Wincher vs Keyword Surfer (2027): Paid Daily Rank Tracking or Free Keyword Data in Google? Prices, Free Use and How Startups Use Both

Wincher vs Keyword Surfer: Paid Rank Tracking or Free Keyword Data in Google, Which Does Your Startup Need?

Wincher and Keyword Surfer often turn up in the same "best SEO tools" lists, but they are not rivals. Wincher is a paid rank tracker from Stockholm: it checks every day where your pages rank on Google and keeps the history. Keyword Surfer is a free Chrome extension from Surfer, the Polish content optimisation company: it adds search volumes and keyword ideas to Google's own results while you search. One tells you whether your pages are climbing; the other helps you decide what to write about. We checked both on their official websites in October 2026: plans and prices as each page shows them by default, free trials, data and limits.
Quick answer: install Keyword Surfer first, because it costs nothing and needs no account, and use it to pick keywords while you search Google. Add Wincher when you have pages to track: Basic costs €49 a month on monthly billing for 500 keywords updated daily, with a 7-day free trial without a credit card. Keyword Surfer cannot track rankings, and Wincher is not free, so most startups end up using both.

Wincher and Keyword Surfer in 2027: What Each One Does

Wincher: daily rank tracking with research tools built in

Wincher calls itself a platform for growing search visibility, and at its core is a Google rank tracker. You add your website and the keywords you care about, and Wincher checks their positions every day on every plan, on desktop and mobile, with competitors' positions, SERP features, keyword groups, annotations and notifications. Its rank tracker page says your data stays available for 24 months, and you can import ranking history from the tool you used before. Wincher also has a Keyword Explorer with 2.3 billion keywords in more than 150 countries, plus AI keyword suggestions, an On-Page SEO checker and SERP Benchmark. Wincher says more than 700,000 marketers and business owners use it; that is the company's own figure.

  • Local SEO: a Google Maps rank tracker with weekly updates and 25 credits on every plan; extra credits cost €10 per 500.
  • Trial and refunds: a 7-day free trial without a credit card, a 7-day refund on the first purchase, and no public free plan. Prices are the monthly billing shown by default on Wincher's pricing page; yearly billing is also offered.

Keyword Surfer: free keyword data right inside Google

Keyword Surfer is a Chrome extension from Surfer. Once it is installed, you search Google as usual and the extension shows the monthly search volume for your search term in a location you choose, a list of related keyword ideas with their volumes and an overlap score, the cost per click, estimated traffic, and how many words and keywords the ranking pages use. Surfer's help centre explains the overlap score as the share of the same pages that rank for both keywords, which helps you see whether one article can cover several searches. You can tick keywords to save them in Collections and export them as a CSV file. Data is available for 70 countries.

Keyword Surfer: Surfer's free Chrome extension for keyword research
  • Price: free. Surfer's page says "100% free. Forever." and claims 600,000+ users; that is Surfer's own figure.
  • No account needed: the help centre says the extension works without a Surfer account. Only one extra, the Humanizer that rewrites ChatGPT text inside the extension, needs a paid Surfer plan.
  • Browsers: built for Chrome. Surfer says other Chromium browsers such as Opera, Brave or Arc should work, but it cannot always guarantee compatibility.
  • What it does not do: no rank tracking, no ranking history, no site audit and no reports. It shows data for the search you are looking at, nothing more.
Who is behind it: Surfer is based in Wrocław, Poland. Its old surferseo.com address now redirects to surfer.ai, and in October 2025 Positive Group announced it had acquired Surfer. Best for: founders, writers and small teams who want quick search volumes and content ideas while they search, without paying for a keyword tool.

Keyword Surfer Is Free; Surfer Is Not

The 2026 version of this article mixed up the free extension with Surfer's paid app. The content editor, AI writing, SERP analysis and content audits belong to the Surfer platform, which now focuses on content optimisation and AI search visibility. On the Surfer pricing page, shown billed yearly in euros by default, plans start with Discovery at €49 a month, then Standard at €99, Pro at €182 and Peace of Mind at €299, plus AI Search Analytics at €82 a month for tracking your brand in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews. Surfer offers a 7-day trial of its Pro plan, but you enter billing details at checkout and the card is charged unless you cancel. If you need that paid content editor, compare our Surfer SEO vs MarketMuse review and the list of free Surfer SEO alternatives.

How to Use Them Together

Because one tool finds keywords and the other tracks them, the simplest setup for a startup is a loop. Search Google the way your customers do with Keyword Surfer switched on, save the terms with real volume and a clear buying intent, write or improve one page for each intent, add those keywords to Wincher, and check every week which pages slip. Wincher's own Keyword Explorer can replace Keyword Surfer once you pay for Wincher, but the extension is still handy for quick checks while you browse.
Five steps: search like a customer with Keyword Surfer, save the best ideas, write or update a page, track it daily in Wincher, fix what slips
Find keywords with Keyword Surfer, track them with Wincher.

What Changed Since the Old Version of This Comparison

  • Keyword Surfer is free. The old article said its scalable plans cost $49 a month. The extension costs nothing; €49 a month billed yearly is the price of Surfer's Discovery plan, a different product.
  • Wincher costs more than the old article said. It listed €29 a month. Wincher Basic now costs €49 a month on monthly billing for 500 keywords.
  • The AI features belonged to Surfer's app. AI writing, a SERP analyzer and the content editor are not part of the free extension.
  • Surfer has a new owner and address. Positive Group announced the acquisition in October 2025, and surferseo.com now redirects to surfer.ai.
  • Removed: a startup failure statistic with no source, links to third-party review sites, and a generic "mistakes to avoid" list.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • You have no budget and are still choosing topics: Keyword Surfer. It is free, needs no account and shows volumes as you search.
  • You have published pages and want to know how they rank: Wincher. Keyword Surfer cannot track positions over time.
  • You want to test rank tracking before paying: Wincher's 7-day free trial, which needs no credit card.
  • You need volumes for countries outside Keyword Surfer's 70: Wincher's Keyword Explorer covers more than 150 countries.
  • You want an AI writing and content editor: neither tool; look at the paid Surfer app or its alternatives.
  • You publish every week: both. Find topics with Keyword Surfer and track the results in Wincher.

How Founders Use Wincher, Keyword Surfer and Other SEO Tools

Free tools are enough for the first months. Keyword Surfer, Keyword Tool or Google Keyword Planner give you volumes; pick 20 to 50 keywords your customers type before they buy, write one strong page for each, and only then pay for tracking. If you prefer another extension, Ubersuggest vs Keywords Everywhere compares two more, and Rank Tracker vs Keywords Everywhere pairs a desktop tracker with an extension.
A tracker shows where you rank; it does not write the pages that rank. The F/MS AI SEO Tool turns your keywords into articles built to rank on Google and to be cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity, with human editors checking the result.
