Surfer SEO vs MarketMuse (2027): Prices, Free Options, AI Search Tracking and Which Content Optimisation Tool a Startup Should Use

Surfer SEO vs MarketMuse: Which Content Optimisation Tool Should a Startup Use?

Surfer (still widely called Surfer SEO) and MarketMuse both help you write content that search engines and AI assistants see as complete and relevant. They approach the job from opposite ends. Surfer works page by page: you type a keyword, write in its Content Editor and watch a Content Score rise as you cover what the top results cover. MarketMuse works site-wide: it builds an inventory of your published pages, tells you which topics you already have authority on and plans what to write or update next. We checked both tools' official websites and pricing pages in October 2026, so every plan, limit and price below comes from Surfer or MarketMuse itself.
Both companies have changed hands since the old version of this guide. Surfer now lives at surfer.ai and belongs to the European software group Positive; MarketMuse now calls itself "MarketMuse by Siteimprove" and no longer shows prices on its pricing page.
Quick answer: choose Surfer if you write or brief articles yourself and want clear on-page guidance with a public price: plans start at 49 EUR a month billed yearly, and Standard (99 EUR) adds AI search tracking in ChatGPT. Choose MarketMuse if you already have dozens of articles and need a content plan based on your site's topic authority; start on its free plan (10 queries a month) and book a demo for paid prices. Many early-stage founders need neither at first: Surfer's free Keyword Surfer extension and a free SEO writer go a long way.

The Two Tools Compared

Surfer: Write and Optimise Each Page, Then Track AI Answers

Surfer started as an on-page SEO tool and now sells itself as an AI search visibility platform: its homepage promises visibility in Google AI Overviews, Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity. The core is still the Content Editor. You enter a keyword, Surfer analyses the pages that rank for it and gives live guidelines on topics, terms, headings and length, scored as a Content Score. Surfer says it uses NLP, machine learning and more than 500 web and AI signals, and that it works with all languages. Around the editor sit Surfy (an AI writing assistant), an AI Detector and Humanizer, a plagiarism checker, Topical Map for planning content clusters and Content Audit, which flags ranking drops and pages worth refreshing.

In October 2025 Surfer was bought by Positive, a European marketing and sales software group; Positive's announcement is dated 28 October 2025. The old surferseo.com addresses now redirect to surfer.ai, and the company behind the product is still Surfer Sp. z o.o. in Wrocław, Poland. According to Surfer, more than 150,000 customers in 159+ countries use it.

Surfer Pricing: Five Plans From 49 EUR a Month

The Surfer pricing page showed these prices per month, billed yearly, in euros in its default view when we checked. Yearly plans are paid upfront and, according to Surfer, cost up to 17% less than monthly billing.
  • Discovery, 49 EUR a month: 120 documents, 10 tracked pages, AI SEO optimisation guidelines, Surfy and the Humanizer. No AI prompt tracking. Surfer positions it as the plan to test Surfer.
  • Standard, 99 EUR a month: 360 documents, 25 AI prompts tracked in ChatGPT and refreshed weekly, 1-click content optimisation, plagiarism checker and rank drop detection.
  • Pro, 182 EUR a month: everything in Standard plus 50 AI prompts refreshed daily across all models, 5 brand spaces, 1-click internal linking, content ideas and coverage gaps, templates and custom voices, a cannibalisation report and MCP.
  • Peace of Mind, 299 EUR a month: 100 AI prompts refreshed daily, unlimited documents and brand spaces under a fair usage policy, advanced SERP analysis, API access and a dedicated success manager.
  • AI Search Analytics, 82 EUR a month: AI visibility tracking only: 50 prompts refreshed daily, mention gaps and brand sentiment, 5 brand spaces and MCP, without the writing documents.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing with SSO, white-label, custom limits and priority support.

Terms worth knowing: you can switch off auto-renewal at any time and keep access until the end of the paid period; Surfer takes cards for monthly and yearly plans and bank transfers for yearly plans only, and does not support PayPal. Every plan has a "Start for Free" button, but the pricing page does not say what the free start includes or how long it lasts, so check that in the sign-up flow before you enter card details.

Surfer's Free Tools: Keyword Surfer and More

Surfer has no free plan, but it does have genuinely free tools. The Keyword Surfer Chrome extension shows search volume, cost per click and keyword ideas right in Google's results, with data for 70 countries; Surfer calls it "100% free" and says more than 600,000 people use it. Surfer also offers a free AI Detector, AI Humanizer, a free AI visibility audit for your brand and Surfer Pulse, a free tracker of changes in AI models. For more no-cost options, see our list of free Surfer SEO alternatives.

If you work with AI assistants, the Surfer MCP brings live Surfer data into ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and similar tools. It is included in the AI Search Analytics, Pro, Peace of Mind and Enterprise plans, not in Discovery or Standard.

MarketMuse: Plan What to Write From Your Topic Authority

MarketMuse says its AI tells you what content to write, and how much, to build on your experience and rank where competitors are weak. It starts from an inventory of every page on your site and scores each topic with its own metrics: Topic Authority (how well your domain already covers a topic), Personalized Difficulty (1 to 100, how hard it is for your site to rank), Competitive Advantage (the gap between general and personal difficulty), Page Authority and a Content Score based on its patented topic model. From there it produces Content Briefs, Strategy Documents and content plans, and finds gaps in competitors' content.
MarketMuse is clear about what it is not: it does not replace a CMS, and while its Optimize application has a generative AI component, the company says it does not write content for its customers. It says it has used AI in its product for more than ten years.

MarketMuse, now "MarketMuse by Siteimprove"
Ownership changed in 2024: Siteimprove, a platform for website accessibility, SEO and analytics, announced a definitive agreement to acquire MarketMuse on 8 October 2024, and its owner Nordic Capital reports that the acquisition was completed in 2024. MarketMuse still runs its own website and plans, and its logo now reads "MarketMuse by Siteimprove".

MarketMuse Plans: Free, Optimize, Research, Strategy

The MarketMuse pricing page lists four plans but no prices; every paid plan has a "Book a demo" button, so you only learn the price in a sales call.
  • Free: 1 user and 10 queries a month with limited applications: Topic Navigator, Keywords, SERP X-Ray and SERP Heatmap, Site Heatmap and Connect. No site inventory, tracked topics or briefs, and you can only export saved writing.
  • Optimize: 1 user, 1 site inventory, 100 tracked topics, 100 queries a month, 5 Content Briefs (article briefs) and 1 Content Strategy Document a month.
  • Research: 3 users, 1,000 tracked topics, unlimited queries, 10 Content Briefs and 3 Strategy Documents a month.
  • Strategy: 5 users, 10,000 tracked topics, unlimited queries, 20 Content Briefs a month in all 9 brief types (such as comparison, how-to, listicle, local and product review) and 5 Strategy Documents.

The pricing page also has a "Start my free trial" button but gives no trial length or terms, so ask about them when you book the demo.

Surfer vs MarketMuse: Feature by Feature

Price and transparency

Surfer publishes its prices: from 49 EUR a month (Discovery) to 299 EUR a month (Peace of Mind), billed yearly. MarketMuse publishes plan limits but not prices, so budget a demo call before you can compare. For a founder who wants to pay by card today and cancel later, Surfer is the simpler purchase.
Bar chart of Surfer monthly prices billed yearly: Discovery 49 EUR, AI Search Analytics 82 EUR, Standard 99 EUR, Pro 182 EUR, Peace of Mind 299 EUR
What Surfer costs per month, billed yearly (EUR). MarketMuse publishes no prices.

Writing a single article

Surfer is built for this moment: the Content Editor gives live guidance while you write, and integrations with WordPress and Google Docs (plus Contentful and Zapier on higher plans) let you work where your text already is. MarketMuse's Optimize application also scores a draft against its topic model, but the free plan's 10 queries a month run out after a few articles.

Planning a content strategy

This is where MarketMuse leads. Its inventory and Personalized Difficulty show which topics your site can realistically win and which existing pages to update first, and Strategy Documents turn that into a plan. Surfer's Topical Map and Content Audit cover part of this job, and in our opinion they are enough for a startup with fewer than 50 articles.

AI search visibility

Surfer has moved hard into AI search: from Standard upwards it tracks prompts in ChatGPT, and Pro adds daily tracking across Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus MCP for AI assistants. MarketMuse's pricing page lists no AI answer tracking. If being cited by ChatGPT matters to you, read our GEO guide for startups and the explainer on generative engine optimisation.

Teams

Surfer’s plan cards do not list seat numbers, so ask Surfer before you buy for a team. MarketMuse includes 1 user on Free and Optimize, 3 on Research and 5 on Strategy.

What Changed Since the Old Version of This Guide

  • Surfer's price: the old "plans from $19 a month" is gone. The cheapest plan is now Discovery at 49 EUR a month billed yearly, and there is no free plan (the Keyword Surfer extension is free).
  • Surfer's name and owner: the product is now simply "Surfer" at surfer.ai, part of the Positive group since October 2025, and it now tracks AI search visibility as well as Google rankings.
  • MarketMuse's owner and prices: MarketMuse is now "MarketMuse by Siteimprove" and its pricing page shows plan limits without prices.
  • Removed: the unverified claim that Jasper includes Surfer insights, the "common mistakes" and "why marketing matters" filler, and third-party review links.

Surfer or MarketMuse: Which Should You Choose?

  • You publish 2 to 10 articles a month and write them yourself: Surfer Discovery or Standard.
  • You want to know whether ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews mention your startup: Surfer Standard (ChatGPT) or Pro (all tracked models); AI Search Analytics if you only need the tracking.
  • You have a large blog and need to decide what to update or write next: MarketMuse Research or Strategy, after a demo.
  • You have no budget: the MarketMuse free plan for occasional topic research, Surfer's free Keyword Surfer extension, and our free Surfer SEO alternatives.
  • You want a cheaper writing-and-brief tool: compare Frase vs ContentKing.
  • You need keyword, backlink and competitor data first: an all-in-one suite; see Ahrefs vs Semrush and Ahrefs vs Moz.

How Founders Use Content Optimisation Tools

Content tools only help when you already know which searches you want to win. A simple workflow that fits a small team:
  1. Pick keywords with free data first, for example Google Keyword Planner; see Keyword Tool vs Keyword Planner.
  2. Group them into topics and decide which pages to write or update: MarketMuse's inventory or Surfer's Topical Map and Content Audit.
  3. Write each page with an editor score as a guide, not a target: cover the subtopics your readers need, then stop.
  4. Add internal links between related articles, then publish and request indexing in Google Search Console.
  5. Measure rankings and AI mentions after a few weeks and refresh the pages that slip.
If you are choosing a bigger SEO platform for this work, our refreshed comparisons cover Semrush vs BrightEdge, SE Ranking vs Mangools and Semrush vs Similarweb, and our Ahrefs alternatives list. For writing tools beyond these two, see our roundup of AI content writing tools for entrepreneurs.
If you would rather not write every article yourself, the F/MS AI SEO Tool writes articles from your keywords that are built to rank on Google and to be cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity, with human editors checking them. For backlinks, F/MS Marketing Services can publish guest posts about your startup. And if you are still testing whether anyone needs your product, validate your startup idea before you invest in content.
