Open-Source Wireframe Tools (2027): Free Wireframe.cc Alternatives You Can Self-Host or Run Offline

Open-Source Wireframe Tools: Free Wireframe.cc Alternatives You Can Self-Host, Run Offline or Script

Wireframe.cc is a quick way to sketch a page layout in the browser, but its free version keeps every wireframe public and single-page, and private or clickable wireframes need a paid plan. It is also a hosted service with no published source code. If you want wireframes that stay private, run offline or on your own server, and cost nothing per seat, an open-source wireframe tool is the alternative. This guide compares the open-source wireframing and mockup tools that are still maintained: what each one is good at, what its licence allows and when it last shipped. We checked every tool on its official site and GitHub in October 2026, and at the end we list the old picks that are abandoned or not open source. If you need a full design tool rather than a wireframing tool, read our guide to open-source Figma alternatives.
Quick answer: for wireframes that grow into real UI designs and prototypes, use Penpot; for an offline desktop app with ready-made UI stencils, use Pencil Project; for free mockups next to your diagrams with no sign-up, use draw.io; for rough, hand-drawn sketches you share in seconds, use Excalidraw; to test a clickable prototype with users, use Quant-UX; and to keep wireframes as text next to your code, use PlantUML Salt.

What Wireframe.cc Offers in 2027 and What It Costs

To know what you are replacing: Wireframe.cc is a minimal online wireframing tool. You draw a rectangle and pick what it should be, a button, a hero section or a full layout block, from a deliberately limited palette that keeps you at wireframe fidelity. The free version needs no account: each saved wireframe gets a unique URL that anyone with the link can open, and it is limited to single-page wireframes. Premium adds a private account and private wireframes, multi-page and clickable wireframes, reusable master pages and export to PDF and PNG, with a 7-day free trial.
On the Wireframe.cc pricing page (default view, billed yearly, checked October 2026), Solo costs $12 a month for one user, Trio $33 a month for three users and Enterprise $83 a month for unlimited users. All the tools below are open source or free to use, and most of them can run on your own computer or server, so your wireframes stay private without a subscription.

The Best Open-Source Wireframe Tools in 2027

1. Penpot: from wireframe to UI design and prototype

Penpot is the open-source design platform for teams, and its code is under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. It covers the whole path that Wireframe.cc stops at: wireframes, then interactive prototypes, with CSS Grid and Flex layouts, components, native design tokens and shared libraries for a design system. Designs use open standards (SVG, CSS, HTML and JSON), so developers can inspect code that matches the design, and Penpot now offers an open MCP server so AI agents can work in your files. You can self-host it for free or use Penpot's cloud: on the Penpot pricing page (cloud, US dollars) the Professional plan costs $0, Unlimited costs $7 per editor per month and is capped at $175 a month, and Enterprise costs $25 per member per month. Version 2.18.5 came out in October 2026, with 2.19 in release candidates.

2. Pencil Project: an offline desktop mockup tool, active again

Pencil Project is a free and open-source GUI prototyping tool for Windows, macOS and Linux, licensed under the GPL-2.0. It ships with built-in shape collections for desktop and web UI, Android and iOS screens and flowcharts; you link elements to other pages to show the user flow, and an export to a web page turns those links into a clickable mockup. It also exports to PNG, PDF and SVG, all without an internet connection or an account. For a while Pencil looked abandoned: version 3.1.1 came out on 1 January 2023 and nothing followed for almost four years. That changed on 23 October 2026 with version 4.0.0, which adds built-in AI support: through the Model Context Protocol you can connect assistants such as Claude Desktop, Cursor or VS Code to create, edit and arrange mockups on your canvas, and you can search icon libraries such as Tabler, Lucide and Font Awesome. It suits founders who want a private, offline tool for low-fidelity mockups.

3. draw.io: free mockups next to your diagrams, no sign-up

draw.io (also known as diagrams.net) is a diagramming tool with Apache 2.0 licensed source code, free forever and usable without signing up. Its mockups shape library turns it into a solid wireframing tool: buttons, forms, menus and mobile screens sit next to the flowcharts, user flows and sitemaps you probably already draw. draw.io's own guide shows how to draw interface mockups and store them in Jira issues. You can save files to your own computer or to Google Drive, OneDrive, GitHub and other storage, and it works inside Confluence, Jira, VS Code and Notion. The desktop app runs fully offline; version 32.6.1 came out in October 2026. Clickable prototypes are basic, so use it for structure, not for user tests.

4. Excalidraw: hand-drawn wireframes in seconds

Excalidraw is an open-source virtual whiteboard under the MIT License that makes everything look hand-drawn, which is exactly right for early wireframes: nobody argues about colours when the sketch looks like a sketch. It has an infinite canvas, shape libraries (including public libraries you can import), export to PNG and SVG and an open .excalidraw file format. The free app at excalidraw.com works offline, saves to your browser and offers real-time collaboration with end-to-end encryption and shareable read-only links. On the Excalidraw+ pricing page the free plan includes the full editor, one infinite scene, unlimited collaborators and 10 AI requests a day, and the AI features include wireframe to code; the paid Plus plan adds unlimited scenes, cloud storage and comments, with a 14-day free trial. There are no clickable prototypes.

5. Quant-UX: prototype and test with real users

Quant-UX is an open-source research, usability and prototyping tool under the GPL-3.0. You draw app screens with ready-to-use UI widgets, connect them and add animations, logic flows and form validation, then share a link or QR code with testers. Quant-UX records every test and shows heatmaps, drop-offs, task success rates, A/B test results and survey answers. Its pricing page says the hosted version is free, with unlimited prototypes and unlimited user tests. To self-host, the project provides Docker images; the backend needs MongoDB, a mail server and Java, so it is heavier to run than the other tools here. The code was updated in October 2026.

6. PlantUML Salt: wireframes written as text

Salt is a subproject of PlantUML for drawing GUI and website wireframes from a few lines of text: you write @startsalt, then buttons in square brackets, radio buttons in round brackets, text fields in quotes and drop-down lists between carets, and PlantUML renders the screen. Because the wireframe is plain text, it lives in your Git repository, Markdown docs or wiki and changes are easy to review. PlantUML's main repository is GPL-3.0 and runs locally with Java or on an online server; version 1.2026.9 came out in October 2026. It is for technical founders and product specs, not for visual exploration.

7. mydraft.cc: a simple open-source wireframer for the browser

mydraft.cc is the tool closest to Wireframe.cc in spirit: a plain browser editor for wireframes with UI shapes, several pages per project, links between pages and a presentation mode. Its source code is MIT-licensed, and its author started it because most commercial wireframing tools cost more per month than a full office suite. You can use the hosted version or build it and serve it from your own web server. Its last tagged release is from October 2024, but the code was still being updated in October 2026.

8. tldraw: a free whiteboard, but not open source

tldraw appears on many open-source lists, so a clear note: the tldraw.com whiteboard is free to use, but the tldraw SDK is published under its own tldraw licence, not an OSI open-source licence. You may use and modify it in development, but production use needs a licence key; the tldraw pricing page offers a 100-day free trial, a free hobby licence and startup pricing. For founders who only want to sketch a screen, tldraw.com is fine; if you want to build a product on it, read the licence first. Version 5.6.0 came out in October 2026.

Wireframe Tools That Are Abandoned, Changed or Not Open Source

The 2025 version of this article listed several tools that no longer belong on an open-source wireframing shortlist:
  • Akira: the Linux UI design app's README still says it is in early development and not ready for production use, and its last release dates from August 2021. Use Penpot instead.
  • Wirefy: the old article linked to an unrelated GitHub project. The real Wirefy is an HTML and CSS framework for responsive wireframes (MIT) whose code has not changed since July 2019, so we removed it.
  • Figma, Miro, MockFlow and Whimsical: useful wireframing tools with free plans, but closed source, so you cannot self-host them or read the code. See our free Miro alternatives and free Adobe XD alternatives for free hosted tools.
  • Vectr: closed source, and it now presents itself as an AI vector graphics editor and logo maker rather than a wireframing tool.

Which Open-Source Wireframe Tool Should You Choose?

  • Your wireframes will become real UI designs and prototypes: Penpot.
  • You want a private desktop app that works offline: Pencil Project.
  • You already draw flowcharts and want mockups in the same file, free, no account: draw.io.
  • You want rough sketches to discuss ideas with a co-founder or client: Excalidraw.
  • You need to test a clickable prototype with real users: Quant-UX.
  • Your specs live in Git or Markdown: PlantUML Salt.
  • You want the simplest Wireframe.cc-like editor you can host: mydraft.cc.

How Founders Use Open-Source Wireframe Tools

A wireframe is the cheapest version of your product. Before you pay a developer or spend a weekend building, sketch the three or four screens that matter: the landing page, sign-up, the one action your product exists for and the result the user sees. Show those sketches to five potential customers and ask them what they would click and what they expect to happen. Keep the first version low-fidelity in Excalidraw, Pencil or mydraft.cc, move to Penpot when the layout is settled and you need real UI, and use Quant-UX when you want numbers, such as how many testers finish the task. Keep each wireframe private if it shows an idea you have not launched yet; that is the main reason to self-host or work offline.
Once the wireframes hold up, validate your startup idea with real customers and build your MVP in a weekend with AI. Check your finished landing page with our free landing page analyzer guide, and turn what you learn into articles with the F/MS AI SEO Tool so people find you in Google and AI assistants.
