Free Surfer SEO alternatives 2027: 10 free content optimization and on-page SEO tools compared

Free Surfer SEO Alternatives for Content Optimization, On-Page Checks and AI Writing

Surfer is a paid content optimisation platform: it scores your draft against the pages that already rank and tells you which terms, headings and length to aim for. In 2027 it has no free plan. What it does offer for free is a 7-day trial of its Pro plan (card required) and a few free tools, including the Keyword Surfer browser extension. If you are a founder writing your own blog posts, you can cover most of what Surfer does with free tools: a free SEO plugin that checks every draft, free data on how your pages already perform, a free on-page inspector and a free AI writer for first drafts. We checked every tool below on its official page, default view only, and moved paid-only tools to a separate list.
Quick answer: on WordPress, install Yoast SEO or Rank Math (both free) to check each draft as you write; add Ahrefs Free and Google Search Console to see which pages and queries need work; use Keyword Surfer, Surfer's own free extension, for search volumes on Google results; and use the free F/MS AI SEO Tool when you need a first draft with an SEO title, meta description and FAQ in under a minute.

What Surfer Costs in 2027, and What Is Free

Surfer moved from surferseo.com to surfer.ai, and its pages now carry the Positive brand: Positive Group announced the acquisition of Surfer on 28 October 2025. When we checked the pricing page in October 2026, it showed prices in euros from our location, billed yearly: Discovery €49 a month (120 documents to create or optimise, 10 tracked pages), Standard €99, Pro €182 and Peace of Mind €299 a month, plus AI Search Analytics at €82 a month for AI visibility tracking only. No free plan is listed. Surfer's help article on the trial says new accounts get 7 days of Pro for free, but you enter billing details at checkout and the card is charged when the trial ends unless you cancel. Its free tools are the Keyword Surfer extension, an AI Detector and an AI Humanizer.

The Best Free Surfer SEO Alternatives in 2027

1. Keyword Surfer: Surfer's own free extension

Keyword Surfer is the part of Surfer that stays free. It is a Chrome extension that Surfer describes as "100% free. Forever.", used by more than 600,000 people according to its page. On Google's results page it shows search volume, cost per click and estimated traffic, a list of keyword ideas with an overlap score, and the word count and keyword use of competing pages. Data covers 70 countries, and you can save keywords into Collections and export them as CSV. It does not score your draft, so pair it with one of the plugins below.

2. Yoast SEO: free real-time checks in WordPress

Yoast SEO is the closest free match to Surfer's editor if your site runs on WordPress. The free plugin (version 28.8, updated 27 October 2026, more than 10 million active installs on WordPress.org) gives you content and readability analysis as you write, with red, orange and green lights for one focus keyphrase, plus schema, llms.txt management and a free bulk editor for titles, meta descriptions and keyphrases. Its AI tools and checks for up to five keyphrases are in Yoast SEO Premium, which the Yoast site listed at €118.80 a year excluding VAT for one site when we checked.

3. Rank Math: more free on-page tests

Rank Math is the main free rival to Yoast. Its free plugin (version 1.0.280, more than 4 million active installs) lets you optimise a post for 5 focus keywords by default, runs 30+ SEO tests with recommendations, suggests related keywords as you type and connects to Google Search Console and Google Analytics inside WordPress. Its AI writer, Content AI, is not free: the Content AI FAQ says it works on the free plugin only with an active Rank Math AI subscription, and a 15-day Content AI trial comes with a new paid PRO, Business or Agency membership.

4. Ahrefs Free: audits, your own keywords and one AI document a month

Ahrefs Free is the new name of Ahrefs Webmaster Tools. For websites whose ownership you verify, it is free with no limit on the number of sites. Site Audit checks 170+ technical and on-page issues with 5,000 crawl credits a month per project, Site Explorer shows up to 1,000 of your keywords and backlinks at once, and Web Analytics counts up to 1 million events. It also includes one free document a month in AI Content Helper, Ahrefs' editor for writing for search and AI chatbots. That makes Ahrefs Free the nearest free stand-in for Surfer's Content Audit: it shows which of your pages already rank, so you know which ones to improve first. Paid Ahrefs starts with Starter at $29 a month.

5. F/MS AI SEO Tool: a free first draft in under a minute

Our own F/MS AI SEO Tool replaces the part of Surfer that writes drafts for you. Type a keyword or topic and, in about 20 to 40 seconds, you get a complete blog article on the page, with an SEO title, meta description, headings, takeaways and an FAQ. It works in 20+ languages, needs no sign-up, and you can copy the result as Markdown or HTML into any CMS. Then run the draft through Yoast or Rank Math and add your own examples before you publish.

6. Google Search Console: free data on your real queries

Google Search Console is free for sites you verify. Its Search Analytics report shows which queries bring people to each page, with impressions, clicks and average position, and the URL Inspection tool shows how Google crawls and indexes a page. You can submit sitemaps and single URLs and get email alerts about issues. For content optimisation, the queries report is the most useful free input: it shows the words people really search for that your page does not yet answer well.

7. SEOquake: a free on-page audit in your browser

SEOquake is a free browser plugin from Semrush for Firefox, Chrome and Opera. On any page you open, it can run an SEO audit, a keyword density report and an internal and external link analysis, and on search results it adds organic data next to each listing. The old seoquake.com domain now redirects to Backlinko's SEO Checker, so install the extension from your browser's store.

8. Semrush Free: 10 reports a day

A free Semrush account costs $0 a month with no credit card. It includes 1 demo project and 10 reports a day across its main tools. That is enough to check a competitor's top pages or a keyword's difficulty before you write, but not for daily work; paid plans and a 7-day trial sit above it.

9. Screaming Frog SEO Spider: free crawl of 500 URLs

The free version of the Screaming Frog SEO Spider crawls up to 500 URLs per crawl, with no sign-up. It finds broken links, errors and redirects, page titles and meta data, meta robots directives and exact duplicate pages, and it can generate an XML sitemap. A licence costs £199 a year and removes the limit. It is a technical audit tool rather than a writing tool, but it finds the missing titles and duplicate pages that Surfer's audit would flag.

10. Detailed SEO Extension: headings and schema at a glance

The Detailed SEO Extension for Chrome and Firefox is 100% free, with more than 450,000 weekly users according to its page. It shows a page's heading structure, meta data, schema markup and hreflang in one click and can export People Also Ask questions from Google. Use it to compare your heading outline with the pages that rank, which is much of what Surfer's outline suggestions do.

Other Free Options Worth Knowing

  • MarketMuse Free: its pricing page lists a Free plan for 1 user with 10 queries a month and no content briefs or tracked topics. We compare it with Surfer in Surfer SEO vs MarketMuse.
  • All in One SEO Lite: a third free WordPress SEO plugin (version 5.0.4, more than 2 million active installs); its AI content tools and advanced modules are in AIOSEO Pro.
  • Keyword research: AnswerThePublic has a free daily search limit (its pricing page does not state the number), and Google Keyword Planner is free inside Google Ads, but Google's help page says you must enter billing information first. More free options are in our free keyword research tools guide.

Paid Only or Trial Only: Tools Moved Out of This List

The 2025 version of this article called some paid tools free. These are trials or paid plans, not free alternatives:
  • Frase: a 7-day free trial with no card, then Starter at $39 a month billed yearly ($49 month to month). The old "$14.99 a month" price is gone. See Frase vs ContentKing.
  • Clearscope: a 14-day free trial, then Essentials at $129 a month.
  • NEURONwriter: a 7-day trial, then paid plans from Bronze at $23 a month.
  • Ahrefs and Semrush paid plans: the old list mixed their paid prices with their free tools; above we list only Ahrefs Free and Semrush Free. We compare the paid suites in Ahrefs vs Semrush.
  • Ubersuggest and KWFinder: keyword research tools with limited free accounts, not content optimisers. See Ubersuggest vs Keywords Everywhere and KWFinder vs Wincher.
  • Renamed: surferseo.com now redirects to surfer.ai, and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is now called Ahrefs Free.

Which Free Surfer Alternative Should You Choose?

  • You write in WordPress and want live checks: Yoast SEO for clear, simple guidance, or Rank Math for more free tests and 5 focus keywords.
  • You want to know which old posts to improve: Google Search Console plus Ahrefs Free.
  • You want keyword data while you plan: Keyword Surfer on Google results, plus Semrush Free for 10 reports a day.
  • You need a first draft fast: the F/MS AI SEO Tool, then edit and check it with a plugin.
  • You want to compare your page with the ones that rank: the Detailed SEO Extension and SEOquake.
  • Your site has technical problems: Screaming Frog for up to 500 URLs; read Screaming Frog vs Sitebulb before you pay.
  • You publish many articles a week: free tools will slow you down; compare paid suites in Semrush vs BrightEdge and Surfer SEO vs MarketMuse.

How Founders Use Free Content Optimization Tools

A simple free workflow covers most early-stage blogs. Pick one search phrase per article with Keyword Surfer or our Keyword Tool vs Keyword Planner comparison. Draft it with the F/MS AI SEO Tool, then rewrite the draft with your own numbers, customer stories and screenshots, which no tool can add for you. Check the headings, title and meta description with Yoast or Rank Math, and fix what our on-page SEO guide lists. After a few weeks, open Search Console: the queries that bring impressions but few clicks tell you which section to expand.
