing page the jump from Starter to Professional is the big one. Branching workflows without the 10-action cap sit in Professional, which costs $800 a month plus $3,000 to start. Prices also depend on where you are: the page showed us USD in one browser and a different, per-seat layout in euros in another, so check the price for your own country before you plan a budget.
Startup discount: HubSpot for Startups gives 90% off year one, 50% in year two and 25% in year three to startups that raised pre-seed, seed or Series A money (not Series B or later) and work with an approved partner or have verified venture funding. A second tier gives 30% off year one through approved entrepreneurial organisations. Both apply only to new Professional or Enterprise products, not to Starter.
Best for: B2B startups where marketing and sales share the same leads, founders who want a free CRM from day one, and teams that expect to add sales pipelines, support tickets or a website on the same platform later.

ActiveCampaign: email marketing automation priced by contacts

ActiveCampaign builds everything around automated customer journeys: a visual automation builder with 950+ recipes, segments, A/B tests, site and link tracking and ecommerce triggers such as abandoned cart for Shopify, Square and WooCommerce. Its AI, Active Intelligence, is included in every plan with 500 AI credits a month and drafts campaigns, automations and reports. SMS, WhatsApp, transactional email and the Enhanced CRM (pipelines, deals, lead scoring) are add-ons.
  • Starter, $15 a month billed yearly for 1,000 contacts: 1 user, 10,000 email sends a month, multi-step automation with up to 5 actions per automation, 250+ email templates, up to 5 lists and standard and inline forms. No landing pages.
  • Plus, $49 a month: unlimited automation actions, cross-channel marketing, landing pages and site messages, generative AI for text and images, sales automation, custom user permissions and the option to add the Enhanced CRM. Still 1 user.
  • Pro, $79 a month: 3 users, 12,000 email sends, predictive sending at each contact's best time, conditional content, advanced segmentation and attribution and conversion tracking.
  • Enterprise, $145 a month: 5 users, 15,000 sends, single sign-on, HIPAA support, custom objects, Salesforce and Microsoft Dynamics integrations and a dedicated account team.
  • Trial and guarantee: 14 days free with no credit card, and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Prices rise with your contact count; the figures above are what ActiveCampaign's pricing page shows by default.
Startup discount: the ActiveCampaign Incubator offers 90% off any annual plan for the first year to new customers that are under 2 years old, in an incubator now or an alum from the past 12 months, and have raised no more than $1 million. Accounts pay full price after the first year.
Best for: ecommerce brands, course creators, SaaS products with trial onboarding and any startup whose growth depends on well-timed emails rather than a sales team.

HubSpot or ActiveCampaign: Which Should You Choose?

  • No budget yet, under 2,000 marketing emails a month: HubSpot Free. You get a free CRM and marketing email with HubSpot branding. For other free options, see our free Mailchimp alternatives.
  • Solo founder who needs real automations: ActiveCampaign Plus at $49 a month for 1,000 contacts gives unlimited automation steps and landing pages; HubSpot Starter caps automation at 10 actions.
  • Small team on a tight budget: HubSpot Starter at $7 per seat (while the new-customer offer runs) is cheap for 2 or 3 people; ActiveCampaign includes 3 users only from Pro ($79).
  • Sales team and marketing on the same leads: HubSpot. Its CRM, deals and Sales Hub are the core of the platform; ActiveCampaign's pipelines are an add-on from Plus.
  • Ecommerce flows (abandoned cart, product blocks, coupons): ActiveCampaign, with abandoned cart on every plan and product catalogs and coupons from Plus.
  • Funded startup with a partner VC or accelerator: compare the discounts. HubSpot's 90% applies to Professional and Enterprise; ActiveCampaign's 90% applies to any annual plan but needs an incubator link and under $1 million raised.
  • You want your own server: neither. See our open-source Mailchimp alternatives for self-hosted tools.
  1. Count your contacts. Both tools price by the contacts you email: HubSpot by marketing contact tiers (1,000 included in Starter), ActiveCampaign by contact bands starting at 1,000.
  2. Count the people. HubSpot Starter bills every seat; ActiveCampaign includes 1 user on Starter and Plus, 3 on Pro and 5 on Enterprise.
  3. Map one real automation. Write down your welcome or trial sequence. If it has more than 5 steps, you need ActiveCampaign Plus; more than 10 automated actions means HubSpot Professional.
  4. Decide on the CRM. If a salesperson works the same leads, HubSpot keeps everything in one record; ActiveCampaign can connect to Pipedrive, Zoho or Freshsales, or add its own pipelines.
  5. Test before you pay. Set up HubSpot Free, or start the 14-day ActiveCampaign trial, and send one real campaign before you commit to a yearly plan.

What Changed Since the Old Version of This Comparison

  • Prices are now on the page. The old post said HubSpot "can get steep" and ActiveCampaign is "more affordable" without numbers. Today HubSpot Starter is $7 per seat a month as a new-customer offer and ActiveCampaign Starter $15 a month for 1,000 contacts, both billed yearly.
  • Both added AI that runs on credits. HubSpot's Breeze agents use HubSpot Credits; ActiveCampaign's Active Intelligence comes with 500 AI credits on every plan.
  • ActiveCampaign renamed and reshaped its plans into Starter, Plus, Pro and Enterprise and now lists 1,000+ integrations, not the "850 apps" the old post quoted from a third-party site.
  • Removed: the "85% of small businesses" statistic, the deliverability scores (94.2% and 77.7%) from third-party tests, and the dental practice and consulting case studies, none of which we could verify on the vendors' own pages. We kept only what HubSpot's and ActiveCampaign's pages say.

How Founders Use HubSpot, ActiveCampaign and Other Marketing Tools

Most early-stage startups need three things from email: a welcome sequence for new sign-ups, a regular newsletter and a way to see which emails bring people back to the product. Either tool does that; the choice is about whether you also need a CRM for sales. Comparing more email tools?
