KWFinder vs Google Keyword Planner (2027): Paid SEO Keyword Finder or Free Google Ads Data for a Startup?

KWFinder vs Google Keyword Planner: Paid SEO Keyword Finder or Free Google Ads Data for a Startup?

KWFinder and Google Keyword Planner both tell you what people search for, but they answer different questions. Google Keyword Planner is Google's free tool for advertisers: it shows how often a keyword is searched, how many advertisers compete for it and what a click may cost. KWFinder, part of the Mangools bundle, is built for SEO: it adds a keyword difficulty score, the current top 10 results with SEO metrics and a search by competitor domain, so you can see which keywords a young website can actually rank for. We checked both on their official pages, Mangools' pricing page and Google Ads Help, in October 2026. If you also need to track your rankings once you have picked keywords, read our comparison of Wincher vs Google Keyword Planner.
Quick answer: start with Google Keyword Planner. It is free, and it gives Google's own numbers on demand and ad costs, but you need a Google Ads account with billing details, and it has no SEO difficulty score. Add KWFinder when you write content to win organic traffic and need to know which keywords are winnable: its free plan gives 5 lookups a day, and Mangools Basic costs €37.70 a month billed yearly (€452.40 a year).

KWFinder and Keyword Planner in 2027: What Each One Does

KWFinder: find keywords a new website can rank for

KWFinder promises to find long-tail keywords with low SEO difficulty. You type a keyword, or a competitor's domain, pick a location and a language, and get related keywords with search volumes and their history, CPC, a pay-per-click competition level and Mangools' keyword difficulty (KD) score. Next to the list, KWFinder loads the current top results with SEO metrics for every ranking page, so you can see at a glance whether small sites rank. Mangools says KWFinder draws on 2.5 billion related keywords and checks about 100 million competitor keywords each month, in about 65,000 locations.
  • Sold only as a bundle. The Mangools FAQ says its tools are not sold separately, because the KD score is based on data from SERPChecker. Every plan includes KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner, SiteProfiler and AI Search Watcher, plus API and MCP access.
  • Free plan: no credit card, 5 lookups per 24 hours, with 15 related and 5 competitor keywords per lookup. Enough to test it on your own niche.
  • Basic, €37.70 a month billed yearly (€452.40 a year): 100 keyword lookups and 100 SERP lookups per 24 hours, 200 suggestions per search, 200 tracked keywords updated weekly, 100,000 backlink rows a month and no extra seats.
  • Premium (€52.70) and Agency (€97.70) a month, billed yearly: 500 or 1,200 lookups per 24 hours, unlimited suggestions, 700 or 1,500 tracked keywords (weekly on Premium, daily on Agency) and 3 or 5 extra seats.
  • Monthly billing and refunds: the Mangools pricing page shows Basic at €452.40 a year against a crossed-out €732.00 and says yearly billing saves about 35%. A full refund is available within 48 hours of payment (not for two consecutive subscriptions).
  • The catch: Mangools says its search volume data usually arrives with a one-month lag, and keywords with very low volume show N/A instead of a number.
Best for: founders and content writers choosing what to write about, who want to see quickly whether a keyword is winnable before spending a day on an article.

Google Keyword Planner: free demand and cost data from Google

Google Keyword Planner is the keyword research tool inside Google Ads. Google's Keyword Planner page calls it a free resource to help advertisers build keyword lists for search campaigns. SEO teams use it too, because the numbers come from Google itself. The catch is access: Google Ads Help says you must finish your account setup by entering billing information before you can use "Get ideas for new keywords", and Google's own FAQ adds that you create a campaign first and switch a Smart Mode account to Expert Mode.
  • Discover new keywords from words or from any website. If you enter your own domain, Google tries to leave out keywords that do not match what you offer.
  • Get search volume and forecasts for a list you type, paste or upload as a CSV file. Forecasts estimate clicks, impressions, cost and conversions for your budget and are refreshed daily from the last 7 to 10 days.
  • Average monthly searches cover the keyword and its close variants, averaged over 12 months by default, for the locations and network you pick. Google says the numbers are rounded and shown for exact match only (Google's metric definitions).
  • Competition (low, medium, high) shows how many advertisers appeared for a keyword compared with all keywords on Google. It says nothing about how hard the keyword is to rank for in organic results.
  • Top-of-page bid ranges approximate the 20th and 80th percentile of what advertisers paid over the last 30 days. A high bid usually means buyers, not browsers.
  • Limits: keywords with very low volume, or that Google treats as sensitive (often health or finance), are not shown. Each keyword can have up to 80 characters and 10 words.
About ranges: Google's help pages describe search volumes as rounded averages and do not publish any rule on when you see exact numbers. If your account shows ranges rather than single numbers, use them to compare keywords against each other, and check the shortlist in an SEO tool such as KWFinder.
Best for: checking real demand on Google, estimating ad costs and planning a first Google Ads test. Our step-by-step guide shows how to use Google Keyword Planner.

What Changed Since the Old Version of This Comparison

  • KWFinder's price was wrong. The old article said it starts at $29.90 a month. Today the cheapest plan with KWFinder is Mangools Basic at €37.70 a month on yearly billing, and there is a free plan with 5 lookups a day.
  • KWFinder is a bundle. Mangools sells only the full suite, which now also includes AI Search Watcher and API and MCP access.
  • Keyword Planner's numbers are described as Google describes them: rounded 12-month averages with close variants, not "precise" search volumes.
  • Access to Keyword Planner is stricter than the old article suggested: Google asks for billing details and a campaign in Expert Mode before you get keyword ideas.
  • Removed: links to third-party review sites, a generic "common mistakes" list and claims we could not check on the vendors' own pages.

Which One Should a Startup Choose?

  • No budget at all: Keyword Planner for demand and costs, plus KWFinder's free plan for 5 difficulty checks a day.
  • You publish content to win organic traffic: KWFinder. Keyword Planner has no SEO difficulty, no view of who ranks and no rank tracking.
  • You plan to run Google Ads: Keyword Planner, for bid ranges, forecasts and adding keywords straight to ad groups.
  • You want to see what competitors rank for: KWFinder's search by domain. Keyword Planner only suggests ideas from a website's content.
  • Local business: both work. Keyword Planner uses the locations you target; KWFinder covers about 65,000 locations, down to cities.
  • You need long-tail ideas from YouTube, Amazon or TikTok: neither; see Keyword Tool vs Google Keyword Planner.

How Founders Use KWFinder and Keyword Planner Together

  1. Collect ideas for free. Enter your product words or your website in Keyword Planner, and add the words customers use for the problem. Our guide to finding long-tail keywords shows where to look.
  2. Check demand and bids. Keep keywords with real searches; note the bid ranges, because a high bid often signals buying intent.
  3. Score SEO difficulty. Run the shortlist through KWFinder and keep the terms with a low KD score that match what you sell.
  4. Look at who ranks. If the top 10 is full of big brands, pick a more specific phrase. Searching a competitor's domain shows which keywords competitors rank for.
  5. Publish and measure. One useful page per keyword group, then check Google Search Console for impressions, clicks and positions, and update pages that slip.

Once you rank, you need to see where: Wincher vs Keyword Surfer compares a daily rank tracker with a free in-search keyword extension, and SE Ranking vs Mangools and Wincher vs Mangools cover the rest of the Mangools bundle.
Keywords only pay off when you publish. The F/MS AI SEO Tool turns your keywords into articles written to rank on Google and to be cited by AI assistants, and the AI SEO blog has more how-tos. Search demand is also a cheap test of an idea: if nobody searches for the problem you solve, validate your startup idea with real customers before you build.
