Semrush vs BrightEdge (2027): Self-Serve SEO Suite or Enterprise AI Search Platform, and Which One a Startup or SME Actually Needs

Semrush vs BrightEdge: Which SEO Platform Does a Startup or SME Actually Need?

Semrush and BrightEdge both promise more visibility in Google and in AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews, but they are sold in completely different ways. Semrush is a self-serve SEO suite: you see the prices, sign up with any email and start a free trial in minutes. BrightEdge is an enterprise SEO and content platform: there are no prices on its website, and the only way in is a demo request with a work email. We checked both on their official pages in October 2026 so you can see what each costs, what you can try for free, and which one a small team can actually use.
Quick answer: for almost every startup and SME, Semrush is the right choice. It has a free plan (10 reports a day), a 7-day free trial and paid plans from €112.52 a month billed annually (€134 monthly), with AI search tracking from the Starter plan. BrightEdge makes sense only when you have a large website, an in-house SEO team and an enterprise budget: it publishes no prices, says it is trusted by 1,700+ enterprise brands, and sells through a sales call. If you are an SME that is outgrowing Semrush's self-serve plans, compare BrightEdge with Semrush's own Advanced plan and Semrush for Enterprise, which are also sold through a demo.

The Two Platforms Compared

Semrush: the Self-Serve SEO Suite With Public Prices

Semrush covers keyword research, competitor analysis, Position Tracking, Site Audit, backlinks and, on its newer plans, how your brand appears in AI answers. Adobe completed its acquisition of Semrush on 28 April 2026, and Semrush's customer FAQ says there are no immediate changes to existing services, contracts or billing. What matters for a startup is that everything is self-serve: the Semrush pricing page lists every plan, and you can start without talking to anyone.
  • Free plan: 1 demo project and 10 reports a day across the main tools, with AI Visibility features and no credit card.
  • SEO, €134 a month (€112.52 billed annually): 5 websites, 500 keywords tracked daily, basic keyword research and competitor analysis, Position Tracking, Site Audit and basic AI search monitoring.
  • Starter, €190 a month (€158.40 annually): the full keyword research and optimisation tools, competitor insights, MCP access, 50 AI prompts tracked daily across Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and 300 AI visibility reports a day.
  • Pro+, €286 a month (€238 annually): 15 websites, 1,500 tracked keywords, historical data, content optimisation, keyword cannibalisation analysis, multi-location tracking and 100 AI prompts.
  • Advanced: custom price through a demo, with 40+ websites, 5,000+ tracked keywords, share of voice, API data integration and team users. Extra users on other plans start at €43 a month.
  • Trial: 7 days free on the paid plans, and you can cancel any time.

For keyword research, the Keyword Magic Tool draws on more than 28 billion keywords in 142 regional databases, so it also works for small markets and non-English sites. Semrush for Enterprise: Where Semrush Meets BrightEdge

Semrush also sells an enterprise product that competes with BrightEdge head-on. Semrush for Enterprise bundles enterprise SEO, AI Optimization (brand visibility across AI models), Site Intelligence for crawling very large sites, Semrush Data for your own models, and Adobe Brand Visibility, a new product that combines Semrush's search data with Adobe's tools. Like BrightEdge, it has no public prices: the only way in is "Book a demo". If you are a fast-growing SME that has outgrown Starter or Pro+, this is the fairer comparison with BrightEdge.

BrightEdge: the Enterprise SEO and AI Search Platform Sold by Demo

BrightEdge calls itself an AI-powered AEO and SEO platform for Google, AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. It was founded in 2007 by Jim Yu and Lemuel Park, and its about page says it has 2,400 customers worldwide, including 57 of the Fortune 100 and brands such as IKEA, Microsoft and Visa. Its main parts:
  • Data Cube X: its keyword and competitor research dataset. BrightEdge says it holds over 4 billion data points with 10 years of history, and it shows its own BrightEdge Volume next to Google's search volume.
  • Instant: real-time keyword data and rankings on Google, Bing and Yahoo, plus checks in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Mode, down to city level.
  • AI Hyper Cube: launched in March 2026; shows which AI conversations mention your brand and your competitors, and which sources ChatGPT and AI Overviews cite.
  • Copilot and AI Catalyst: an AI assistant for SEO suggestions and AI-assisted content strategy and briefs.
  • Site Agents Suite: the new name for Autopilot. AI agents add internal links, generate JSON-LD schema and push title, meta title and H1 changes to WordPress, Drupal or another CMS, with a person confirming each change.
  • BrightEdge MCP: a read-only connection between your BrightEdge data and ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini Enterprise, Microsoft Copilot and other AI tools, open to customers with a BrightEdge login.

What BrightEdge Costs, and Why That Matters for an SME

BrightEdge does not publish prices. Its product pricing page only invites you to discuss pricing through a form or by phone, and brightedge.com/pricing redirects to the demo request form. That form asks for a work email (free email providers are not accepted), your company, job title and phone number, and promises a call, a live analysis of your brand in Google and AI search, and recommended actions. We found no free plan or self-serve trial. Any BrightEdge price you see quoted elsewhere is a third-party estimate, not an official number, so ask for a written quote and the contract length before you decide.

For a startup this has practical costs beyond the price: you need a company email and time for sales calls before you see the product, and an enterprise platform pays off only when someone on the team uses it every day. Semrush lets you test the same questions on your own site this afternoon.

What Changed Since the Old Version of This Guide

  • Semrush plans: the old "Pro from $139.95 a month" plan no longer appears on the pricing page. The plans are now SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced, with AI search tracking from Starter up.
  • Semrush ownership: Semrush is now an Adobe company; Adobe completed the acquisition in April 2026.
  • Semrush keyword database: the old figure of 25.3 billion keywords is out of date; Semrush now states more than 28 billion.
  • BrightEdge Autopilot: renamed Site Agents Suite. BrightEdge has also added AI Hyper Cube, Instant, Agent Edge and an MCP server for AI tools.
  • Removed: third-party "learn more" links and general claims that had no official source.

  • You run a large site with an in-house SEO and content team and an enterprise budget: ask for demos of both BrightEdge and Semrush for Enterprise, and compare written quotes, contract terms and onboarding.

How Founders Use an SEO Suite Without Wasting the Subscription

An SEO tool only pays off if it changes what you publish. Start with five to ten keywords that describe the problem your customers have, track them, and write one page per topic. For competitor research, compare SpyFu vs SE Ranking and SpyFu vs Keyword Insights; for traffic estimates, Similarweb vs Keyword Planner and Similarweb vs Keyword Insights; for rank tracking only, Ahrefs vs Wincher, SE Ranking vs AccuRanker and Wincher vs Keywords Everywhere.
Then turn the keywords into articles. The F/MS AI SEO Tool writes articles from your keywords that are built to rank on Google and to be cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity, with human editors checking them, and the AI SEO blog explains how AI search changes what you should publish.
